Our part-time blended learning MSc Occupational Medicine course provides an overview of the whole spectrum of medicine and hygiene within the workplace.

The course is aimed at GPs who want to gain an academic qualification in occupational medicine and doctors already working in the field - especially in specialist training posts - who want to prepare for professional exams with the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM).

This MSc is also suitable for doctors in other disciplines who have an interest in occupational medicine.

You will benefit from access to a range of specialist knowledge and resources within occupational health and examine the evidence on which occupational health practice is based.

The course takes place in a research-enriched environment and, for those progressing to the third year of the MSc, you will have the opportunity to undertake research-based activities relevant to occupational health, including formulating a research question, designing and executing an appropriate study and drawing valid conclusions through writing a dissertation. 

Our course follows the syllabus requirements of the FOM (London and Ireland).

Aims

This course aims to provide you with the information required by medical practitioners working in the field of occupational medicine, and to allow you to pursue an academic qualification in this subject.

We also aim to provide you with the benefit of blended learning methodology, which allows you to apply the knowledge gained during your day-to-day work.

This course adheres to the syllabus requirements of the FOM, RCP (London) and RCP (Ireland).

Teaching and learning

The course comprises a blend of specially commissioned written materials in electronic format (PDF), together with interactive teaching material, all delivered via the University's virtual learning environment, Blackboard.

In Year 1, you are required to attend in Manchester for a one-day seminar associated with Module 1 in Month 3, and the same for Module 2 in month 5 for September starters, in Month 6 for April starters and for one exam day in Month 10.

You are allocated to tutorial groups for Modules 4 to 8, each supported by a specialist in occupational medicine. Tutorials are delivered via telephone or web conference.

In Year 2, you are required to attend in Manchester for a four-day practical course in Month 5 and for one exam day in Month 10.

In Year 3, you are required to attend a three-day MSc dissertation course held at the University in Month 1.

Some components of the course are held jointly with students on the MSc Occupational Hygiene course.

Coursework and assessment

All taught course units will be assessed via examinations held at the University at intervals throughout the course, and the third year will be assessed via submission of a dissertation.

Assessment is by eight examination papers, one per course module. The first will be sat at Seminar 1 (Year 1, Month 3) and the second at Seminar 2 (Year 1, Month 5 for September starters and Month 6 for April starters). The remaining Year 1 assessments will be sat in Month 10. For Year 2, assessments will be held in Month 5 and 10.

If you wish to proceed to the MSc, you are also required to complete a third year, during which you will attend a mandatory three-day residential course (in Month 1) and prepare a dissertation. For doctors in approved training posts, the dissertation may also be eligible for submission for the MFOM.

The MSc in Occupational Health is a part-time distance e-learning programme that offers knowledge and expertise in the science underpinning occupational health and safety.

It offers a convenient means for nurses, doctors, health and safety advisors or managers with busy work schedules and other responsibilities, to gain a postgraduate degree in Occupational Health.

The emphasis is on common occupational health and safety issues encountered in the workplace.

The course encourages self-directed learning, critical thinking and comparative analysis of occupational health systems and practice. This is done within a structured and dynamic on-line learning environment that provides interactive multidisciplinary learning and the opportunity for mutual support and collaboration. 

Structure

All students register initially for the MSc.

The MSc consists of three stages:

• Stage T1 (first taught stage)
This stage lasts for one academic year, and consists of three 20-credit modules, totalling 60 credits, at Level 7.

• Stage T2 (second taught stage)
This stage lasts for one further academic year, to a total of 2 academic years for stages T1 and T2, and consists of a further three 20-credit modules at least to the value of 60 credits at Level 7, to achieve a total of at least 120 credits at Level 7.

• Stage R: MSc research dissertation stage
This stage lasts for one further academic year, to a total of three academic years for the full MSc programme (stages T1, T2 and R), and includes a dissertation of 60 credits at Level 7, to achieve a total of at least 180 credits at Level 7 to complete the MSc programme.

The total normal duration to complete the full MSc programme (stages T1, T2 and R) is three academic years on a part-time basis, from the date of initial registration on the MSc programme.

You may exit after stage T1 with a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert), if you have gained at least 60 credits, only where this includes the award of credit for three particular modules.

You may exit after stage T2 with a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip), or progress to the MSc dissertation, if you have gained at least 120 credits, only where this includes the award of credit for four particular modules.

Your dissertation, which will normally be no longer than 20,000 words and supported by such other material as may be considered appropriate to the subject, will embody the results of your period of project work. The subject of each student’s dissertation will be approved by the Chair of the Board of Studies concerned or his/her nominee.

Assessment

During the taught stages, formative assessment will include online discussions examining specific occupational health issues. Summative assessment will consist of written assignments examining aspects of occupational health theory and practice, enabling the student to critically appraise the context and scientific literature, demonstrate a detailed understanding of the topic and reflect on how their new knowledge will affect their practice.

The MSc dissertation stage will be wholly assessed based on the final dissertation. Expectations for the format, submission and marking of the dissertation will follow the current Senate Assessment Regulations, supplemented where appropriate with additional requirements of the Programme/School/College and any specific requirements arising from the nature of the project undertaken.

During the Master’s stage you will be expected to keep in regular contact with your supervisor. You will also complete a progress report every two months in conjunction with your supervisor.

Career Prospects

At present there is a shortage of occupational health clinicians/practitioners of all levels in the UK. Although this course will not give you formal professional accreditation, it provides the opportunity to gain a sound basis of knowledge for practice, and demonstrates a commitment to your own further professional development in occupational health.

For qualified doctors wanting to enter specialist training in occupational medicine, the Postgraduate Diploma stage of the course will provide knowledge of the bulk of the topics needed for part 1 of the Membership Exam of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (MFOM). Description

The Aerospace Medicine course is a unique study pathway that provides physicians with comprehensive theoretical and practical instruction in advanced aviation physiology, psychology, pathology, clinical and operational aviation medicine.

This course includes time based at the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine (CAM), as the Centre provides an appropriate location for valuable elements of the teaching and visits to some of the service and civilian establishments used. The Centre also offers unique practical facilities which are available to students on the course.

You will complete the MSc course in one year, studying September to September. If you are following the MSc pathway, you must take modules totalling 180 credits to meet the requirements of the qualification, of which 60 will come from a research project and written dissertation.

The Postgraduate Diploma pathway requires modules with a total of 120 credits to complete the programme and can be conducted in just over six months.

Teaching

If carrying out the MSc you will receive approximately 510 contact hours at King’s and various external study locations, primarily the RAF Centre for Aviation Medicine at Henlow – this includes lectures, seminars, practical sessions.

If you are studying for the full MSc qualification, you will be expected to spend approximately 600 hours on the research project module and thesis.

This course is primarily taught at the King’s College London Guy’s campus, with some teaching at the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine at Henlow as well as other locations, mainly in the UK but commonly with one overseas visit. Please note that locations are determined by where each module is taught and may vary.

Career prospects

Career opportunities in aerospace medicine are varied. Many undertaking specialist training have already been employed specifically for the role and are sponsored to undertake these courses. However others use such training so as to better equip themselves for potential employment.

Areas of possible careers include with airlines, aviation regulators, air traffic services, military aviation and space agencies as well as in academic or commercial research organisations. Some aviation medical examiners (AMEs) undertake the DAvMed. Appointment as an AME in the UK is now restricted to doctors on the GMC specialist register. 

Previous graduates of the M.Sc programme and DAvMed courses have been employed in all these areas and enjoyed a varied and challenging career.

This flexible part-time eLearning programme is aimed at health professionals working internationally in remote and offshore locations. All teaching is online, with students and faculty internationally based, and students can choose to study individual modules as CPD or towards a Certificate or Diploma award. The Diploma programme includes a residential component towards the end of the students studies.

Programme aims

The main aim of the programme is to provide health professionals working in remote, and in some instances potentially hazardous locations, the knowledge and skills to operate effectively in this environment using an evidence based approach. Normally: an undergraduate health related degree or relevant health related professional qualification and current work experience in the Remote Medical Care area. Swansea University Medical School's Graduate Entry Medicine Programme (MBBCh) is unique in Wales, and one of a small group of similar programmes of medical study in the UK. Our MBBCh degree is an innovative, 4-year accelerated medical degree open to graduates of any discipline.

Key Features of Graduate Entry Medicine Programme

The Graduate Entry Medicine Programme is a fully independent four-year programme based primarily in Swansea and west Wales, although students may undergo placements in other parts of Wales if they wish. We have designed an integrated medical curriculum, where the basic biomedical sciences are learnt in the context of clinical medicine, public health, pathology, therapeutics, ethics and psycho-social issues in patient management. This, together with a high emphasis on clinical and communication skills, will provide you with everything you'll need to practise medicine competently and confidently.

The curriculum of the Graduate Entry Medicine programme, with its learning weeks and clinical placements, is intentionally not structured in a conventional ‘body systems’ approach but is designed to reflect the way in which clinicians approach patients and how patients present to doctors.

This innovative approach will help you to develop a way of thinking and of engaging with information that mimics that used in clinical practice. As you work your way through learning weeks, clinical placements and practical sessions, you will acquire knowledge and build up your repertoire of clinical understanding and skills. Themes and strands, which run longitudinally throughout the Graduate Entry Medicine Programme, will help you make links with other aspects you are learning, and with things you have previously considered as well as how all this relates to clinical practice.

Course Structure

The Graduate Entry Medicine Programme consists of Phase I (Years 1 + 2) and Phase II (Years 3 + 4). Each year is mapped onto GMC Tomorrow’s Doctors 2009 (TD09), where 3 Modules – Scholar and Scientist, Practitioner and Professional, reflect the TD09 outcome areas.

The Graduate Entry Medicine programme involves a spiral, integrated curriculum structured around 6 body system ‘Themes’ - Behaviour, Defence, Development, Movement, Nutrition and Transport - with 96 clinical cases presented in 70 ‘learning weeks’ (65 in Phase I and 5 in Phase II).

GAMSAT

GAMSAT is a professionally designed and marked selection test for medical schools offering graduate-entry programmes open to graduates of any discipline. You will need to sit GAMSAT if you intend to apply for entry to the GEM Programme here in Swansea. There are no exemptions from the GAMSAT test.

GAMSAT evaluates the nature and extent of abilities and skills gained through prior experience and learning, including the mastery and use of concepts in basic science, as well as the acquisition of more general skills in problem solving, critical thinking and writing.

How we decide

Applicants, who meet the minimum entry requirements are ranked based upon their GAMSAT scores. The applicants who have scored most highly are then invited to attend the Selection Centre at the Medical School in the Spring. Please note that all candidates must attend in person and that we do not have the capacity to offer remote interviews, for example via Skype.

We will attempt to inform all applicants whether they have been successful. All candidates who are successful in gaining an interview will also be invited to attend a Visit Day at the University's Singleton Campus.

Format of the Selection Centre

After an introduction and a “setting the scene” session, you will be asked to sit a written assessment of 30 minutes duration. This situational judgement test is not designed to assess your academic ability, but to try and identify those applicants whose personal and academic qualities are suitable to a career in medicine.

Following the written assessment, you will have a tour of the university. You will learn more about the course and see life here at Swansea through the eyes of a medical student. It is not just about Swansea deciding if you are right for our course, but also the opportunity for you to see if Swansea is right for YOU.

After lunch, you will then be invited to attend two separate interviews, each of 20 minutes duration. They are conducted by pairs of trained interviewers taken from our highly trained panel of clinicians, academics, medical students and members of the public (lay) interviewers. Your personal statement will be considered and discussed during your interview.

The interview process is designed to take account of the personal and academic qualities needed as a doctor, as set out in ‘Good Medical Practice’, and the capacity to meet the outcomes of ‘Tomorrows Doctors’. In summary these are:

The Genomics Diploma course is worth 120 credits and comprises 6 modules of 20 credits each.

The Diploma course aims to equip graduates with critical knowledge and understanding of genomics medicine. Graduates will be able to apply knowledge for direct clinical benefit and future study. Our Genomics Medicine Diploma course caters to the educational needs of a primary and secondary care audience and is the only one of its kind that is completely accessible online.

Our Genomic Medicine Diploma has been designed for General Medical Practitioners, Specialist Medical Practitioners (for example Paediatrics, General Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Medical Oncology), Allied Health Professionals (Clinical Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists), Nurses (Cancer, Cardiac, Paediatric, Neurology etc.) and Midwives. In addition, the course would be of interest to those with related undergraduate degrees (e.g. Dietetics, Biomedical Science, Pharmacy) or equivalent professional qualifications and background experience

On completion you will demonstrate:

- a systematic understanding of genetics and genomic factors in human diseases

- an ability to critically evaluate current research in applied and translational genetics and genomics
- an ability to deliver management strategies for the investigation and treatment of patients with inherited human diseases

The online course lasts one calendar year and is a part time distance learning course. It consists of 6 modules per year, each of 6 weeks duration.

Assessment

Online Diploma in Genomic Medicine and Healthcare

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the 6 modules have the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students are split into groups of 10-15 students and are assigned a dedicated expert tutor who:

Facilitates clinical case discussions with the group.
Monitors, assesses and marks each student throughout the module.
Students use the skills gained during the lectures to engage with the different activities (see below).

The Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy, Trinity College, is aimed at developing occupational therapists' research knowledge and skills in order to integrate research as an integral and explicit element of professional practice. It specifically aims to develop therapist's academic knowledge and critical thinking skills in the area of occupational therapy theory, evidence-based practice and current approaches to research in occupational therapy practice.

The course is designed to suit therapists who wish to study part-time while continuing to work in professional practice. It is offered on a two year part-time basis, where students attend on pre-allocated times for a combination of tutorials, seminars, lectures and self-directed learning activities. The first year of the course includes five modules:

Advancing Occupational Therapy Theory;
Evidence based practice;
Qualitative Research Methods in Occupational Therapy;
Quantiative Research Methods in Occupational Therapy; and

The programme is based on a multidisciplinary approach to tackling a wide range of occupational health issues and is accredited by both the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) for graduate membership.

Course details

Organised by the Institute of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (IOEM) at the University of Birmingham this programme is designed to meet the needs of postgraduate training in the prevention and control of work-related ill health and to understand the issues of ill health and its effect on work in the 21st century.

Open to graduates with relevant first degrees and those with appropriate work experience including doctors, nurses, hygienists, and health and safety personnel. 

Learning and teaching

  • Teaching methods include formal lectures, tutorials, group work, case studies and workplace visits; the majority of lectures and practicals take place within the IOEM, which allows high-quality interaction between the academic staff and students
  • The programme of teaching is supported by a variety of workplace visits that enable students to see at first hand the extent of occupational health in practice
  • Each module includes tutorial time, providing an opportunity to re-address concepts and approaches to problem solving
  • Learning is supported by the use of the electronic curriculum (Canvas), allowing students to access learning materials when away from the campus
  • Every student on the programme has a personal tutor who can be contacted to discuss course material and understanding of specific topics as well as matters which may affect academic progress
