The MSc in Occupational Health is a part-time distance e-learning programme that offers knowledge and expertise in the science underpinning occupational health and safety.

It offers a convenient means for nurses, doctors, health and safety advisors or managers with busy work schedules and other responsibilities, to gain a postgraduate degree in Occupational Health.

The emphasis is on common occupational health and safety issues encountered in the workplace.

The course encourages self-directed learning, critical thinking and comparative analysis of occupational health systems and practice. This is done within a structured and dynamic on-line learning environment that provides interactive multidisciplinary learning and the opportunity for mutual support and collaboration. 

Structure

All students register initially for the MSc.

The MSc consists of three stages:

• Stage T1 (first taught stage)
This stage lasts for one academic year, and consists of three 20-credit modules, totalling 60 credits, at Level 7.

• Stage T2 (second taught stage)
This stage lasts for one further academic year, to a total of 2 academic years for stages T1 and T2, and consists of a further three 20-credit modules at least to the value of 60 credits at Level 7, to achieve a total of at least 120 credits at Level 7.

• Stage R: MSc research dissertation stage
This stage lasts for one further academic year, to a total of three academic years for the full MSc programme (stages T1, T2 and R), and includes a dissertation of 60 credits at Level 7, to achieve a total of at least 180 credits at Level 7 to complete the MSc programme.

The total normal duration to complete the full MSc programme (stages T1, T2 and R) is three academic years on a part-time basis, from the date of initial registration on the MSc programme.

You may exit after stage T1 with a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert), if you have gained at least 60 credits, only where this includes the award of credit for three particular modules.

You may exit after stage T2 with a Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip), or progress to the MSc dissertation, if you have gained at least 120 credits, only where this includes the award of credit for four particular modules.

Your dissertation, which will normally be no longer than 20,000 words and supported by such other material as may be considered appropriate to the subject, will embody the results of your period of project work. The subject of each student’s dissertation will be approved by the Chair of the Board of Studies concerned or his/her nominee.

Assessment

During the taught stages, formative assessment will include online discussions examining specific occupational health issues. Summative assessment will consist of written assignments examining aspects of occupational health theory and practice, enabling the student to critically appraise the context and scientific literature, demonstrate a detailed understanding of the topic and reflect on how their new knowledge will affect their practice.

The MSc dissertation stage will be wholly assessed based on the final dissertation. Expectations for the format, submission and marking of the dissertation will follow the current Senate Assessment Regulations, supplemented where appropriate with additional requirements of the Programme/School/College and any specific requirements arising from the nature of the project undertaken.

During the Master’s stage you will be expected to keep in regular contact with your supervisor. You will also complete a progress report every two months in conjunction with your supervisor.

Career Prospects

At present there is a shortage of occupational health clinicians/practitioners of all levels in the UK. Although this course will not give you formal professional accreditation, it provides the opportunity to gain a sound basis of knowledge for practice, and demonstrates a commitment to your own further professional development in occupational health.

For qualified doctors wanting to enter specialist training in occupational medicine, the Postgraduate Diploma stage of the course will provide knowledge of the bulk of the topics needed for part 1 of the Membership Exam of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (MFOM). All teaching is online, with students and faculty internationally based, and students can choose to study individual modules as CPD or towards a Certificate or Diploma award. The Diploma programme includes a residential component towards the end of the students studies.

The main aim of the programme is to provide health professionals working in remote, and in some instances potentially hazardous locations, the knowledge and skills to operate effectively in this environment using an evidence based approach. Programme Structure

The programme is designed to be completed in the time frames indicated below; studied part time, with exit points as follows:

Stage 1, Postgraduate Certificate in Remote and Offshore Medicine - minimum of 18 months, maximum of 3 years

Stage 2, Postgraduate Diploma in Remote and Offshore Medicine - minimum of 3 years, maximum of 5 years

For both Certificate and Diploma, Module C01 must be taken first, the remainder can be taken in any order depending on module availability.

Certificate

Certificate Level – equivalent to 60 credits
Students wishing to exit the programme at certificate level must complete 6 modules in total:

-Module 1: Health and Wellbeing of the Remote Worker
-Module 10: Evidence and Research in Remote Medicine
-Three additional modules from the compulsory list below
-One module from the optional list below

Students who initially opt to study at certificate level have the option to continue studying to Diploma level after successful completion of the 6 modules.

Diploma

Diploma Level – equivalent to 120 credits
Students wishing to exit the programme at Diploma level must complete 12 modules in total:

-Ten compulsory modules
-Two modules from the optional list below

There is a compulsory two-day student residential at the end of the taught component in Edinburgh which all students must attend to be awarded the Diploma. This is not a requirement for Certificate students.

Students are taught by the ROM Tutors and study alongside our Diploma and Certificate students.

DDRC CPD

Entry Requirements

Normally: an undergraduate health related degree or relevant health related professional qualification and current work experience in the Remote Medical Care area. If you don't meet these criteria you are welcome to contact us to discuss your application further as all applicants are individually reviewed with regard to their previous qualifications and experience and you may be able to join the programme. Those applicants whose first language is not English must be able to demonstrate a satisfactory level of both spoken and written English. This should be equivalent to at least the level of post-secondary (high) school. Fees

The payment plan options for all new students joining the programme will be to either pay the programme fees in full (this option protects from further inflationary increases) or to pay per module (module fees are subject to inflationary increases each year). Key Features of Graduate Entry Medicine Programme

The Graduate Entry Medicine Programme is a fully independent four-year programme based primarily in Swansea and west Wales, although students may undergo placements in other parts of Wales if they wish. The Graduate Entry Medicine Programme consists of Phase I (Years 1 + 2) and Phase II (Years 3 + 4). Each year is mapped onto GMC Tomorrow’s Doctors 2009 (TD09), where 3 Modules – Scholar and Scientist, Practitioner and Professional, reflect the TD09 outcome areas.

The Graduate Entry Medicine programme involves a spiral, integrated curriculum structured around 6 body system ‘Themes’ - Behaviour, Defence, Development, Movement, Nutrition and Transport - with 96 clinical cases presented in 70 ‘learning weeks’ (65 in Phase I and 5 in Phase II).

GAMSAT

GAMSAT is a professionally designed and marked selection test for medical schools offering graduate-entry programmes open to graduates of any discipline. You will need to sit GAMSAT if you intend to apply for entry to the GEM Programme here in Swansea. There are no exemptions from the GAMSAT test.

GAMSAT evaluates the nature and extent of abilities and skills gained through prior experience and learning, including the mastery and use of concepts in basic science, as well as the acquisition of more general skills in problem solving, critical thinking and writing.

How we decide

Applicants, who meet the minimum entry requirements are ranked based upon their GAMSAT scores. The applicants who have scored most highly are then invited to attend the Selection Centre at the Medical School in the Spring. Please note that all candidates must attend in person and that we do not have the capacity to offer remote interviews, for example via Skype.

We will attempt to inform all applicants whether they have been successful. All candidates who are successful in gaining an interview will also be invited to attend a Visit Day at the University's Singleton Campus.

Format of the Selection Centre

After an introduction and a “setting the scene” session, you will be asked to sit a written assessment of 30 minutes duration. This situational judgement test is not designed to assess your academic ability, but to try and identify those applicants whose personal and academic qualities are suitable to a career in medicine.

Following the written assessment, you will have a tour of the university. You will learn more about the course and see life here at Swansea through the eyes of a medical student. It is not just about Swansea deciding if you are right for our course, but also the opportunity for you to see if Swansea is right for YOU.

After lunch, you will then be invited to attend two separate interviews, each of 20 minutes duration. They are conducted by pairs of trained interviewers taken from our highly trained panel of clinicians, academics, medical students and members of the public (lay) interviewers. Your personal statement will be considered and discussed during your interview.

The interview process is designed to take account of the personal and academic qualities needed as a doctor, as set out in ‘Good Medical Practice’, and the capacity to meet the outcomes of ‘Tomorrows Doctors’. In summary these are:

Once the interviews are completed, we will assess the overall performance of each candidate. Due to the very competitive nature of the selection process, it is only those candidates who score highest who will be offered a place at Swansea.

All medical students during their training, and all doctors once qualified, remain subject to scrutiny regarding fitness to practise throughout their professional lives. This ensures that they are fit to continue in their chosen career.

For your safety, as well as the safety of your future patients, you will be required to undergo an Occupational Health Assessment, which includes a Fitness to Practice assessment, as well as a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prior to beginning your studies on the Graduate Entry Medicine Programme. The graduate program in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene is offered by the School of Population and Public Health and is a complement to its graduate programs in Population and Public Health. The vision of the graduate program in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene is a world in which risks from occupational and environmental hazards are minimized by their recognition, evaluation, and control, to the benefit of workplace and community health and well-being.

Students interested in research or professional careers in any aspect of workplace or community environmental exposures and their impact on human health are encouraged to apply. The program's major research themes include acoustics, noise and vibration; exposure assessment; analytical methods development using immunological, biological, chemical and microsensor methods; occupational and environmental epidemiology; and risk assessment and translation of research to policy.

Program Requirements

Students in the M.Sc. program may choose to follow a project or thesis option. Because of the varied backgrounds of students, both options are relatively course-intensive and include specific non-credit requirements related to adult education in addition to regular coursework.

Students in the project option must complete 27 credits chosen from a list of specified core courses, a further 9 credits of approved electives, and a 6-credit project based on a four-month co-op placement (culminating in a comprehensive technical report and presentations) to make up a total of 42 credits of course and project work. After completion of all required components students must also pass a comprehensive examination.

Students in the thesis option must complete 18 credits chosen from a list of specified core courses, a further 12 credits of approved electives, and a 12-credit research thesis (culminating in an oral examination) to make up a total of 42 credits of course and research work.

The aim of these programs is to provide advanced education in pain management for graduates in medicine, dentistry, nursing, physiotherapy, psychology and other disciplines involved in pain management.

Following the core curriculum of the International Association for the Study of Pain, subjects have been designed to update and expand knowledge in the basic sciences, concepts and procedures of pain assessment and management in a variety of human settings. The master's degrees are articulated with the graduate diploma and graduate certificate. That is to say, coursework undertaken for the diplomas or certificate may be counted towards credits required for the master's degrees. Conversely, someone enrolling in the master's program can be awarded a graduate certificate or graduate diploma if circumstances prevent them from completing the master's. Students who have attained an average mark of 70 in all the coursework components of the Master of Medicine/Masters of Science in Medicine may request to undertake the dissertation unit of study in which students undertake a small supervised individual project in applied pain management and write it up in a dissertation. Those who successfully complete the formal dissertation component graduate with Honours. Master's students who choose not to undertake the honours component but complete their coursework units of study with a minimum average mark of 75 per cent will be awarded pass with merit.
