Our part-time blended learning MSc Occupational Medicine course provides an overview of the whole spectrum of medicine and hygiene within the workplace.
The course is aimed at GPs who want to gain an academic qualification in occupational medicine and doctors already working in the field - especially in specialist training posts - who want to prepare for professional exams with the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM).
This MSc is also suitable for doctors in other disciplines who have an interest in occupational medicine.
You will benefit from access to a range of specialist knowledge and resources within occupational health and examine the evidence on which occupational health practice is based.
The course takes place in a research-enriched environment and, for those progressing to the third year of the MSc, you will have the opportunity to undertake research-based activities relevant to occupational health, including formulating a research question, designing and executing an appropriate study and drawing valid conclusions through writing a dissertation.
Our course follows the syllabus requirements of the FOM (London and Ireland).
This course aims to provide you with the information required by medical practitioners working in the field of occupational medicine, and to allow you to pursue an academic qualification in this subject.
We also aim to provide you with the benefit of blended learning methodology, which allows you to apply the knowledge gained during your day-to-day work.
Compliant course content
This course adheres to the syllabus requirements of the FOM, RCP (London) and RCP (Ireland).
The course comprises a blend of specially commissioned written materials in electronic format (PDF), together with interactive teaching material, all delivered via the University's virtual learning environment, Blackboard.
In Year 1, you are required to attend in Manchester for a one-day seminar associated with Module 1 in Month 3, and the same for Module 2 in month 5 for September starters, in Month 6 for April starters and for one exam day in Month 10.
You are allocated to tutorial groups for Modules 4 to 8, each supported by a specialist in occupational medicine. Tutorials are delivered via telephone or web conference.
In Year 2, you are required to attend in Manchester for a four-day practical course in Month 5 and for one exam day in Month 10.
In Year 3, you are required to attend a three-day MSc dissertation course held at the University in Month 1.
Some components of the course are held jointly with students on the MSc Occupational Hygiene course.
All taught course units will be assessed via examinations held at the University at intervals throughout the course, and the third year will be assessed via submission of a dissertation.
Assessment is by eight examination papers, one per course module. The first will be sat at Seminar 1 (Year 1, Month 3) and the second at Seminar 2 (Year 1, Month 5 for September starters and Month 6 for April starters). The remaining Year 1 assessments will be sat in Month 10. For Year 2, assessments will be held in Month 5 and 10.
If you wish to proceed to the MSc, you are also required to complete a third year, during which you will attend a mandatory three-day residential course (in Month 1) and prepare a dissertation. For doctors in approved training posts, the dissertation may also be eligible for submission for the MFOM.

The Master in Aviation Medicine (MAvMed) programme is a fully distance-taught that actively encourages international student enrolment.
The University of Otago is a world leader in terms of offering aviation medicine training and professional development for the aviation medicine industry and has 100+ students studying in the Middle East, North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. This is the only aviation medicine programme in the world to offer distance education. It is supported by academic staff and alumni with strong links to the aviation industry.

A candidate who has completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Aeromedical Retrieval and Transport, Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine, Postgraduate Certificate in Aeromedical Retrieval and Transport, or Postgraduate Certificate in Occupational Medicine may be exempted from one or more papers in the programme for the degree to a maximum of 120 points.

Learning and teaching methodology

The Aerospace Medicine course aims to provide medical graduates with advanced theoretical and practical training in the physiology, psychology and clinical medicine of humans exposed to or working in the aviation environment.
The programme will also prepare students for the examination in the Diploma in Aviation Medicine, DAVMed which is run through the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM). More details can be found here
The Aerospace Medicine course is a unique study pathway that provides physicians with comprehensive theoretical and practical instruction in advanced aviation physiology, psychology, pathology, clinical and operational aviation medicine.
This course includes time based at the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine (CAM), as the Centre provides an appropriate location for valuable elements of the teaching and visits to some of the service and civilian establishments used. The Centre also offers unique practical facilities which are available to students on the course.
You will complete the MSc course in one year, studying September to September. If you are following the MSc pathway, you must take modules totalling 180 credits to meet the requirements of the qualification, of which 60 will come from a research project and written dissertation.
The Postgraduate Diploma pathway requires modules with a total of 120 credits to complete the programme and can be conducted in just over six months.
If carrying out the MSc you will receive approximately 510 contact hours at King’s and various external study locations, primarily the RAF Centre for Aviation Medicine at Henlow – this includes lectures, seminars, practical sessions.
If you are studying for the full MSc qualification, you will be expected to spend approximately 600 hours on the research project module and thesis.

The course at King’s is delivered at an approved centre of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) to specifically deliver education and training for individuals wishing to take the RCP, Faculty of Occupational Medicine examination leading to the award of the Diploma in Aviation Medicine.
This course is primarily taught at the King’s College London Guy’s campus, with some teaching at the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine at Henlow as well as other locations, mainly in the UK but commonly with one overseas visit. Please note that locations are determined by where each module is taught and may vary.
Career opportunities in aerospace medicine are varied. Many undertaking specialist training have already been employed specifically for the role and are sponsored to undertake these courses. However others use such training so as to better equip themselves for potential employment.
Areas of possible careers include with airlines, aviation regulators, air traffic services, military aviation and space agencies as well as in academic or commercial research organisations. Some aviation medical examiners (AMEs) undertake the DAvMed. Appointment as an AME in the UK is now restricted to doctors on the GMC specialist register.
Previous graduates of the M.Sc programme and DAvMed courses have been employed in all these areas and enjoyed a varied and challenging career.
Providing clinical care in remote locations has its own unique challenges and requires specialist knowledge and skills. This flexible part-time eLearning programme is aimed at health professionals working internationally in remote and offshore locations. All teaching is online, with students and faculty internationally based, and students can choose to study individual modules as CPD or towards a Certificate or Diploma award. The Diploma programme includes a residential component towards the end of the students studies.
The main aim of the programme is to provide health professionals working in remote, and in some instances potentially hazardous locations, the knowledge and skills to operate effectively in this environment using an evidence based approach. Stage 1, Postgraduate Certificate in Remote and Offshore Medicine - minimum of 18 months, maximum of 3 years
Stage 2, Postgraduate Diploma in Remote and Offshore Medicine - minimum of 3 years, maximum of 5 years
For both Certificate and Diploma, Module C01 must be taken first, the remainder can be taken in any order depending on module availability.
Certificate Level – equivalent to 60 credits
Students wishing to exit the programme at certificate level must complete 6 modules in total:

Students who initially opt to study at certificate level have the option to continue studying to Diploma level after successful completion of the 6 modules.

There is a compulsory two-day student residential at the end of the taught component in Edinburgh which all students must attend to be awarded the Diploma. This is not a requirement for Certificate students.

It is possible for students to study individual modules as standalone CPDs each worth 100 hours of study. These modules are open to everyone who has a relevant health professional qualification, but who may not yet have enough work experience in the field to meet the entry criteria for the full Certificate or Diploma. Students are taught by the ROM Tutors and study alongside our Diploma and Certificate students.

The payment plan options for all new students joining the programme will be to either pay the programme fees in full (this option protects from further inflationary increases) or to pay per module (module fees are subject to inflationary increases each year). CPD students pay on a per module basis.
