It will also develop specialist knowledge and skills in aspects such as health assessment, clinical care and case management.

We provide a balance of 50% theory and 50% practice. This will be facilitated in an area specific to Occupational Health Nursing. There will also be opportunities to gain alternative practice experience in another relevant setting during the course.

Graduate destinations

You'll be able to work as an Occupational Health Nurse, and eligible to apply for registration on the NMC Nursing register in your named pathway. Previous students have gone into successful careers within occupational health, as well as working as health and safety advisers, case managers and counsellors.

You may also wish to continue your education further through one of our MSc courses in Practice Development.

You must have access to a Practice Teacher, i.e. SCPHN (OH) with an NMC approved Practice Teacher qualification. This is an NMC requirement. Applications should be made before 30 June for September start. You will be interviewed for selection for this programme. During the interview you will be offered advice on the suitability of the award dependent on factors such as currency of prior learning, and your personal and professional development needs. The Postgraduate Diploma prepares you to function as a specialist practitioner. You would normally be required to undertake the first six core modules listed below in order to achieve this. Our MSc will help you continue with your academic studies as you undertake an extended project, relevant to clinical practice. You will normally be expected to complete the additional 60 credit Research in Practice module in order to achieve this, which will take a further one year.

By critically analysing leadership and management in clinical practice you will examine the complexity of delivering health and social care services especially in relation to professional occupational health nursing.

It offers you the opportunity to gain registration as an occupational health nurse and for academic development at master’s level.

Course details

You develop public health practice knowledge and skills in addressing health inequalities and the health needs of the working population, through development of expertise in hazard and risk assessment, health surveillance and protection, sickness absence management and public health leadership skills, to enable you to contribute to improving the health of the working population.

What you study

You study evidence based practice and the factors which impact on the health and well-being of the working population; the recognition of hazards and risks within the working environment, the application of health and safety legislation, health surveillance and sickness absence management skills within the workplace; public health, personal leadership philosophies and behaviours and their application within organisational settings; public health nursing practice, legal and ethical dimensions also designing and managing a service evaluation.

Teaching

The programme comprises 50% theory and 50% practice within an integrated approach. Practice based learning – you are allocated a practice teacher by your sponsoring organisation who facilitates your learning in practice and is responsible for the assessment of your competence in practice.

Teaching methods include lecturers, seminars, experiential learning, scenarios, problem based learning, case study work, simulations, action learning sets, and peer led seminars and discussions.

Learning in practice is supported with the development of a practice progress file, which includes self-assessment activities, learning contracts, learning logs, reflective dialogue and discussion with practice teachers, mentors and academic staff.

Assessments include examinations, a defended poster, essays, case study analysis, research proposal and simulations. Practice is assessed via the practice progress file through the mechanism of the tripartite meetings which include you, your practice teacher and your academic mentor.

Employability

Following successful completion of the required theoretical learning outcomes (120 credits at master’s level) and the specialist community public health nursing practice competencies (NMC 2004) you are eligible to register as a specialist community public health nurse (occupational health) and are eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Occupational Health Nursing).

Following completion of the PgDip in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Occupational Health Nursing) an opportunity will be available to continue your studies and complete a 60 credit master’s level dissertation module leading to an MSC Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Occupational Health Nursing). This is undertaken as one year part-time or six months full-time study after SCPHN (OH) registration with the NMC. It must be completed within five years of commencing the PgDip.

The course prepares you to work as an occupational health nurse and to take practice forward to meet the challenges of improving health within a wide range of workplace settings.

Candidates for the MSc programme in Occupational Health online must meet one of the following criteria:

•A Level 8 Honours primary degree (minimum Second Class Honours, Grade 2) in a relevant area, for example health-related (Public Health, Nursing, Medicine, Environmental Health, Psychology/Behavioural Science, Physiotherapy); Engineering and Human Resource Management and relevant professional experience1 or work placement in an associated Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare area.

This award winning programme gained the Innovations in Occupational Health Award in 2011. It is led by Anne Harriss who was named Occupational Health Nurse of the Year in 2011. Anne and a programme graduate then gained the 2013 Innovations in Occupational Health. In the same year Anne achieved Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

Occupational health (OH) nursing is a distinct specialty within the family of public health nursing. OH nurses practice in a wide diversity of settings within both the public and private sectors. In addition to gaining employment within the NHS, graduates of programmes offered by LSBU have gained employment with international airlines, the financial services sector, legal practices and manufacturing industries. Others have set up their own successful consultancies.

The course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and you spend 50% of the course in an OH practice setting. Shared learning with other practitioners who work in the OH setting is encouraged.

The degree course consists of six modules each worth 20 credit points. Of these; one is a research module and is taught across a range of primary care programmes. The remaining five are OH pathway specific. Some modules are available on a standalone basis. Placements

It is a Nursing and Midwifery (NMC) requirement that you must gain experience in the OH practice setting throughout your studies. This can be achieved through employment in an OH service or as a result of a practice placement undertaken on an unpaid basis. In order that you gain a placement appropriate to your learning needs and personal circumstances. This experience is negotiated and secured by the student.

Teaching and learning

Each module equates to 200 hours of student effort, 36 hours of which take place in the classroom. This is supplemented with blended learning initiatives including electronic learning activities and workplace visits.

Teaching consists of formal lectures, seminars, group work and field work activities including a risk assessment activity which takes place in the Palm House of Kew Gardens.

A variety of assessment strategies are used including essays, case studies, reports, a professional practice portfolio and one examination.

This course in detail

The course will be taught alongside the well-established and highly-regarded BA in Mental Health Nursing and our new four-year BSc Adult and Mental Health Nursing and BSc Children's and Mental Health Nursing.

We are currently redeveloping and revalidating all of our Pre-Registration Nursing programmes and we expect to run new MSc and BSc Mental Health Nursing courses from September 2016.

Working at master's level, you will focus on developing a knowledge base in mental health nursing that is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of mental health nursing. This will be informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field.

You will acquire specific skills, knowledge and competence in your chosen field and more broadly will be enquiry focused, reflective, innovative, confident and self-aware.

You will complete a master’s level research project involving primary data collection; a service improvement project, a critical review of the literature, or other scholarly output and will be supported to publish your work.

Teaching and learning

In health and social care no professional group works in isolation. Oxford Brookes teaches a wide range of pre-qualification and foundation courses including health and social care, nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, osteopathy, operating department practice, paramedic emergency care, and social work. You will share your learning with these other health care students. This is a key component of the course as it is essential to developing your teamwork skills and your understanding of the other roles you will encounter in practice.

The accelerated design of the course allows the full-time professional training to be condensed into two years, rather than the traditional three-year route. - Introduction to occupation
This module develops an understanding of the healthy individual across the age range. You will explore people's roles and relationships and their engagement in occupation/activity. The environments in which individuals participate such as; home, school, and community will be considered. Occupational therapy philosophy will be introduced and the scope of the profession explored. An understanding of relevant underpinning knowledge such as: human development, psychosocial theories, anatomy and physiology will be developed. Professional ethics and behaviour will also be introduced.

- Assessment of occupational performance
In this module the focus is on the assessment phase of the occupational therapy (OT) process. You will be able to appraise the concepts of assessment and evaluate standardised and non-standardised assessments. Occupational/activity analysis is introduced and evidence-based practice skills begin to develop. This module will explore common experiences associated with the ageing process.

- Enabling occupational performance and participation 1
This module focuses on the processes of problem identification, goal setting and intervention planning and introduces intervention strategies. You will continue to develop knowledge of theories and models influencing Occupational Therapy practice. Evidence-based practice begins to emerge more strongly.

Year 2:
- Enabling occupational performance and participation 2

- Leadership and service innovation in occupational therapy
This module focuses on entrepreneurship, service innovation and development, it consolidates knowledge and skills related to personal management and prepares you to manage the complexities of a dynamic health and social care environment. The development of professional identity will also be explored.

- Research and scholarship in occupational therapy (MSc qualification only)
This is an optional module for the award of a preregistration Masters in Occupational Therapy. Students who pass two out of three first year modules on the first attempt and achieve the required marks are given the option to enrol on Research and scholarship in occupational therapy module. This module is the equivalent to three modules and runs concurrent with other second year modules and a placement. Successful completion of this and the six postgraduate modules will result in being awarded preregistration Masters in Occupational Therapy.

All modules are assessed by a mix of written assignments, case studies, critical review, presentations, examinations, practice placements and a research proposal (MSc students only).

Employability

As well as the practical skills required to work as an occupational therapist, this course course develops the employability skills needed for a successful career, including verbal and written communication, negotiation and liaison, team work, organisation and self-management, leadership and management, and personal resilience as well as the ability to work with a diverse range of people whilst demonstrating the values and attributes as described in the NHS constitution.

- Occupational therapy as a career
On graduating you are eligible to apply for registration as an occupational therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This allows you to practice as an occupational therapist within the NHS, community services and local authorities, as well as social enterprises and the private sector. Other settings include prisons, residential and nursing homes, schools and social services.

- Salary
Occupational therapists beginning their career as allied health professionals in the NHS typically as a Band 5 with a starting salary of about £21,692. Salaries in local government are at similar levels.

Career development offers opportunities to move to higher grades in team leadership, clinical expert, service management and consultant therapist roles. Within the NHS, this can mean salaries in the band 7 and 8 range.

Placements

During the course you are required to successfully complete over 1000 practice placement hours within a broad variety of health and social care settings, meeting the registration requirements of the College of Occupational Therapists and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

At LSBU, we work closely with a number of healthcare organisations to provide a wide range of suitable clinical placements. You will therefore gain experience of working with:

Structure of placement learning:
Practice placements are in four blocks and are all full-time. You will work under the guidance of an occupational therapist (educator). Although sometimes challenging, practice learning is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of learning to be an occupational therapist.

Placement settings:
Placements will predominantly be within the Greater London area in the NHS, local authority, voluntary, social enterprise, charities and private sectors. Applicants should be aware that they may need to cover travel costs and placements could require them to commute across London (up to two hours).

The MSc in Adult and Mental Health Nursing prepares you for a rewarding career at the forefront of modern healthcare. Mental illness has a huge impact on the physical health of an individual. People with mental health conditions are at a higher risk of experiencing physical health problems, such as diabetes and heart conditions. There is a need to develop a nursing workforce that is fit for the current demands of healthcare in the UK.

Placements

Overview

Public health skills and knowledge are fundamental to addressing many of the 21st century's complex health problems and to achieving public health objectives for improving the health of populations, communities and individuals.

This 12-unit course provides students with the full range of quantitative, analytical and communication skills necessary to work in the broad domain of public health. It especially focuses on developing skills in the quantitative methods of the population-based health sciences and their problem-solving application for public health, health care and emerging health issues in Australia, developing countries, and globally.

Our program offers you flexibility, with a range of unit choices and the opportunity to specialise in clinical epidemiology, clinical research, health economics, health services management, international health, public health, occupational and environmental health and research streams.

Professional accreditation

Applicants who wish to undertake some clinical streams of study - (Emergency Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Intensive Care Nursing or Nurse Practitioner) will be required to have registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and appropriate clinical employment in an approved clinical agency prior to application. Progression to further studies

Students entering at Entry levels 1 and 2 can complete a research thesis (24 points) that will provide a pathway to a higher degree by research.

Alternative exit(s)

Students may exit this course early and apply to graduate with one of the following awards, provided they have satisfied the requirements for that award during their enrolment in the Masters course:

- Graduate Certificate of Advanced Nursing after successful completion of 24 points with a minimum of 18 credit points at level 4 or above. Students who complete 24 points from a particular specialisation in Part A will have the name of the specialisation on their transcript.

- Graduate Diploma of Advanced Nursing after successful completion of 48 points, with a minimum of 36 credit points at level 4 or above. Students who complete 24 points from a particular specialisation in Part A will have the name of the specialisation on their transcript.

Our Child Nursing course provides students with an opportunity to gain an Integrated MNurs/Registered Nurse qualification and acts as preparation both for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and for taking on the responsibilities and accountability involved. It aims to provide graduates holding a health-related degree the opportunity to study at Level 7 – the theory that underpins nursing practice and develops knowledge and skills through evidence-based learning. Practice experience is gained in both hospital and community settings. On successful completion of this course students will be able to enter Part one (Child) of the Register held by the NMC.

The Child Nursing course will prepare students to be safe, effective and caring practitioners who are ready to work with children, young people and their families with a variety of care needs in a range of settings from home to hospital. In addition, the development of the children’s nursing modules has been informed by key guidance and the contemporary issues challenging the profession and service, such as the recognition of the sick child, safeguarding of children, transition into adult care, involvement of children, young people and their parents in service development (RCPCH 2010), promotion of mental health and psychological wellbeing (DOH 2006), withholding and withdrawal of life sustaining treatment (RCPCH 2004) and standards for the development of “young people friendly” services (DOH 2011).

Continuing changes to children and young people’s health services require nurses who can adapt to new ways of working whilst being able to uphold and assure high quality nursing care for the children, young people and families in their care. A key aim, therefore, is to equip children’s nursing students to thrive in such changing environments and to understand the many factors that influence service provision.

Children’s nursing students are encouraged to be passionate, assertive and creative in working collaboratively with other professionals and families in the pursuit of excellent and innovative care for all children, young people and their families.

Course structure

The framework for the MNurs Award has been specifically designed to permit Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) as described by the NMC with a view to preparing students who are already graduates and/or who have relevant clinical experience for registration. APL / APEL will involve students making a written submission to detail how the requirements of the course have been met through prior study as well as providing evidence of relevant practice experience in a health care support worker role.

The course involves continuous assessment of both theory and practice. A variety of assessment methods are used including practical examinations, case studies, essays, written examinations and presentations. Students are also assessed against the NMC’s competencies for registration during a series of practice placements in hospital and the community.

The MNurs course prepares successful students for a career as a registered nurse in the relevant field of practice. Newly qualified nurses can apply for posts within a hospital or community setting. The MNurs course may also enable individuals to develop a clinical research career within the NHS.

In line with the principles and values which underpin the NHS constitution, the University expects all students undertaking programmes which lead to registration as a health professional to demonstrate the NHS values.

98% of students go on to work or further study within six months of graduation (Unistats, 2014).
