It offers physiotherapists a range of opportunities to develop an evidence based approach to clinical reasoning through the ability to identify, analyse and interpret the current best available evidence and apply this to practice of continence care using appropriate assessment and therapeutic intervention skills. Students will study in-depth issues related to both male and female continence and pelvic floor rehabilitation.

The modules include teaching blocks at the Faculty of Health Studies, University of Bradford to encourage shared learning. Peer physical examination is used during teaching, viable alternatives are available if required. Further learning and teaching on the practice module occurs in the clinical setting. Students must therefore have access to an appropriate clinical caseload in order to be able to undertake the practice module. Each student will be allocated a clinical mentor for the practice module.

This is the only programme of its kind in the UK offering this specialist area of study. The Certificate was developed and is regularly reviewed jointly by Pelvic, Obstetric and Gynaecological Physiotherapy (POGP) (formerly the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Women’s Health) and the University of Bradford. 

This ensures the continued clinical relevance of the programme. A further strength of the programme is the use of external lecturers who are specialists within their field and continue to have a clinical caseload.

The course is designed to meet the continuous professional development needs for people that complete medical ultrasound examinations. It develops the ultrasound scanning skills for a range of professionals including allied health professionals, midwives, nurses, GPs and medics, and can be tailored to meet your individual training needs.

You can study the ultrasound scanning short course which provides the theoretical underpinning and clinical competencies in a narrow area of ultrasound. This module can be tailored to a range of ultrasound practice and is suitable for a range of practitioners. Examples include first trimester ultrasound scanning, deep vein thrombosis scanning, head and neck ultrasound and musculoskeletal ultrasound. You are assessed by the course team.

Part-time – typically 12-24 months for each award stage, plus a dissertation for masters

For the part time postgraduate certificate and diploma routes, you attend on a day release basis, normally a Tuesday. The stand alone modules have a mixture of taught sessions and distance learning.

Teaching methods used during your academic blocks include lectures, seminars, group work, and practical workshops. The state-of-the-art Regional Ultrasound Simulation Centre here on campus is fully incorporated into the teaching.

This is Europe’s only graduate course in reproductive health research and is designed for those interested in acquiring the research skills necessary to conduct policy-relevant research into sexual and reproductive health. It provides a non-clinical foundation in family planning, obstetric health, AIDS and sexually-transmitted infections.

This Master's course is recognized by the ESRC as providing high quality research training and a small number of ESRC scholarships (including 1+3 scholarships) are available to UK or EU residents. These are advertised each year with the School scholarships information.

The curriculum has a focus on middle- and low-income settings but also provides excellent training in the principles and methods of research for high-income countries.

Careers

Graduates go into public health and reproductive health programmes, evaluation of family planning programmes, research for governmental and non-governmental agencies and university teaching.

Project Report:

During the summer months (July-August), students complete a research project. Acceptable types of project are: data analysis; a project proposal; an original literature or policy review.

Students normally remain in London for the preparation of their project report. Exceptionally, and only if appropriate, part of the project period may be spent away from the School, whether in the UK or abroad. Arrangements for this must be discussed and agreed with the Course Director.

The course is designed to produce clinically competent advanced practitioners, who will be able to meet the needs of the service in a changing health care environment.

The course was planned in full consultation with a wide range of relevant professionals from the South West region, who are experts in the field of diagnostic ultrasound or associated clinical specialisms. These experts are instrumental in the delivery of the course, along with experienced educationalists from within the University.

Postgraduate Certificate (Year 1)

Postgraduate Diploma (Year 2)

Assessment will involve a variety of methods including coursework, presentations, seminars, written and practical examinations.

The programme, accredited by the Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE), will teach you how to use ultrasound imaging in clinical practice. You will be taught the principles and practice of ultrasound science, the practical applications of ultrasound and develop an appreciation of the principles of scientific investigation. Throughout the programme, we will assess your clinical practice. This does not just mean technique, but also knowledge, comprehension, communication, analysis and management – in terms of the patient, your technology and your personal qualities. We will also discuss medico-legal, ethical and professional issues.

Through an introduction to the physics, equipment, safety and relevant professional issues alongside clinical modules, you will develop an understanding of current techniques and proficiency in medical ultrasound. You may choose clinical modules in obstetric and gynaecology ultrasound, general medical ultrasound or vascular ultrasound. You can take a work-based module to meet your individual needs within the PG Certificate in Specialist Ultrasound Practice. These options allow you to build a personalised, proficiency-based learning programme.

This Medical Ultrasound programme is ideal for healthcare professionals wanting to develop new skills in ultrasound, experienced sonographers extending proficiency in a specialist area, or clinicians who wish to utilise ultrasound imaging in clinical practice.

You can choose to take the 60-credit PG Certificate, which is only 9 months, the 120-credit PG Diploma, which lasts 18 months, or the 180-credit MSc, which lasts 27 months and involves an extended research project in your final year.

Course purpose

This Ultrasound programme is for radiographers, doctors, midwives, clinical scientists and other professionals wishing to practice clinical ultrasound. The programme provides knowledge to enable integration of theoretical concepts with ultrasound proficiency. Students may exit with the 60 credit PG Certificate, the 120 credit PG Diploma or progress to the MSc.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

You will have approximately 132 hours of academic teaching on a block release pattern. You will undertake a minimum of 21 hours a week of supervised scanning throughout the course. A member of the programme team will visit you at your workplace to support you and observe your work. We will expect you to undertake around 15 to 20 hours of independent study per week.

Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

How you will be taught

What you will study

The programme is delivered on a modular basis over a period of 3 and half years. One module is taken per semester and semesters start in September and January. There are two intakes per year.

You are required to take four modules and a dissertation in order to complete the full MSc but can exit with a Postgraduate Certificate after two modules and a Postgraduate Diploma after four modules. In order to exit with a named award the award pre-requisites must be met.

Students undertaking the Diploma or MSc must take one research core, one professional core, the award core requirements and an option module where available. Some awards have two award cores and no option module can be taken.

Modules available:
The module portfolio comprises a choice of two research modules, a number of professional modules relating to leadership, quality and clinical governance, and learning, teaching and assessment in practice among others.

A number of clinically relevant modules are also available depending on the chosen award. Some modules are only offered every second year and you will be helped to decide the best portfolio of modules to meet your individual needs.

How you will be assessed

This PGDip midwifery programme is for qualified adult branch nurses on the NMC Register who wish to become registered midwives. Applicants must normally have completed at least six months as a staff nurse and possess a minimum second class honours degree (or equivalent). This is a shortened programme of approximately 3,000 hours.

You will study normal midwifery practice, complex midwifery and obstetric situations, organisation and models of care, health promotion, newborn care and assessment, principal methods for health care research and evidence based decision making in health care.

Students on this programme will be employed by one of the Schools partner NHS trusts for the duration of the programme.

Teaching

How you learn

The teaching is delivered at Teesside University through academic blocks. 

The clinical route is developed over five two-week blocks. 

The point of care route is delivered over five two-day blocks to suit busy clinical workloads.

Both routes are supported through e-learning. You will also develop your practical skills within your clinical placement. It is a fusion which allows you to become an autonomous safe ultrasound practitioner. Teaching methods used during your academic blocks include lectures, seminars and practical workshops. The state-of-the-art Regional Ultrasound Simulation Centre here on campus is full incorporated into the teaching.

Diagnostic radiography and medical imaging are core components of modern healthcare and rely on rapidly changing diagnostic modalities. It is widely accepted that medical imaging will remain an essential component of diagnostic services for many years to come and that the demand for imaging services will continue to rise.

Recent modernisation within the NHS has raised the profile and extended the scope of practice for allied health professionals (AHPs). Diagnostic radiographers, as one of the sixteen registered AHP groups, are now required to build and extend their scope of professional expertise within a multi-professional setting. Continuing professional development (CPD) is a requirement for all AHPs in the UK in order to secure re-registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and to retain the right to practise within the UK. Radiographers are therefore required to evidence their learning and to demonstrate how this learning has informed practice.

Diagnostic radiography is a profession which is both intellectually and scientifically demanding. Professional responsibility includes a need to be able to formulate imaging standards and strategies as well as assume a greater degree of autonomy within different imaging modalities. To practise effectively the radiographer needs to be able to analyse and evaluate the requirements of healthcare delivery and to be aware of the roles and skills of other healthcare professionals. To optimise patient care the diagnostic radiographer must adopt a critical approach to decision-making in the context of current practice.

This MSc provides CPD opportunities for diagnostic radiographers and other healthcare professionals, but does not lead to UK registration with the HCPC or the right to practice within the UK. Therefore, this course aims to foster an intellectual approach to personal and professional development, encouraging diagnostic radiographers to challenge and progress radiography practice in response to evolutionary change. The course aims to provide flexibility in learning with the opportunity for learners to select modules in order to support individual practice development.

This course uses a wide range of learning and teaching methods, based on a problem based learning approach with students working independently and collaboratively.  The teaching and learning strategies are designed to enable independent progress within a supportive framework.

The MPH in Global Health is intended to provide candidates with a clear understanding of global health issues and how those issues affect public health policy and practice. 

The MPH in Global Health programme will offer solid public health training and exposure to global health politics, policies, systems and practices through didactic teaching sessions, team-based research and presentations, and individual work-based projects or dissertations.

Students undertake taught modules over two semesters. Students will be required to submit a dissertation on a pre-approved global health topic. Successful completion of the dissertation and the assessments of the taught modules will lead to award of the MPH in Global Health.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Semester 1

Public Health Sciences (25 CATS)

  • This module discusses the collection of demographic data, demographic analysis techniques and health effects of population characteristics. It also demonstrates understanding of epidemiological concepts and methodologies, and the appropriate interpretation of descriptive and analytic epidemiological study findings. The basic principles of theory and practice in qualitative health research are discusses and critical assessment and appropriate interpretation of published health evidence demonstrated.

Determinants & Improvement of Health (15 CATS)

  • This module explores the factors that underlie health and disease and will examine variations and inequalities in health; lifestyles and behaviours that impact on health and how our social and physical environment impacts on health. Students will also be given an introduction to health promotion and the planning of health improvement programmes. 

Medical Statistics (20 CATS)

  • This module teaches how to formulate research problems in statistical terms, to design informative experiments, to apply appropriate statistical methods and to correctly interpret results. The module provides the skills necessary for the planning and execution of research projects.Semester 2

Health & Social Care Systems (20 CATS)

  • This module discusses how health systems can be strengthened and covers the application of a public health approach and perspective to the assessment of the health needs of the population and planning, commissioning and delivery of high quality evidence based health and social care services and population screening programmes.

Global Non-communicable Diseases (15 CATS)

  • This module will involve students considering the non-communicable diseases (cancer, diabetes, circulatory disease and eye health) and their global importance. These conditions will be explored from the perspective of epidemiology, prevention and intervention in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs).

Maternal & Child Health in Low Resource Areas (10 CATS)

  • This module reviews maternal & child health / sexual and reproductive health (MCH/SRHR) services to include curative and preventive maternal health, ante-natal and post-natal care, delivery, immunisations, integrated management of childhood illnesses, nutrition and malnutrition, family planning, infertility, emergency obstetric care, services related to abortion/post-abortion care, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV/ AIDS.

Global Health Development (15 CATS)

  • The module will cover the development of global health policies and their influence on health development. Mechanisms for implementing global policies in less and least developed countries will be reviewed and their impact on sustainability. The political, moral and financial risks of chronic emergency aid funding will be assessed.Semester 3

Dissertation (60 CATS)

  • Students are also required to complete a dissertation project under the supervision of an academic from the Centre of Public Health. The aim is to integrate and apply global public health-related knowledge and skills gained in earlier modules. Opportunities to conduct projects in under served areas of LMICs may be arranged.
