What you will study

The course consists of 6 modules over one year, each of 6 weeks duration:

Module 1 – The adipocyte, regulation of appetite and nutrition
The module aims to develop a critical understanding of the physiology and regulation of the adipocyte, adipose tissue, human nutrition and appetite.

Module 2 – Obesity: defining obesity, epidemiology and health risks
The module aims to develop a critical understanding of the epidemiology of obesity, including the importance of the distribution of adiposity, its epidemiology, the global problems of obesity and its relationship in different populations.

Module 3 – Causation of obesity and weight gain in relation to disease and genetics
The module aims to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the medical and genetic conditions that can cause obesity and weight gain.

Module 4 – Weight Management – Diet, exercise and changing behavior
The module aims to enhance the clinical skills and knowledge required to effectively evaluate and treat obesity with emphasis on lifestyle and behavioural modifications.

Module 5 – Weight Management – Medical treatments and emerging therapies
The module aims to develop an understanding of the role of medications and emerging therapies used in weight management including pharmacovigilance and post-marketing surveillance.

Module 6 – Surgical approaches to weight management

Online Diploma in Obesity and Weight Management

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the 6 modules have the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students are split into groups of 10-15 students and are assigned a dedicated expert tutor who:

Facilitates clinical case discussions with the group.
Monitors, assesses and marks each student throughout the module.
Students use the skills gained during the lectures to engage with the different activities (see below).

MSc teaching methods for this module are similar to the PG Diploma course modules however it is run over 12 weeks.

Module 2 - Professional Project

To produce the professional project, students continue to use the online course however much of the work is self-directed.

Students are expected in the first 8 weeks to interact with their tutor on a weekly basis. Students select a specific project and submit a project summary/proposal (approximately 1500 words).

Once the proposal has been approved, the professional project (10,500 words) itself is then completed through online guidance and supervision offered by the tutor. The student and tutor will interact regularly (weekly) on the dedicated students/tutor discussion area or through any other means of communication deemed appropriate by both parties (telephone/SKYPE/email). Note of any verbal communication with the tutor is recorded on the student's journal by the student.

How will I be taught?

Our course runs on a modular basis and is delivered at Parkgate Road Campus. Sessions will involve a mixture of practical and theoretical work, relevant to the module being studied. This includes body composition assessment workshops and practical exercise capacity testing.

Each module is delivered in intensive learning blocks of typically three days (25 hours), which are followed by self-directed learning supported by experienced tutors.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is by a 4,000-word written assignment or its equivalent – e.g. poster presentation. Research projects may be laboratory or work based under the direction of an individually allocated supervisor.

This module will address the terminology and methodologies used in epidemiology and research studies, and you will learn how to interpret graphical and other statistical data such as Kaplan-Meier Curves, Forrest Plots and Meta-analyses. You will develop an understanding of the importance of evidence based practice and how to apply it within a clinical setting.

Module 2: Professional Project or Independent Prescribing Module:
- Professional Project
This modules aims to develop an ability to critically evaluate areas of professional practice of your choice and develop skills in independent research and study. You will produce a report of 12000 words which will include a project proposal of 1,500 words and the remaining 10,500 words will consist of a literature review and an evidence appraisal, clinical or organisational practice audit. It will also involve the implementation of evidence-based practice and undertaking qualitative or quantitative research. As part of the module you will be in regular contact with your tutor who will offer guidance and supervision either via email, telephone or SKYPE.

- Or Independent Prescribing Module
This module aims to prepare students, both academically and practically, for the role of independent prescribing. The module also meets the registration criteria for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Teaching and learning

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis, with each module involving approximately 200 hours of student input and approximately 36 hours of staff contact, normally delivered through three hours' teaching each week for 12 weeks. Learning methods include lectures, directed reading, workshops, seminars, practical and project work. The research project will be supervised on a one-to-one basis.

Each module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or design work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, design and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, and practical exercises.

Teaching staff are drawn primarily from the Department of Sport and Health Sciences, but will include visiting speakers from business and industry, local government, consultancies, research bodies and other universities.

The Functional Food Centre is an internationally-renowned research group consisting of visiting professors, fellows, research assistants and PhD students, who are all researching nutrition and food topics.

We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. You will benefit from being taught by a highly skilled and research-active teaching team who are world-leading in their field and have vast experience in sport, physical activity, nutrition, education, and health.

Our team of academics include Professor Jim McKenna, the Head of the Active Lifestyles Centre and Professor Paul Gately, who founded the weight management organisation MoreLife in 1999. Both have contributed to seminal government reports and guidance, including the 2007 Physical Activity Guidelines and the International Obesity Task Force and World Health Organization's report on childhood obesity, and both continue to consult to many government agencies, health organisations and corporations throughout the world.

Other staff members work closely with the likes of Leeds Rhinos, Public Health England, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and the NHS, and you will be able to engage and forge contacts with industry professionals during guest lectures.

Dr Zoe Rutherford

Principal Lecturer

"I am passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles, and helping to produce physical activity and health graduates who are knowledgeable, confident and employable with transferable skills. I help my students by putting theory into practice through my research, collaboratively and individually and through my work with professional networks."

Dr Rutherford is a Principle Lecturer in Physical Activity & Health. She joined Leeds Beckett in 2013, and completed her PhD, 'School day opportunities for promoting Moderate-to-Vigorous physical activity in primary children', at Liverpool John Moores University in 2011. A consultant and researcher in the measurement and promotion of health and physical activity, Dr Rutherford is currently working with colleagues on the impact of sedentary time on health and interventions to reduce it.

The MSc Human Nutrition builds on your experience gained from an appropriate first degree and provides options to specialise in public health nutrition or sports nutrition. In particular the aims are:
-To offer a programme of advanced study and training for a future career in public health or sports nutrition
-To advance practical experience and develop a critical and reflective approach to research and practice in nutrition
-To enable you to become effective learners and practitioners by developing cross-functional skills

In the most recent (2014-15) Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey, 100% of graduates from this course were in work or further study within six months.

More about this course

On completion of the course, you are registered with the Association of Nutrition (AfN) as an associate nutritionist, which will allow you to use ANutr after your name.

After three years of relevant experience, associate nutritionists can become registered nutritionists. You can apply under one of five specialisms from public health, sports and exercise, nutrition science, animal and food.

The course team has a wide range of expertise ranging from whole body metabolic research, epidemiology, dietary assessment and clinical research to nutrition policy. These aspects are reflected in the course.

Assessment is by a combination of coursework and examination.

Professional accreditation

The course has been accredited by AfN since 2011.

Modular structure

The MSc is a one-year full-time course, involving 30 weeks of taught modules divided into two 15-week semesters commencing in either September or February. The part-time mode follows a similar pattern over two years.

As a full-time student you will take four taught core modules and two optional taught modules.

To qualify for the MSc award you will need to carry out a Research Project and then submit a 15,000-20,000 word dissertation.

After the course

Career opportunities include employment in the food industry, research, the media and charitable organisations. Graduates are well placed to apply for research studentships with a view to completing a PhD. Career opportunities are increasing in both fields.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.
