This postgraduate professional program is designed to develop graduates to be work-ready for careers in nutrition and dietetics across practice areas including clinical dietetics, private practice, food service management, public health nutrition, sports nutrition and nutrition research. This program develops student competencies to exceed the accreditation requirements of the Dietitians Association of Australia, making graduates eligible to apply for accredited practising dietitian (APD) status within the Dietitians Association of Australia. This program is distinctive because of its emphasis on developing evidence-based practitioners that have had intensive preparation in evidence-based dietetic practice, nutrition research and international engagement. The Bond University Master of Nutrition and Dietetic Practice program uses an education model comprising a combination of lectures, workshops, case studies, field trips, simulations, internships and research. In keeping with the program philosophy of producing dietitians with a difference, the program places an emphasis on real-world experience from the first semester. Students engage in activities such as case-based learning and simulation to develop their competency as nutrition professionals.
Specialist consultant practitioners and dietitians with industry expertise provide students with insight into dietetic practice and career opportunities in the profession. Students also benefit from the extensive professional experience of nutrition and dietetic academic staff in a range of fields, including clinical dietetics, sports nutrition, the food industry, private practice and public health nutrition, as well as their national and international professional networks.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in relevant workshops offered by the Bond University Centre for Research in Evidence-Based Practice (CREBP), providing them access to highly qualified academics with international research track records, some of whom are responsible for developing global evidence-based nutrition guidelines.

Full-time – 18 months (four modules a semester plus dissertation)
Part-time – typically three years (two modules a semester plus dissertation). Part-time students attend four hours a week on campus during the day.

Students are assessed using a variety of methods: reports, presentations, book reviews and essays and for all but three assessment tasks students are able to choose a public health topic and/or population group on which to focus their work. There are no examinations.
By successfully completing this course, you may find that it makes it easier to gain promotion, or enter jobs in public health departments of primary care trusts. Previous graduates have gained roles such as teenage pregnancy coordinator, health promotion specialist and five-a-day co-ordinator. Others have joined local authorities, the voluntary sector such as Agewell, and become Sure Start managers.
A number of graduates have remained in their roles as health visitors, public health nurses or midwives, working more strategically and in more depth. Overseas students have used the qualification to work successfully in their own countries. Some people have taken the course to work towards becoming a nurse consultant.
The course also provides an excellent foundation for further academic study including PhDs.

Then this taught Master’s programme in Child Public Health is for you. Exploring the evidence base underpinning Child Public Health policy in the UK and Internationally, this course examines health issues for children (and their families) aged 0 – 11 years such as perinatal health, nutrition and immunisations. It highlights the importance of child health, not only as a concept of illness, but as affecting wider long term educational, social and emotional development.
The Child Public Health programme uses a bio-psycho-social approach to critically evaluate the multitude of factors that influence child health and the role of multi-disciplinary professionals, policy makers and government in child health promotion and governance. Overall, it will emphasise the importance of the early years upon future child and population health and consider the public health policies and interventions established to promote and enhance this.

MSc Child Public Health students will take 180 credits comprising five compulsory modules (20 credits each), one optional module (20 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).
Students wishing to exit on successful completion of 60 credits at level M can be awarded a PGCert in Child Public Health.
Students who successfully complete 120 credits at level M but do not successfully complete the Dissertation module can exit with a PGDip in Child Public Health.
The teaching team consists of staff with backgrounds in teaching, research and professional expertise in the field of child public health. The team is active in their research and have considerable experience of encouraging students to publish their research; an indicator of high quality.
Child Public Health students have access to a multi-media teaching suite; take part in interactive teaching sessions where student involvement enhances learning and practical hands-on sessions with visiting speakers.

Globally health is changing rapidly and in many countries millions of people are dying from preventable diseases. The World Health Organization calculates that two thirds of an estimated annual 56 million deaths are due to non-communicable diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung diseases.
Obesity is a key determinant of these diseases and yet, at the other extreme, over 7.5 million preschool children die each year from malnutrition. Cardiovascular diseases alone represented 30 per cent of global deaths in 2012. About three quarters of the global NCD deaths occur in low-and middle-income countries, and infectious diseases including AIDS/HIV and other immunisable diseases, still affect many people in developing and developed countries alike.
Supporting people to stay well is the essence of public health. Practitioners advise and develop programmes to make a difference in areas such as nutrition, immunisation, tobacco and alcohol, drug addiction recovery, sexual health, pregnancy and children’s health. They are also concerned with issues such as health inequality, health care service equity, population programmes and disease surveillance.

Principles and Theory of Public Health
This module will include an overview of the history of public health and current theoretical frameworks, the principles of epidemiology and health needs assessment and the importance of public health policies and the wider public health workforce in supporting the application of theory to practice.
Health Economics and Development
This module is designed to provide students with the analytical tools to understand, from an economic perspective: the nature of health care systems internationally; how to assess health care reforms and specific health intervention programmes; and frameworks of health determinants. The module is divided into three main parts; the basic economics of health care systems, evaluation of health care and economic perspectives on health determinants.
Public Health Theory to Social Action
This module will encourage students to undertake activities that will enhance their knowledge on how community development approaches aim to support communities to address health inequalities. In addition it will provide students with the skills to be able to critically analyse and evaluate the relationship between public health theory and its application to social action.
Advanced Epidemiology, Application and Evaluation in Practice
During this module students will further develop and enhance their knowledge and understanding of epidemiological approaches and their application to public health practice.
It particularly aims to develop a practical understanding of how the techniques used to undertake epidemiological studies can be used to gather and interpret knowledge which can support the planning and implementation of new social action initiatives and evaluate existing activities.
Evaluating Evidence to Develop Research and Inform Practice
This module is designed to develop students' critical and practical understanding of research methods which can be applied to inform practice. It requires students to learn about the evaluation of literature, research design along with data collection and interpretation that relates to the student's field. Students will engage with the critical appraisal of evidence from published research literature, qualitative and quantitative methodologies, structured literature reviewing, research ethics, research design, data collection and relevant data analyses.
This module is available to our campus-based students.
This module is designed to gain first-hand experience of organisations currently delivering a social determinant approach to delivering public health goals. Students spend 15 days working alongside organisation staff to experience specific aspects of Public Health policy research and practice.
Students select a relevant organisation allowing them to explore, organise and administer an educational placement in an area/organisation of their choosing in terms of specialty and/ or geographical location. The student will consider a person centred approach as well as the key strategic local, national and international imperatives. Students will take responsibility for their learning by setting personal and professional learning outcomes for their placement. The module allows students to demonstrate reflection and reasoning in relation to a specific aspect of Public Health. Longer placements are possible if attached to their chosen dissertation.
Examples of recent placements include spending time at the National Institute of Health and Social Care Excellence; Social Action for Health (a voluntary agency in the East End of London - http://www.safh.org.uk; Health Action Partnership International (a charity advocating for change at a national and global level) and the Centre for Health in Valencia, Spain.
This module requires students to undertake an independent research project, in the form of a critical literature review, on an area of interest that also contributes to the body of knowledge in their profession.
Modules are delivered via lectures, seminars, tutorials, interactive discussions, directed and self-directed study.
All modules provide opportunities for you to receive feedback on your academic work. The length and nature of assessments is dependent on module specific learning outcomes. Examples of assessment activities within the programme include written assignments on a given public health perspective, open book examinations, project plans, research proposals and a small scale research study or systematic review.
Modules will have either one larger summative assessment at the end of the module or two smaller assessments, spaced throughout the module. A Pass mark is awarded at 50% or above, and students must gain Pass marks in all modules.
