-Overseas graduates with equivalent of a nutrition degree from a non-UK institution wishing to obtain a recognised UK postgraduate qualification in nutrition

Fundamental Sport Nutrition

Covers the basics of sport nutrition, including a critical appraisal of the current thoughts with regards to carbohydrate, fat and protein requirements of athletes. The module involves traditional teaching and problem based learning.

Practical Sport Nutrition

As well as gaining professional accreditations in body composition assessment (ISAK), during this module you will be taught the key practical techniques required to work as a sport nutritionist – including diet analysis, assessment of energy expenditure, reflective practice and much more. The module will involve laboratory practicals, as well as classroom based teaching.

Research Skills

To equip you with the skills to perform an independent research project, fundamental research skills and statistical analysis are taught using practical sessions and problem based learning.

Exercise Metabolism

A comprehensive understanding of exercise metabolism is essential to fully understand sport nutrition. This module covers the basics of exercise metabolism, with the role of nutrition clearly embedded in the learning.

Supplements and Drugs in Sport

A sport nutritionist must be able to give accurate and professional advice to athletes with regards to the issues and concerns related to sports supplements. The role of WADA and UKAD will be examined, as well as how to set up safe supplement policies. At the end of the module students are encouraged to sit the free online UKAD anti-doping accreditation which is a requirement of entry onto the SENr register.

Applied Placement

All students engage in a 12 week placement provided by the university. Placements can be in high level sporting clubs such as premier league football or premiership rugby and super league rugby clubs, as well as with local sports clubs. Under mentorship from an experienced LJMU tutor, you will be guided through the process and gain hands-on experience working as a sport nutritionist.

Research Project

All students complete a research project in semester 3. This project can be individual or in small groups and can be on any topic of your choice related to sport nutrition. Some students choose to join current research projects running in the sport nutrition department whilst others prefer to fully design their own project.

Clinical case studies dissertation

Subject to satisfactory results, students progress to clinical case studies supervised by relevant clinical staff. The clinical case studies provide training in evidence based nutritional practice for health professionals. Students assess and evaluate the medical history of patients with particular reference to nutritional needs in a detailed, in depth manner, with reference to national and international guidelines, current literature and current treatment protocols. Students discuss the contribution of nutrition to the cause, progress and treatment of the disease. They reflect on clinical practice, including how treatment guidelines have been applied, and if there have been any barriers or issues which have prevented this.

This programme provides a postgraduate pathway for graduates who are interested in pursuing a career in the area of sport and exercise nutrition.

- Format and assessment -

The programme is delivered by blended learning (combined distance learning and on campus modules). Students enrolled for the PgDip Sport and Exercise Nutrition course need to undertake modules to a total of 120 credit points and for the MSc undertake an additional research project of 60 credit points. Modules studied will include: nutrition and exercise metabolism, nutritional assessment, recommendations and requirements, sport-specific nutrition issues, research design and biostatistics, nutrition for health and disease prevention, evidence-based practice in healthcare sciences, practical sports nutrition and the sport and exercise nutrition research project.

Career options

Why Study Human Nutrition with us?

As the MSc in Human Nutrition is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN), graduates of this course are entitled to direct entry to the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN). This allows graduates to use the letters ‘ANutr’ after their name.

The course will appeal to professionals within the food and nutrition industries as well as health professionals.

Our course will also be attractive to undergraduates with non-nutrition degrees who wish to move into the field of nutrition and those with nutrition-related degrees wishing further their studies to gain a postgraduate qualification.

What will I learn?

The modules will develop your underpinning scientific knowledge of nutrition as well as equipping you with the professional skills required for a career in nutrition. You will also develop your research skills during the Research Project phase of the course.

How will I be taught?

Each taught module involves attendance at a three-day intensive course (Wednesday to Friday, 9.15am to 5.00pm), followed by an eight-week period of campus- or home-based learning with interim tutorials.

You will acquire an in-depth knowledge of the relationship between diet and disease, from the molecular to the population level, and discover the nutrients required throughout each stage of the life cycle to maintain optimal health status. If you wish to gain practical experience as a Sport and Exercise Nutritionist there is an opportunity to complete an extracurricular training programme during the first few weeks of the course. If you complete the entire programme you will be eligible to apply for an internship. This could provide you with an opportunity to gain experience in sport science working under supervision with our University's sports teams, sporting partners and elite performers, whilst studying for a masters degree.

There are no option modules on this course as it is designed to facilitate preparation for accreditation with the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register. We will provide opportunities for the development of your professional skills relevant to a host of work across performance sport, physical activity, exercise and health. It will also cover the key theories of sport and exercise nutrition.

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a mix of coursework assignments, case studies, examinations, laboratory reports and presentations appropriate to the programme. Each module is assessed through the equivalent of 4,000 words.

The graduate program in Human Nutrition offers opportunities for advanced study and original investigations in basic and applied human nutrition at both the master’s and doctoral levels. The curriculum includes coursework and thesis research through laboratory or field work in a variety of areas relevant to human nutrition including nutrient metabolism, diet and disease, nutrition through the life cycle and nutrition behaviours.

Research projects also examine environmental, social, and individual determinants of food choices and eating patterns; this includes better understanding of socio-cultural effects on diet, and the impact living in “food deserts” can have on good health.

International nutrition projects in Cambodia, Zambia, Rwanda, and other countries seek to improve maternal, infant, and child nutrition.

The program is enriched through collaboration with colleagues in graduate programs such as Applied Animal Biology, Food Science, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and others.

Coursework selected in consultation with the student's supervisory committee includes graduate courses in human nutrition and from other areas relevant to each student's research.
