This programme provides an opportunity to gain in-depth understanding of the nutritional and metabolic demands of exercise, of the interactions between diet, exercise and health, and of how nutrition influences sports performance.

The programme is designed to provide graduates with training in sport and exercise nutrition which will equip them for future careers in research, teaching in higher education, in industry, or in applied sports nutrition support. It is not a substitute for a dietetic qualification.

This programme is available for part-time applicants who have a pre-arranged, confirmed placement (eg with the Loughborough University Sports Development Centre, Sport National Governing Body, English Institute of Sport etc).

Teaching and learning

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis, with each module requiring approximately 36 hours of staff contact time and 200 hours of total student input in each 12-week semester.

The main theme of the teaching and learning aspect of this MSc is to encourage you to develop the necessary skills to understand and communicate advanced theoretical and research-based knowledge of nutrition to people who participate in sport and exercise. Learning methods reflect the wide variety of topics associated with applied sport and exercise nutrition and include lectures, directed reading, workshops, seminars, practical exercises, laboratory sessions and project work. The research project will be supervised on a one-to-one basis.

Student performance in each module is usually assessed by evaluation of the quality of written or design work, and verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project case work, design and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, and practical exercises.

Careers

Many sports are becoming increasingly professional in their approach to training and nutrition. For example, many sports clubs now employ full-time nutrition consultants. Career prospects outside sport are perhaps even more exciting. The NHS offers an increasing number of opportunities for students with specialist training in exercise nutrition to support GP referral schemes and other healthy living programmes. The growing awareness of health within society, coupled with misunderstandings about the relationships between physical activity, nutrition and health has led to an increasing demand for graduates who can deliver evidence-based solutions and advice at all levels. Research or teaching within further or higher education also provide potential career opportunities.

Graduates progress to a diverse range of careers including exercise and lifestyle consultants based within hospitals and private practice. Various graduates have secured full time and part time work with professional sports teams as well as the Institutes of Sport in the UK. Graduates also progress to work in major international companies such as GlaxoSmithKline or are employed as industry consultants, dieticians and nutrition counsellors. Graduates have also successfully gained funded PhD positions.

If you are already working, or you intend to work, in the field of sport and exercise nutrition this course will provide the opportunity to upgrade your academic and professional skills, expertise and knowledge.

If you wish to gain practical experience as a Sport and Exercise Nutritionist there is an opportunity to complete an extracurricular training programme during the first few weeks of the course. If you complete the entire programme you will be eligible to apply for an internship. This could provide you with an opportunity to gain experience in sport science working under supervision with our University's sports teams, sporting partners and elite performers, whilst studying for a masters degree.

There are no option modules on this course as it is designed to facilitate preparation for accreditation with the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register. We will provide opportunities for the development of your professional skills relevant to a host of work across performance sport, physical activity, exercise and health. It will also cover the key theories of sport and exercise nutrition.

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a mix of coursework assignments, case studies, examinations, laboratory reports and presentations appropriate to the programme. Each module is assessed through the equivalent of 4,000 words.

Measurement & Evaluation in Sport & Exercise Nutrition (20 credits)
You will gain knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of measurement and evaluation tools and techniques in sport and exercise nutrition. This module will also enable you to develop a personal CPD plan and critically reflect on the process of measurement and evaluation in sport and exercise nutrition.

Ergogenic Practices & Nutritional Manipulation in Sport & Exercise (20 credits)
On completion you will be able to use contemporary research to explore the complex interactions and relationships between dietary manipulation strategies and specific ergogenic aids/food supplements on metabolism, sports performance and health.

Physiology & Biochemistry for Performance (20 credits)
You will develop a critical understanding of the metabolic and endocrine responses to different types of exercise, their time course and scope for training and detraining adaptations. It will also facilitate the development of laboratory data collection skills.

Research & Professional Practice (20 credits)
This module will equip you with an understanding of the skills and experience necessary to operate as a sport and exercise scientist in a range of professional settings.

Research Methods (20 credits)
This module focuses on the design of research projects as a way of answering questions and solving 'real world' problems in a reliable and valid manner.

Major Independent Study (60 credits)

Course details

This MSc in Human Nutrition will be delivered on a one year full-time basis. Core modules in the science of food, nutrition and human health will underpin an advanced understanding of links between diet and health at the individual, population and strategic level. Nutritional epidemiology will be studied to inform the practice of public health nutrition and how key issues in population health may be addressed. Key and topical issues in sports nutrition will be studied and applied to real world situations. Research modules will provide you with key research skills to design and carry out high quality nutrition research under supervision. You will have the opportunity to study all the theoretical and practical areas necessary for gaining accredited status with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

You will engage in practical application of Sport and Exercise Science in individual and team sport settings and in performance and health related settings.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

For those students who wish to further develop their academic skills the Masters programme includes rigorous independent research in the area. It will also provide students with continued professional development and facilitate their personal career development. The proposed provision has been mapped against the requirements for individual accreditation by the British Association for Sport and exercise Sciences (BASES) including practical ability in laboratory techniques, reflective practice, theoretical basis of the physiology and psychology of sports and exercise, and completion of an in-depth research study in the area of sport and exercise science. It will, therefore, be excellent preparation for students who want to undertake these professional qualifications.

To achieve the award of an MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Science you will also receive research methods training and then undertake a mandatory research project.
