The 2-year MSc in Nursing (Mental Health) is open to applicants who have already completed an honours degree and have a minimum of 750 hours’ experience in a healthcare setting in the last year.
The curriculum for the MSc in Nursing is designed to meet the needs of the changing demography in the wider population and the emerging health needs. A range of teaching and learning strategies are implemented to engage the learner including simulation, practice learning, lectures, skills rehearsals, and online digital learning resources.
Practice based learning is central to the students’ development, and Nursing (Mental Health) students will spend 40 weeks of their course on placement. Here they will gain experience in a diverse range of nursing settings, including community, nursing homes, and hospitals.
The Nursing (Mental Health) programme has been designed to develop the students’ personal and professional attributes, knowledge and skills required of a newly registered nurse.
The Nursing (Mental Health) course does not follow the usual University term times. The academic year starts in early September and ends late the following August.
50% of the teaching for Nursing students will take place in healthcare placements, and the other 50% will be taught at university.
The MSc Nursing (Mental Health) is made up of five modules:

Teaching is based on a social model and Nursing (Mental Health) students will be taught to appreciate healthcare and the well- being of the patient in the wider context. A range of teaching methods will be adopted in order to provide a stimulating learning environment. These will include; lectures, guided reading, seminars, discussion groups, scenarios, distance learning, practical sessions, simulated practice and Enquiry Based Learning.
Assessments will enable Nursing (Mental Health) students to develop creative, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Students will learn how to deal with real-life situations in the form of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), poster presentations and will even write a journal article ready for publication.
There are no tuition fees to pay for the MSc Nursing (Mental Health) for UK / EU students.
To be eligible for WEDS funding international students must have residency for 3 years (working and living) in the United Kingdom. EU area students can also apply. Standard fees apply for international students.

This pre-registration nursing programme prepares Master entry-level Registered Nurses. The admitted students are Bachelor's degree holders in any discipline. The programme prepares students for registration with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong as Registered Nurses and to acquire the attributes to become future leaders in the profession.

This programme is for registered nurses or midwives who wish to gain registration on Part 3 of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register, as a specialist community public health nurse (School Nurse) and be recorded as a community prescriber. It offers you the opportunity to gain registration as a school nurse, community prescriber and for academic development at master’s level.
You develop public health practice knowledge and skills in addressing health inequalities with individuals and communities along with public health leadership skills, to enable you to contribute to the new school nursing agenda.
You study evidence based practice and the factors which impact on the health and well-being of children, young people and their families; protection and safeguarding standards for children and young people; the new school nursing agenda; public health, personal leadership philosophies and behaviours and their application within organisational settings; public health nursing practice, legal and ethical dimensions. Prescribing from the community practitioners’ formulary, and designing and managing a service evaluation.

Where you study
The programme comprises 50% theory and 50% practice within an integrated approach. Practice based learning – you are allocated a practice teacher by your sponsoring organisation who facilitates your learning in practice and is responsible for the assessment of your competence in practice.
How you learn
Teaching methods include lecturers, seminars, experiential learning, scenarios, problem based learning, case study work, simulations, action learning sets, and peer led seminars and discussions.
Learning in practice is supported with the development of a practice progress file, which includes self-assessment activities, learning contracts, learning logs, reflective dialogue and discussion with practice teachers, mentors and academic staff.
How you are assessed
Assessments include examinations, a defended poster, essays, case study analysis, research proposal and simulations. Practice is assessed via the practice progress file through the mechanism of the tripartite meetings which include you, your practice teacher and your academic mentor.
Following successful completion of the required theoretical learning outcomes (120 credits at master’s level) and the specialist community public health nursing practice competencies (NMC 2004) you are eligible to register as a specialist community public health nurse (school nurse), be recorded as a community prescriber on the NMC register and eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing).
Following completion of the PgDip in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing) an opportunity will be available to continue your studies and complete a 60 credit master’s level dissertation module leading to an MSC Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing). This is undertaken as one year part-time or six months full time study after SCPHN (SN) registration with the NMC. It must be completed within five years of commencing the PgDip.
The course prepares you to work as a school nurse and to take practice forward to meet the challenges of a dynamic school nursing profession.
The Post-Graduate Diploma Specialist Nursing (with pathways) is aimed at preparing Nurses for Leadership roles in a field of Nursing of their choice. There are a range of Pathways to suit all Nurses including District Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Learning Disability Nursing, and Community Children’s Nursing. The full range of Adult Nursing Specialisms include, Palliative Care, Stroke Care, Diabetes Care and Emergency Care.
The programme leads to more than one qualification. You will obtain a degree from Ulster University and a professional qualification from the United Kingdom Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Students of District Nursing also obtain a further professional qualification in Nurse Prescribing.
The term, ‘Specialist Nursing’ refers to, the exercising of higher levels of judgment and decision-making in relation to the nursing care of individuals, families and communities. As a future Leader you must display this higher level of decision-making across four areas; clinical practice, care and programme management, clinical practice development and clinical practice leadership.
At Ulster we focus on developing you as a Leader and help you achieve academic and professional competence in all these areas. This programme is a 50-50 programme, meaning that 50% of the programme is university-based and 50% based in the practice learning setting. In the Practice Learning setting you will be allocated to a Sign-Off Mentor. This Sign-Off Mentor who is an established Specialist Nurse and Leader in Clinical Care will supervise you throughout the Programme. He/she will assess you and sign off your competencies prior to recording the professional qualification with the NMC. You will also be allocated to a Pathway Leader who will supervise your academic development and provide support throughout.
The academic component of the programme consists of a four 30-credit modules.
District Nursing students have an additional 20 credits to complete in order to evidence outcomes related to Nurse Prescribing.
Full-time students are expected to attend the University for at least 2 days per week, with the remaining time allocated to Practice Learning. Full-time students are normally time-tabled for Mondays and Fridays.
Part-time students attend the University for 1 day per week during Term-Time. In Semester One this is normally a Monday and in Semester Two a Wednesday. Some Pathways have additional days ( i.e Emergency Care) but you will be informed of this at Induction. Practice Learning is organised on days that suit you and your Sign-off Mentor.
All students are expected to attend all classes associated with the programme and be punctual and regular in attendance. Attendance will be monitored both at the University and in the Practice Learning setting and Employers are informed of all absences.

All students must complete 75 days Practice Learning in an aproved setting. Students must have direct interaction with patients and families during this period. Supervision by an expert Specialist Nurse (Sign-Off Mentor) will occur during Practice Learning. A Specialist Practice Qualification (SPQ) Portfolio is required to evidence achievement of professional outcomes.
Graduates of this programme take up posts as Specialist Nurses. Most are in Team Leadership positions. There is 100% Employability associated with this programme.
This course aims to develop you as safe, competent and professional a Specialist Community Public Health Nursing practitioner, fit for practice in the designated field of school nursing. On successful completion of the course, you will be able to register on the third part of the Nursing and Midwifery register as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse School Nursing.

You are normally seconded or sponsored by a an NHS Trust or equivalent to study for this pathway. You will focus on educational issues that are related to school nursing, public health and primary healthcare. The course is 50 % theory and 50% practice and so learning experiences also take place in a community setting. The programme steers strongly towards public health and health promotion, and is designed to encourage the empowerment of patients/clients. The theoretical modules are underpinned with evidence based practice and application to practice is highlighted throughout. Other key aspects of the course are interprofessional working, leadership and management and innovation.
The course will involve both assessments in theory and practical elements. Your theoretical assessments involve measuring academic knowledge at masters level which will underpin your professional practice. Practice assessments are aimed at measuring knowledge, skills, expertise and attitudes to ensure that an appropriate theory/practice balance is achieved.
Students accessing this course are from a wide range of areas from within the West Midlands area. Networking between students is encouraged and the extensive support offered to students is considered to be a strength of the course as evidenced in previous student course evaluations. Students are also visited individually in practice by a member of the course team to provide additional support.
The school nursing award has a designated full time member of staff who acts as course leader and who has expertise in the specific field of practice that the student is studying and as well as having experience of working as a practitioner in the same specialist area. In addition the award, course leader and course team have engaged in research, published books, chapters and journal articles within school nursing and public health and are members of national professional groups and forums.
Innovation on the course is strongly encouraged and several school nursing students have gone on to win regional and national awards for work initiated on the course.
Students will be required to undertake fifteen days alternative public health experience in order to enable them to experience the breadth of public health services available. In addition students will have the opportunity to undertake the V100 Nurse Prescribing qualification as part of the award. On successful completion of the Post Graduate Diploma students are able to continue (subject to funding) and undertake a dissertation to complete a Masters in Primary Care.
There is also an active practice teacher support network forum and practice teachers are provided with an annual update each year along with other professional development opportunities.
You will by the end of the course be able to apply to the third part of the NMC register to practice as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse / School Nurse.
