You will also begin to develop academic and research skills.

Year 2 to builds on the work undertaken previously, but also introduces factors which influence health and well-being such as global and national public health priorities. You will explore the impact of altered health status on the individual and their family/carers over the life span. In addition, you will acquire deeper understanding of inter-professional healthcare delivery which includes looking at aspects of co-production, individuals’ rights and inclusion.

Year 3 builds and consolidates your knowledge within your specific field of nursing. Here you will looks more specifically at complex health care needs, health care delivery, interventions, governance, leadership and decision-making. You will undertake a literature review which provides opportunities to build upon your prior learning and experience in an area of interest to you.

We offer post graduate pre-registration nursing in two fields of nursing (adult and mental health) and have excellent links with the NHS and other care providers. Read more
We offer post graduate pre-registration nursing in two fields of nursing (adult and mental health) and have excellent links with the NHS and other care providers. Nursing skills are taught and assessed in four laboratories. Learning clinical skills in the laboratories ensures that students develop competence in a safe, protected environment. In order to develop multi-professional and collaborative working, there is shared learning between nursing and midwifery students in areas such as biological and social sciences, informatics, research, ethics, health policy and management.

This programme offers both practice and theoretical learning in a variety of institutional and community settings. For adult nursing, placements are in hospitals and the local community, such as GP practices and with community nurses and health visitors. Mental health nursing placements are much more community-focused, in clinics, forensic services and health centres.

Applications for these programmes should be made via UCAS. Please note that this programme is not available to international students.

- To develop the personal and professional skills needed to competently undertake the role and responsibilities of a registered nurse

Children's nurses provide care for children and young people from birth to 18 years of age across settings, for example hospital, home and hospice. The role of the children's nurse includes promoting health and minimising illness in collaboration with families. When providing nursing care for children, working with the family and consideration of their needs is essential. Moreover, children's nurses work collaboratively with a range of professionals to meet the specific needs of children, young people and their families wherever they are cared for.

What will you study?

The first year is divided into two parts. In part one you will undertake a bridging module introducing you to the foundations of nursing and healthcare. In part two you will look at the context of nursing within a variety of client groups within your specific field of nursing. General nursing topics are studied alongside subjects tailored to adult nursing.

While this Bridging to University Nursing – Flexible program features the same curriculum as the full-time Bridging to University Nursing program, it offers a fall and winter intake. The fall intake, however, does not run during the summer. The winter intake runs three consecutive semesters.

Dissertation (Year 3)

The programme is delivered fully online using a range of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, tutorials, work-based learning and project work. You will have the flexibility to tailor the subject of many of your assessments and final dissertation to disciplines or specialisms that are relevant and of interest to you and/or your future career.

The online and part-time nature of this programme, and the flexibility this route offers, makes it ideally suited to individuals in full-time employment.

Core Courses:

Introduction to research and evidence based veterinary nursing

This course will introduce students to the concepts of theoretical and practical research. It will cover what research is and why it is carried out, the basic elements of the research process, different types of research (quantitative and qualitative) using relevant examples from veterinary nursing/medicine. Following on from this, students will be shown how to access research, how to find and evaluate evidence, carry out literature searches, utilise evidence in their own writing / studying and how to develop their own research questions.

Clinical governance in veterinary medicine

This course will enable veterinary nurses to learn from an industry expert to develop their knowledge of the key concepts underlying clinical governance in veterinary practice. Students will learn skills than can be directly applied to practice including how to perform audits and monitor performance and outcomes in their own clinical environments and how these skills can be applied if their practice undergoes accreditation or awards assessment.

Developing evidence informed practice through independent learning

This course enables veterinary nurses to learn theoretical frameworks of reflection and develop practical skills in personal reflection. Such skills allow the student to identify any deficits in an area of individual interest or specialism, which can then be addressed through independent learning using evidence informed practice.

Optional Courses:

Promoting best practice in veterinary nursing

This course allows students to develop best practice in a particular area of interest or specialism through independent learning by reviewing and assimilating the appropriate literature, which will then be disseminated to others using written and verbal techniques. This course will develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the different techniques that can be utilised to disseminate best practice. They will also learn skills in how to disseminate best practice such as writing for journal publications and delivering oral presentations.

Animal and veterinary ethics

This course will enable students to develop their knowledge of key concepts underlying animal and veterinary ethics. Participants will also improve their ethical reasoning skills by learning to utilise a logical approach to decision making when faced with ethical dilemmas.

Introduction to teaching and assessment in veterinary nursing

This course aims to provide veterinary nurses with the knowledge and skills to create an effective learning environment for individuals within the veterinary nursing profession. Students will analyse strategic learning theories and models of teaching in order to synthesise knowledge and adapt one's own teaching practice. The course will cover delivery of teaching, evaluation of competencies, and self-reflection allowing for research to be utilised and adapted to create a teaching, learning and assessment plan. Individuals will also cover key transferable skills which will influence teaching practice. A proportion of the course will focus on the teaching and assessment of clinical skills, and how it can be practically implemented and utilised within one’s own practice, and in an academic environment.

Introduction to statistical methods

This course assumes no prior knowledge of statistics. It covers graphical and numerical methods of displaying and summarising data along with the use and interpretation of confidence intervals, significance tests (t tests, chi-square tests, etc.), correlation and linear regression. Students get hands on experience of using appropriate statistical software to carry out these analyses.

Introduction to veterinary business studies

This course will enable students to develop their knowledge of core business concepts and how they apply to the veterinary industry. Participants will learn skills that can be utilised in practice from a variety of areas, including business strategy, marketing, finance and human resources.

The Master of Nursing program has been designed to meet the needs of degree-holders who are regulated members in good standing in a Canadian jurisdiction on the Registered Nurse, Psychiatric Nurse, Graduate Nursing Practitioner, or Nurse Practitioner Register. Potential students may be working in a variety of roles and wish to increase their education to further their employment options. We anticipate that our graduates will become employed in nursing education or a variety of other roles within the health care delivery system.

Blended delivery will provide access to the program for those who may be located outside of Lethbridge. Courses will be completed online, however, twice per semester students will meet face to face with instructors, advisors, and fellow students. Students will have the option to complete a thesis or project. The program may be completed full- or part-time.

Full-Time Project Option

The project route is for students who want to make a significant contribution to a nursing practice setting via activity other than a research project. A project involves the application of a variety of nursing evidence into a deliverable that can be readily utilized by nurses or clients in a practice setting. The course NURS 5130: Practice Experience may stimulate possible project ideas. The project will not entail collection of data from individuals and will not require ethics review. There are many possible formats for a scholarly project.

Full-Time Thesis Option

The thesis route is for students who wish to do research and is the preferred route for students who may plan to engage in doctoral studies in the future. A thesis begins with the posing of a question and requires in-depth review of the literature, application of clearly described methodology for answering the research question, ethics approval, data collection, description of the results of the work, a synthesis of the research findings with current literature, and implication of the research for both theory and practice. Students should be aware that a thesis requires a large investment in time and energy.

Teaching

We use a range of assessment strategies depend on the module. Examples include presentations, assignments, vivas and objective structured clinical examinations.

This programme uses e-learning as a key resource to enhance your learning and support. You use the virtual learning environment, [email protected] for all the modules. We provide links to other useful online resources and web-based interactive activities related to autism. You also learn through discussion boards as well as attending keynote lectures, seminars, case study and scenario-based discussions. There is a virtual ethics committee group to enhance your learning on the second-year core module. We use debate and argument to stimulate you as active participants in your reflective and learning process. Because the programme allows you to select option modules, the different modules use resources appropriate to the topic of study. This is a time of great interest in medical ethics and law. Huge questions are raised by advances in fields such as genetics and assisted reproduction. In a changing moral climate, debates about conflicts between mother and fetus, or about physician-assisted suicide, are very much alive. There are challenging questions about psychiatry, about the allocation of scarce medical resources, about the boundaries of the market in medicine, and about the law and ethics of medical research. The programme aims to study the methods of reasoning and analysis in ethics and law, and to examine selected areas of health care and medical pratice from these perspectives. To study the methods of reasoning and analysis in ethics and law; to examine selected areas of health care and medical practice from a further perspective of medical ethics and law; to assist those involved in teaching or intending to teach in these areas.

- Course format and assessment -

Full-time students are required to complete the programme over one academic year and to write the examinations for each module in January or May of that year. Coursework will be required for some modules and Dissertations are due by late August the same year. Part-time students are required to complete the programme over two academic years, with Dissertations due by late August of the second/final year of study.

Career prospects

Enhancement of existing career; more specialised area of law; personal development. Many alumni go on to work in policy-related positions including positions at the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the Human Tissue Authority, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics and the Department of Health. We also have a number of alumni who have worked or are working in the BMA Ethics Department, for the GMC, Progress Educational Trust, the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, the King's Fund, and medical defence societies. A number of alumni are teaching ethics and/or law in medical schools. Students who go on to doctoral-level study also find academic positions in law schools and research centres.

This degree meets the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for community nursing specialist practice. District nursing is an exciting, challenging, varied and rewarding role; a specialism providing care and support to patients living in the community. This course is focused towards inspiring, innovating and implementing improvements in the quality of specialist district nursing care. Community healthcare is undergoing rapid and immense change following structural changes and reorganisation within NHS Wales. Policy driven by changes in demography, technology and economics have set community nursing as the future.

District nursing means working collaboratively with patients, family, carers, other community nurses, health professionals and individuals from both statutory and voluntary organisations. The degree will focus towards enhancement of your leadership skills. It requires engagement in reflective inquiry, self-awareness, assertiveness and critical thinking skills. Excellence in case load management is also fostered.

Delivery of care includes assessment, diagnosis, prescribing, follow up and discharge for a diverse range of patients including those with acute conditions, highly complex care needs, long term health conditions, safe guarding needs, requiring wound management health promotion, palliative and end of life care.

Learning and teaching methods

Teaching and learning methods include lectures, tutorials, self-directed study, workshops and a clinical placement. As part of the course you will complete 40 academic days which run from September to May.

Year one requires attendance every Tuesday. In your second year lectures will be delivered on various days depending on which modules you choose. In addition you will undertake 40 clinical days per year. Ideally you should be working in a community setting, however if you are not, placements may be negotiated. While in practice, you will be assigned a mentor who will assess your clinical competence. All students are required to organise a tripartite meeting between student, mentor and academic supervisor during the first month in order to set objectives for clinical learning.

If you have undertaken the Fundamentals of Community Practice Module (30 credits) within the last five years, this can be transferred to the degree.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Undertaking this course ensures you will graduate with the knowledge, skills, competencies and capacity to provide safe and effective nursing care in community settings. Additionally, having employees with a specialist practitioner qualification is valued by nursing managers, commissioners and the Welsh Government.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed by a range of methods including writing essays and case studies, formal presentations, poster presentations, examinations, dissertation, literature reviews and clinical practice assessments.

As part of the Decision Making module you will use the Hydra Suite which is used to help analyse and improve decision making for a variety of scenarios faced by professionals within district nursing.

Theory

During your studies you will learn alongside students on other nursing programmes. You will be taught via lectures, seminars and co-operative learning groups. Modules you will study include: Principles of professional identity; Knowledge and skills for nursing practice; Patient and client experience and contemporary nursing practice; Safety and risk in adult nursing care; Evidence-based practice and the nurse-patient or client relationship; Caring for the individual with long term conditions; Individual and public health policy; Supporting the individual with acute and complex adult care needs; Ethics and philosophy for nursing.

Practice

Practice experiences will take place across the beautiful North Yorkshire Region offering you experiences of delivering care with diverse communities in a range of health and social care environments. You will begin your practical experience three months into the programme. You are required to undertake a total of four periods of assessed practice over the two years.

The Department of Health Sciences has adopted a base and spoke model of practice experience to ensure your practice experience focusses on the learning outcomes you need to achieve. You will be allocated to a base practice experience area, which may be a day unit, clinic, community nursing team or hospital ward. From there, through negotiation, you will access spoke areas which will support and supplement your learning. This will provide you with some flexibility to follow the journeys of patients, clients, service users and carers.

Support

The programme is designed to ensure that you are well supported throughout the two years. In practice you have access to nurse mentors and link lecturers who will help to ensure you maximize your opportunities for learning. In theory you are allocated personal supervisors who will provide you with support for your academic work. Additionally Student Services acts as a first point of contact if you need information or assistance with a problem.

MSc in Nursing Practice

After successfully completing the Postgraduate Diploma with Professional Registration (Adult) you may, at a later stage, top up your qualification to an MSc in Nursing Practice through the RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) route by undertaking a 60 credit Service Improvement Project. If you do decide to top up to the MSc, the fees for this additional element of study will need to be paid either by you or your employer.
