NO TUITION FEES to pay for UK and EU students - our NHS bursary is available to Nursing programme applicants who have lived in UK for last 3-years. To receive funding from the NHS Wales Bursary Scheme, students will have to commit to working in Wales for 2 years following the completion of their Nursing (Adult) course.

MSc Nursing (Child) Course Structure

The 2-year MSc in Nursing (Child) is open to applicants who have already completed an honours degree and have a minimum of 750 hours’ experience in a healthcare setting in the last year.

The curriculum for the MSc in Nursing is designed to meet the needs of the changing demography in the wider population and the emerging health needs. A range of teaching and learning strategies are implemented to engage the learner including simulation, practice learning, lectures, skills rehearsals, and online digital learning resources.

Practice based learning is central to the students’ development, and Nursing (Child) students will spend 40 weeks of their course on placement. Here they will gain experience in a diverse range of nursing settings, including community, nursing homes, and hospitals.

The Nursing (Child) programme has been designed to develop the students’ personal and professional attributes, knowledge and skills required of a newly registered nurse.

The Nursing (Child) course does not follow the usual University term times. The academic year starts in early September and ends late the following August. 

50% of the teaching for Nursing students will take place in healthcare placements, and the other 50% will be taught at university.

The MSc Nursing (Child) is made up of five modules:

Year 1:

Module 1 – Introduction to Nursing

Module 2 - Living with Long-term and Chronic Conditions

Year 2

Module 3 – Managing Complex Care in Deteriorating Situations

Module 4 – Leadership & Decision-making

Module 5 – Dissertation

Teaching is based on a social model and Nursing (Child) students will be taught to appreciate healthcare and the well- being of the patient in the wider context. A range of teaching methods will be adopted in order to provide a stimulating learning environment. These will include; lectures, guided reading, seminars, discussion groups, scenarios, distance learning, practical sessions, simulated practice and Enquiry Based Learning.

Assessments will enable Nursing (Child) students to develop creative, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Nursing (Child) students will learn how to deal with real-life situations in the form of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), poster presentations and will even write a journal article ready for publication.

Fees and Funding for Nursing (Child) Course

There are no tuition fees to pay for the MSc Nursing (Child) for UK / EU students.

To be eligible for WEDS funding international students must have residency for 3 years (working and living) in the United Kingdom. EU area students can also apply. Standard fees apply for international students.

Careers in Nursing (Child)

Child Nursing graduates care for children and young people in hospitals in their own home, special schools, and children’s centres.

There is increasing nursing field specialisation as the programme progresses which keeps you abreast of the current developments within your chosen field of nursing. In addition, you will acquire deeper understanding of inter-professional healthcare delivery which includes looking at aspects of co-production, individuals’ rights and inclusion.

Year 3 builds and consolidates your knowledge within your specific field of nursing. Here you will looks more specifically at complex health care needs, health care delivery, interventions, governance, leadership and decision-making. You will undertake a literature review which provides opportunities to build upon your prior learning and experience in an area of interest to you.

Our Child Nursing course provides students with an opportunity to gain an Integrated MNurs/Registered Nurse qualification and acts as preparation both for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and for taking on the responsibilities and accountability involved. Our Child Nursing course provides students with an opportunity to gain an Integrated MNurs/Registered Nurse qualification and acts as preparation both for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and for taking on the responsibilities and accountability involved. It aims to provide graduates holding a health-related degree the opportunity to study at Level 7 – the theory that underpins nursing practice and develops knowledge and skills through evidence-based learning. Practice experience is gained in both hospital and community settings. On successful completion of this course students will be able to enter Part one (Child) of the Register held by the NMC.

The Child Nursing course will prepare students to be safe, effective and caring practitioners who are ready to work with children, young people and their families with a variety of care needs in a range of settings from home to hospital. In addition, the development of the children’s nursing modules has been informed by key guidance and the contemporary issues challenging the profession and service, such as the recognition of the sick child, safeguarding of children, transition into adult care, involvement of children, young people and their parents in service development (RCPCH 2010), promotion of mental health and psychological wellbeing (DOH 2006), withholding and withdrawal of life sustaining treatment (RCPCH 2004) and standards for the development of “young people friendly” services (DOH 2011).

Continuing changes to children and young people’s health services require nurses who can adapt to new ways of working whilst being able to uphold and assure high quality nursing care for the children, young people and families in their care. A key aim, therefore, is to equip children’s nursing students to thrive in such changing environments and to understand the many factors that influence service provision.

Children’s nursing students are encouraged to be passionate, assertive and creative in working collaboratively with other professionals and families in the pursuit of excellent and innovative care for all children, young people and their families.

Course structure

The framework for the MNurs Award has been specifically designed to permit Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) as described by the NMC with a view to preparing students who are already graduates and/or who have relevant clinical experience for registration. APL / APEL will involve students making a written submission to detail how the requirements of the course have been met through prior study as well as providing evidence of relevant practice experience in a health care support worker role.

The course involves continuous assessment of both theory and practice. A variety of assessment methods are used including practical examinations, case studies, essays, written examinations and presentations. Students are also assessed against the NMC’s competencies for registration during a series of practice placements in hospital and the community.

The MNurs course prepares successful students for a career as a registered nurse in the relevant field of practice. Newly qualified nurses can apply for posts within a hospital or community setting. The MNurs course may also enable individuals to develop a clinical research career within the NHS.

In line with the principles and values which underpin the NHS constitution, the University expects all students undertaking programmes which lead to registration as a health professional to demonstrate the NHS values.

98% of students go on to work or further study within six months of graduation (Unistats, 2014).

This pre-registration nursing programme prepares Master entry-level Registered Nurses. The admitted students are Bachelor's degree holders in any discipline. The programme prepares students for registration with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong as Registered Nurses and to acquire the attributes to become future leaders in the profession.

Programme Structure

This programme embraces all of the theoretical components required for registration with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong. The Masters in Nursing (MN) enables you to achieve a post-graduate qualification and professional registration. The MN underpins all aspects of nursing practice and leads to eligibility for registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Council professional register in one of the four fields: Adult Health /Child Health /Mental Health /Learning Disability.

It is a full-time, three year, post-graduate degree course which aims to provide you with a range of learning, teaching and assessment experiences that will enable you to become a critically reflective, post-graduate nurse with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of your respective field of nursing.

Throughout this programme you will be in University studying theory (50%) and then have the opportunity to engage in clinical-based learning (50%) in a variety of hospital and community settings within the Lothian and Borders area. What you'll learn

Nurses today need to be able to demonstrate competence in nursing care across the patient’s lifespan. To deliver this, they need to be able to work flexibly, inter-professionally and collaboratively in a dynamic and ever changing health care arena.
Our nursing programme has been written to take account of the key drivers in health care at local, national and international levels and was developed in partnership with our clinical partners, students, service users and carers.

During each year of the programme you will learn alongside colleagues in all fields of nursing, and will work with peers from the MN and the undergraduate nursing programme. The course is designed so that you will acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding which gives you specific skills, knowledge and competences to work within a variety of health-care settings. There is increasing nursing field specialisation as the programme progresses which keeps you abreast of the current developments within your chosen field of nursing. On completion, this course will support you to become a creative, innovated and dynamic nurse with an excellent grounding in nursing theory and practice.

Year 1 lays the foundations about what the role of the nurse is and introduces you to the Nursing and Midwifery code as well as theories and models of nursing and nursing skills. It also focuses on anatomy and physiology, determinants of health across the life span, communication, compassionate care, and ethics and inter-professional working. You will also begin to develop academic and research skills.

Year 2 to builds on the work undertaken previously, but also introduces factors which influence health and well-being such as global and national public health priorities. You will explore the impact of altered health status on the individual and their family/carers over the life span. In addition, you will acquire deeper understanding of inter-professional healthcare delivery which includes looking at aspects of co-production, individuals’ rights and inclusion.

Year 3 builds and consolidates your knowledge within your specific field of nursing. Here you will looks more specifically at complex health care needs, health care delivery, interventions, governance, leadership and decision-making. You will undertake a literature review which provides opportunities to build upon your prior learning and experience in an area of interest to you.

You can train to be a fully qualified children's nurse in two years if you have already completed an honours degree, preferably in a health-related subject. After completing the course, you are able to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a qualified nurse.

Practice-based learning is central to your development and you spend 45 weeks of your course on placement. You gain experience in a diverse range of practice settings in your chosen area of nursing, such as caring for acutely ill children in hospitals and their own homes.

Placements are across South Yorkshire and the Humber, in some of the UK’s leading healthcare providers. On your placements, you are assigned a qualified and experienced children's nurse as a mentor. They support you and make sure you are comfortable in your surroundings, so you make the most of the experience.

You care for children up to sixteen years of age.This is centred around the child and their family, and can be in the home or in hospital.

You also gain insight into other fields of nursing during the course.

We provide modern facilities to help you develop clinical skills and specialist knowledge for your career. Simulated Practice

This allows you to become familiar with the needs of local communities and its healthcare providers. Clinical placements are a vital factor in promoting understanding and development of professional knowledge and skills.

Academic facilities

Modules

This course is based on the theory of relationship centred care and the psychological, social and biological factors influencing health. These themes are explored in the context of acute and long-term care and later in the course there is an emphasis on leading and managing in professional practice. The course has three parts with two progression points which must be successfully completed in order to progress to the next part. The modular structure of the programme is developmental and students study at HE level 7 throughout the programme and are expected to demonstrate increasing levels of self-directed independent study as the programme progresses.

Student independent learning time varies during the programme and is focused more in the theory modules and averages between 30-50 hours a week.

Compulsory modules
Part One of the course is 26 weeks and focuses on the Foundations in Health and Nursing. This part includes the following modules:
-HSM001 Relationship Centred Care and Concepts of Biology for Health (Theory)
-HSM101 Engaging in Practice 1 (Practice)

Part Two is 37 weeks and focuses on acute and long term care. This part includes the following modules:

We offer post graduate pre-registration nursing in two fields of nursing (adult and mental health) and have excellent links with the NHS and other care providers. Nursing skills are taught and assessed in four laboratories. Learning clinical skills in the laboratories ensures that students develop competence in a safe, protected environment. In order to develop multi-professional and collaborative working, there is shared learning between nursing and midwifery students in areas such as biological and social sciences, informatics, research, ethics, health policy and management.

This programme offers both practice and theoretical learning in a variety of institutional and community settings. For adult nursing, placements are in hospitals and the local community, such as GP practices and with community nurses and health visitors. Mental health nursing placements are much more community-focused, in clinics, forensic services and health centres.

The Post-Graduate Diploma Specialist Nursing (with pathways) is aimed at preparing Nurses for Leadership roles in a field of Nursing of their choice. There are a range of Pathways to suit all Nurses including District Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Learning Disability Nursing, and Community Children’s Nursing. The full range of Adult Nursing Specialisms include, Palliative Care, Stroke Care, Diabetes Care and Emergency Care.

The programme leads to more than one qualification. You will obtain a degree from Ulster University and a professional qualification from the United Kingdom Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Students of District Nursing also obtain a further professional qualification in Nurse Prescribing.

About

The term, ‘Specialist Nursing’ refers to, the exercising of higher levels of judgment and decision-making in relation to the nursing care of individuals, families and communities. As a future Leader you must display this higher level of decision-making across four areas; clinical practice, care and programme management, clinical practice development and clinical practice leadership.

At Ulster we focus on developing you as a Leader and help you achieve academic and professional competence in all these areas. This programme is a 50-50 programme, meaning that 50% of the programme is university-based and 50% based in the practice learning setting. In the Practice Learning setting you will be allocated to a Sign-Off Mentor. This Sign-Off Mentor who is an established Specialist Nurse and Leader in Clinical Care will supervise you throughout the Programme. He/she will assess you and sign off your competencies prior to recording the professional qualification with the NMC. You will also be allocated to a Pathway Leader who will supervise your academic development and provide support throughout.

District Nursing students have an additional 20 credits to complete in order to evidence outcomes related to Nurse Prescribing.

Attendance

Full-time students are expected to attend the University for at least 2 days per week, with the remaining time allocated to Practice Learning. Full-time students are normally time-tabled for Mondays and Fridays.

Part-time students attend the University for 1 day per week during Term-Time. In Semester One this is normally a Monday and in Semester Two a Wednesday. Some Pathways have additional days ( i.e Emergency Care) but you will be informed of this at Induction. Practice Learning is organised on days that suit you and your Sign-off Mentor.

All students are expected to attend all classes associated with the programme and be punctual and regular in attendance. Attendance will be monitored both at the University and in the Practice Learning setting and Employers are informed of all absences.

Work placement / study abroad

All students must complete 75 days Practice Learning in an aproved setting. Students must have direct interaction with patients and families during this period. Supervision by an expert Specialist Nurse (Sign-Off Mentor) will occur during Practice Learning. A Specialist Practice Qualification (SPQ) Portfolio is required to evidence achievement of professional outcomes.

Career options

Graduates of this programme take up posts as Specialist Nurses. Most are in Team Leadership positions. There is 100% Employability associated with this programme.

Specialising in adult nursing means that you will work with adults of all ages, with diverse health conditions. Nursing is concerned with the holistic care of an individual. The practitioner employs skills and knowledge to promote and maintain health and to restore physical, social and psychological wellbeing wherever possible. Adult nursing strives to maintain the dignity and independence of the client, supporting individuals to achieve as full a recovery as is possible.

Communication skills are essential to set patients at ease under pressurised and sometimes difficult situations, as is the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care offered to each patient. You must be willing to take responsibility for someone else’s health and wellbeing, and show the compassion needed to ensure a good nurse-patient relationship.

Unlike many of the older, traditional nursing schools, at Essex you receive a fresh, contemporary and relevant nurse education programme, integrated into a University that is one of the UK's top ten research institutions. We specialise in applied, multidisciplinary research, and also host the NIHR Research Design Service for the East of England.

Placement Opportunities

In order to provide excellent clinical learning experiences for our students, we work in partnership with the NHS and with the independent health and social care sector across Essex to provide placement opportunities. You will work with experienced nurses in a diverse range of clinical settings (primary and secondary care, public and private sectors, adult and the elderly, acute care and specialist services).

Whilst on placement you will have a mentor allocated to you, and contact with a member of the academic team linked to that placement.

You can choose to study this course at either our Colchester campus or our Southend campus - and your placements will correspond to the campus you choose. Colchester students will have placements in north Essex, while Southend students will have placements in south Essex.

Professional accreditation

Successful completion of the course will allow you to register as a qualified nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Specialist facilities

The School of Health and Human Sciences is located at two sites; in the Kimmy Eldridge building at our Colchester campus and in the Gateway Building at our Southend campus.

We have purpose-built nursing skills labs at both our Colchester and Southend campuses.

Within our School of Health and Human Sciences, we have a range of specialist clinical laboratories and IT facilities to assist you with effective learning and the acquisition of new skills.

We offer excellent physical and online resources in terms of libraries, computer labs, datasets, archives and other research materials. You can take advantage of our links with the Institute of Social and Economic Research, which conducts large-scale survey projects, many for government, EU and other public agencies, and has its own library. The UK Data Archive is also based at our Colchester Campus and stores national research data.

Adult nursing is a person-centred profession with the primary aim of promoting the wellbeing and social inclusion of all people through improving or maintaining physical and mental health (Department of Health, 2010). Adult nurses provide care for people over the age of 18 and increasingly for older people with complex conditions. They may also care for people with a mental health, learning disability or children. Adult nurses work in a range of settings including A&E, critical care, medical and surgical wards, rehabilitation units, GP practices, healthcare centres, hospices and in people's own homes.

What will you study?

The first year is divided into two parts. In part one you will undertake a bridging module introducing you to the foundations of nursing and healthcare. In part two you will look at the context of nursing within a variety of client groups within your specific field of nursing.
In your second year (part three) you will learn about the complexities of nursing at an individual and organisational level as well as preparing for your transition to registered nurse.

As a University of Southampton student when you complete your PGDip you have the option to return to ‘top-up’ the diploma to MSc. The Master of Science Top-up Award aims to enhance your knowledge base and skills to be a critically aware practitioner able to appraise and, if necessary, challenge practice. You will be enabled to use effectively a philosophy of care that is based on evidence, to develop and lead service provision that meets the needs of a 21st century health and social care service.
