If you are involved in any aspect of defence acquisition, then this course is relevant to you. Whether you are involved in establishing or managing capability requirements; engaged in procurement, commercial or contracting activities; or developing and implementing support solutions, this course will provide the underpinning knowledge and develop the critical thinking skills required for effective management of defence acquisition. This course offers three pathways - General Acquisition, Through Life Support and Commercial. The MSc programme also provides recognition by a number of professional bodies including the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS), as this is a CIPS-accredited course, accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), and, eligibility for a Chartered Management Institute Diploma.

Overview

To be successful in the defence acquisition community requires a clear understanding of the fundamental issues that impact on the establishment of sound commercial relationships; the development of integrated acquisition solutions and the delivery of operational excellence. We aim to develop the ‘T’ shaped individual, with a broad appreciation of strategic issues, and a greater understanding of defence acquisition. The course provides and develops the skills to critically analyse management theories (acquisition), which can be applied to modern, increasingly commercialised, national and international defence acquisition management, in order to enhance the quality of decision making. Architectural regeneration is the collective activities of reusing, adapting and evolving existing buildings within an urban or rural context. The activities recognise the impacts these decisions and interventions have on the regeneration of a place, and are underpinned by the principles of environmental, social and cultural sustainability.

This programme promotes an interdisciplinary approach that combines critical thinking and analysis, as well as creative design. It is based on the ethos that the regeneration and development of the inherited built environment, with its social and cultural fabric, is an essential component of sustainable development.

It prepares you for a practical and leading role in organisations involved in architectural regeneration and development. It is international in focus, with an emphasis on field research and design/implementation projects.

Why choose this course?

Oxford Brookes has an established international reputation for its excellence in teaching and research related to international vernacular architecture, architectural conservation and regeneration. Staff teaching on the programme, including Dr Aylin Orbasli and Dr Marcel Vellinga, combine different disciplinary backgrounds with academic and practice experience, and active involvement with projects in different parts of the world. We house the Paul Oliver Vernacular Architecture Library.

We stimulate students towards more innovative approaches and dynamic ways of thinking that are now essential to secure a viable future for historic urban environments, traditional settlements and the world’s vernacular architecture. The international nature of the programme builds up skills to work in different cultural contexts and will introduce students to a network of international organisations in the field.

This course in detail

The course is offered at three levels: as a postgraduate certificate, a postgraduate diploma and a master's degree. Normally candidates enrol for the master's degree, but it is possible to enrol directly on the PGCert or PGDip, either on recommendation from the admissions tutor or as an exit point from the MA.

In total, 180 credits are required to complete the MA in International Architectural Regeneration and Development. These are divided into two parts: 120 credits must be successfully completed to qualify for the postgraduate diploma. During Semesters 1 and 2 all MA students take taught core modules amounting to 90 credits and choose options amounting to 30 credits. Research methods seminars and the dissertation itself account for a further 60 credits required to achieve the MA. For the postgraduate certificate 60 credits are needed.

Teaching and learning

The aim of the course is to provide the knowledge and tools that will enable you to recognise the potential of, and contribute creatively to, the appropriate and sustainable regeneration of the inherited built environment in urban or rural contexts, including vernacular architecture.

The course will help you develop a critical awareness of the cultural embodiment of the built environment and associated regeneration and development processes, and attain skills and tools that are necessary to propose and implement innovative yet culturally sensitive and environmentally sustainable strategies and interventions.

Teaching methods include a combination of lectures and seminars, design studios, workshops and group discussions, field study and master classes.

Careers and professional development

Jobs in architectural regeneration can include a wide range of prospects including private sector consultancy assignments, public sector decision making positions or working for not for profit organisations delivering or assisting the regeneration process.

Graduates of this programme have gone on to work in a wide range of positions in the regeneration field internationally. Much of the success of a career in regeneration is combining the knowledge and skills learnt in the programme with professional skills gained in previous study and practice. Although we are unable to directly ‘find’ jobs for programme graduates, we regularly make recommendations through a good network of contacts and alumni and share employment opportunities with current students and graduates of the programme.

Graduates with architecture backgrounds often go on to work in practices specialising in regeneration or rehabilitation. Younger graduates have found that regeneration expertise has given them an edge and therefore more responsibility in practices they are working at. Those with more experience have found opportunities to diversify and gain positions in consultancy or multi-disciplinary practices.

There are also a wide range of jobs in the non-governmental sectors, ranging from managing small non-governmental (charitable) organisations to working on projects for major donor bodies like UNESCO. We have had an Indian graduate working on post-disaster rebuilding in Haiti, a Japanese graduate working on the preservation of vernacular architecture in Vietnam, and a Canadian graduate running donor-assisted construction programmes in Papua New Guinea. Closer to home, a UK graduate with a background in law is managing a townscape heritage initiative on behalf of the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Overseas students in particular, who have joined the programme from public sector assignments, have found that the degree has helped them both specialise and progress in their departments on their return. One graduate has gone onto head the procurement team in the Ministry of Municipalities specifically dealing with major regeneration projects. Several others work for their respective national heritage authorities.

Other graduates have used the programme as a stepping stone for PhD study, at Brookes or elsewhere. A number of former graduates are now teaching regeneration and conservation at degree and postgraduate levels.

PART 2
Students are required to undertake an in-depth business research exercise. It is a vehicle for the integration of skills and knowledge learned during Part 1. It is a substantial piece of work carried out over a period of time, and students can follow their personal preference of subject specialisation.

All students attend a research methods workshop. Following the submission of a research proposal, they are allocated a supervising tutor with whom they will communicate regularly and who will support them throughout the process.

Teaching and learning

The core areas of study are based on the following key themes:

Each of these four themes is informed by six strands of subject specialist knowledge: Economics, Accounting and Finance, Human Resource Management, Operations and Project Management, Marketing and Leadership and Strategic Management. The delivery of the modules is sequential so that you're able to apply the latest managerial theories to a real life situation in a holistic approach from the outset.

Although the acquisition of knowledge and understanding will be delivered through a variety of strategies, the use of real life case studies is central to our teaching and learning strategy.

Strategy for teaching and learning

Real life case study:
At the start of the course each participant chooses a case study (or case studies if one does not cover all scenarios) based on their disciplinary background and/ or the chosen MBA flavour. The teaching methods are integrated throughout the four core modules and demonstrated in examples and applied to the case study. For example, under the first module-Inside the Modern Organisation – the case study is used so that the participant can address the key issues across the various disciplinary streams.

Master classes:
A series of master classes delivered by external experts in the various specialist fields will be delivered throughout the academic year enabling our students to engage with contemporary management issues.

Residential weekends:
Two residential events will support students learning

Lectures, seminars and workshops:
Each of the four core modules will be delivered by a team of academics from each of the subject discipline stream. Interactive seminars and workshops will support the lectures and have a strong focus on small group activities to encourage the active participation of students throughout the academic year, developing peer learning, the sharing of knowledge and support amongst the diverse student body.

Self-managed learning:
Self-managed learning activities to supplement and consolidate classroom based activity include: reading texts and relevant journals, application of knowledge to additional problem based exercises, engaging in coursework, group discussion, review of key topics and examination preparation where appropriate. Many of these activities are supported by the virtual learning environment (VLE).

Professional links

LSBU has recently been appointed, as one of a small group of universities, to Buying Solutions Pan Government Framework Agreement of study and qualifications in Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and Masters in Public Administration (MPA). We are the only London-based university to be approved to deliver both the MPA and MBA awards to government staff on a part-time and executive basis.

The qualification is relevant if you are a management professional responsible for serving overseas customers and clients through exporting, or if you are involved in overseas commercial activities. What you will study

To qualify as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant students are required to complete:
• 15 examinations
• 450 days of technical work experience, which you gain by obtaining a training contract with an appropriate employer

We offer a flexible portfolio of ACA courses that appeal to large or small training organisations.Our average student pass rate on our ACA course since its inception in 2012 has been 83%.

Weekly day release tuition (with block revision):
• Available at City Campus, Newport for all Levels (Certificate, Professional, Advanced)
• Papers taught for one day per week, with a block revision period at the end
• Typical tuition period lengths:
• Certificate Level papers – 10 weeks plus revision block
• Professional Level papers – 11-14 weeks plus revision block
• Advanced Level – 18 weeks plus revision block
• Advantages: Knowledge built up and exam question practice undertaken week on week. Students build skills gradually and sustainably, and are not absent from their work place for long periods of time (which is particularly important for smaller accounting practices)

Full block delivery:

• For example, students study two papers at a time at Professional Level and attend tuition for four whole weeks, spaced across a number of months

Assessment methods

Certificate level:
Each assessment is 1.5 hours long and each exam will be e-assessed.

Professional level:
Modules will be assessed by paper based exams. Each will be 2.5 hours long, with the exception of the Financial Accounting and Reporting paper which will be assessed by a three hour exam.

Advanced level:
Consists of two technical integration papers and a case study:

• Technical integration papers will be 3.5 hours long
• Case Study will be four hours long

Learning and teaching methods

Students will attend workshops which will contain lecture, tutorial and question practice elements.

ACA students enjoy early responsibility and excellent career progression. Many ACA students double their salary during training. Salaries for newly qualified ICAEW Chartered Accountants are on a par with careers in law and banking and many become partners or financial directors early in their careers, leading to a greater variety of opportunities.

The growth of digital communications and its effect on reputation and branding have been apparent in recent years. News and opinions can spread quickly online often fuelling international print and broadcast media news agendas, providing new challenges for PR practitioners.

This International Public Relations Masters programme has been developed to reflect the growing trend for the public relations profession to have an international outlook and approach to strategy. Programme content has been developed to reflect this shift as well as incorporating the more traditional skills required by practitioners to support the industry as it evolves.

The CIPR’s recent report, ‘The State of the Profession 2013/14’, presents a healthy industry with an increasing range of opportunities for graduates and practitioners. As such graduates of this exciting masters course are expected to enjoy enhanced career prospects - both for new professionals and those seeking promotion.

In addition to a team of expert and experience academic staff, keynote tutorials and seminars will be delivered by industry practitioners and guest speakers from a variety of organisations in the ‘not for profit’ and commercial sectors, drawn from LJMU's Employer Forum, alumni network and World of Work Careers Centre.

You will be based in the Redmonds Building, which is located in the heart of Liverpool’s bustling Knowledge Quarter. As a postgraduate student of Liverpool Business School, you will have access to the School’s postgraduate study areas, as well as its social spaces and café.

LJMU’s libraries are well resourced and open 24 hours a day for those who require access to learning resources at any time of the day or night.

During the validation period, the programme team will be seeking professional accreditation from PRCA and CIPR so that the programme’s learning outcomes are closely matched to those of the industry’s key professional bodies.
