This MA reflects – and is informed by – staff interests across periods, locations, and theoretical approaches: from the Early Modern period to contemporary writing; British, American and transnational literature; sexuality; and cultural heritage.

Each MA module is reflective of areas of staff expertise, ranging from the gory delights of the Gothic to how associations between authors and locations lead to the development of literary heritage sites, such as Dove Cottage.

Northumbria’s Humanities department works with a range of cultural partners including New Writing North, the co-operative movement, Tyne & Wear Archives and Museums and Shandy Hall, providing students with direct industry exposure and live project opportunities.

Teaching And Assessment

During the English Literature MA you will be encouraged to become more aware of the production and determination of meaning by historical, social, political, stylistic, ethnic, gender, geographical and other contexts.

This heightened awareness is facilitated through examining literature produced within a wide range of contexts: different periods; geographical locations; as well as a variety of social backgrounds (institutional, gendered, private, public, domestic). This wide-ranging critical examination opens up new perspectives on literary texts and provides you with the strategies needed to discuss literature in expert and critically informed ways.

You will choose your non-core modules from a pool while the core modules Critical Contexts and Research Methods: Traditional and Digital will run in all years. You conceive your dissertation topic individually in conjunction with a supervisor of similar research interests.

Learning Environment

The delivery of the MA offers a degree of flexibility by allowing you to choose your learning environment. The MA in English Literature is offered in a traditional classroom setting with regular face-to-face supervision, or alternatively you can complete the course via distance learning through a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

The Humanities department is made up of a community of learners all the way through from first year undergraduate to final year PhD level. All Humanities staff are engaged in research and actively create the knowledge that is taught in the department.

English Literature MA students, as part of Northumbria’s Humanities department, will have access to the new Institute for Humanities which houses a range of specialist research resources.

Workshops, seminars, critiquing sessions and small groups led by writers and editors provide an intellectually stimulating environment within which you can develop confidence in literary forms and techniques.

You’ll produce a portfolio of creative writing, including an accompanying commentary for assessment for each module. This is a substantial body of work that demonstrates your ability to develop your own writing voice and edit your own work.

Humanities at Northumbria is composed of three subject teams: History, Literature & Creative Writing, and English Language & Linguistics, and is also developing strengths in the fields of American Studies and Heritage Studies.

Our teaching team are active researchers who routinely incorporate their expertise and enthusiasm into their teaching. Many of the staff have worked in forensic science laboratories and have been involved in high profile cases such as the Stephen Lawrence, Joanna Yeates, Suffolk strangler and Jigsaw murder cases. Their areas of research include toxicology, the analysis of fibres and their transfer and persistence and the analysis of ancient DNA.

Academic staff include former forensic biologists, forensic toxicologists, and forensic fibre experts. They continue to maintain close links with the industry including the police and practising forensic scientists. Many of them are well-established within professional forensic science societies and organisations, which directly inform policy and practices within the field.

Our teaching will give you a solid grounding in all the technical areas that are key to forensic science, while simultaneously developing the higher level of independent thinking and advanced interpretation that is expected at Masters level. Northumbria’s LPC provides vocational training across a range of subjects and practical skills, which enables you to apply your legal knowledge in a practical context. This highly successful course offers flexible learning options to allow you to choose a specialism that is right for you.

All LPC students are guaranteed either a placement with a legal firm or a mentor, who is a recent LPC graduate either undertaking a training contract or a newly qualified solicitor. Our placements offer a range of opportunities and can accommodate individual preferences in legal practice. These can include placements in small or large firms, commercial or high street firms or in-house with companies such as Virgin Money and Sage group.

The course has a high staff/student ratio meaning you will have regular contact with highly qualified and experienced practitioners.

The course is taught in two blocks: in stage 1, the three core practice areas of Business Law and Practice, Property Law and Practice and Litigation are taught and assessed, along with Wills and Administration of Estates, Solicitors’ Accounts and Professional Conduct. The skills of Legal Writing, Interviewing and Advising, Drafting, Research and Advocacy, are taught and assessed in the context of the core subjects.

In stage 2, you will choose three elective modules which you will decide on in consultation with your tutors, ensuring your LPC is tailored according to your interests and career plans.

Please note, optional module choices will be grouped and will run in designated blocks, meaning some module combinations will not be possible. Dean’s Awards – LPC

Northumbria Law School is pleased to announce that we have established a Dean’s Awards Fund to provide scholarships of up to £1,000 for selected applicants for the 2017 LPC intakes.

The Dean’s Awards will be open to students who have applied to Northumbria Law School for either the full-time or part-time LPC. Students must have selected Northumbria as either their first, second or third choice and have applied via the Central Applications Board for the full time programme, or directly to the University for the part time programme.

Given that the Legal Practice Course is designed to prepare students for training contracts in England and Wales, a simulated training contract application will be used as the selection method.

The History MRes course is centred around research-rich learning and delivery.
