MBA Masterclasses

For MBA Executive part time and distance learning students, you will be invited to attend a series of MBA masterclasses (five in total on Saturday’s 10-4pm) which would link to your modules.

The MBA Masterclasses are not a compulsory part of your study however, they give you the opportunity to enhance your study, meet with the module leader and network with fellow MBA students.

The module enables placement students (as future managers and leaders) to analyse the ways in which the design and organization of work places and spaces might influence organisational culture. The design and interior layout of buildings represent ‘the visible part of the culture of an organization’, with these spaces being representative of an organisation’s collective values, beliefs and behaviours.

Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Introductory Certificate

The CIM Introductory Certificate provides an internationally recognised qualification in marketing. We provide all the materials necessary to prepare you for this award as part of your course fees. In order to achieve this award, two CIM assessments must be successfully completed in addition to your MBA study.

PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner Award

Work Experience Opportunities

As a full time, on campus student, you can elect to participate in a Work Placement – completing the module Organisational Culture and Work Environments, instead of Business research (consultancy project). These placements can enable you to develop your skills and knowledge in a work environment, with the aim to give you an advantage over the competition for jobs and scholarships after you graduate.

Your placement would last between six and 12 months, and be appropriate to the level of study and you should also be paid. We will support you in finding and securing a placement opportunity, however it must be noted that placements are highly competitive and there is no guarantee of a placement offer being made by an employer.

Whilst on a work placement you will attend two full-day workshops held at the university, and complete a research project based on the organisation in which you are working.

If you think a work placement is not for you, or are unable to secure a placement within the first nine months of the programme, then you will be automatically transferred to our Business Research (Consultancy) Project module to gain the required credits to complete the MBA. The Business Research (Consultancy) Project module will be taught in three full day intensive workshops and supported with one to one supervision. You will have approximately three months to work on your project and will complete your MBA programme within 12 months. You will also have the opportunity to develop your skills through the taught employability skills programme, where you will be given opportunities for one-to-one support and guidance for professional and career development.

Schedule
The length of study for this course is one year for those that are studying full time. Students that are taking this course part-time or through distance learning can expect the course duration to be two years.

The programme is completed by full-time study on Park campus at Northampton Business School. Normally, you will complete two semesters of 14 weeks, with between 12 and 15 hours per week in the classroom with your tutors and fellow students. You will be expected to engage in significant additional study, around 20-25 hours per week in self-directed study, learning and networking and attending additional workshops to support your achievement of the professional body memberships and awards. The full-time programme normally runs twice a year with September and January starts.

Assessments

The programme is highly enterprise and business focused with an emphasis on real life business situations and problems. As such it has a mixture of assessment involving practical work, presentations, essays, reports and case studies and examinations.

You will investigate and evaluate the range of alternative approaches to Logistics and Supply Chain Management today, looking forward over the next five years, making use of theoretical and industry sources. Every stage of the supply chain, from raw material supply to resource recovery will be covered, as will the many modes of transport, on land, sea and in the air.

Strategic issues such as multi-channel retailing, supply chain collaboration and lead time compression will be covered in workshop style sessions led by our experienced teaching staff, many of whom have previously held board level appointments in globally renowned logistics companies.

Here at the Institute for Creative Leather Technologies (ICLT), you will cover the science and technology of leather manufacture in a way designed to suit graduates for senior tannery positions. Leather is returning to prominence as nearly all alternatives require using up non-renewable carbon-based materials. Scientific advances in conjunction with environmental responsibility have transformed the leather manufacture industry into a modern scientific process, creating a highly sustainable material with high value in many sectors such as sports, automobiles, luxury goods and fashion.

Course content

The MSc Leather Technology (Professional) course is unique in that it aims to provide the opportunity to acquire and/or enhance technical skills within the subject of leather technology. Students will study within an environment that encourages the development of intellectual creativity as well as providing transferable skills to undertake research with respect to advanced technologies, developing skills and flexibility necessary to discriminate between technical and entrepreneurial issues and relating these to the needs of the leather industry such as successful management of the commercial operations.

This course offers students the opportunity to work and learn in a state-of-the-art teaching tannery for some of the modules, and will also be working with staff with a mix of academic and industrial experience. Many of the staff carry out research in various leather subjects and over the last 20 years Northampton leather research has built a leading world-wide reputation.

Industry leaders are frequent visitors to meet students and provide knowledge on current technical and commercial aspects of leather and its fascinating chain from farm to fashion or one of its many other end uses.

The MSc Leather Technology (Professional) course is delivered to meet student flexibility. The University of Northampton is working as the Initial Teacher Training provider for a diverse and innovative group of Lead Schools and their Alliance schools in Northamptonshire and its surrounding counties to support the delivery of PGCE QTS programmes through the School Direct route. The PGCE QTS programme is the same for those on a University place or School Direct place.

If you would like to apply for a School Direct place for training to teach in 2017-18, then you will need to consider which route will be most suitable and which will be available with different Lead Schools. There are two routes for School Direct applicants:

1. The School Direct (Salaried) route: you will be employed by one of the Lead Schools or their Alliance schools and receive a salary while you train to become a teacher. This programme will lead to Postgraduate Certificate of Education or Professional Graduate Certificate of Education with recommendation for QTS.

2. The School Direct (Training) Programme: you will be based for a large part of your training in one of the Lead Schools or their Alliance schools but you will pay fees for the training programme. This programme will lead to Postgraduate Certificate or Professional Graduate Certificate with QTS. This programme will develop you into a highly committed, creative and reflective teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will be training to teach children within the age range offered by the Lead School. You will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding such that you can demonstrate the professional standards for teaching required by the Department for Education and exceed the minimum expectations for each Standard.

The programme is structured to promote academic rigour, skilled practice, independence and flexibility. The emphasis in the programme reflects the primary national curriculum and priorities. You are expected to engage with Learning Events through the active use of technological tools in the pre and post face to face sessions and online learning activities. Schedule

Learning Events comprise of pre and post face to face sessions with tutors for groups or whole cohorts. During the University based days, you are expected to be available between 9-5pm. During School based days, you are expected to be in school between 8.20am and 4pm.

Assessments

Assessment is continuous. You will engage in four assignments which will contribute towards your M Level Modules. Your teaching, including planning and assessment, is also assessed against the Teachers’ Standards. Partner schools share the responsibility for assessment during the practical teaching.

In July 2015, students studying on the course benefitted from a week-long Summer School that provided the opportunity to have marketing concepts brought to life through study trips, visiting speakers and participating in a Marketing Challenge based on Northampton’s leather heritage.

Course content

The programme is divided into three stages. To complete the Master’s level qualification you must complete six modules and an independent research thesis to a total of 180 credits. During the course, you complete three compulsory modules and choose three optional modules in stages one and two. Optional modules are subject to staff availability and student interest. Each 20 unit module will be equivalent to 200 hours of study and the module guide, which you will have access to during your studies, has details on how these are allocated. The Research Thesis is worth 60 credits and is therefore equivalent to 600 hours of study.

The research thesis (dissertation) is the final compulsory module in stage three. This ensures that you study the same broad themes within wastes management, but are also able to tailor the focus and level of the qualification to suit your individual needs, experience, interests and career aspirations.

You can also take certain modules as a ‘one off’, either as a taster before deciding whether to study the course in full, or as an opportunity to update your skills in a particular area.

The MA in Education part time is an innovative and flexible course that caters to the needs of professionals working in the field of education. There are various pathways through it and it can therefore be closely tailored to your own professional development. The MA is built on a modular basis enabling you to build it around your personal and professional life.

The MA comprises of modules that can be studied one by one. The key element of many modules is the provision for ‘shared enquiry’, enabling participants to engage with other professional colleagues and researchers in developing critical approaches to enquiry within practical education (and education-related) contexts.

There are various pathways through this MA. However the final module taken by all students is a research thesis, via which you will have the opportunity to research and write about an area of practice, relevant to you, in great depth.

Distinctive approaches to learning and teaching

The course is taught through a series of seminars and workshops with additional small group and individual tutorials being provided for all students. All teaching takes place in small groups which enables students to engage in discussion and debate. In addition to the main programme, students will have opportunities to attend research seminars, day courses and other activities. All modules are taught by members of the university’s academic staff, all of whom are active as researchers and involved in publication and continuing professional development. Each module is co-ordinated by a module leader who has extensive experience and expertise in the area of the module content. The course also makes use of visiting lecturers from other academic institutions from within the UK and further afield.

Course content

The part time master’s programme is designed for professionals who want to extend their knowledge, skills and understanding of learning, teaching, leadership, assessment and other educational issues.

It typically takes three years to gain a master’s degree via this route. However, teachers who have studied with the University of Northampton before may well already be several steps along the journey towards gaining an MA in Education.

Whichever modules you choose you will engage in detailed analysis and evaluation of established and innovative theoretical perspectives and practice-based approaches to education. During your time at the University you will have an opportunity to study various aspects of education and engage with a wide range of teachers and researchers. Additionally modules will be available in teaching primary English and in leadership and management.

Within the overall framework of the Masters in Education, we also offer specialist pathways in Early Years and Mathematics.

Methods of Learning

The course is taught through a series of seminars and workshops with additional small group and individual tutorials being provided for all students. All teaching takes place in small groups which enables students to engage in discussion and debate. In addition to the main programme, students will have opportunities to attend research seminars, day courses and other activities hosted by the Faculty of Education and Humanities.

The entire MA involves 140 hours of taught sessions, all of which are taught as interactive sessions involving activities and discussions. This means students will typically attend classes for 6 hours per week if studying full time, although this may vary depending on the modules taken. In addition full-time students will be expected to undertake a further 24 hours per week of private study and research. Part-time students taking the course over 3 years will be expected to do one third of this. You should however be aware that this is not consistently spread across the year and that at some points you may be working considerably more hours in a week. For all students there will also be the chance to attend additional optional sessions and presentations connected to the research undertaken within the Faculty of Education and Humanities.

Schedule

Part-time. Completion of the part-time MA usually takes three years. However, if master’s level (level 7 credits) have been attained on other courses including the PGCE, NPQH, or programmes run by the University of Northampton then it is possible to complete this MA in a shorter time.

Assessments

Depending on the route chosen, the course assessment involves essays, portfolios, presentations and small scale research projects. Your MA will always conclude with the production of a thesis or dissertation in which you will investigate, in depth, an aspect of your own practice.

Do you want to achieve a nationally recognised award as a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo)? Join us at the University of Northampton for our SENCo programme starting in October 2016.

Completion of the course has been mandatory for the teacher designated as the SENCo since 2009. New SENCOs must gain this qualification within three years of taking up their SENCo post. It may also be relevant for those aspiring to be SENCos or those who were already in the post of SENCo prior to 2009 and wish to pursue accredited professional development in this area. Completing the course entitles candidates with 60 credits which can be used towards an MA in SEN and Inclusion.

The programme is taught by experienced senior lecturers from the School of Education’s Centre for Education and Research (CESNER) alongside Local Authority and Teaching School partners with expertise in SEND. This programme is endorsed by NASEN.

Training will take place at a local venue following an induction day at the University of Northampton’s Park Campus.

Course content

The overall aims of the course are:
-Developing inclusive teaching approaches and co-ordinating provision for pupils with SEN and/or disabilities in their schools.
-Applying methods to identify additional needs and monitor the progress of pupils with SEN and/or disabilities.
-Instigating evidence-based, strategic approaches when deploying, supporting and managing other teaching and support staff.
-Establishing networks and partnerships with other SENCos and local advisors.

The programme includes:
-Two modules each worth 30 Level 7 credits at Master’s Level.
-Face-to-face taught sessions (seven days in total spread across the academic year 2016-2017).
-Online support – discussion groups, networking.
-Access to university support and services.
-Mentor support.
