This consultancy project, lasting up to three months over the summer, involves you in either supporting a start-up company, finding growth opportunities for a medium-sized firm, or improving the effectiveness and efficiency of a function within a large, blue chip company.

Projects are sourced from a range of industries and sectors based in Manchester and the North West region. These can be SME's to large corporations. You'll also receive additional application and interview support from the School's Careers Service.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment varies depending on the modules chosen. It may include a combination of coursework, group project assessment, presentations, assignments, report, individual essay and examinations.

The summer project is offered if you do not have any unit marks below 40%, and not more than one unit mark between 40-49% in semester 1. If you don't meet these criteria you will be offered a project related to an external client, with no direct contact with them. For those working on group projects, a group report and an individual report will be produced (both 6,000 words).

Alternatively, you may undertake an academic dissertation of 12,000 words.

Course unit details

During the course you will be taking 180 credits in all. The eight taught modules during semester one and two total 120 credits and consists of both compulsory and optional taught units which can be viewed in the list below.  

The compulsory units are built around the problems of strategic management, the operation of multinational enterprises, comparative business analysis and the skills necessary to work efficiently in a international business environment. The optional courses allow you to specialise in particular aspects of strategic management and business analysis.

During the summer period, you will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills learnt during the first two semesters, enhance your skills while working with a major real life client and work as part of a team. The result of this project is presented as a research report/dissertation. This part of the course is closely related to the Manchester Method that enables you to experience experiential learning and helps you to become a reflective practitioner or manager.

Examples of recent projects include:

  • Exploring the strategic expansion of the volunteer tourism industry into the academic market
  • An in-depth analysis of the wholesale market and changing trends towards online shopping
  • Strategic positioning in relation to the offshore wind turbine market in northern Europe
  • Identification of venture capitalist acquisition targets in the UK software industry

Projects are sourced from a range of small, medium and large businesses, across a wide range of sectors in Manchester and the UK's North West region.

The project is offered if you gain a minimum of 50% in each first semester course unit. If not, you will be offered a project related to an external client, with no direct contact with the client. For those working on group projects, a group report and an individual report will be produced (both 6,000 words).

Alternatively, you may undertake an academic dissertation of 12,000 words. Your supervisor will help you to define the research and advise, guide and support you throughout.

This inter-professional course places work at the centre of learning. COURSE STRUCTURE

The full course runs part-time over two years giving you the chance to exit with the following awards:

TEACHING

The facilitation strategies within the course will prepare you for the development of generic and specific practice at advanced level. In essence this course embraces the concept of learning at work to develop new ways of working and will develop the 'advanced practitioner' as outlined by the NHS North West Concordat for Advanced Practice (2009).

You will engage in critical self-assessment of knowledge and skills against appropriate competency frameworks in order to identify, in negotiation with their employer and academic supervisor, an individual learning pathway within the course.

The facilitation strategies for the course are dependent on sound group dynamics, trust and cohesion. The course will commence with an orientation programme, which will explore your expectations, roles and responsibilities, work based mentors and assessors and learning facilitators, along with confidentiality and other issues.

CAREER PROSPECTS

This course is normally commissioned by the North West Workforce Modernisation Hub to meet the needs of modernising the NHS and workforce development. On completion, you will be eligible for a non-medical advanced practitioner role in your own specialist field such as midwifery, accident and emergency, radiography, mental health and intensive care outreach.

Graduates of this course have undertaken a wide variety of advanced practice roles within their own field of practice. Many have made a significant contribution to improving services for their patient group and have demonstrated evidence of the impact of their role.

Whilst many advanced practitioners remain in post, some have chosen to become non-medical consultants.

LINKS WITH INDUSTRY

The emphasis on work-based learning rather than classroom teaching distinguishes this course from more traditional taught courses. The collaboration between the workplace and academic facilitators is innovative and embraces the ethos of overall course philosophy and design and is in accordance with the University strategic objective of strengthening partnerships with partner organisations.

Our Department of Primary Teacher Education has a team of over 40 primary teaching staff who between them have expertise in all primary curriculum subjects, enabling us to offer a wide range of specialisms. The majority of teaching staff are actively involved in research, linked to our Education and Social Research Institute, one of the leading UK centres for educational research. We have an Initial Teacher Education Partnership with over 500 primary schools and strong community links across the North West region, ensuring we can offer our trainees a diverse range of placement experiences.

Our aim is to train confident teachers and reflective practitioners who will have strong prospects for employment and career progression. Trainees have access to Manchester Met's dedicated Careers and Employability Service and within the PGCE programme are supported in securing their first teaching appointment.

After graduation we continue to provide support and advice to our Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs), including online resources, conferences and peer networking.

Our full-time PGCE Primary Education provides intensive training leading to Qualified Teacher Status ('QTS') for early years establishments and primary schools in the 3-7, 7-11 or 5-11 age range.

School-based training is combined with taught sessions at university and independent study. Applicants can choose our University-led ('Core') PGCE training route, or one of our School-led ('School Direct') routes, both of which lead to QTS. We work in partnership with 18 school alliances in the North West of England to offer School Direct places (salaried and non-salaried).

University-led ('Core') route

Trainees typically spend around 12 weeks in university during the year, including a block at the start of the course, combined with at least 120 days of school-based training, in at least two different schools. Manchester Met organises placements.

School-led ('School Direct') route

Trainees are attached to a lead school within an alliance of schools - Manchester Met works in partnership with 18 school alliances across the North West region. Depending on the term times of the school(s) involved they will typically spend around 30 weeks in school and around four weeks in university for taught sessions. Placements are organised by the lead school.

On both routes trainees will experience school-based training in at least two different schools, and have the opportunity to undertake an inclusion placement with a focus on Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). The School-led also includes a visit to a Key Stage 3 setting. Throughout the PGCE trainees are supported by a personal tutor, experienced teaching staff and mentors in university and at school.

Candidates can apply for both School Direct and University PGCE routes; both have the same entry requirements. Successful completion of either route includes 60 Masters level credits.

Early Years route (Manchester only)

This route mirrors the PGCE Primary Education programme, with an Early Years focus. Completing this course will enable practitioners to teach in both the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1.

Applications for PGCE routes starting in September 2017 should be made online via UCAS Teacher Training which is expected to open in late October this year. Early application is recommended as places are limited. Please check our entry requirements before applying.

Assessment Only Route to QTS in Primary sector

Experienced, but unqualified graduate teachers, wishing to complete a formal qualification to gain Qualified Teacher Status may be eligible for this route. It will suit those who have taught in at least two schools or colleges, and who have substantial experience in two consecutive age ranges. It is not sufficient for candidates only to have experience of two schools.

Important information

Manchester Metropolitan University has been undertaking a review of the long-term future of academic provision at its Cheshire campus. It has now been confirmed that the University will withdraw from the Cheshire campus. This means that we expect the campus to close in the summer of 2019.

As the withdrawal from the campus will be a phased process we are still pleased to receive applications for one year full time postgraduate taught courses starting in 2017 on the Cheshire campus. We also continue to welcome applications for part time postgraduate courses of two years in duration in the Exercise and Sport Science department starting in 2017. Placement options

Manchester Met organises placements for trainees on our University-led ('Core') PGCE route through our extensive Initial Teacher Education Partnership. Our Partnership vision is to train 'outstanding, critically-literate professional teachers who will challenge and inspire their learners'.

The schools we work with share our commitment to aspiration and excellence, with a focus on strong mentor training and support for trainees. There is also an emphasis on national priorities, including behaviour management, literacy and numeracy.

Our partner schools cover a wide geographical area and diversity of social, economic and cultural backgrounds, ranging across inner city, suburban and rural settings, enabling us to offer our trainees a broad range of placement opportunities.

We organise placements starting with the trainee's term-time postcode and matching this with placement offers from schools. Trainees are expected to travel up to 90 minutes each way from where they live and to arrive in school 45 minutes before the school day commences. We take into consideration special circumstances, such as disabilities, cultural requirements and medical conditions. In addition, we match carefully to ensure a breadth of experience across different key stages.

Trainees spend at least 120 days on contrasting placements in two schools related to the two age phases of their particular route through the course, with time spent in each key stage/phase. They are attached to each school for a substantial period of time and expected to engage in the full life of the school.

In their first placement trainees gain experience across the full age range of the school and teach in one class for an extended period, taking increased responsibility for that class.

They then begin to teach a range of curriculum areas, as well as gaining an understanding of cross-curricular themes.
The second placement focuses on the whole curriculum and extended management of the classroom in order to meet the requirements for the Teachers' Standards.

Trainees are required to pass both periods of school-based training.

School Direct trainees will undertake teaching practice at their lead school and other schools within the alliance. Placements are organised by the lead school.

All trainees are supported in various ways whilst on placement:
-Every trainee has a personal tutor - this is the tutor who knows the trainee best at university and will usually teach them for some aspects of their studies. Personal tutors write trainee references for employment. For School-led routes the school writes a reference.
-Every trainee is allocated a visiting tutor whilst on placement. This tutor supports the school when assessing the trainee's progress and do do this observes each trainee teaching.
-Every trainee has a school mentor, this may be their class teacher or someone in the school who oversees placements
-Often there are multiple trainees on placement in each school, providing an inbuilt support network

This is an integrated course that prepares students for the breadth of contemporary physiotherapy practice in the continually evolving Health and Social Care sector. You will study in a small cohort where staff will get to know each student, you will start learning in the clinical environment from the first semester, and you will learn in a way that makes links between theory and practice from day one.

The structure of the course is innovative; there is one module for each of the six semesters, with integrated part-time clinical placements for four of the six modules. Approximately 2/3 of the clinical placements are part-time (1-2 days per week), and there is also a five-week full-time elective placements towards the end of the course where you can choose your own clinical placement location.

You’ll be taught in our purpose built rehabilitation and assessment facilities, which includes a therapy clinic and movement analysis laboratory. We have excellent links with Physiotherapists working within the NHS and private practices across the North West. There are also links with charitable organisations and international institutions and hospitals, providing excellent opportunities for our students to gain experience of the breadth of contemporary physiotherapy practice.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

There is particular emphasis on ‘real life’ assessments that reflect the ways in which students will learn and practice during the course. Interprofessional working is an important part of Physiotherapy and Healthcare. What will I study?

How will I study?

This programme equips graduates to provide leadership and technical support in public health in middle and low income countries. It covers a wide range of topics in public and global health, including key disciplinary skills in epidemiology and social science and applied topics such as disease control and programme management. The programme has a specialist focus on the theories and methods of improving and managing health systems and human resources. It aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to enable them to take a leadership role in enhancing the effectiveness of health care organisations using quality and human resource management initiatives. Following the taught component, participants complete a dissertation including a period of applied research either overseas or in Liverpool.

AIMS

LSTM education courses are taught within a dynamic environment by staff working at the cutting-edge of research in tropical medicine and global health. CAREERS

There are many career opportunities within the field of Public Health throughout the world. Public Health, and in particular Planning and Management, can be seen by the huge deployment of staff and other resources from NGO’s, UN Agencies, WHO and Military during the Ebola Outbreak in West Africa, H5N1 Avian Influenza, Zika Virus, and MERS, as well as through the response planning to natural disasters such as earthquakes and Tsunami’s. People with public health, planning and management skills are highly sought after. Train to be a Physician Associate – an innovative, professional healthcare role, that is growing within the NHS, with a starting salary from £30,000.

A Physician Associate is a medical professional providing patient care under the supervision of a Consultant or General Practitioner. Their main focus is diagnosis and management. Consequently, their daily activities include interviewing and examining patients, ordering tests and making decisions about patient management.

This postgraduate programme is taught at either our Preston city campus or our Westlakes campus near the Lake District. See below for more details.

We teach in small groups offering unrivalled student support and direct contact hours with staff; over 25 hours per week of direct, interactive teaching by staff experienced in the clinical sector.

The Masters dissertation is completed incrementally over the two years rather than as an additional module to at the end of the programme.

Approx. 50% of the programme is spent on clinical placement across a full spectrum of opportunities: urban, rural, specialised hospital and general practice. The geographical locations of UCLan campuses provide students with a rare opportunity to experience such a wide range clinical disciplines.

All of our course content is in line with the requirements of the Physician Associate Competence and Curriculum framework (2012) laid out by the Royal College of Physicians Faculty of Physician Associates at the Royal College of Physicians.

This course is run in partnership with Health Education England North West (HEENW) as part of the North West Physician Associate programme.

These organisations provide the clinical placement training which represent approx. 50% of the whole programme. They also offer the main employment opportunities in the NW. Hence graduates receive a training which is both nationally accredited and locally relevant. The latter ensures a smooth transition from student to graduate PA.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Our programme makes use of case-based learning, clinical and communication skills, role play and applied anatomy/physiology/pathophysiology teaching.

This course is offered at either Preston city campus or Westlakes campus near Whitehaven, close to the Lake District. Each applicant has the option to nominate their chosen campus. Both campuses offer affordable and attractive living compared to other city campuses. .

We teach in small groups offering unrivalled student support and direct contact hours with staff in state-of-the-art facilities. Our clinical skills laboratories have a vast range of equipment, to help develop clinical skills in hospital, home and GP surgery environments.

A comprehensive understanding of applied human anatomy is enhanced with our Human Anatomy Resource and Learning Centres (HARLCs) which provide a focal point for students to engage in learning about the human body. You will also have access to our Anatomage tables and a range of diagnostic imaging modalities.

Knowledge and understanding of the full range of applied biological sciences is taught through a range of lectures and practical activities by our experts in the full spectrum of disciplines required for the PA curriculum.

Approx. 50% of the course will be spent on clinical placements with our NHS clinical education partners across Lancashire and/or Cumbria. This will include rotations in General Practice and a variety of hospital specialties. All students will gain experience in the care of both adults and children. It follows therefore that you must be prepared to travel to clinical placement sites throughout Lancashire and Cumbria with travel of up to 90 minutes both ways.

Assessment is by a variety of methods including written assignments, practical and theoretical examinations, workplace-based clinical activity and portfolio content.

On completion of the course, students will be well prepared to take the National Exam and successful completion of this will allow them to refer to themselves as a Physician Associate and apply to join the profession’s managed voluntary register.

OPPORTUNITIES

There is currently around 100% employment of UK graduates of Physician Associate programmes.

Upon completion of the National Exam, Physician Associates have a wide range of choice of careers in both primary and secondary care.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

The course prepares the candidate for the Faculty of Physician Associates, Royal College of Surgeons examination which is required to practice as a PA in the NHS. Successful completion of the MSc Physician Associate Practice (MPAP) enables the student to sit this national examination.

The MA in Arts Management, Policy and Practice enables students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the history, theory and practice of arts management; to gain an insight into the range of professional opportunities in the creative and cultural sector; and to acquire direct experience of the many areas of arts management. The programme has a strong practical, hands-on element. At the same time it offers a solid theoretical grounding, exploring cultural policy in its historical context and encouraging critical engagement with the philosophical, political, social and economic imperatives informing contemporary practice. Above all, we aim to produce pioneers rather than bureaucrats.

Lecturers from the Centre for Arts Management teach the MA with considerable input from arts professionals including staff from the Martin Harris Centre, Contact Theatre, the Royal Exchange, Whitworth Art Gallery and many other local cultural organisations. We also work closely with our sister programme, the highly regarded MA in Art Gallery and Museum Studies.

The programme is designed to serve as an entry-level qualification for recent graduates as well as offering professional development for mid-career practitioners. It offers flexibility and opportunities for specialisation, while ensuring a thorough grounding in essential principles and methodology. It provides a solid foundation for careers in different areas of the arts and creative industries, and caters for arts practitioners as well as aspiring managers.

The siting of the programme close to a range of leading arts venues offers a unique opportunity for students to engage with the practical considerations of arts management. The Martin Harris Centre is a hub of cutting edge research and interdisciplinary investigation: in addition to the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall and John Thaw Theatre, it is home to the Tipp Centre (Theatre in Prisons and Probation), the Centre for Screen Studies, Centre for Applied Theatre Research, Manchester Theatre in Sound (MANTIS), Manchester Centre for Music in Culture (MC2), and the NOVARS Research Centre for Electroacoustic Composition, Performance and Sound-Art. Other cultural organisations based at the university - Manchester Academy, Contact Theatre, Manchester Museum and the Whitworth Art Gallery - are only a few minutes' walk away.

The programme also benefits from the exceptionally rich grouping of arts-based institutions and agencies in Manchester and the North West - an area celebrated for containing more theatres than any other region outside London and now hosting the BBC at the new Media City at Salford Quays. The programme is based within the School or Arts, Languages and Cultures. The core of the School's interest is the field of human cultures, beliefs and institutions. Its work embraces the material, visual, creative and performative dimensions of culture, and as such fosters a rich interdisciplinary culture led by world-renowned scholars with a diversity of expertise, from analysts to creative artists, from historians of ideas to cultural theorists. We work particularly closely with staff from the highly-rated departments of Music and Drama.

Coursework and assessment

All students take two core modules (Arts Management: Principles and Practice, and Cultural Policy) and write a dissertation (15,000 words, or for a practice-based dissertation 8,000-10,000 words plus project documentation). The remaining credits (two or three additional modules) are taken from a range of options including:

  • Work Placement in an arts organisation
  • Business Strategies for the Arts (Marketing, Finance and Business Planning)
  • Creative Learning: Arts, Heritage and Education
  • Professional Practice Live Project
  • Subject to availability, modules may also be selected from the MA in Art Gallery and Museum Studies or from elsewhere in the school.

Our award-winning pre-registration Adult Nursing programme has been developed in partnership with practice colleagues and service users to provide a high quality, flexible, student-centred and patient-focused educational experience.

This course is designed to lead to careers in Health Visiting or School Nursing. Applicants must be a first level nurse or midwife with a current or pending registration on the NMC Professional register and must have a supported practice placement. All aspects of the course focus on the development of skills, knowledge and attributes required for the SCPHN role. There is a focus on public health, community development, health needs assessment and health inequalities.

The programme builds on the core values of the NHS constitution and is approved by the NMC to offer students the opportunity to gain a specialist practitioner qualification in School Nursing or Health Visiting.

The course is taught by a variety of clinical and academic staff so that students benefit from a wide range of medical knowledge and expertise.
