What does the PGCE involve?

This PGCE programme combines the very best of school and university training. It lasts one year and is full-time. It provides trainees with an intellectually stimulating course that challenges their assumptions, while providing them with an in-depth practical experience of the classroom environment.

The course offers a range of opportunities for study in differing schools. Most importantly, it creates the opportunity to work full-time within a school environment and to be part of a school community.

The major aim of the course is to prepare trainee teachers effectively as specialists in their chosen subject and to produce teachers who are confident and competent in the craft of teaching, as well as being able to contribute within an active school environment.

The course also aims to facilitate trainee teachers in their development of critical inquiry, and to engage trainee teachers in the application of educational theory and current research. These latter elements contribute to the PGCE qualification awarded to trainees along with the QTS Certificate.
Where will my placements be?

The course is based in the largely rural Tendring area of north east Essex which stretches from Colchester to Harwich. The area is pleasant and welcoming with a comprehensive range of social and educational amenities. Educational facilities are extensive, including UCS, the University of Essex and Colchester Institute. The Training Centre is located at Clacton County High School and during teaching practice trainees will travel to two partner schools in Clacton, Harwich, Brightlingsea, Thorpe-le-Soken and Frinton-on-Sea.

How is the course structured?

Programme delivery is strongly influenced by trainee-centred strategies which involve group and individual reflection, negotiation and individual learning audits, and contracts and individual development profiles. During the first term there is an intensive induction programme. Trainees will spend two days a week following both a general educational theory course and a subject specific course. The remainder of the week is spent in the base school, observing experienced teachers and preparing for the first teaching practice. Students will also be expected to complete two assignments.

The second term provides students with five to six weeks of teaching practice in the base school followed by a primary school placement, plus further subject and general theory sessions and preparations for the second teaching practice in a different confederation school. Students will also be expected to complete one assignment and a primary school report.

In the third term, students complete their second teaching practice placement, complete their final theory sessions and prepare for final assessment. They will also be expected to complete a critical review and a career entry profile.

The University of Sunderland is the longest established provider of IT and Computer Science Education.

Course overview

The PGCE Computer Science equips you to share your interest in computer science with young people and inspire them to realise their potential. A growing number of pupils are choosing to take computer science at GCSE and A Level, which means there is a rising demand for great computer science teachers.

Sunderland has a heritage of teacher training which dates back to 1908. The course prepares you for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which is an essential qualification for teaching in state-maintained schools.

This programme is also offered as part of our School Direct route.

Given the current shortage of computer science teachers, the Government is offering extra incentives to attract more graduates into teaching the subject. Financial incentives are available for those who train in 2016/17, go to The Department for Education website for more information.

The course has two strands. The first strand is based at the University and provides a solid grounding in theory and practical issues. The second strand is based in partner schools where you will undertake practical teaching experience.

Our Energy programmes allow you to specialise in areas such as bio-energy, novel geo-energy, sustainable power, fuel cell and hydrogen technologies, power electronics, drives and machines, and the sustainable development and use of key resources.

Bio-energy

Our research spans the whole supply chain:
-Growing novel feedstocks (various biomass crops, algae etc)
-Processing feedstocks in novel ways
-Converting feedstocks into fuels and chemical feedstocks
-Developing new engines to use the products

Cockle Park Farm has an innovative anaerobic digestion facility. Work at the farm will develop, integrate and exploit technologies associated with the generation and efficient utilisation of renewable energy from land-based resources, including biomass, biofuel and agricultural residues.

We also develop novel technologies for gasification and pyrolysis. This large multidisciplinary project brings together expertise in agronomy, land use and social science with process technologists and engineers and is complemented by molecular studies on the biology of non-edible oilseeds as sources for production of biodiesel.

Novel geo-energy

New ways of obtaining clean energy from the geosphere is a vital area of research, particularly given current concerns over the limited remaining resources of fossil fuels.

Newcastle University has been awarded a Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher Education for its world-renowned Hydrogeochemical Engineering Research and Outreach (HERO) programme. Building on this record of excellence, the Sir Joseph Swan Centre for Energy Research seeks to place the North East at the forefront of research in ground-source heat pump systems, and other larger-scale sources of essentially carbon-free geothermal energy, and developing more responsible modes of fossil fuel use.

Our fossil fuel research encompasses both the use of a novel microbial process, recently patented by Newcastle University, to convert heavy oil (and, by extension, coal) to methane, and the coupling of carbon capture and storage (CCS) to underground coal gasification (UCG) using directionally drilled boreholes. This hybrid technology (UCG-CCS) is exceptionally well suited to early development in the North East, which still has 75% of its total coal resources in place.

Sustainable power

We undertake fundamental and applied research into various aspects of power generation and energy systems, including:
-The application of alternative fuels such as hydrogen and biofuels to engines and dual fuel engines
-Domestic combined heat and power (CHP) and combined cooling, heating and power (trigeneration) systems using waste vegetable oil and/or raw inedible oils
-Biowaste methanisation
-Biomass and biowaste combustion, gasification
-Biomass co-combustion with coal in thermal power plants
-CO2 capture and storage for thermal power systems
-Trigeneration with novel energy storage systems (including the storage of electrical energy, heat and cooling energy)
-Engine and power plant emissions monitoring and reduction technology
-Novel engine configurations such as free-piston engines and the reciprocating Joule cycle engine

Fuel cell and hydrogen technologies

We are recognised as world leaders in hydrogen storage research. Our work covers the entire range of fuel cell technologies, from high-temperature hydrogen cells to low-temperature microbial fuel cells, and addresses some of the complex challenges which are slowing the uptake and impact of fuel cell technology.

Key areas of research include:
-Biomineralisation
-Liquid organic hydrides
-Adsorption onto solid phase, nano-porous metallo-carbon complexes

Sustainable development and use of key resources

Our research in this area has resulted in the development and commercialisation of novel gasifier technology for hydrogen production and subsequent energy generation.

We have developed ways to produce alternative fuels, in particular a novel biodiesel pilot plant that has attracted an Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) AspenTech Innovative Business Practice Award.

Major funding has been awarded for the development of fuel cells for commercial application and this has led to both patent activity and highly-cited research. Newcastle is a key member of the SUPERGEN Fuel Cell Consortium. Significant developments have been made in fuel cell modelling, membrane technology, anode development and catalyst and fuel cell performance improvements.

Course overview

This Masters is one of the few postgraduate degrees in the UK to be accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ). The combination of an MA and NCTJ Diploma will significantly boost your employability as a sports journalist. This course is ranked 6th out of the 17 UK NCTJ postgraduate courses by performance.

This is an intensive course that trains you to think, write and research like a journalist; previous study of journalism is not a requirement. You will learn how to write previews, match reports and sports features, and you will also cover media ethics and law, reporting and shorthand. In the final stage of the course, you will undertake a dissertation or a practical project, such as a sports journalism website or a series of in-depth articles.

We encourage you to publish your work and build up your portfolio. Opportunities for publication include SportsByte, our student-run website covering sport across Sunderland.

The mediaHUB
Throughout your time in Sunderland you will have an outlet for your creative talents in the mediaHUB, a bustling multimedia newsroom on the top floor of our David Puttnam Media Centre that will give you a real taste of life as a working journalist. The mediaHUB runs websites covering sport, news, entertainments and fashion, provides the content for news bulletins on our award-winning Spark Radio and is responsible for writing and editing Spark magazine.

Journalism/PR suites
We have four journalism suites, each with 18 Apple Mac workstations with design applications and video editing. There’s an additional open access project completion suite with 20 more workstations and colour laser printing.

Broadcast Journalism Newsroom
The Broadcast Journalism Newsroom has 20 workstations plus a Sky feed with two 40” plasma screens. Each workstation has industry-standard software including Newscutter, Burli and ENPS.

Technical support
The Journalism Newsroom has another 20 Mac workstations and offers drop-in sessions run by a rota of working journalists who can advise on projects, assignments and your personal portfolio. These sessions are available every day of the week during term time. In addition, technicians are available to help you use all the software and equipment.

Radio studios
We have six radio studios including a transmission suite for 107 Spark FM, our student-run community radio station and a city centre hub.

TV studios
We have two broadcast-quality TV studios complete with green room and changing facilities. Equipment includes four Steadicam rigs plus dolly, track and mini crane. We have over 40 full HD tapeless field camera systems.

Other media facilities
We have a live Sky feed and off-air recording facility, including DVD and Blu-ray recording, plus extensive footage archive/library. There is also a 203-seat cinema with full HD projection, 7.1 surround sound facility and the capability to play 3D feature films.

The course will enable you to relate debates and methodological principles in education research to broader issues in social science research and educational policy and practice.

It also provides you with opportunities to acquire the theoretical frameworks, knowledge, understanding, skills and aptitudes necessary to undertake advanced research in education.

You will be a member of the Research Centre for Learning and Teaching at Newcastle University (CfLaT). You are encouraged to contribute to our education research culture, participating in events such as seminars, research teas and project dissemination events.

Delivery

The course structure combines compulsory and optional modules which help you to engage with and evaluate educational theory and research. You will also be taught how to prepare and carry out a research proposal. The optional module and the dissertation topic can be chosen to relate specifically to your professional situation.

A variety of forms of assessment are used, carefully chosen to reflect the form of training provided. There are written assignments of 4,500-5,000 words but other forms are used such as:

-Critical methodological review
-Data practical assessments
-Portfolio

The dissertation is assessed through a thesis of 15,000 words maximum.

Module timetables are flexible. We repeat many taught sessions to allow for those with personal and professional commitments. You can choose from daytime and early evening (4-6pm) sessions as well as a combination of compulsory and optional modules.

Some of our students choose to study full time and some choose to complete study over two years part time. If you are concerned about fitting study around full time work commitments it is worth contacting us to find out how this might work for you.

The taught aspect of the course runs from the final week of September through to the end of March. After this, dissertation study is by tutorial arrangement between you and your supervisor. This can be face-to-face or remote, to allow you to continue your study at home, elsewhere in the UK or overseas.

You will gain skills in history taking, physical examination and diagnosis. You will also study clinical theory and undertake clinical placements.

This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to qualify as a physician associate. Physician associates provide patient care within the National Health Service (NHS). They work under the supervision of doctors and health care professionals. The course will suit graduates of a bioscience discipline.

You will learn how to work to the medical model, with the attitudes, skills and knowledge base needed to deliver holistic care and treatment. You will develop your understanding of clinical practice through a combination of:
-Case based self-directed learning

Delivery

Year one runs over 46 weeks and includes:
-Six week training in clinical, communication and diagnostic skills using mannequin-based and role play simulations
-A 27 week team-based learning course introducing core clinical knowledge through clinical case studies
-One day a week in a primary care setting developing history taking skills
-A six week apprenticeship in a hospital based setting to introduce the role of the physician associate

Year two comprises rotations in the following areas followed by a two week assessment period:
-Eight weeks of emergency medicine
-Three weeks of mental health
-Six weeks of community medicine/primary care
-Three weeks of obstetrics and gynaecology
-Three weeks of paediatrics
-Eight weeks of general medicine
-Three weeks of general surgery

You will then undertake a ten week senior apprenticeship. Trainees will work as physician associates under clinical supervision.

Placements

Alongside learning basic clinical theory you will undertake clinical placements. You will spend at least 1600 hours in clinical placements within NHS trusts and primary care providers in the North East.

Evidence shows that work performance is improved if employees have a positive physical and mental wellbeing. Many organisations have therefore realised that they should take a proactive approach to wellness, rather than focusing on illness and absence management. This has created a need for highly skilled health, safety and wellbeing managers.

A key component of this course is a major piece of independent work, where you will focus on a specific area of interest and develop an in-depth project.

You will study health and safety regulation and legislation, communication, management tools, risk assessment, control and mitigation for a range of workplace hazards typical in most industries and organisations. You will also examine related issues such as the impact of societal factors on health in the workplace, and the wider public health agenda.

Health, Safety and Wellbeing MSc is a new course at the University of Sunderland, and is accredited with The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). As a student on this course, you will be able to join IOSH as a student member and attend IOSH seminars offered by the North East regional group.

Course overview

This course is for people who need to improve their science subject understanding before starting a one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) course.

The structure of the course will vary according to whether you want to teach chemistry, physics or another science. You should have at least an A Level in the science subject that you intend to teach, and, you should have already received a conditional offer for initial teacher training (ITT). You will complete this preparatory course ready for starting ITT in September.

When you successfully complete your ITT, your career prospects will be very good. There is a national shortage of science teachers, particularly in physics and chemistry. So there are excellent job opportunities both in the North East and throughout the country.

Sunderland has a heritage of teacher training which dates back to 1908. What’s more, we’re one of only a small number of teacher-training institutions in the UK offering a broad range of science.

There is no tuition fee for this course, and you will be paid a bursary while you are studying.

Course content

This course enhances your skills and knowledge in science education, preparing you for teacher training.

You will complete a series of units which will equip you with essential subject knowledge, ahead of a one-year initial teacher training (ITT) course. This course runs for up to 36 weeks and will complete in time to ensure that you are ready to start your ITT in September.

Resilient cybersecurity systems and infrastructures attempt to prevent attack and protect individuals and businesses from such attacks.

Course overview

This newly developed Cybersecurity course will provide you with the technical and organisational skills to make a difference to society by providing safe and secure digital environments, allowing the public, business and industry, and the economy to function safely.

As a student studying Cybersecurity, you'll contribute to the wellbeing of society by raising awareness of threats and attacks and designing systems, structures and networks to identify attacks and recover from them allowing business continuity.

The course has been designed to cover a wide range of relevant, interesting and current topics in the cybersecurity field. You'll study industry-specific topics and specialise in areas such as network security, cybersecurity in organisations, big data security and breach and incident response.

Our close links to industry and businesses in the North East, as well as the research expertise of our academics makes this course unique and ensures that the course structure is developed according to the needs of the employment sector. This course will provide you with a thorough grounding in the creation of cybersecurity solutions for information security, systems security and network security. You’ll develop the skills to determine, establish and maintain cybersecurity infrastructures, and you’ll examine the underlying technologies of secure systems and their inherent risks and privacy issues. You’ll also learn how to select appropriate tools and techniques to address and manage risks, threats, vulnerabilities and potential attacks, in order to deliver cyber resilience.

You’ll cover topics such as digital forensic tools, network technologies, security procedures and defensive programming. You’ll also choose an optional module that covers a particular specialism such as big data security, user experience design or artificial intelligence for cybersecurity.

Throughout the course you’ll develop skills and knowledge that give you the confidence to apply cybersecurity tools and techniques; to be innovative in using cybersecurity skills; to solve cybersecurity problems, identify breaches and attacks; to create opportunities for information security management, risk management and business continuity; and to enable effective and efficient implementation of cybersecurity systems and infrastructures.
