Why American Studies in Nijmegen?

The world loves American culture, but is deeply distrustful of American power and politics. At Radboud University, we offer critical insights into what America means. Our Master's program gives students the opportunity to become experts in the concept of ‘America' in a variety of fields: US history, literature, culture (including popular culture, film, theatre, political history, foreign policy, constitutional law, religion and social science. Radboud University's programme distinguishes itself from other's by emphasizing the cultural and political relations between the United States, its neighbours and Europe.

The open classroom experience is what teachers and researches of the Master`s program “North American Studies” want to create for their students. For an example of the experience, in the project “Politics & Culture of Liberation” students and teachers worked closely with the National Liberation Museum in Groesbeek, the Regional Archive in Nijmegen and the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The project resulted in an exhibition on the impact of American culture on Europe and the Transatlantic World. This is only one example of the many creative seminar projects that students realize in the Master`s program.

Literatures and Cultures of North America in International Perspective

America's cultural icons are the world's cultural icons. From Walt Disney to the Statue of Liberty, from Hollywood to Time magazine, and from Jack Kerouac to Philip Roth, the influence of American culture and literature around the world is huge. Our program allows students to critically explore the significance of American culture in countries around the globe. Aside from studying the variety of meanings assigned to American cultural products abroad, students will explore the diversity of the American cultural expressions themselves.

Transnational America: Politics, Culture and Society

With the so-called ‘transnational turn', American Studies increasingly looks beyond national borders. In this program you will explore the politics, culture and society of the United States within, outside and at its borders. Central themes are the exchange of cultural and political ideas between North America and Europe, and related issues in the field of Americanisation, globalisation, cultural mobility and political and cultural imperialism.

Study American issues with an interdisciplinary view

True to the tradition of American Studies, our program teaches students to approach issues from different angles and to think in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary ways. We also offer excellent internships, thanks to our global network. Furthermore, we are the only university in the Netherlands to teach oral communication skills in the American language throughout our Bachelor's program, so that students who go on to study for a Master's degree have near-native language abilities.

High level of communication in American English

In Nijmegen, you will find yourself in a dynamic learning environment where the level of scholarship and communication in (American) English is extremely high. This is one of the reasons why our program is so popular. Another reason is the choice the University offers between two fascinating fields within which you can create your own custom-made program: ‘Literatures and Cultures of North America in International Perspective' and ‘Transnational America: Politics, Culture and Society.'

Within the program in North America Studies, you can choose from the following two specialisations. Each specialisation comprises of a one-year, 60 EC program including a 20 EC Master's thesis project. Literature and Cultures of North America in International Perspective
All students enrolled in this Master's specialisation take compulsory foundational courses. In addition, students take a compulsory Master's Thesis Colloquium and participate in Master's Thesis Workshops to help them structure their Master's Thesis research and support their writing process. There is an elective space in the specialisation to allow students to engage in an internship or engage in further courses. Options for elective courses include courses on Native Americans, African-American literature and the American borderlands.

Transnational America: Politics, Culture and Society
If you follow this specialisation, you will take several obligatory foundation courses. In addition, students take a compulsory Master's Thesis Colloquium and participate in Master's Thesis Workshops to help them structure their Master's Thesis research and support their writing process. There is a small elective space in the specialisation to allow students to engage in an internship or engage in further courses. Options for elective courses include a special course on the Beat Generation, one of America's most influential avant-garde movements; Native Americans; African-American Literature and Culture; American Borders: Contact Conflict and Exchange; or American Constitutional Law (taught in Dutch).

The MA North Korean Studies provides the only dedicated master’s degree in this subject area outside South Korea. Uniquely, this one year course embeds the learning and teaching in a graduate introduction to social science philosophies and methods, provides training in the Korean language geared to the language level of the student (beginners, intermediate, or advanced) and, at the same time, introduces a wide range of materials on the society, economy, politics and International relations of North Korea. The course director, Professor Hazel Smith, is a world-leading scholar whose publications provide global benchmark studies on North Korea. The MA is taught by staff situated in UCLan’s International Institute of Korean Studies, which works within a globally established network of influential academics, diplomats, journalists and public policy officials who work on North Korea.

The course will provide you with the comparative advantage in journalism, diplomacy, international organisations, NGOs, and global business of gaining knowledge and expertise, not just on North Korea, but in the international relations of East Asia, which is the motor force of the world economy yet also contains some of the globe’s pressing security problems; the most important to all of the global powers of which is North Korea’s nuclear programme. Students graduating from this master’s course will have developed knowledge, analytical skills and language skills (Korean at beginners, intermediate or advanced level) that will equip them to work in a number of employment sectors dealing with international affairs. The Master of Arts programme in North and Latin American Studies combines North American and Latin American Studies into a single and unique syllabus which draws from a variety of academic disciplines and gives its students profound insight into the two Americas as distinct entities, as well as their global ties and relations. This answers to a rising demand for graduates with a broad academic background and specific knowledge of America, particularly at a time when North and South are growing together on many levels, while the gap between Europe and America is widening.
This is an accredited programme which has received the Seal of Quality of the Foundation for the Accreditation of Study Programmes in Germany.

Syllabus

The programme consists of three module groups:

A) Foundation module
B) American modules
C) Profile modules

A) General themes of the core module are intercultural communication and comparative cultural studies as relating to North and South America. This module draws from the course content and methodologies of a number of disciplines to lay the foundation for the profile-setting and consolidation in subsequent modules.

B) Module group B comprises the three American modules: Anglo-American Studies and Latin America (I), Political Science (II) and Geography (III). Students can set a specific focus by subject or geographic region.

C) In the two profile modules, Transnational America (I) and Management and Marketing (II), students may choose their electives in accordance with their own abilities and interests. This freedom of choice enables students to create a distinct academic profile and enhances their employability. The entire Transnational America profile module is to be completed in South America, e.g. while enrolled at one of the the University of Passau's partner universities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador or El Salvador.

The degree programme includes a written Master's thesis on a topic chosen from module group B. Students who complete the programme will receive a total of 120 ECTS credits.

The LLM programme is a single subject law programme that may be taken over a period of one year (full-time), or part-time over a period of two, three or four years. Read more
The LLM programme is a single subject law programme that may be taken over a period of one year (full-time), or part-time over a period of two, three or four years. Every student will be required to take modules equivalent to four full units. The assessment of one of the chosen full units (which must be from your chosen specialism) will be by means of a 15,000 word dissertation.

The dissertation must be linked to a module offered at SOAS itself, and attendance on the module will be treated as being part of the process of supervision. With permission of the LLM tutor, students will be entitled to select one complementary subject or the equivalent from comparable Master’s module at SOAS including appropriate language modules. A complementary subject may be chosen in substitution for either a full or a half-subject.

Examinations for all taught modules will be held in May/June of each year and the dissertation will be due for submission during September of the final year of registration. The assessment for each module may vary according to the extent to which the research component of each module is to be stressed.

It is expected that all students will graduate with an LLM in law. It is possible, however, for students wishing to graduate with a ‘specialist’ degree, to do so by way of opting to take three or more modules from the relevant subject groupings below. In each case, the student must undertake a dissertation in that subject grouping.

The Master's specialisation offers courses on the contemporary North American novel, manifestations of the American avant-garde, and/or the literary and cultural works of American ethnic groups such as African Americans, Native Americans and Latino/as. There is emphasis on the societal and sociopolitical context in which literary and cultural communications acquire meaning.

Admission requirements for international students

1. A completed Bachelor's degree in American Studies or related area
You are required to have a Dutch Bachelor's degree (or equivalent, from a research university) in American Studies or a Bachelor's degree in English Language & Culture with a specialisation in American Studies. If you specialised in English you can apply if you had at least 40EC in courses related to American Studies. If you have a different academic background, you will need to have achieved 60 EC in courses related to American Studies.

2. A proficiency in English
In order to take part in the program, you need to have a sufficient level of English. Non-native speakers of English without a Dutch Bachelor's degree or VWO diploma need one of the following:
- A TOEFL score of at least 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based), 100 (internet-based);
- An IELTS score of at least 7.0;
- A Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a mark of B or higher.

This programme focuses on management and its environment in the Middle East and North Africa, and includes high-level courses in international management and finance disciplines. It also draws upon regional experts and management specialists within the University and from positions within based commerce, finance and government. The core modules enable you to study the principles and applications of international management and the interplay between global and local factors influencing management in the Middle East and North Africa. Structure

The MSc International Management for Middle East and North Africa (MENA) has three components:

1. Four compulsory courses
2. Elective course(s) to the value of 1.0 unit
3. Dissertation of 10,000 words on an approved topic

The 10,000-word dissertation is worth 25% of your final mark. During term 2 you will submit your dissertation proposal and select an academic supervisor. Over the ensuing months you should meet with your supervisor at least three times before the end of term 3 for guidance. The bulk of your dissertation will be written over the summer to meet the mid-September deadline.

Not all elective courses are offered every year; please check your preferences with the Programme Convenor. Also note that if half units are selected, one term 1 course and one term 2 course needs to be chosen.

- Part-time Study
Part-time students are required to complete three of the core courses during their first year, then one core and two elective courses plus the dissertation during the second year.

Those enrolled on the three-year programme are required to complete three of the core courses during their first year, one core and two elective courses in the second year, and the dissertation in the third year.

What does the PGCE involve?

This PGCE programme combines the very best of school and university training. It lasts one year and is full-time. It provides trainees with an intellectually stimulating course that challenges their assumptions, while providing them with an in-depth practical experience of the classroom environment.

The course offers a range of opportunities for study in differing schools. Most importantly, it creates the opportunity to work full-time within a school environment and to be part of a school community.

The major aim of the course is to prepare trainee teachers effectively as specialists in their chosen subject and to produce teachers who are confident and competent in the craft of teaching, as well as being able to contribute within an active school environment.

The course also aims to facilitate trainee teachers in their development of critical inquiry, and to engage trainee teachers in the application of educational theory and current research. These latter elements contribute to the PGCE qualification awarded to trainees along with the QTS Certificate.
Where will my placements be?

The course is based in the largely rural Tendring area of north east Essex which stretches from Colchester to Harwich. The area is pleasant and welcoming with a comprehensive range of social and educational amenities. Educational facilities are extensive, including UCS, the University of Essex and Colchester Institute. The Training Centre is located at Clacton County High School and during teaching practice trainees will travel to two partner schools in Clacton, Harwich, Brightlingsea, Thorpe-le-Soken and Frinton-on-Sea.

How is the course structured?

Programme delivery is strongly influenced by trainee-centred strategies which involve group and individual reflection, negotiation and individual learning audits, and contracts and individual development profiles. During the first term there is an intensive induction programme. Trainees will spend two days a week following both a general educational theory course and a subject specific course. The remainder of the week is spent in the base school, observing experienced teachers and preparing for the first teaching practice. Students will also be expected to complete two assignments.

The second term provides students with five to six weeks of teaching practice in the base school followed by a primary school placement, plus further subject and general theory sessions and preparations for the second teaching practice in a different confederation school. Students will also be expected to complete one assignment and a primary school report.

In the third term, students complete their second teaching practice placement, complete their final theory sessions and prepare for final assessment. They will also be expected to complete a critical review and a career entry profile.

Humanities at Northumbria is composed of three subject teams: History, Literature & Creative Writing, and English Language & Linguistics, and is also developing strengths in the fields of American Studies and Heritage Studies.

The University of Sunderland is the longest established provider of IT and Computer Science Education.

Course overview

The PGCE Computer Science equips you to share your interest in computer science with young people and inspire them to realise their potential. A growing number of pupils are choosing to take computer science at GCSE and A Level, which means there is a rising demand for great computer science teachers.

Sunderland has a heritage of teacher training which dates back to 1908. The course prepares you for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), which is an essential qualification for teaching in state-maintained schools.

This programme is also offered as part of our School Direct route.

Given the current shortage of computer science teachers, the Government is offering extra incentives to attract more graduates into teaching the subject. Financial incentives are available for those who train in 2016/17, go to The Department for Education website for more information.

The course has two strands. The first strand is based at the University and provides a solid grounding in theory and practical issues. The second strand is based in partner schools where you will undertake practical teaching experience.

This course is based on the banks of the River Wear at The Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s. Employment & careers

Everyone who wants to teach in a state-maintained school in England and Wales needs Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This course leads to QTS and, on successful completion, you will become a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT). The starting salary of an NQT is over £22,000, with extra if you work in London. Teachers see their salaries rise by an average of 30 per cent after their first four years in the job.
