The growth of the nonprofit sector requires new policy considerations and sophisticated advocacy strategies. Nonprofit professionals now must be conversant with and utilize new technologies, digital media and data analytics to further their organization’s mission. International perspectives are more important to this sector than ever, with private/public partnerships being deployed to help solve some of the most intractable problems across the globe.

The increasingly sophisticated nonprofit sector now demands its professionals to have management skills tailored to the unique needs of this mission-based sector. The M.S. in Nonprofit Management at Columbia is your portal to mastering cutting-edge applications of management skills to this particular sector, as well as exploring current issues in policy, law, digital strategies, and risk management.

Choose Options Online and On Campus

The program may be taken part-time or full-time, and students have the flexibility of pursuing many courses on Columbia’s campus in New York City, or online. Some courses are available in a hybrid format offered partly on campus and partly online, combining the benefits of each.

No matter the course modality, students have access to rigorous, world-class instruction by Columbia faculty, group projects and activities, career and professional development, and personal feedback on assignments.

Online, students use a highly collaborative and interactive social learning platform to connect with their instructors and fellow students. All online courses have weekly live classroom meetings with their professors to enable dynamic interaction around course content. In addition, students may participate in discussion groups, complete collaborative and independent coursework, contribute to forums and live polling, and watch videos.

If you have a passion for public service and a desire to improve your community through professional service in the public or non-profit sector, we invite you to look more closely at what the Department of Public Administration at Binghamton University has to offer. We offer a variety of academic program options, all centered around our Master of Public Administration (MPA) program which is accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA).

The focus of the MPA program at Binghamton University is to prepare people to handle the growing challenges facing local governments and nonprofit organizations in communities near and far. The department brings together the energy and expertise of faculty and staff who have active research agendas, strong records of community service and growing national and international reputations. Our diverse student body includes recent graduates of some of the top undergraduate institutions in the United States, representatives from a variety of other countries, as well as practicing public administrators with many years of professional experience.

The MPA

The MPA Program is a 42 credit hour program, comprised of:
- a core of seven courses (25 credits) where students are introduced to the knowledge and skills they need for professional public service
- a three-course (9 credits) specialization or set of electives
- two courses (3 credits) to practice application of learning
- a culminating experience consisting of two courses (5 credits) to demonstrate competencies.

It typically takes full-time students 2 years to complete our MPA Program.

M.P.A. in Public Administration

The M.P.A. in Public Administration prepares you for a wide range of managerial and leadership positions in local, state and national government, the law, and non-profit organizations. For administrators already employed in public service, this 42-credit program provides opportunities to improve your administrative skills, pursue a specific area of interest and prepare for increasing levels of responsibility and management.

The required foundation courses include “Principles of Public Administration,” “Organizational Theory and Behavior in the Public Sector,” “Computer-based Management Systems” and “The Policy Process in Health Care and Public Administration.”

In the Advanced Core Curriculum you will explore various aspects of public sector administration, including “Human Resource Administration,” “Fundamentals of Budgeting and Finance,” and “Administrative Responsibility and the Legal Environment.” Nine credits of electives and a thesis complete this comprehensive course of study.

The M.P.A. degree is accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration.

By carefully structuring the sequence of courses, recognizing comparable course offerings and using courses in one program to count as electives in the other, the MPA-MS Nursing dual degree program allows students to complete both degrees in three years of full-time study, without compromising the professional standards of either program. The 42-credit hour MPA program and the 48-credit hour MS Nursing program can be completed as part of a 68-credit hour program (rather than 90 credit hours required to complete the two programs without the benefit of the dual degree structure).
The MPA-MS Nursing Dual Degree Program prepares students for nursing administrator positions in hospitals, health care facilities and community health agencies. The 42-credit hour MPA program and the 45-credit hour MS in Student Affairs Administration program can be completed as part of a 66-credit hour program (rather than 87 credit hours required to complete the two programs without the benefit of the dual degree structure).

The flexibility of this two-year program gives you the freedom to take an interdisciplinary approach to intriguing questions, in a department that’s small enough to allow close interaction with faculty and fellow students, yet large enough to encompass a wide range of research interests.

Pursue your interests

This program allows graduate students to build on their academic backgrounds and interests through sustained study in a particular area. Our diverse faculty teaches a broad range of topics, and the program allows students to take courses in other departments, broadening their educational opportunities.

Format and assessment

Students may select of one two options: Plan I (consisting of 24 semester hours and a thesis) or Plan II (consisting of 30 semester hours).

All students take four required courses: American Experience I and II and American Studies Colloquium I and II. Students generally take these courses in their first year of the program. The American Experience courses survey American cultural history and introduce students to some of the prevalent texts, scholars, and ideas in the field of American Studies. The American Studies Colloquium, a sustained study that takes place over the course of two semesters, gives students the opportunity to develop a publishable paper on a topic of their choosing. In the course of this project, students do independent research, undergo peer review, and revise various drafts to produce a polished final paper.

In addition to the required courses, students can select from a range of elective courses. Student need at least six hours in seminar-style courses. Although the American Studies Department offers an array of courses each semester, students may choose to take up to nine hours outside of the department.

At the end of the program, students take comprehensive exams, which test their knowledge of the material that they encountered in their particular program of study. Many students find that comprehensive exams provide an exceptional way to review the things that they have learned in the program, and these exams also provide students who want to pursue a PhD with valuable experience doing this kind of exercise.

One of the unique aspects of the program is the opportunity to design and teach a course in your second year — to develop course ideas, design the syllabus, assign readings, and actually teach a subject you’re passionate about. In recent years students have taught courses on Woodstock, Walt Disney, Ronald Reagan, and modern gay America.

Work closely with faculty

The moderate size of our department creates an environment in which faculty are open and accessible, able to build close relationships with their students. And because our program offers only a master’s degree, here you won’t have to compete with doctoral students for faculty members’ time and attention.

Career options

This program prepares students for careers in journalism, public policy, law, public relations, historic preservation, academia, nonprofit organizations and more. While many of our graduate students go on to pursue doctorates at institutions nationwide, other students build meaningful non-academic careers from their connections and experiences in the program. Additionally, many students choose to do internships, which help them make career connections and earn academic credit.

MFA in Theatre Management

The Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Management offers a well-rounded education through coursework from the Department of Theatre & Dance, the Manderson Graduate School of Business, and the College of Communications and Information Sciences.

In addition, students receive invaluable hands-on, practical work experience through a rotation of assistantships, including Assistant Business Manager, Box Office Manager, Patron Services Manager, Marketing Manager, Digital Marketing Manager, and Education and Outreach Manager. These assistantships enhance the students’ professional experiences in all aspects of arts administration, making them desirable to arts organizations and corporate employers.

Enrollment into this program is capped at six per year. However, assistantship awards are limited to a maximum of three per year. Admission to the program and assistantships are awarded based upon a portfolio review, interview and acceptance into The University of Alabama Graduate School. This three year program offers students the opportunity to earn two degrees simultaneously through the Department of Theatre & Dance and the Manderson Graduate School of Business. Students spend the first year of study primarily with the MBA program. Consistently ranked in the top 50 programs for Best Value, Manderson prides itself on small class sizes and collaborative group exercises for students to learn about trends in the business world today.

Additionally, students receive hands-on, practical work experience through rotating assistantships in the theatre management office. Students manage marketing, outreach opportunities and daily operations for the theatre and dance programs including 14 productions throughout the year.

Accountancy at the master's level replaces the rudiments of financial management with real hands-on experience. The Master of Accountancy degree program provides students with a greater understanding of accounting and business than is possible in an undergraduate program.

Purpose

The program prepares students for careers as professional accountants in financial institutions, government, industry, nonprofit organizations and public practice.

Format

Graduates are prepared to research various databases related to troublesome accounting problems, and to exercise judgment in making accounting-related decisions by drawing on their integrated, comprehensive body of accounting knowledge and experience—what all masters have in common.

Students must take a minimum of 30 hours of graduate courses, including a minimum of 21 hours of accounting courses as listed below. Up to nine elective hours, as approved by an advisor, may be chosen from 500-level courses and must be approved by the coordinator of the MAcc program. Students cannot receive graduate credit for a course if they have taken an equivalent course at the undergraduate level. Another accounting course should be substituted with the approval of the coordinator of the MAcc program.
