If a nation is to obtain the maximum benefit from its investments in information technology (IT), a labour pool capable of using IT appropriately is necessary. Individuals who want to realise the potential value of IT in their everyday lives need to be computer fluent able to use IT effectively today. IT is the use of computers and software to manage information.

The MSc Information Technology programme is typically aimed at students with an Honours degree in a non-computing or non-computer engineering discipline. The programme equips graduates with the skills necessary to understand and develop solutions to a wide range of IT problems.

The modules on this programme are paired to provide opportunities to investigate and critically appraise networking and computer technology, software development and database systems, web systems development and user interaction design. Project management, software processes and ethics, security issues and IT life cycle management are also covered.

The MSc is concluded by a three month individual project and is underpinned by the research and consultancy work carried out by the Software Engineering, MUCOM, Multimodal Interaction and Networking and Distributed Systems groups in the School of Engineering and Built Environment.

Career opportunities

Graduates are likely to gain employment developing web and database applications, work in IT project management or return to their original subject specialism enhanced with a thorough grounding in IT.

Assessment

Computing Science at Stirling has strong links with industry. Students can get a first-hand industrial experience through placements and internships with local enterprises and organisations. More specifically, we offer company-based MSc projects to our students where our students can work with an employer to gain valuable commercial experience. We usually place more than 50% of our students with a company for the MSc project duration. We also regularly invite industry experts to share their expertise with students through seminars and talks.

This is a long-established conversion course aimed at graduates from a non-computing discipline. It is designed to enable a career change to computing or update and broaden knowledge and skills if already working in the field. Key areas of study include Object Oriented and Web Programming, Information Systems and Digital Media Systems. A wide-range of optional units allow you to tailor your course to specialise in areas of your choice. A third of your MSc will consist of a solo project with individual supervision. This programme of study is intended primarily for graduates from any non-computing background to obtain fundamental knowledge and understanding of a range of core subjects in Computing. The overall aim of education is to either equip the graduates who want to develop their careers in their own areas of speciality with additional understanding, awareness and skills of IT and Computing, or help those who want to change their careers into IT and Computing. The programme can also serve as a pre-requisite for advanced master programmes in Applied Computing at Buckingham.

Graduates who successfully complete the programmes are eligible for entry into the MSc in Innovative Computing degree programme.

The Graduate Diploma programme consists of 7 taught modules and an individual project. On completing the programmes, you will be able to understand:

Graduates who successfully complete the programme are eligible for entry into the MSc in Innovative Computing degree programme. The Certificate programme consists of 90 units of credit. Students take 6 taught courses over 6 months. The Certificate programme is more suitable for students with science, engineering or mathematics backgrounds. Computing graduates who have applied to study the MSc in Innovative Computing but lack sufficient knowledge in key areas (such as programming, databases and networking) may be required to take the Certificate programme before being admitted to the MSc programme. The overall aims are to:

You will learn how to use state-of-the-art computer science methods to process a range of data, including (but not limited to) big data. You will develop technical, statistical, analytical and data mining skills. The course incorporates methods of statistical analysis and data mining to extract understanding from data, formulate high-quality data models and interpret them to ‘tell a story’. You will learn how to communicate these effectively to stakeholders, bearing in mind ethical, legal and societal implications.

This course provides students with the ability to solve business problems and obtain actionable business insight using analytics. The focus of data analytics is on the movement, analysis and interpretation of data and how derived advanced information can inform business strategy. The programme will firstly, prepare students to work with a variety of complex, structured and unstructured data in the business environment, using appropriate statistical and computational skills and technologies. Secondly, it will enable them to articulate insights confidently when presenting reports and visualizations.

Driven by market demands Data Analytics focuses on the movement and interpretation of data, typically with a focus on the past and present in the business context, Data analytics graduates will develop skills to apply qualitative and quantitative techniques and processes used to enhance productivity and business gain.

Learning, teaching & assessment

Taught modules may involve lectures, tutorials, case studies, laboratories and seminars. Assessment methods are chosen in relation to the particular requirements of a module. These modules vary from 100% examination to 100% continuous assessment. The major project accounts for 80 of the 180 credits required for successful completion of the degree. Students who do not wish to continue to the full MSc qualification may decide to undertake a smaller 20 credit diploma project, leading to a Postgraduate Diploma.

Career prospects

The course has been specifically designed to prepare comprehensively trained Computing professionals, at the same time as addressing the skill gaps identified by the Digital Economy Unit and our own market research on demand for skills in the UK. For this reason the degree has a strong focus on all aspects of Software Engineering and includes modules such as Data Mining, Mobile Development and Information Security – topics in which a skills shortage has been identified.

The Higher Diploma is offered as a one year full-time or a two years part-time.

This is a CONVERSION COURSE and is intended for graduates who do not have Computer Science Degree and would like to attain skills in demand by the IT sector.

This highly successful course enables graduates with first degrees in either computing or non-computing disciplines to take up careers in areas such as business/systems analysis, web development, database design and administration, and project management. The course is also suitable for candidates with some professional information technology (IT) experience who wish to further develop their careers.

For students with little or no IT experience the course provides a full grounding. Those with a relevant background are able to enhance their skills in core areas and build on their existing knowledge through advanced studies.

Professional accreditation
British Computer Society accreditation is currently being sought for this course.

Course structure
Students can join the course in September or February. The course consists of compulsory and optional modules, each lasting 15 weeks. Students study between one and three modules at a time depending on whether they are full or part-time. Assessment is through coursework assignments, and extensive use is made of case studies. The course culminates in a project in an external organisation which provides valuable experience of working and applying your newly acquired knowledge in an IT environment.

The part-time route allows students to pursue the course at a pace that suits their personal circumstances.

Areas of study
The course comprises five core modules:
- Business and Information Systems provides a perspective on the role and uses of IT in business organisations
-Systems Analysis and Design develops the skills necessary for the specification and design of an information system
- Application Building covers the area of software development for the web, including databases and programming languages
- Research Methods gives the student the opportunity to participate in the professional or research community, and to explore a contemporary topic.

Students also choose two or three optional modules, enabling them to explore topics of personal and professional interest. Topics include project management, enabling technologies, the law and IT, advanced software topics, and interaction design.
