Our accredited Management MSc programme will prepare you for a wide range of careers in management. The Management (Public Services) MSc focuses on developing your understanding of the unique management challenges and political drivers within public services and not-for-profit organisations.

Public services often represent the largest body of employers. Together with non-profit organisations, they employ more than 20% of the workforce in many countries, and that figure is growing every year.

On this course, case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice. You will learn about the major functions of management and their integration.

All students on our Management MSc programme complete the same core modules covering the major functions of management until the end of term two, at which point you will be able to tailor the course to your individual strengths and career aspirations through option modules, the option of an additional semester to study abroad, a specialism in one of five areas or a continuation of a more generalist route with our Management MSc

The other specialisms offered are: 

Accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), this course progresses you towards Chartered Manager status – the highest level that can be achieved in the management profession. You will also be eligible for membership to the Institute of Directors.

Course structure

An innovative alternative to a MBA, this one-year, full-time course is designed for graduates of any subject with or without work experience. Case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice.

Teaching takes place over three terms, from late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.

Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are some special intensive workshops on topics such as leadership, management and research, and a one-week tutor-led international study visit to companies in another European country.

Your final project will take place over the summer after teaching finishes. Your optional work-experience based final project may continue for up to one-year past the end of teaching.

Accreditations

Accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), this course progresses you towards Chartered Manager status – the highest level that can be achieved in the management profession.

You will also be eligible for membership of the Institute of Directors, the longest running organisation for professional leaders in the UK. Membership provides you with access to the resources and the opportunity to network with leaders and executives.

International Study Visit

International management and leadership are at the heart of this course. You will work in small, multinational teams to develop international capabilities and build your global network.

Your tutor-led study visit to a European partner organisation will give you an international perspective to your study. Previous students have visited and heard from leaders at Xerox, Mercedes Benz, Carrefour and the European Parliament.

Careers and employability

With an emphasis on understanding the political context in which public services operate, the Management (Public Services) MSc will prepare you for careers in management consultancy, change management and some areas of functional management, for example in high-tech companies as well as the public sector.

The course will also prove valuable if you are interested in starting your own business or pursuing a career as a business negotiator, commercial interpreter, lecturer or researcher. 

The school also has an industrial placements office that can offer you help in seeking work experience. Those who succeed in obtaining a work placement or internship may undertake a work placement report as the basis of their final project.

On the MSc International Management (Human Resource Management) course you will develop an understanding of a range of global businesses, their operations, and the cultural differences you will meet in the practice of international management. You will study the various business functions, such as marketing, finance and strategy, taking into account global environmental factors (economic, political and social) in which international organisations operate. You will also develop a specialism in key areas of Human Resource Management; the business function which many would argue is the most important in the sense that it delivers to the organisation the human resource without which nothing would be achieved.

One of the big differences on this course is the focus on acquiring the skills you will need to work in international organisations. You will learn about a range of international organisations and develop your general management skills and intercultural management skills. You will develop your specific Human Resources Management skills in this same international context. International Management in Practice: Study Trip

You can go to Budapest to experience a hands-on week, learning about the processes within international management. Students meet with leaders of global firms and international organisations, receive presentations from global academic experts, and tour facilities. This module is included in your programme fees, but you are responsible for paying for all travel and accommodation costs and some meals. This is a 10-credit module, which will be formally assessed.

International Business in Practice Study Trip

The purpose of this study trip is to give postgraduate students a hands-on, intensive experience with the ideas and practices of global business. The programme will include presentations from local management executives and experts. Students will have direct interaction with management executives and practices through site visits to major corporations and agencies.

This study trip is voluntary and all costs associated with the trip will need to be funded by you. It is not linked to university assessments in any way. Our MSc in Management is designed for graduates with little or no business experience. It will provide you with management knowledge and skills to complement a non-business background.

The course lasts 12 months and is divided into two semesters and a summer period. Semester 1 introduces core areas of management such as Marketing, Business Economics and Operations. In Semester 2, you will be able to specialise by choosing optional units that interest you. Over the summer you’ll put taught concepts into practice. Our MSc in Management is a full-time degree that lasts 12 months.

The practice track is a team project that allows you to work with one of our partner organisations to solve a real business challenge. You will apply the theory and skills you have learned to a practical issue and present your work to the company.

What you'll study

The MPM will give you the skills and capability to understand the theory and practice of public management and boost your performance as a manager.

Your studies will include:

  1. Three foundation courses that examine government and governing in modern societies, government and the economy, and policy and management practice.
  2. Four core courses–you'll study governance and public sector reform, and strategic and financial management. You'll also learn about planning and service delivery, human resources and monitoring and evaluation.
  3. A research project that leads to a report on a specific topic in public management.
  4. Three other courses–choose from a variety of courses according to your interests and career goals—like public sector law, economics, policy analysis or politics and philosophy.

The Diploma programme requires you do seven foundation and core courses and one more course of your choice, and Certificate students do four foundation and core courses.

How you'll learn

Courses are delivered in a Block, Intensive or Weekly format.

Block format

These courses have 24 hours of structured class time, which are broken up into three separate days of six hours each. There are also six hours of structured class work, which may be delivered face-to-face or online.

Intensive format

These courses have a minimum of 24 hours' class time. They are delivered over four consecutive days, or two blocks of two consecutive days with about six weeks in between. Attendance is required on all course days.

Weekly format

Weekly courses take place during the standard university trimester periods. These courses are held weekly in the evening.

You can check the course schedules in the School of Government Postgraduate Prospectus. Whatever format your course is delivered in, you need to attend all of the classes to pass and to get the most out of your study.

Study while you work

The block format of the classes means you can fit your study commitments around your work and home life. If you're struggling at any time, just let us know—we want your study to be a success.

Workload

If you are studying fulltime you can expect a workload of 40–45 hours a week for much of the year. Part-time students doing two courses per trimester will need to do around 20–25 hours of work a week. Make sure you take this into account if you are working full-time.

You can estimate your workload by adding up the number of points you'll be doing. One point is roughly equal to 10–12 hours work.

Duration

You can usually complete the Master of Public Management in three or four trimesters over two years, when studying full time. If you're studying part time, the MPM can usually be completed in six trimesters over three years.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Public Management can usually be completed in four trimesters over two years.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Public Management is usually completed in two trimesters over one year.

If you're wanting a career or are already working in the government and non-government sectors, a Public Management qualification is a good choice.
