This course is specifically designed for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals who wish to undertake part-time study to prepare them to become a non-medical prescriber. Nurses and midwives will be awarded the NMC recorded qualification (V300 Independent and Supplementary Prescribing) and allied health professionals will be awarded an annotation with the HPC as a Supplementary Prescriber.

You can expect to study four modules:

•Pharmacology and therapeutics for prescribers (30 credits) will prepare students to understand and apply the principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics directly related to prescribing practice. Practitioners will have the opportunity to critically analyse evidence based practice including risk assessment and management and to synthesise information relating to their own area of practice.
•Outline content includes: pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics; adverse drug reactions; numeracy; safe principles of prescribing; anatomy and physiology across the life span.
•Professional, legal and ethical issues for prescribers (15 credits) focuses on critically evaluating and synthesising ideas from the evidence in relation to the legal, ethical and professional issues implicit in non-medical prescribing decision making and consultations. Outline content includes: legislation and policies related to prescribing; accountability and responsibility for assessment, diagnosis and prescribing independently and within the multi-disciplinary team; patient safety in supervising, managing and evaluating prescribing decisions; prescribing effectively within a finite prescribing budget.
•Applied prescribing in the clinical context (15 credits) aims to critically evaluate the skills required for a comprehensive consultation for safe effective prescribing. In addition it is designed to promote synthesis of ideas influential in prescribing decision making. Outline content includes: appraisal of self and others regarding consultation skills in achieving medicines adherence; external pressures impacting on prescribing; different management options used to treat patients.
•Prescribing in practice for nurses and midwives / allied health professionals (0 credits) prepares students to prescribe from the British National Formulary as both independent and supplementary prescribers for nurses and midwives or as a supplementary prescriber for allied health professionals. Outline content includes: application of theory to practice; rationale for prescribing decisions; numeracy skills, writing prescriptions; prescribing in a range of scenarios. All practice experiences and practice outcomes for the whole course are based within this module.
Teaching and assessment
Our student-centred and enquiry-based approach to learning incorporates a wide variety of learning and teaching strategies, including; case studies, scenarios, small group work, action learning sets, workshops, pod casts, reflection, student presentations, supervised consultations with service users in practice and clinically focused tutorials. An essential part of the course will take place in practice settings under the guidance of a Designated Medical Practitioner, facilitated by your personal tutor. Students will also be supported by a designated qualified nurse prescriber, lead midwife for education, or supplementary prescriber for allied health, who will take up the role of preceptor at the end of the course.

Expertise
Our course team have a wide range of experience in non-medical prescribing provision. A key strength is that most are, or have been, independent and or supplementary prescribers from primary and secondary care in nursing, midwifery and pharmacy practice. The external examiner is also experienced in non-medical prescribing.

This course consists of three modules of study to gain the professional and academic awards. You will study pharmacotherapeutics, the study of all aspects of drugs, how they work and interact and the physiological basis to prescribing. You will explore the legal and ethical basis of sound prescribing in practice, within the professional and statutory frameworks. You will also become proficient in physical and mental health assessment. You will compile a professional workbook to demonstrate the acquistion of prescribing competencies, and spend time in clinical practice refining and developing prescribing and health assessment skills. You will be mentored by an experienced doctor and gain experience with other non-medical prescribers during the course of the programme.

This is an exciting programme of study which, on successful completion, allows students to seek to have their qualification recorded by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and to practise as an Independent Nurse Prescriber (V300).

Prescribing by nurses has evolved to offer better access to medicines and to optimise the skills and expertise of nurses in the provision of care. Where appropriate, nurses are able to complete episodes of care, whilst also enhancing their role within the team.

Patients evaluate their experience of Nurse Independent prescribing positively.

Students frequently report that the course is probably the most challenging they have undertaken since their pre-registration programme, but also the most rewarding. Students report positively on the organisation of the course and on the support provided for their preparation as prescribers. The programme delivery is designed to provide opportunities for students to receive feedback to support the development of their work throughout the programme. We consider all student feedback and work with this to enhance the student experience and outcomes.

Course outline

The programme is a multi-professional, part-time course which will prepare nurses, midwives, health visitors for a role as an Independent Nurse Prescriber (V300).

In accordance with the requirements identified by the NMC, the programme comprises 26 theory days, of which some may be attended more flexibly online, and 12 practice days (90 hours equivalent) in clinical practice preparing to be a prescriber.

This 40 credit programme at level 7 comprises two 10 credits modules (one at level 6) and one 20 credit module focusing on the principles which underpin prescribing practice and pharmacology.

On successful completion of the programme students will be able to:
-Recognise and manage clinical complexity, consult effectively with patients and carers, assessing their need for medicines, taking account of their wishes and conducting, as appropriate, a relevant physical examination.
-Demonstrate clarity of reasoning in relation to the relevance of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and apply the knowledge to their own prescribing practice.
-Interrogate the benefits and demonstrate how they will prescribe safely, appropriately and cost effectively, justifying the local application of legal and professional frameworks for accountability and responsibility in relation to prescribing.
-Synthesise sources of information, advice and support, explaining how they will use them in prescribing practice, taking into account evidence based practice, national/local guidelines and the roles of others who are involved in prescribing practice.
-Critically debate factors which impact on prescribing in a public health context and which necessitate therapeutic monitoring and modification and practice based change.
-Demonstrate through the interface of theory and practice they can take an appropriate history taking, undertake a clinical assessment and make an appropriate diagnosis having considered the legal, cognitive, emotional and physical differences between children and adults.

Graduate destinations

Non-medical prescribing is offered as stand-alone provision, but can also contribute to a postgraduate award.

For example, you could combine successful completion of the Non-Medical Prescribing award with the 20-credit module HPHG7024 Medicines: Therapeutics and Pharmacology for a Postgraduate Certificate Practice Development with option to transfer the credits into a Postgraduate Diploma or MSc Practice Development.

Other admission requirements

All entry and selection criteria must be met in full prior to programme commencement:
-Evidence of prior successful study at level 6 and within 6 years of the course start date.
-A fully completed application form confirming.

We recommend that applicants have successfully completed at least one academic module at Level 7 prior to applying for this programme at Level 7.

-At least two years' clinical experience in the area in which prescribing will take place.
-Identification of the need to prescribe by the line manager, and access to a prescribing budget on successful completion of the course.
-A Designated Medical Practitioner (DMP) who will act as mentor.
-The DMP mentor must meet the standards required by the Department of Health.
-Clinical governance arrangements agreed by the Non-Medical Prescribing Lead.
-For applicants within Cumbria and Lancashire, evidence of attainment of a minimum mark of 80% in the pre-course numeracy assessment.
-A copy of a satisfactory Enhanced DBS check obtained by the applicant’s employer, and issued within three years of the course start date.

The Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) team at London South Bank University (LSBU) has a long history of delivering high-quality ANP education, initially with the first ANP programme in the UK based at the RCN Institute, London and subsequently at LSBU. LSBU has provided ANP education at both degree and masters level in the past. However developments in policy related to advanced nursing practice have increasingly emphasised the need for masters level education to inform and underpin nursing activities at an advanced level.

You will initially enrol for the postgraduate ANP award programme, which comprises of a prescribed sequence of five compulsory modules and the Non Medical Prescribing programme. The curriculum for this award has been shaped by the Department of Health (2010) position statement on Advanced Level Nursing which is the current English policy standard for ANPs. It has been mapped against its four themes of "Clinical/direct care practice", "Leadership and collaborative practice", "Improving quality and developing practice" and "Developing self and others". This ensures that graduates from our Postgraduate Diploma ANP programme (PgDip ANP) will be able to demonstrate all of the elements that are detailed in this statement and are therefore benchmarked against the current policy standards for advanced nursing practice in England.

This course is accredited by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Accreditation unit. This is the only quality marker for ANP programmes in the UK and demonstrates that our programme has been rigorously evaluated against 15 standards and associated criteria (RCN, 2012) and judged to prepare ANPs to an advanced level commensurate with the RCN guidance on ANPs (RCN, 2012). The sequencing of modules is designed to support advancement of clinical knowledge and skills during the programme.

The programme incorporates the Non Medical Prescribing programme for those students who are not already independent prescribers.

You have the option to exit at the end of the PgDip ANP or can choose to progress to gain the MSc award by undertaking a dissertation. You do not have to make this decision until year two or three depending on your rate of progress through the postgraduate diploma programme. You have up to five years to complete the Postgraduate Diploma. Graduates would be required to enrol to undertake the Dissertation within two years of completing the PgDip ANP. Those choosing to progress to the MSc ANP award have six years overall to complete this award from point of registration.

This clinically-focused programme is a "generic" ANP preparation programme. While it is offered to nurses working in any setting and with any client group it should be noted that the curriculum is designed to develop a "generalist" approach at advanced level. In practice this means that you will be expected to gain substantial experience in and demonstrate advanced level knowledge and clinical competence in relation to assessment, clinical reasoning, formulation of appropriate differential diagnosis, diagnostic decision making and initiation or delivery of appropriate timely evidence-based care for patients experiencing problems related to the following: head, neck, ENT, skin, eyes, lymph nodes, respiratory system, cardiac and peripheral vascular systems, gastrointestinal system, musculoskeletal system, neurological system (including cranial nerves), and mental health.

The programme is therefore not appropriate for nurses working within a specialist area who want to continue to further their learning and career within that specialty. Modules

The RCN ANP standards (2012) and DH (2010) Advanced Nursing position statement are central to the design of the curricula and staging of the modules. Key material is introduced, further developed, revisited and consolidated in a spiral approach, with knowledge and skills pertaining to all of the ANP domains and competencies taught, developed and assessed during the programme. All modules carry 20 credits at masters level (Level 7) other than the "Physiological Principles for ANPs" module which is provided at degree level (Level 6) to develop key foundation knowledge to underpin subsequent applied patho-physiology and pharmacology educational input.

The first two modules on the course are:
- Physiological Principles for ANPs
- Advanced Assessment Skills for Clinical Practice

These, along with the Non Medical Prescribing (NMP) programme, can be taken on a stand-alone single module basis and then credited into the ANP course within a two year time frame.

The other modules are listed below and these can only be taken once a student is enrolled on the programme:
- Clinical Reasoning and Applied Pathophysiology for ANPs
- Leadership and Service Development for ANPs
- Managing Clinical Complexity for ANPs

Non Medical Prescribing

The PgDip ANP includes the requirement for you to become an Independent Prescriber by successfully completing the Non Medical Prescribing (NMP) programme. This ensures that graduates from the programme will be able to fully meet patient's needs and service demands. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) stipulates the rules for delivery of the NMP programme, which dictate that this must be taken as a distinct entity with a separate application process. At LSBU the NMP programme is available as a Graduate Certificate (60 credits, Level 6) and a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits, Level 7). Those on the PgDip ANP programme who have not already successfully completed the NMP programme or equivalent, will undertake the full NMP programme at Level 7 and 20 credits will be used towards the PgDip ANP award. A separate occurrence of the NMP programme will be provided for all ANP students from January to July each year. If you have previously completed the Non Medical Prescribing programme (or equivalent) at master's level then you will not be required to repeat this component. However, those who have previously completed the NMP programme (or equivalent) at degree level will be required to make up 20 credits at masters level by undertaking an optional module of choice. The School offers a wide variety of modules including ones that focus on assessing and managing children's minor illness, mentorship and developing research or specialist skills. Alternatively you could use master's level credit from prior learning at LSBU or study undertaken at another university.

Employability

To date we have prepared over 1,000 ANPs who have gone on to enjoy excellent employment opportunities. For example our graduates are now making a positive impact on service delivery and patient care in general practices, walk-in centres, urgent care centres, minor injury units,A&E departments, refugee/asylum seekers/homeless projects, elderly care facilities, 'out of hours' developments, rapid response services, prison services, intermediate care teams, generalist and specialist acute services,critical-care and ITU, outreach initiatives that cross traditional healthcare boundaries, and innovative community-based services. Some are now lead nurses within social enterprises, partners in general practices, nurse representatives on commissioning boards, community matrons and nurse consultants.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is provided by experienced qualified ANPs, many of whom work regularly in clinical practice. A variety of student-centred, teaching strategies are used including skills demonstrations and supervised, practical workshops and use of online learning resources. High quality student skills development and supervision is provided with a one teacher to 15 student ratio.

E-learning complements face-to-face delivery for all modules. Blended learning is used as a teaching and learning strategy alongside classroom attendance in modules to enhance your clinical and professional development and support you to overcome the challenges that ANP's face in the workplace. You therefore need use of a computer and efficient internet access between classroom sessions. For those who are anxious about their ability to study and write at master's level will be supported with sessions on study skills, academic writing, formative feedback on their writing and one to one tutorials.

Practice based learning

Focused practice based learning activities are an integral part of the programme to complement classroom learning and develop your clinical and professional scope of practice to an advanced level. Evidence of clinical development and completion of certified clinical hours, form one of the components of assessment for the clinical modules. Requirements for skills development and practice based learning extend beyond the University semesters to include the summer periods. You are therefore strongly advised to negotiate for your study day to continue throughout the calendar year.

Learning within the work place is supported through identification of a doctor/qualified ANP to act as your "Practice Facilitator" to initially supervise and subsequently support your clinical development. Details of these activities and the role of the Practice Facilitator are provided in the Practice Based Learning Handbook which accompanies the programme and are discussed during a specific session for students and their Practice Facilitators within the Orientation programme at the start of the course.

Assessments

A range of assessment methods are used including health needs assessment leading to development of a service proposal, clinical case analysis, completion of certified clinical hours, a clinically focused portfolio and practical assessments including OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) Guided practice-based learning takes place in the your own work place, supported by a visit from an ANP Mentor.

Attendance

The attendance requirements for this programme are greater those normally associated with a traditional post-graduate course; we use additional study days / blocks to develop the professional skills that are integral to the pathway. The nature of this programme means that those who miss any sessions will lose out on their learning experience. Academic Regulations stipulate that students who miss more than two sessions within a module will not normally be eligible to continue to finish the module. Please consider this requirement when you plan to undertake the programme.

COURSE OUTLINE

The Advanced Certificate Non Medical Prescribing prepares nurses/ midwives, pharmacists and relevant allied health professionals to practice within current non medical prescribing legislation. It is aimed at experienced practitioners who wish to enhance their clinical practice by prescribing as Independent Prescribers from the British National Formulary (BNF) and/or as Supplementary Prescribers using clinical management plans according to relevant professional standards as stipulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The generic nature of the course enables the student to apply the theory directly to his or her own practice area or speciality.

On successful completion of the course and subsequent registration with the appropriate regulatory body:
-Nurses and midwives will receive the V300 Independent and Supplementary Prescribing entry to the NMC register.
-Pharmacists will receive a ‘Practice Certificate in Independent Prescribing’ which can be used to have their entry in the Register of Pharmaceutical Chemists annotated (GPhC).
-Allied Health Professionals (Physiotherapists) will receive a statement of competence to practice as an Independent and Supplementary prescriber from the HCPC.

All successful candidates will receive an Advanced Certificate Non Medical Prescribing.

This course is offered as a double module and attracts 40 credits at level 6 (NU3023) or 40 credits at level 7 (NU4023). Students may only undertake one of these modules. The course is delivered twice a year, commencing September (normally Thursdays) and January (normally Wednesdays). This course is offered as a combination of taught study days within the university and via directed study using the university’s resources, a Non Medical Prescribing Web Resource and the university’s on-line Learning Environment (Blackboard). It can be taken as a free-standing module or as part of undergraduate or postgraduate programmes.

The course is designed for experienced practitioners and the use of student centred teaching and learning strategies is central to the course design. The sessions are delivered by a very experienced multiprofessional team via a range of approaches including: lectures, group discussions, case studies, seminars, tutorials, on-line Blackboard materials and an interactive elearning Web Resource. In addition, the opportunity afforded by shared multiprofessional learning will enhance your educational experience.

Student support from module supervisors will be ongoing throughout the programme, which includes direct contact and via email and telephone.

Assessment of the course is in four parts, all of which must be passed in order to successfully complete the course. These are the production of a 4000 word portfolio of professional development in prescribing practice, written examination, Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and achievement of competence in practice. Students who undertake the level 7 module (NU4023) will also have a viva voce with the OSCE.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Non-Medical Prescribing aims to prepare nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals to practice within current non-medical prescribing legislation.

There will be two cohorts per year (subject to sufficient interest and professional body approval), starting in March and September each year. The Spring cohort will run every Wednesday from March to November (No lectures during August) and the Autumn cohort will be taught every Tuesday from September to the following March. The programme comprises one 60 credit module, SHGM21 Non-medical Prescribing. This will be tailored to the relevant professional body requirements (NMC, HCPC and GPhC).

The programme is taught at the St. David’s Park site in Carmarthen. Teaching takes place one day a week over the academic year.

GradCert/PgCert Non-Medical Prescribing

This short professional programme validated by the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC), General Pharmaceutical Council (GPC) and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) prepares qualified nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists and podiatrists for independent prescribing and radiographers for supplementary prescribing within a specified field of clinical practice.

Conversion Course for Supplementary Prescribers

This short professional course will provide Physiotherapists and Podiatrists who have already completed the Non-Medical Prescribing course and are annotated with the Health Care Professional Council (HCPC) as a Supplementary Prescriber to prepare for annotation as an Independent Prescriber. You will have been practicing as a Supplementary Prescriber in the area for which you intend to prescribe independently for at least six months. The course involves two University based study days followed by two days of self-directed supervised clinical practice with a designated Medical Practitioner (DMP).

In accordance with the requirements identified by the HCPC, the programme comprises 26 theory days, of which some may be attended more flexibly online, and 12 practice days (90 hours equivalent) in clinical practice preparing to be a prescriber.

This 40 credit programme at level 7 comprises two 10 credits modules (one at level 6) and one 20 credit module focusing on the principles which underpin prescribing practice and pharmacology.

The Postgraduate Certificate for Non-Medical Prescribing consists of two modules totalling 60 CATS credits:

Advanced History Taking and Assessment (20 level 7 credits) - Semester 1 Mondays, Semester 2 Tuesdays. This is a practice-based module enabling you to develop the skills and knowledge to take a comprehensive patient history and conduct a thorough physical and psychosocial assessment. It will significantly enhance your assessment skills and ability to accurately describe the patient/client’s history and examination findings using appropriate terminology, reporting deviations from normal in a succinct manner to colleagues within the multidisciplinary team. This module must be successfully completed before commencing the Non-Medical Prescribing (v300) module or the Independent and Supplementary Prescribing for AHP's (v300) module.

Non-Medical Prescribing (v300) 40 level 7 credits - Semester 1&2 or Semester 2&3 Thursdays (and Friday week 12). This blended learning course provides a programme of preparation for registered nurses and midwives to prescribe safely and competently as an Independent and Supplementary prescriber. The course introduces pharmacology, legal and ethical prescribing, interpersonal skills and quality assurance aspects of prescribing. These are underpinned by reflection on your own experience, evaluation of your own performance and application of theory to practice. PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The syllabus for the MSc in Medical Physics is designed to provide the knowledge, skills and experience required for a modern graduate medical physicist, placing more emphasis than many other courses on topics beyond ionising radiation (X-rays and radiotherapy).

Examples of other topics include magnetic resonance imaging and the use of lasers in medicine.

You will learn the theoretical foundations underpinning modern imaging and treatment modalities, and will gain a set of experimental skills essential in a modern medical physicist’s job.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The primary aim of the programme is to provide a high quality postgraduate level qualification in Physics that is fully compatible with the spirit and the letter of the Bologna Accord.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills, qualities and other attributes in the following areas:
-Concepts and theories: Students will be able to demonstrate a systematic understanding of the concepts, theories and ideas of a specialized field in physics in Radiation Physics through the taught elements of one of the component MSc programmes MSc in Medical Physics.
-Instrumentation and materials: Students will understand the operation, function and performance of the key radiation detection devices and technologies or principles of the physics relevant to applied radiation physics, in particular medical applications.
-Methods and best practices: Students will become fully acquainted with the scientific methods and best practices of physics and exposed to a specialized field described in the handbook documents of the validated MSc in Medical Physics.

In the second year of the programme the outcomes are linked closely to a unique 8-month research project (two months preparation and research skills development, 5 months research, and 1 month reporting), students will apply their acquired research skills to an individual research project in a Research Group.

During the first two months of year two of the programme students will further extend their self-confidence in their practical, analytical and programming abilities; their ability to communicate; realise that they can take on responsibility for a task in the Research Group and see it through.

An important element is the assignment of responsibility for a substantial research project which is aimed to be of a standard suitable for publication in an appropriate professional journal.

It is expected that the student will approach the project in the manner of a new Research Student, e.g. be prepared to work beyond the normal working day on the project, input ideas, demonstrate initiative and seek out relevant information.

Thereby the students will acquire proficiency in research skills, including (but not limited to) careful planning, time scheduling, communication with colleagues and at workshops, keeping a detailed notebook, designing and testing equipment, taking and testing data and analysis.

The dissertation required at the end of the Research Project has the objective of encouraging students to write clearly and express their understanding of the work, thereby developing the required skills of scientific writing.

During the Research Project as a whole it is expected that the students will further develop communication skills through participation in group meetings, preparation of in-house reports, giving oral presentations and show initiative in acquiring any necessary new skills.

The oral presentation at the end of the Research Project is a chance to show their oral presentation skills and ability to think independently.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The syllabus for the MSc in Medical Physics is designed to provide the knowledge, skills and experience required for a modern graduate medical physicist, placing more emphasis than many other courses on topics beyond ionising radiation (X-rays and radiotherapy).

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

This programme is studied full-time over two academic years. It consists of ten taught modules and a dissertation project. EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The primary aim of the programme is to provide a high quality postgraduate level qualification in Physics that is fully compatible with the spirit and the letter of the Bologna Accord.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills, qualities and other attributes in the following areas:
-Concepts and theories: Students will be able to demonstrate a systematic understanding of the concepts, theories and ideas of a specialized field in physics in Radiation Physics through the taught elements of one of the component MSc programmes MSc in Medical Physics.
-Instrumentation and materials: Students will understand the operation, function and performance of the key radiation detection devices and technologies or principles of the physics relevant to applied radiation physics, in particular medical applications.
-Methods and best practices: Students will become fully acquainted with the scientific methods and best practices of physics and exposed to a specialized field described in the handbook documents of the validated MSc in Medical Physics.

During their 60-credit Research Project students will gain further practical, analytical or programming abilities through working on a more extended investigation. This may be an experiment- or modelling-based project, for which the student will be encouraged to propose and set in place original approaches.

The dissertation required at the end of the Research Project has the objective of encouraging students to write clearly and express their understanding of the work, thereby developing the required skills of scientific writing.

-Knowledge of physics, technology and processes in the subject of the course and the ability to apply these in the context of the course
-Ability to research problems involving innovative practical or theoretical work
-Ability to formulate ideas and response to problems, refine or expand knowledge in response to specific ideas or problems and communicate these ideas and responses
-Ability to evaluate/argue alternative solutions and strategies independently and assess/report on own/others work with justification

Intellectual / cognitive skills

Degree Information

The programme covers all forms of ionising and non-ionising radiation commonly used in medicine and applies it to the areas of imaging and treatment. The programme involves Master's level modules chosen from a wide range offered by the department and a research project. Good performance in the MRes will lead to entry into the 2nd year of the Doctoral Training Programme where the research project is continued.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
