The IOA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control is widely recognised as the educational qualification of choice for professional practitioners in acoustics, noise and vibration. It can help you securing a career in related disciplines including environmental health, mechanical engineering, building services engineering, architecture, urban planning, health and safety and the music industry.

The Diploma provides sufficient specialist academic training to satisfy the educational requirements for membership of the Institute of Acoustics, the most highly regarded professional membership in the acoustics, noise and vibration industry. The Diploma has been taught since 1975 and is well-known for providing a high level training in acoustics and noise control.

This is a professionally focused qualification and practical work is an essential part of the course, giving you direct experience of modern practices and measurement equipment.

The course runs part-time (one day a week) over one year, so you can manage your studies around existing work commitments. You'll have access to our extensive on-site and electronic library and Learning Resource Centre to support your learning.

LSBU has been offering courses in Acoustics for over 35 years, and houses the only centre for study in the South-East with full-size reverberant and anechoic chambers as well as an exceptionally well equipped and staffed laboratory, with access to the very latest instrumentation and technology.

Members of the teaching team are all highly-experienced and award-winning. In addition, all are actively involved in research and consultancy, which enables staff to draw on the latest industry developments in both lectures and practical work.

Successful completion of IOA Diploma exempts you from five out of eight modules of the LSBU MSc Environmental and Architectural Acoustics, if you decide to continue studying onto Masters-level.

The GPA Module involves around 120 study hours including coursework and tutorials and each Specialist Module about half of this study time.

Teaching and learning

Students learn through a combination of tutorials, lectures, and off-site visits. The Laboratory module consists entirely of hands-on experiments, and the Project module is practical investigative work, conducted under the supervision of a tutor where necessary.

Members of the teaching team are all highly-experienced and award-winning lecturers. Senior IOA Diploma teacher Bob Peters is a member of the IOA education committee and author of book Acoustics and Noise Control (3rd edition), widely used by students studying the Diploma.

This course provides the specialist academic training needed to satisfy the educational requirements for corporate membership of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) and it is recognised as a valid qualification towards achievement a Chartered Engineer status (CEng).

The Diploma is well regarded in other countries including the USA, Canada and Australia.

Graduates are particularly sought after in the acoustics, noise and vibration control related industries. This course is perfect for you if you're looking for a specialist qualification as a professional practitioner in acoustics. You'll become a member of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) which will help to set you apart from other professionals in this field.

It also means that if you went on to further study, for example the MSc Applied Acoustics course, you could miss out the Postgraduate Certificate level and go straight onto the Postgraduate Diploma.

The course only takes one year to complete and you'll study on a Tuesday afternoon and evening starting in September. The examinations are held in June and you'll need to complete a project which usually takes place over the summer months.

Because the course is part time it means you can fit it around your work and life commitments, but if you are in employment you'll need to ensure that you can come in to Derby on a Tuesday afternoon to study.

You'll be taught by a dedicated and friendly team who are experienced acousticians with most having full membership of the IOA. And you'll study at the leading centre in the Midlands for this course.

Everyone must take the following modules:

You'll be assessed by both coursework and examination. Coursework will include laboratory reports and a small number of assignments set by the IOA.
The General Principles of Acoustics module provides a foundation for further study and deals with the nature and behaviour of sound and vibration, its measurement, response of humans to sound and vibration, and basic noise control engineering. The project is an opportunity for you to carry out an individual study in the area of acoustics.

About the course:

If you're a health and safety manager or work within health and safety, this course is for you. It's also increasingly popular with people working in noise consultancies.

The course will start on a Monday and will take five days to complete. You'll take a practical exam on the Friday. There's also a written exam that is normally held on a Friday about two weeks after the course.

We've divided the course into six key areas:

Basic concepts of noise

You'll receive an overview of the basic definitions and principles of sound, noise indices and units, and learn how to undertake basic calculations involving decibels.

Measurement and instrumentation for noise assessment

You'll go through the basic features and properties of an integrating sound level meter, the calibration of meters and the properties of a dosimeter.

Noise exposure assessment

Taught by experts with strong research and industry backgrounds, MSc Applied Acoustics offers students the chance to gain hands-on experience with the latest measurement, simulation and modelling technology. Students also study relevant scientific principles such as how humans respond to sound, acoustic physics, and how sound interacts with our environment.

We have excellent links with the Institute of Acoustics (IoA) and the Association of Noise Consultants, as well as a number of commercial companies across the sector. These include KP Acoustics, with whom we have a formal partnership for work placement and mentoring. The course has also been designed to meet the requirements for professional IoA registration.

To aid study and help perfect techniques, students have full access to the University’s laboratory and studio facilities. Students will be able to undertake acoustic measurement and laboratory projects using a wide range of test equipment such as sound level meters, a 16-channel data acquisition system, head and torso simulators, a laser vibrometer and ambisonic microphones. Students will also have access to cutting-edge simulation and modelling software, including MATLAB, NI Labview, CadnaA, CATT Acoustic, and EASE.

The University also offers access to specialist facilities for the testing and demonstration of acoustic and electro-acoustic principles, including a hemi-anechoic chamber, audio isolation booths for sound recording and audiometric testing, and the University’s own digital 3D cinema.

Teaching, learning and assessment -
The course is taught through classroom seminars/lectures, laboratory sessions and independent learning, as well as your supervised research project. While some laboratory sessions entail working in a group, all assessment is individual.

There are a number of opportunities for work experience with professional partners and contacts, as well as through the University’s own Solent Acoustics consultancy.

Past students have worked on a range of projects, including for Truck Festival, Isle of Wight Festival, Westminster City Council and KP Acoustics.

This is a professionally focused applied degree and practical work is an essential part of the course, giving you direct experience of modern measurement equipment and techniques. Over the past decade a very high proportion our students have found employment in an acoustics related industry, and one or two outstanding students per year go on to undertake research on our sponsored PhD programme.

Completion of the MSc satisfies the academic requirement for corporate membership of the Institute of Acoustics. The process of attaining Chartered Engineer status is offered through the Institute o fAcoustics or the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

Acousticians work in a great variety of industries and environments and this profession is in high demand, especially in London, thanks to the wide range and speed of new infrastructure development.

Architectural acoustics:

Many types of new buildings need careful acoustic design to make them sound good, to protect them from nearby noise sources, to make them productive and pleasant places to live or work in and to make them commercially successful. This is especially true for places like concert halls, but equally applicable to universities, residential buildings, leisure centres and many others. Day-to-day tasks could include: design meetings with architects and other engineers, noise surveys of existing and new sites, design using computer and physical models, communication of the design to the client and design team, project management, site supervision and commissioning of the finished projects. Environmental noise:

Noise is a major issue for society: 80 million EU citizens live in unacceptably noisy areas. Environmental health officers consider noise in planning new developments, such as housing affected by noise, or new noisy activities, and enforcement of existing noise concerns including the sources of complaints from the public. Consultants in environmental noise work in small specialists firms or large multinational consultancies, including engineering firms. Junior staff measure noise and use computer models to predict noise levels from new developments such as roads, railways and industrial plants. As such it is also an opportunity for candidates from a different Engineering background to develop key Mechanical Engineering knowledge and skills required for their professional development. A key objective of the programme is to be an accredited route to becoming Chartered Engineer.

This programme makes use of masters-level courses in the Energy Sciences and Manufacture & Design complemented with specialist courses from relevant MSc courses offered by the institute. We have seen a growing need for an advanced mechanical engineering programme at the request of applicants, and our industry partners. This programme has been specifically developed to meet this need and to encourage students of this field into further learning.

The Scottish Funding Council has made available 20 scholarships covering fees only to students with Scottish backgrounds. 6 of these places are reserved for applicants to this programme in the first instance. The MSc Acoustics has two pathways: Audio Applications and Environmental Applications.

- Audio pathway -

The generation, manipulation and reproduction of high quality audio signals are core elements of the rapidly expanding communication, entertainment and sound engineering industry. The audio pathway aims to train graduates in the acoustic aspects of audio such as digital signal processing, microphone and loudspeaker design, architectural acoustics and sound reproduction.

- Environmental pathway -

The environmental pathway is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to work in environmental acoustics, including environmental noise consultancy, noise control in industry and acoustic engineering research.
The course is accredited by the Institute of Acoustics which provides external validation of the course quality.

Format

The majority of teaching and learning takes place through tutorial and seminar groups. Assessment is generally in the form of assignments, which improve problem solving and other skills as well as providing a strong background in the subject area.The Acoustics MSc course offers a variety of flexible formats, including full- and part-time attending modes, and by distance learning over two years. Those considering part-time study should bear in mind that the courses are intensive, and that generally, we advise that part-time means half time, i.e. you would need to allocate half the week to the MSc, 19 working hours.

Distance learning and attending students benefit from the supply of a range of high-quality teaching materials, text books and software. Interaction with students is face-to-face wherever practical, but we also use web-based learning support packages (databases of materials, discussion boards etc.) to support the whole cohort.

The Audio Pathway on this course is designed to train graduates to meet a growing demand for audio skills in industry, and also to enable employees to reach their full potential. This postgraduate course has been used as in-service training by a number of UK and global companies (e.g. mobile telecoms). While one naturally thinks of mobile phone design as belonging to 'telecommunications', there are considerable audio engineering challenges in designing good quality sound from the small transducers used in confined spaces, often in the presence of considerable background noise. Also, increasing markets exist for sophisticated audio systems in the home (surround sound cinema), at work (Internet conferencing facilities, virtual environments) and in transport (car audio). This masters course has been devised to meet this growing demand.

The audio acoustics industry is diverse. It includes major firms with 'core' audio-related market share such as Philips, Sony, Dolby, B&O and KEF. Many other businesses employ specialists in acoustics: Nokia, Bentley (and Ford, Nissan etc) to name a few. Building design and architectural acoustics needs specialist engineering consultants looking at room configurations and surface treatments, noise ingress and egress, sound reinforcement system design and so on, and a very wide variety of companies (Arup Acoustics are one large example in this area) employ graduates from our courses. Students also go on to study for a higher degree by research, here at Salford or elsewhere.

The Environmental Pathway meets the needs of people wanting a career dealing with building design, noise and its control. With noise being a significant problem worldwide, there is significant demand from companies wanting to employ graduates understanding acoustics. AIM OF COURSE

Mobile radio encompasses a diversity of communications requirements and technical solutions including cellular mobile radio and data systems (eg GSM, GPRS, 3G, 4G, WiMax) and Personal Mobile Radio as well as various indoor radio systems including Bluetooth, WIFI, Wireless Indoor Networks (WINs or LANs). This MSc course aims to provide industry with graduates who possess a thorough knowledge both of actual modern radio systems and of the fundamental principles and design constraints embodied in those systems.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course spans 50 weeks of full-time study and is divided into teaching and project modules. The teaching block is based on 6 modular courses, each comprising approximately 40 hours of lectures (or lecture equivalents) with additional directed study and practical work. All of these modules are augmented by specific case studies, applications and tutorials.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Radio Systems Engineering
A radio receiver design is analysed in detail so that design compromises may be understood. Topics include gain, selectivity, noise figure, dynamic range, intermodulation, spurious output, receiver structures, mixers, oscillators, PLL synthesis, filters and future design trends. This course also includes familiarisation with industry - standard design packages. Introduces key concepts in conventional and novel antenna design. It incovers the following topics: basic antenna structures (eg wire, reflector, patch and helical antennas); design considerations for fixed and mobile communication systems; phased array antennas; conformal and volume arrays; array factor and pattern multiplication; mutual coupling; isolated and embedded element patterns; active match; true time delay systems; pattern synthesis techniques; adaptive antennas; adaptive beamforming and nulling.

Mobile Radio Systems and Propagation
The aim of this module is to investigate the nature of radio propagation in mobile radio environments. This will be achieved through the examination of several modern mobile radio systems. The effects of the propagation environment will also be considered.

Spectrum Management and Utilization
The electromagnetic spectrum is a finite resource which has to be properly managed. This module will address issues related to spectrum management. Topics covered will include: spectrum as a resource; space, time and bandwidth; international regulation organisations and control methods; definitions of spectrum utilisation and spectrum utilisation efficiency; spectrum-consuming properties of radio systems; protection ratio; frequency dependent rejection and the F-D curve; spectrum management tools, models and databases; spectrally-efficient techniques; efficient use of the spectrum.

Electromagnetic Compatability (EMC)
This module provides an introduction to EMC. Topics include fundamental EM interactions and how these give rise to potential incompatibilities between systems; current EMC legislation; test environments and test facilities.

Communication Systems and Digital Signal Processing
Students are introduced to a range of concepts underpinning communications system design. DSP topics include the theory and applications of: real-time DSP concepts/devices; specialist filter applications; A/D and D/A interface technology; review of Fourier/digital filter applicable to DSP; modem design: modulation, demodulation, synchronisation, equalisation; signal analysis and synthesis in time and frequency domain; hands-on experience of DSP tools and DSP applications.

Low Power/Low Voltage Design and VHDL
This module introduces the low power and low voltage design requirements brought about by increasingly small scale sizes of circuit integration. The module also introduces students to VHDL, which is widely used in industry today.

Design Exercise (RF Engineering)
This self-contained exercise aims to introduce the student to aspects of RF engineering, system specification, design and implementation. A design, such as a 2GHz receiver, will be taken through to practical implementation.

Radio Frequency and Microwave Measurements
This covers the theory of EM waves, propagation and scattering. It introduces the student to methods and instruments to measure important EM wave properties such as power and reflection coeffcients.

Active RF and Microwave Circuits
This module provides the student with an appreciation of; noise in microwave systems (basic theory, sources of noise, noise power and temperature, noise figure and measurement of noise); detectors and mixers (diodes and rectification, PIN diodes, single ended mixers, balanced mixers, intermodulation products); microwave amplifiers and oscillators (microwave bipolar transistors and FETs, gain and stability, power gain, design of single stage transistor amlifier, conjugate matching, low noise amplifier design and transistor oscillator design).

PROJECT MODULE
Following a course on research skills and project planning, each student carries out one major project from Easter to September focusing on a real industrial problem. Some projects are carried out ‘on-site’ with our local and national industrial partners. The MSc in environmental health sciences has been designed to allow graduates from a range of science and engineering disciplines to develop and extend knowledge in risk-based assessment and management of environmental influences on human health.

Environmental health is the assessment and management of environmental influences on human health. This includes the study of:
- environmental protection including control of air, water and land pollution
- food safety and hygiene including production, distribution and fitness for human consumption
- occupational health and safety including investigation and control of work-related accidents and ill health
- the built environment including homes, workplaces and public spaces

Environmental health work is important and highly worthwhile and many of our students are motivated by a desire to directly improve living and working conditions for a wide range of people.

You'll develop expertise in current methods for examining factors that affect human health, assessing and managing the risks involved, and meeting the challenges resulting from changes in the interaction between people and the environment.

The wide scope of environmental health sciences and the corresponding breadth of the degree reflect rapid technological progress. Environmental impact assessment, sustainable development, air, water and noise pollution are increasingly important and there is a pressing need for graduates with skills in these disciplines.

This course also provides an emphasis on teaching subjects that are relevant to contemporary problems faced by communities, government, industry and commercial organisations.

For example, professionals from outside Strathclyde work together with academic staff and students in the teaching of case studies of outbreaks of water-borne and food-borne diseases and also in urban and industrial air quality management.

You’ll study

Teaching is based on a core of conventional lectures and tutorials, complemented by group projects, laboratory classes, student-led seminars and fieldwork. The programme can be studied over one year full-time, two years part-time or up to five years through Open Access.

On the full-time programme, you’ll follow a core curriculum of eight classes and four optional class. Each class is taught for two to three hours per week over eight to 12 weeks.

Following successful completion of the taught component, you’ll undertake a dissertation from June to August.

Facilities

Our laboratory facilities are well-equipped for a wide range of chemical and biological measurements. High-technological instrumentation and space are available to investigate:
- marine and freshwater quality
- air quality
- solid and hazardous wastes
- environmental microbiology

Teaching staff

The course is delivered by staff from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. A brief profile of some members of the academic team is provided below:
- Dr Iain Beverland is the programme manager of the MSc in Environmental Health Sciences. He has research & teaching interests in the areas of air pollution control, environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment, & public/environmental health. Current research includes study of the effects of exposure to air pollution on human health, with a focus on traffic-related air pollution in urban areas.

- Dr Tara K Beattie has expertise in the field of public health and the management of water and solid waste. Her research interests include free-living protozoa and their potential to cause human disease.

- Dr Raymond Wong has research and teaching interests in the areas of food laws (EU and UK), policies and compliance; food poisoning, contamination and prevention; and food safety management systems.

- Dr Christine Switzer specialises in contaminant fate, transport and remediation with emphases on non-aqueous phase liquids and aggressive remediation technologies.

Additional information

Staff within the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering have engaged with developing Environmental Health training in Africa for almost 20 years.

Dr Tracy Morse, a graduate from the BSc (Hons) Environmental Health programme, was a recent winner of the title Strathclyder of the Year. Dr Morse won the title for her outstanding work as Project Manager of the University's Scotland Chikwawa Health Initiative. This is a scheme funded by the Scottish Government to improve maternal health and drive down infant mortality rates in four villages in Southern Malawi. Dr Morse is the Malawi-based coordinator of all the activities of the University's Malawi Millennium Project.

Open Access

Home students can also choose to study through Open Access. This is initially a non-graduating route. You register for one module at a time and have the option to build up credits eventually leading to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc. You can take up to five years to achieve the qualification.

This option is popular with students in employment, who may wish to undertake modules for Continuing Professional Development purposes.

Home students who do not meet the normal MSc entry requirements for this programme are welcome to apply through the Open Access route instead.
