About the course:

If you're a health and safety manager or work within health and safety, this course is for you. It's also increasingly popular with people working in noise consultancies.

The course will start on a Monday and will take five days to complete. You'll take a practical exam on the Friday. There's also a written exam that is normally held on a Friday about two weeks after the course.

We've divided the course into six key areas:

Basic concepts of noise

You'll receive an overview of the basic definitions and principles of sound, noise indices and units, and learn how to undertake basic calculations involving decibels.

Measurement and instrumentation for noise assessment

You'll go through the basic features and properties of an integrating sound level meter, the calibration of meters and the properties of a dosimeter.

Noise exposure assessment

You'll review measurement strategies, including the limitations of data collection and the calculation of personal noise exposure levels.

Hearing, hearing loss measurement and protection

You'll focus on the structure of the ear and the hearing mechanism, and review hearing defects and their social implications. You will also look at the types of hearing protectors, their limitations and advantages, and their performance.

Overview of legal aspects

It's vital to be up to date with legislation so you'll consider primary legislation (Health and Safety at Work Act 1974) and other regulations and codes of practice. You'll also review the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.

Noise reduction techniques

You'll look at the basic methods of noise control in the workplace, from its source to its transmission path and, finally, to the receiver.

LSBU has been offering courses in Acoustics for over 35 years, and houses the only centre for study with this level of facilities in the South-East of England,including full-size reverberant and anechoic chambers and an exceptionally well equipped and staffed laboratory, with access to the very latest instrumentation and technology.

This is a professionally focused applied degree and practical work is an essential part of the course, giving you direct experience of modern measurement equipment and techniques. The modules are directly relevant to the practice of acoustics, and also consider the broader aspects of investigation and control of the built environment. Half of teaching time is spent in the laboratory, and this focus is reflected in the balance between coursework and exams.

Individual modules can be taken separately as part of continuing professional development. For the final project module you'll devise and complete a piece of investigative work in an area of interest in considerable depth; the topic and scope of the project are selected with the guidance of an academic supervisor. For those applicants who already hold an Institute of Acoustics Diploma, there is an option of direct entry to the second year of the part-time Masters course.

Modules

- Acoustics laboratory
This module aims to convey the nature of sound and vibration with a considerable depth of knowledge through practical means, giving you an understanding of how to accurately measure sound, how sound behaves, and practical aspects of noise control. It introduces you to the basic principles of acoustics, familiarises you with modern sound level meters, measurement parameters and measurement techniques for noise surveys, room acoustics, sound absorption and sound insulation. You should be able to produce an accurate report to consultancy level which is critical of the laboratory, experiment, technique or instrumentation by comparison to the appropriate international standard.

- Architectural acoustics
The module provides specific acoustics knowledge as relevant to buildings and in particular rooms. The aims of the module are to gain understanding of room acoustics, measurement of room acoustic parameters and the various means of modelling the sound field in rooms across the frequency range.

- Measurement and control of sound
This module is designed to teach, at an advanced level, the physical mechanisms by which noise may be created, as well as to provide the analytic and practical skills required to control noise and vibration from a variety of sources. The module instils the knowledge of how to undertake noise and vibration measurements to meet specific acoustical standards and guidance.

- Subjective and environmental acoustics
Teaches, at an advanced level, the physical mechanisms by which the ear/brain interact to hear. The aims of the module are to: appreciate how human hearing deteriorates dependent on a number of variables; how legislation has developed to protect workers and how hearing protection can help under certain conditions; to appreciate the difference between subjective loudness and objective measurements; to learn how acoustic comfort criteria and legislation have been developed and applied to protect people in different environments.

- Environmental management
The module develops understanding of the way that human social and economic activities impact on the environment. The emphasis is on how managers can assess and influence the environmental impact of their particular organisation, with reference to key technologies and the political and legal constraints within which organisations must operate.

- Research methods
This module focuses on the essential communication and analytic skills required in research, including techniques for successful dissertation writing.

Over the past decade a very high proportion our students have found employment in an acoustics related industry, and one or two outstanding students per year go on to undertake research on our sponsored PhD programme.

Completion of the MSc satisfies the academic requirement for corporate membership of the Institute of Acoustics. The process of attaining Chartered Engineer status is offered through the Institute o fAcoustics or the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

Acousticians work in a great variety of industries and environments and this profession is in high demand, especially in London, thanks to the wide range and speed of new infrastructure development.

- Architectural acoustics:
Many types of new buildings need careful acoustic design to make them sound good, to protect them from nearby noise sources, to make them productive and pleasant places to live or work in and to make them commercially successful. This is especially true for places like concert halls, but equally applicable to universities, residential buildings, leisure centres and many others. Day-to-day tasks could include: design meetings with architects and other engineers, noise surveys of existing and new sites, design using computer and physical models, communication of the design to the client and design team, project management, site supervision and commissioning of the finished projects. - Environmental noise:
Noise is a major issue for society: 80 million EU citizens live in unacceptably noisy areas. Environmental health officers consider noise in planning new developments, such as housing affected by noise, or new noisy activities, and enforcement of existing noise concerns including the sources of complaints from the public. Consultants in environmental noise work in small specialists firms or large multinational consultancies, including engineering firms. Junior staff measure noise and use computer models to predict noise levels from new developments such as roads, railways and industrial plants. It also means that if you went on to further study, for example the MSc Applied Acoustics course, you could miss out the Postgraduate Certificate level and go straight onto the Postgraduate Diploma.

The course only takes one year to complete and you'll study on a Tuesday afternoon and evening starting in September. The examinations are held in June and you'll need to complete a project which usually takes place over the summer months.

The MSc Acoustics has two pathways: Audio Applications and Environmental Applications.

- Audio pathway -

The generation, manipulation and reproduction of high quality audio signals are core elements of the rapidly expanding communication, entertainment and sound engineering industry. The audio pathway aims to train graduates in the acoustic aspects of audio such as digital signal processing, microphone and loudspeaker design, architectural acoustics and sound reproduction.

- Environmental pathway -

The environmental pathway is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to work in environmental acoustics, including environmental noise consultancy, noise control in industry and acoustic engineering research.
The course is accredited by the Institute of Acoustics which provides external validation of the course quality.

Format

The majority of teaching and learning takes place through tutorial and seminar groups. Assessment is generally in the form of assignments, which improve problem solving and other skills as well as providing a strong background in the subject area.The Acoustics MSc course offers a variety of flexible formats, including full- and part-time attending modes, and by distance learning over two years. Those considering part-time study should bear in mind that the courses are intensive, and that generally, we advise that part-time means half time, i.e. you would need to allocate half the week to the MSc, 19 working hours.

Distance learning and attending students benefit from the supply of a range of high-quality teaching materials, text books and software. Interaction with students is face-to-face wherever practical, but we also use web-based learning support packages (databases of materials, discussion boards etc.) to support the whole cohort.

The Audio Pathway on this course is designed to train graduates to meet a growing demand for audio skills in industry, and also to enable employees to reach their full potential. This postgraduate course has been used as in-service training by a number of UK and global companies (e.g. mobile telecoms). While one naturally thinks of mobile phone design as belonging to 'telecommunications', there are considerable audio engineering challenges in designing good quality sound from the small transducers used in confined spaces, often in the presence of considerable background noise. Also, increasing markets exist for sophisticated audio systems in the home (surround sound cinema), at work (Internet conferencing facilities, virtual environments) and in transport (car audio). This masters course has been devised to meet this growing demand.

The audio acoustics industry is diverse. It includes major firms with 'core' audio-related market share such as Philips, Sony, Dolby, B&O and KEF. Many other businesses employ specialists in acoustics: Nokia, Bentley (and Ford, Nissan etc) to name a few. Building design and architectural acoustics needs specialist engineering consultants looking at room configurations and surface treatments, noise ingress and egress, sound reinforcement system design and so on, and a very wide variety of companies (Arup Acoustics are one large example in this area) employ graduates from our courses. Students also go on to study for a higher degree by research, here at Salford or elsewhere.

The Environmental Pathway meets the needs of people wanting a career dealing with building design, noise and its control. With noise being a significant problem worldwide, there is significant demand from companies wanting to employ graduates understanding acoustics. Many employers such as noise and acoustic consultancies, and product manufacturers, come directly to Salford to recruit graduates from our courses. AIM OF COURSE

Mobile radio encompasses a diversity of communications requirements and technical solutions including cellular mobile radio and data systems (eg GSM, GPRS, 3G, 4G, WiMax) and Personal Mobile Radio as well as various indoor radio systems including Bluetooth, WIFI, Wireless Indoor Networks (WINs or LANs). In view of the huge size of the market for these enhanced systems providing flexible personal communications, it is important that industry equips itself to meet this challenge. This MSc course aims to provide industry with graduates who possess a thorough knowledge both of actual modern radio systems and of the fundamental principles and design constraints embodied in those systems.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course spans 50 weeks of full-time study and is divided into teaching and project modules. The teaching block is based on 6 modular courses, each comprising approximately 40 hours of lectures (or lecture equivalents) with additional directed study and practical work. All of these modules are augmented by specific case studies, applications and tutorials.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

Radio Systems Engineering
A radio receiver design is analysed in detail so that design compromises may be understood. Topics include gain, selectivity, noise figure, dynamic range, intermodulation, spurious output, receiver structures, mixers, oscillators, PLL synthesis, filters and future design trends. This course also includes familiarisation with industry - standard design packages. Introduces key concepts in conventional and novel antenna design. It incovers the following topics: basic antenna structures (eg wire, reflector, patch and helical antennas); design considerations for fixed and mobile communication systems; phased array antennas; conformal and volume arrays; array factor and pattern multiplication; mutual coupling; isolated and embedded element patterns; active match; true time delay systems; pattern synthesis techniques; adaptive antennas; adaptive beamforming and nulling.

Mobile Radio Systems and Propagation
The aim of this module is to investigate the nature of radio propagation in mobile radio environments. This will be achieved through the examination of several modern mobile radio systems. The effects of the propagation environment will also be considered.

Spectrum Management and Utilization
The electromagnetic spectrum is a finite resource which has to be properly managed. This module will address issues related to spectrum management. Topics covered will include: spectrum as a resource; space, time and bandwidth; international regulation organisations and control methods; definitions of spectrum utilisation and spectrum utilisation efficiency; spectrum-consuming properties of radio systems; protection ratio; frequency dependent rejection and the F-D curve; spectrum management tools, models and databases; spectrally-efficient techniques; efficient use of the spectrum.

Electromagnetic Compatability (EMC)
This module provides an introduction to EMC. Topics include fundamental EM interactions and how these give rise to potential incompatibilities between systems; current EMC legislation; test environments and test facilities.

Communication Systems and Digital Signal Processing
Students are introduced to a range of concepts underpinning communications system design. DSP topics include the theory and applications of: real-time DSP concepts/devices; specialist filter applications; A/D and D/A interface technology; review of Fourier/digital filter applicable to DSP; modem design: modulation, demodulation, synchronisation, equalisation; signal analysis and synthesis in time and frequency domain; hands-on experience of DSP tools and DSP applications.

Low Power/Low Voltage Design and VHDL
This module introduces the low power and low voltage design requirements brought about by increasingly small scale sizes of circuit integration. The module also introduces students to VHDL, which is widely used in industry today.

Design Exercise (RF Engineering)
This self-contained exercise aims to introduce the student to aspects of RF engineering, system specification, design and implementation. A design, such as a 2GHz receiver, will be taken through to practical implementation.

Radio Frequency and Microwave Measurements
This covers the theory of EM waves, propagation and scattering. It introduces the student to methods and instruments to measure important EM wave properties such as power and reflection coeffcients.

Active RF and Microwave Circuits
This module provides the student with an appreciation of; noise in microwave systems (basic theory, sources of noise, noise power and temperature, noise figure and measurement of noise); detectors and mixers (diodes and rectification, PIN diodes, single ended mixers, balanced mixers, intermodulation products); microwave amplifiers and oscillators (microwave bipolar transistors and FETs, gain and stability, power gain, design of single stage transistor amlifier, conjugate matching, low noise amplifier design and transistor oscillator design).

PROJECT MODULE
Following a course on research skills and project planning, each student carries out one major project from Easter to September focusing on a real industrial problem. Some projects are carried out ‘on-site’ with our local and national industrial partners. The basics of project planning and structure are taught and supervision will be given whilst the student is writing a dissertation for submission at the end of the course.

We have excellent links with the Institute of Acoustics (IoA) and the Association of Noise Consultants, as well as a number of commercial companies across the sector. These include KP Acoustics, with whom we have a formal partnership for work placement and mentoring. The course has also been designed to meet the requirements for professional IoA registration.

To aid study and help perfect techniques, students have full access to the University’s laboratory and studio facilities. Students will be able to undertake acoustic measurement and laboratory projects using a wide range of test equipment such as sound level meters, a 16-channel data acquisition system, head and torso simulators, a laser vibrometer and ambisonic microphones. You may be able to gain graduate membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and do the assessments required to register as a practitioner. Environmental Health Officers often hold senior positions within their organisations with employment opportunities in local government, the private sector, NHS and government agencies.

Course Benefits

Successful completion of a CIEH accredited course is the first stage of becoming a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner. You will also need to produce a Portfolio of Professional Practice (PPP) covering all five intervention areas and complete the professional interview. For the PPP you will be required to engage in work-related learning activities. These elements of the course are managed by the CIEH and further information can be obtained from their website (http://www.cieh.org/).

Our course is designed to prepare you for the next steps of your professional training and includes work-related activities that may help you complete some elements of the your PPP. You will also be actively encouraged to seek relevant experience as this may shorten the time required post-graduation to complete the CIEH requirements.

Modules

Environmental Interventions
This module examines environmental stressors such as pollution, waste management problems and noise alongside the relevant legislation.

Food Interventions
In order to ensure food safety you will cover the relevant theory and practical training in food inspection.

Health & Safety Interventions
You will study the legislation, identify safe working practices and learn how to conduct risk assessments.

Housing Interventions
You will study housing law and practice in order to help eradicate poor housing conditions in individual properties and wider communities.

Research Methods in Health & Wellbeing
Provides the skills to complete a successful dissertation, which is a significant part of the final assessment.

Public Health in Action
Considers the different types of public health activity within local authorities and specifically environment health.

Professional Practice
Integrates aspects of all of the other modules studied on the course.

Research & Practice Development
Your opportunity to undertake a small scale piece of research and/or development that underpins your health-rated practice within nutrition, environmental health or health promotion.

Professor Ieuan Ellis

Ieuan is responsible for the strategic leadership of the Faculty of Health and Social sciences. He is also a member of Academic Board, and an elected staff representative on the Board of Governors. He is also Chair of the UK Council of Deans of Health and Co-chair of the National Allied Health Professions Advisory Board. After practicing as a chartered physiotherapist in the NHS and private sector, Ieuan entered higher education working initially at Northumbria University prior to joining our University. Ieuan has held a number of leadership and management roles across health and social care education and was awarded a personal chair as Professor in Healthcare Education

Programme aim

We are affected by sound and vibration in our daily life. Beyond this basic shared experience, “sound and vibration” as an interdisciplinary subject incorporates fields as diverse as physics, mechanics, physiology, signal processing, psychology and electrical engineering. Sound and vibration properties are critical for the function and quality of environments, products and transportation.

Today the design of e.g. high-speed trains, cars, transport infrastructure and buildings is strongly influenced by the performance requirements for sound and vibration properties.

The main aim of the programme is to educate specialists in the field of sound and vibration who contribute to a competitive and innovative industry and to a sustainable society where the negative effects of noise and vibration on the natural and urban environments and people’s health and well-being are diminished.

Who should apply

The programme is designed for students with a high level of interest in interdisciplinary work where engineering skills are applied to increase the level of comfort and health of people. It is suitable for students with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, urban planning, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics,
engineering mathematics, architecture and engineering or architectural engineering.

Why apply

With its breadth, the programme is unique in Sweden. Students can specialise in the field of noise control engineering, architectural acoustics or environmental acoustics. Cooperation with other Scandinavian universities enables the range of specialisations to be further extended (e.g. underwater acoustics, musical acoustics).

As a specialist in sound and vibration, graduates have a wide application area in which to work that extends from the vehicle industry to audio technology. The educational profile enables students to find professional opportunities as specialists all over the world, especially in Europe where there is a clear need for specialists in the field.
