MSc Nursing (Adult) Course Structure

The 2-year MSc in Nursing (Adult) is open to applicants who have already completed an honours degree and have a minimum of 750 hours’ experience in a healthcare setting in the last year.

The curriculum for the MSc in Nursing is designed to meet the needs of the changing demography in the wider population and the emerging health needs. A range of teaching and learning strategies are implemented to engage the learner including simulation, practice learning, lectures, skills rehearsals, and online digital learning resources.

Practice based learning is central to the students’ development, and Nursing (Adult) students will spend 40 weeks of their course on placement. Here they will gain experience in a diverse range of nursing settings, including community, nursing homes, and hospitals.

The Nursing (Adult) programme has been designed to develop the students’ personal and professional attributes, knowledge and skills required of a newly registered nurse.

The Nursing (Adult) course does not follow the usual University term times. The academic year starts in early September and ends late the following August. 

50% of the teaching for Nursing students will take place in healthcare placements, and the other 50% will be taught at university.

The MSc Nursing (Adult) is made up of five modules:

Year 1:

Module 1 – Introduction to Nursing

Module 2 - Living with Long-term and Chronic Conditions

Year 2

Module 3 – Managing Complex Care in Deteriorating Situations

Module 4 – Leadership & Decision-making

Module 5 – Dissertation

Teaching is based on a social model and Nursing (Adult) students will be taught to appreciate healthcare and the well- being of the patient in the wider context. A range of teaching methods will be adopted in order to provide a stimulating learning environment. These will include; lectures, guided reading, seminars, discussion groups, scenarios, distance learning, practical sessions, simulated practice and Enquiry Based Learning.

Assessments will enable Nursing (Adult) students to develop creative, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Students will learn how to deal with real-life situations in the form of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), poster presentations and will even write a journal article ready for publication.

Fees and Funding for Nursing (Adult) Course

There are no tuition fees to pay for the MSc Nursing (Adult) for UK / EU students.

To be eligible for WEDS funding international students must have residency for 3 years (working and living) in the United Kingdom. EU area students can also apply. Standard fees apply for international students.

Careers in Nursing

Job prospects are very good for Swansea University Adult Nursing students, 99% are employed in graduate level jobs within six months of graduating.

Most work in the NHS. Clinical specialties are varied but typical areas of practice include accident and emergency, surgery and medicine, or the community.

Adult nursing graduates can expect a starting salary of about £21,000 rising to £34,000 for a highly-experienced staff nurse. Specialist nurses and practice managers can earn £45,000. Pay scales from the Royal College of Nursing website can be viewed here.

The School Direct Tuition Fee route is a new path into teaching at both primary and secondary levels. Participating schools, or clusters of schools that join together, are allocated a set number of student-teacher places. Trainees pay a course fee on this route and will join other student teachers on one of the established PGCE courses at UCL Institute of Education (IOE), whilst undertaking their teaching experience in the host school or cluster.

Degree information

This programme consists of university-based sessions, school-based sessions and teaching placements. The university-based sessions will include the study of the geography curriculum, lesson planning, effective teaching, classroom management and approaches to assessment.

The university based element of the course is closely linked to the school based elements of the course and some of the professional studies elements will be delivered in school. There are a small number of lectures but most university-based work is undertaken in a subject specialist group of 20-25 students.

Students undertake two Master’s-level (level 7) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Completion of the Professional Practice module and one or two level 6 (undergraduate/Bachelor’s level) modules, will lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE). There are no optional modules for this programme.

Placement
You will spend most of your time (120 days) in schools, working with geography mentors who support you through your two school placements. We are fortunate to have a good choice of schools with whom we work, with some outstanding mentors and strong business studies departments.

Teaching and learning
The School Direct (Tuition Fee) PGCE full-time route is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the Institute of Education as well as time spent in placement schools or colleges. Assessment is by practical teaching, assignments, portfolio tasks and, for some subjects, practical projects. Students will also record their progress in a Career Entry and Development Profile statement. This will form part of a portfolio that links into the induction year (the first year of teaching) and a student's continuing professional development.

Careers

Graduates of this programme are currently working across a broad range of areas. Some are working as teachers and heads of department in schools and colleges, while others have jobs as headteachers and assistant heads. Graduates in this area can also be found working as mentors of Geography PGCE students.

Employability
A PGCE from the IOE carries considerable currency in schools, which alongside the quality of training you receive, puts you in a strong position in the employment market. Last year, all those students who sought employment in a school were successful. We expect 100% success rate in gaining a post in a school by the end of the year.

Curriculum for Integrated Climate System Sciences

Your curriculum for the two-year ICSS master`s program is subdivided into four semesters with mandatory courses, elective courses for specialization and the preparation of your master’s thesis. The curriculum starts from a firm basis in climate physics (and in particular climate modeling) but adds the equally important aspects of global and regional biogeochemical cycling and puts all this into a broader context, including economic as well as societal implications. SICSS courses comprise a wide range of atmospheric, hydrospheric, cryospheric, pedospheric and biospheric sciences, as well as introductions and specializations into economics, social geography, media sciences and conflict research to shed light on climate system science from different perspectives.

You will start your studies with mandatory courses in research skills, as well as natural and social science foundation courses in climate system sciences.
The main goal of the second semester is to broaden your knowledge across the climate science disciplines. You will choose courses from at least two of the three possible program tracks.
The third semester features the Climate Study Project, which includes an integrated seminar and a scientific writing course to prepare you for the master thesis. You will find your personal supervisor and work closely together with a CliSAP research group.
The fourth and final semester is reserved for the master’s thesis.

This personal buddy is one of the MSc ICSS students and will accompany you from the start of your travel and study planning to your arrival and during your first days in Hamburg. Tuition fees and other costs

There are no tuition fees at the Universität Hamburg and foreign students who are enrolled do not pay tuition. However, there are other fees. The programme gives students a detailed understanding of the changes that occur and difficulties that can arise for the individual who seeks the help of a speech and language therapist.

Speech and language therapists work in hospital wards and outpatient departments, mainstream and special schools, day centres and clients' homes, and courtrooms, prisons and young offenders' institutions. Practice placements are organised to give experience of a number of these settings.

The programme aims to develop speech and language therapists who are autonomous, accountable practitioners, competent and confident to contribute their evidence-based profession-specific skills and knowledge in the delivery of health, education and social care for users of speech and language therapy services and their families.

The programme is structured to maximise opportunities for learning how to work in an interprofessional and multi-agency context and within a changing workforce. A wide range of assessments are used including written assessments, presentations and assessment of placement education.

Course overview

This course is for people who need to improve their science subject understanding before starting a one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) course.

The structure of the course will vary according to whether you want to teach chemistry, physics or another science. You should have at least an A Level in the science subject that you intend to teach, and, you should have already received a conditional offer for initial teacher training (ITT). You will complete this preparatory course ready for starting ITT in September.

When you successfully complete your ITT, your career prospects will be very good. There is a national shortage of science teachers, particularly in physics and chemistry. So there are excellent job opportunities both in the North East and throughout the country.

Sunderland has a heritage of teacher training which dates back to 1908. What’s more, we’re one of only a small number of teacher-training institutions in the UK offering a broad range of science.

There is no tuition fee for this course, and you will be paid a bursary while you are studying.

Course content

This course enhances your skills and knowledge in science education, preparing you for teacher training.

This 24-week fast track course will boost your maths knowledge so that you are able to teach maths up to A Level. To join the Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course, you should already have received a conditional offer for initial teacher training – or you should at least be considering an application for it.

Typically, you should have already received a conditional offer for initial teacher training (ITT) – or you should at least be considering an application for it. Our course ends in July so that you are ready for ITT in September.

For Home/EU students, there is no tuition fee and you will be paid a bursary while you are studying on the course.

You will cover areas such as geometry, calculus, statistics, mechanics, patterns and equations as well as common errors and misconceptions in mathematics. At the initial interview, we will advise you whether this 24-week fast track course is suitable for you or whether an alternative course would be better for your circumstances.

Once you have successfully completed the SKE course and your initial teacher training, your career prospects will be very good. There is a national shortage of mathematics teachers and there are excellent job prospects, both in the North East and throughout the country.

This course is based on the banks of the River Wear at The Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s. Interactive whiteboards are available in our classrooms and we encourage you to use mathematical software, such as Autograph graph-plotting software, to support your learning.

When it comes to IT provision you can take your pick from over a hundred PCs in the St Peter’s Library, a dedicated computer classroom, and wireless access zones. If you have any problems, just ask the friendly helpdesk team.
