About the course

Applications have closed to start the MPhil in Sociology and Demography in 2017-18. Applications to start in October 2018 will open in September.

The MPhil introduces students to contemporary theories and research methods on the intersection of sociology and demography. This 21-month programme takes a life-course and multilevel approach, aiming to integrate micro and macro issues in analysing social problems and the causes and consequences of population change.

The MPhil Sociology and Demography will prepare you for doctoral work in sociology and demography and research-intense jobs.

The curriculum emphasises:

• population-level analysis and demographic measures
• a life course approach
• sociological analysis as the key approach to explanation
• advanced quantitative methods.

This emphasis is reflected in the compulsory papers. Optional papers and the thesis will reflect either a more specialised topical study (eg gender, family and fertility, migration and integration of migrants, health and mortality, intergenerational relationships) or methodological work.

The MPhil programme has the following components:

• Sociological Analysis paper taught in the first year through lectures and seminars, assessed by an unseen examination
• Demographic Analysis paper taught in the first year through lectures, seminars and computer labs, assessed through a combination of examination and assignments
• Life Course Research paper taught in the first year through lectures, seminars and computer labs, assessed through a combination of methods
• Statistical Methods paper taught in the first year through lectures and computer labs, assessed through a combination of a test and assignments
• Research Design paper taught in the first year through lectures, assessed via a combination of methods
• Two optional papers over both years of the MPhil, normally taught through eight weekly classes/seminars for each paper and assessed by unseen examination or appropriate coursework
• Replication project in the second year, comprising a combination of individual and group work and assessed via assignments
• MPhil thesis, a substantial piece of original research (of up to 30,000 words) to be submitted by the end of the second year

Graduate destinations

Graduates often continue with a PhD at Oxford or doctoral studies at highly-ranked US and continental programmes. Others find placement in research-intensive occupations in the public sector (eg national statistical offices, government departments and regional/local authorities), in international organisations, think tanks, and in private sector occupations in which quantitative skills are highly valued (consulting, market research, health research, social research, and insurance companies).

Applicants are normally expected to be predicted or have achieved a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours (or equivalent international qualifications), as a minimum, in a social science subject.

The department will only consider applicants who have an undergraduate degree in arts, humanities or science subjects if they can demonstrate a strong interest in sociology, as taught at Oxford.

For applicants with a degree from the USA, the minimum GPA sought is 3.7 out of 4.0.

The MSc in Sociology for 2017-18 has now closed to new applications. Applications for the 2018-19 academic year will become available in September.

Students are given high quality research training in sociology, which includes knowledge of relevant theoretical approaches, an understanding of their application to substantive problems and skills in the use of major research techniques. The course prepares students for doctoral work in sociology and research-intense jobs in the public and private sector.

The MSc Sociology is a one-year taught course which is assessed in five elements.

Sociological analysis:

A compulsory core paper on sociological analysis, for which you sit a three hour unseen examination at the end of Trinity Term. The paper examines the nature of different sociological explanations, their potentials and methodological implications and their relationship with concepts from other disciplines. The interrelationships between description and explanation, theory and empirical data.

The course, in Michaelmas Term, consists of eight lectures (one hour each) followed by two seminars (also one hour each) where the class is split in two groups.

Research methods:

A compulsory research methods course, for which you are examined through a mixture of a formal examination and take-home assignments. This course comprises three sections: statistics, qualitative methods and research design.

Statistics:

The statistics course consists of eight statistics lectures and eight STATA sessions in the IT Laboratory (Michaelmas Term). Qualitative Methods (Michaelmas Term) consists of eight lectures and Research Design (Hilary Term) consists of eight lectures and classes.

Option papers:

You will take two option papers in Hilary term, for which you sit either an unseen examination or complete appropriate coursework. You should note that the options available may vary from year to year. There are normally eight weekly classes for each paper. Dissertation:

Our course builds your skills in leadership and management and teaches you how to apply them in an engineering context. The MA Creative Music Production is aimed at applicants specifically interested in applying studio technologies and production skills to the creation of their own original music (as opposed to “producing” other artists’ music). Careers

Graduates from this award will be equipped with a wide range of specialist knowledge and skills in the field of music technology and music creation – from purely technical to creative and intellectual. As such, they will be ideally positioned to pursue a career in the music and media industries, creating their own musical content for production music library, film/TV synch, or commercial release. You may, in addition, consider positions in music publishing, music journalism and criticism, or teaching, or you may continue your higher education at doctoral level.

Teaching methods

Lecture, seminars and tutorials are typically scheduled over two consecutive days a week, plus some extra sessions for particular workshops, performance, recording, as necessary. In addition to scheduled sessions, students are expected to engage in continuous self-directed study and studio practice.

The MA Creative Music Production is led by Bruce Aisher.  Bruce is a music producer, songwriter, composer, remixer, sound designer and technology journalist whose work is to be found on over 100 commercially released tracks (including a US Billboard Club Chart No.1) on TV programmes such as ‘CSI’ ‘Numb3rs’ and 'Top Gear' and products by Apple, Clavia and Native Instruments.

Entry requirements

A good (1st, 2.1 or 2.2) BMus/BSc/BA in Music / Music Technology (or equivalent qualification), or 5 years professional industry experience at the discretion of the admissions or programme tutor. Evidence of solid compositional work with technology prior to undertaking the course is required (determined by the submission of a small portfolio of original compositions with the student’s application).

All international students are required to demonstrate suitable levels of English language competence. This can be through previous study in English, but we often require specific performance in English tests. All undergraduates must be able to prove a minimum of IELTS 6.5 with at least 5.5 in every component or equivalent.

The taught modules will cover all of the subject material that you are likely to teach up to GCSE, as well as areas from A level and beyond.

However, the aim of the course is to give you a much greater depth of understanding of the subject, being able to explain why as well as how techniques work, and an understanding of applications and the historical and cultural context of the subject.

The course is fully funded and there are no fees to pay.

Weekly bursary - £200 per week

You cannot apply directly for the SKE course. Instead, you should apply through UCAS for a secondary maths teacher training course such as a traditional university based PGCE course or a School Direct course, indicating in your personal statement that you are interested in completing the SKE.

At interview an assessment is made of your subject knowledge. If appropriate, a conditional offer is made through UCAS where the condition is that you complete the SKE.

A place will automatically be reserved for you, and no further application is necessary.

Over the past few years, we’ve redeveloped both of our campuses so that you have the best facilities available for your degree. We pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we can offer our students.

At Bognor Regis campus there is an integrated approach to the provision of learning resources and support. We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas. We use an electronic learning environment with an expanding portfolio of online library resources from anywhere at any time.

Our award winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus. It hosts a modern library service with areas for quiet and silent study on both floors. Also situated in the LRC is the Support and Information Zone, Costa Coffee and over 80 open access work stations. An equipment loans centre offers laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for short and long term loans.

Teaching and assessment

The course is full time, with taught face-to-face sessions taking place on Mondays to Thursdays and directed study tasks on Fridays.

The full course consists of 20 weeks of study beginning at the end of January, but there is an option to join the course for the last 13 weeks for students who already have stronger understanding of topics up to GCSE level.

Students also learn how best to apply academic theory to real-life marketing scenarios, eventually researching and writing their own 12,000 word dissertation. This is an ideal opportunity to explore an area of marketing that is related to their own unique career ambitions.

Students obtain experience in aspects of legal practice, from client-handling and case- related research, to advocacy and representation, and reflecting on Public Interest Litigation, as well as developing and managing the Ulster Law Clinic, the specialist clinic embedded in the course.

The function of the course is to supplement the existing range of legal service providers by focusing on, and meeting, ‘unmet legal need’ in the fields of employment law and social security law. Within the induction programme students will begin their skills based learning, with an introduction to skills development in interviewing, drafting, negotiation and advocacy.

Assessments include written and oral based coursework and case studies of relevant legal issues and client based problems through the use of reflective learning journals; case studies on simulated and real client cases; and advocacy, interviewing and negotiation exercises.

INTRODUCTION

The respected International Society of Automation (ISA) estimated that at least 15,000 new automation engineers are needed annually in the US alone. Many industrial automation businesses throughout the world comment on the difficulty in finding experienced automation engineers despite paying outstanding salaries.

The Master of Engineering (Industrial Automation) perfectly addresses this gap in the Industrial Automation industry. The program's twelve core units, and project thesis, provide you with the practical knowledge and skills required. Students with a background in electrical, mechanical, instrumentation and control, or industrial computer systems engineering can benefit from this program.

The content has been carefully designed to provide you with relevant concepts and the tools required in today’s fast-moving work environment. For example, Power Engineering covers major equipment and technologies used in power systems, including power generation, transmission and distribution networks. Programmable Logic Controllers covers in-depth principles of operation of programmable controllers, networking, distributed controllers, and program control strategies. Industrial Process Control Systems combines the process identification and feedback control design with a broad understanding of the hardware, system architectures and software techniques widely used to evaluate and implement complex control solutions. Industrial Instrumentation identifies key features of widely used measurement techniques and transducers combined with microprocessor devices to create robust and reliable industrial instruments. Process Engineering will enable students to evaluate and apply complex process calculations through application of control principles. Industrial Data Communications provides the requisite knowledge to manage modern field buses and industrial wireless systems. Safety Systems provides an introduction to the common safety philosophy of hazard identification, risk management and risk-based design of protection methods and functional safety systems. SCADA and DCS cover hardware and software systems, evaluation of typical DCS and SCADA systems and configuration of DCS controllers. Special Topics enable students to incorporate current technologies and the knowledge acquired from the entire course and thus solve complex Industrial Automation problems.

The Masters project, as the capstone of the course, requires a high level of personal autonomy and accountability, and reinforces the knowledge and skill base developed in the preceding subjects. As a significant research component of the course, this project will facilitate research, critical evaluation and the application of knowledge and skills with creativity and initiative, enabling students to critique current professional practice in the Industrial Automation industry.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

To gain entry into the Master of Engineering (Industrial Automation), applicants need one of the following:
a) a recognized 3-year bachelor degree in an engineering qualification in a congruent* field of practice with relevant work experience**.
b) a 4-year Bachelor of Engineering qualification (or equivalent), that is recognized under the Washington Accord or Engineers Australia, in a congruent*, or a different field of practice at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.
c) a 4-year Bachelor of Engineering qualification (or equivalent) that is not recognized under the Washington Accord, in a congruent* field of practice to this program.

AND

An appropriate level of English Language Proficiency equivalent to an English pass level in an Australian Senior Certificate of Education, or an IELTS score of 6.5 (with no individual band less than 6), or equivalent as outlined in the EIT Admissions Policy.

*Congruent field of practice means one of the following with adequate Industrial Automation content (fields not listed below to be considered by the Dean and the Admissions Committee on a case-by-case basis):

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Students must complete 48 credit points comprised of 12 core subjects and one capstone thesis. The thesis is the equivalent of one full semester of work. There are no electives in this course. The course duration is two years full time, or equivalent. Subjects will be delivered over 4 semesters per year. Students will take 2 subjects per semester and be able to complete 8 subjects per year. There will be a short break between semesters. Each semester is 12 weeks long.

During the program you will participate in weekly interactive sessions with the lecturers and other participants from around the world. Each unit's weekly live tutorial will last 60 to 90 minutes. We take student availability into consideration wherever possible before scheduling webinar times. All you need to participate is an adequate Internet connection, speakers and a microphone.
