Global Innovation Design (GID) is a joint Master's programme between the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London. It is a unique, transnational Master’s design initiative that brings together three major centres of design, culture, enterprise and industry: Europe, North America and Asia. 

GID is a multidisciplinary, multicultural and multinational design programme awarding both an MA from the Royal College of Art and an MSc from Imperial College London to graduates. GID offers an engaging global curriculum and provides powerful cultural experiences crafted to nurture innovators and designers who are prepared to take on the changing needs of enterprise in the twenty-first century. 

GID international partners include Pratt Institute (New York), Keio University (Tokyo), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and Tsinghua University (Beijing). Each of these distinctive institutions brings unique expertise and complementary approaches to design, engineering, business and cultural sensitivity, within the context of internationally oriented design innovation. 

The GID vision is to foster a transformative postgraduate experience that is unparalleled in the world, one that cultivates internationally oriented innovation and design leaders who can tackle complex problems and deliver positive social, environmental, economic and cultural change.

The GID ethos is to cultivate activated people, designers and leaders who are capable of making change in the world. Designers on the Global Innovation Design Master's programme will be expected to generate creative directions that other designers and innovators will follow.

The programme is full time and runs over a period of two calendar years. GID Master's candidates on the joint RCA/Imperial College programme begin their course in London for two terms developing their visions and a body of work which will be thematically and regionally developed throughout the next year and a half.

They have the opportunity to study on the New York/Tokyo route or the Beijing/Singapore route during their first and second years. They then return to London for the final two terms of their graduation year. Graduates from the programme are expected to be central to innovation leadership in the twenty-first century. 

Philosophically, GID challenges designers to ask who they are and what is most important to them; as authors of material culture they are asked what kind of world do they wish to create, and what contributions will they make. Global Innovation Designers create transformational culture. At the centre of the programme is the knowledge that transformational culture is engendered by objects and experiences that are the embodiment of the robustly beautiful and the exquisitely functional combined.

The GID Master's programme offers:

  • a double Master's: MA Royal College of Art and MSc Imperial College London – students are fully enrolled at both institutions
  • programme includes study at world renowned institutions: route one, Keio University in Tokyo and the Pratt Institute in New York, and route 2, Tsinghua University in Beijing and Nanyang Technical University in Singapore

Study on the Tokyo/New York route route gives access to Keio University, well known for physical computing and social design interventions, as well as Pratt Institute, renowned for a tradition of excellence in industrial design. 

London – Beijing – Singapore

Study on the Beijing/Singapore route gives access to Tsinghua University, China's number one institution with world class design labs and studios, as well as Nanyang Technical University's School of Art, Design, and Media whose cutting edge programmes in new media and cultural and social design innovation situate it as a leader in emerging Asian and Global design.

At Tsinghua University, London-based students will benefit from studying at the top University in China, gaining first-hand experience of the culture of China and designing with both new and traditional materials in the context of emerging Asian design.

At Nanyang Technical University, London-based students will be exposed to a rich and varied Pan-Asian community. NTU offers world-class communication and video production instruction with cultural understanding at the core. NTU is expert in the practice of “value transmigration”, how to translate a culturally specific artefact into a viable product-service-system in a new cultural context.

The dynamics of the contemporary international environment, complex and interconnected as it is, presents an array of challenges for policy analysts, decision makers and scholars alike. This situation is especially relevant to the Middle East and Mediterranean regions as areas fraught with chronic tension, domestic and international conflict, and which face several acute social and economic issues.

Against this backdrop, the new graduate program in Diplomacy Studies is intended to elucidate the role of diplomacy as a main vehicle and mechanism for systematically addressing the broad cluster of issues that affect the entire region, and which can no longer be effectively dealt with exclusively from a narrow unilateral or bilateral vantage point.

The program is primarily intended for practitioners who are employed in a range of public and private international, transnational and multilateral organizations, as well as for future diplomats, researchers, and academics abroad and in Israel.

What you will study

The focus of the program is such that it will bring to the fore the fundamental role of collaborative diplomatic mechanisms and as such is designed to provide students with new insights, concepts and analytical tools for fully understanding the enhanced functions of diplomacy in this new setting. The program is intended to enable students to identify effective solutions for a broad range of political, cultural and economic issues with which they will be faced, and for their continued involvement as bureaucrats, officials and decision makers in the context of complex negotiating situations and policy implementation. The one-year program is taught in English over three consecutive semesters from October to August. Exceptional students wishing to apply to the thesis track will need, upon acceptance, to submit a research thesis within one year of completing their coursework.

Upon completion of the program, students will be awarded an MA in Political Science, with a specialization in Diplomacy Studies from the School of Political Sciences and the Division of International Relations.

Careers

Graduates of the program will be well placed to pursue careers in the field of foreign relations at their home countries and with international institutions. Graduates will also be well placed within international NGO’s who act as points of contact between different countries, both in the capacity of mediators and of educators

Practicum

Students will have an opportunity to experience the practices of diplomatic processes first-hand via practicum, designed to help integrate the insights and lessons drawn from the courses into a sophisticated and analytics perspective in the real world. Within the framework of this practicum, students will participate in an internship under the auspices of institutions and organizations, which address issues and predicaments that are relevant to diplomatic initiatives and processes (both unilateral, bilateral and multilateral), with emphasis on the Middle-East and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Read more.

Professor Dorussen is Associate Editor for the Journal of Peace Research, and specialises in the relationship between trade and conflict, the use of economic policies in international politics, the governance of post-conflict societies, and policy convergence in the European Union. He has recently completed fieldwork examining the impact of the UN mission on the perception of security in Timor Leste.

Professor Gizelis specialises in conflict dynamics, peacekeeping, gender equality and post-conflict reconstruction, and communicable diseases. In addition, Professor Gizelis is acting as Core Investigator on a new research project, ‘Armed Conflict and Maternal Health in Sub-Saharan Africa’ (2014-16), with the innovative aim of going beyond consideration of the direct effect of interventions to also consider relevant political, socioeconomic and cultural factors.

Professor Gleditsch’s research focuses on conflict and cooperation, democratisation, and spatial dimensions of social and political processes. He is the director of a large EU-funded research project on non-violent actions. He is also the director of the Michael Nicholson Centre of Conflict and Cooperation.

Course structure

This programme provides you with the opportunity to gain a higher degree through a combination of taught modules, independent study, writing and research. The MA in Creative Writing offers the opportunity to develop your skills as a writer and to explore the theory and practice of writing in the contemporary world.

How will I study?

Study is normally part-time over two years, but there is also provision for full-time study over one year. A range of teaching methods are used including seminars, lectures and occasional day schools. You will be encouraged wherever possible to practise independent learning strategies.

Modules on the MA programme are normally taught in the evening between 6.30pm - 8.30pm on a weekly basis over a ten-week term. Full-time students take two taught classes in Term 1 and one taught class plus dissertation supervision in terms 2 and 3. Part-time students take one taught module per term (terms 1,2,3) in their first year of study; in their second year of study they take one taught module in term 4 and dissertation supervision in terms 5 and 6.

This flexible programme is designed to allow you to combine study with full or part-time employment.

This course allows you to study United States politics at an advanced level in a department ranked top in the UK for research excellence (REF 2014) and with an extraordinary number of staff trained in the US. One of the few United States-focused courses in the UK, the course allows you gain in-depth knowledge of the workings of the US political system—what makes it unique, how it has evolved, and how it is changing. You receive a thorough training in the theories and methods needed to conduct your own research into United States politics – culminating in your dissertation on a topic that fascinates you and enhances your career. Your research skills will be in demand by a wide range of employers, including government, international organisations, policy analysis and market research. Course content

In year one you’ll explore successful enterprise and entrepreneurship and their role in society worldwide. You’ll explore how enterprise is seen around the world, and how different geographical and economic contexts create challenges for new ventures.

You’ll consider contemporary challenges and debates during guest lectures with successful entrepreneurs, hearing first-hand about their experience of the latest topics. You’ll also have the opportunity to apply what you have learned to your own business idea or an existing business, whilst drawing on their expertise.

In year two, you’ll take an in-depth look at social enterprises and alternative business models, including how best to grow an existing small business.

You’ll also work alongside our full-time students on a consultancy project for a local small-medium enterprise, building relationships with the founders and staff (you can read a student case study about a recent project). Some examples of recent projects include: ‘helping an ethical gifts retailer turn their sales performance around’; ‘undertaking a market and brand analysis for a luxury camping business’ and ‘researching the Jordanian and Indian market for a healthcare software company’.

You’ll be introduced to research methods, developing understanding of how to gain important market insights and analyse the viability of a business idea.

In the final semester of year two, you’ll complete the Enterprise Dissertation, an individual project that can be used to explore opportunities for your own business venture, develop a plan for growth in an existing business you are connected to, or to research in-depth an area of interest.

Part-time study

This part-time course enables existing entrepreneurs to continue to develop their business, whilst professionals and budding entrepreneurs can work alongside their studies. Combining work and study can often be to your advantage, since the experiences gained in your professional life will add depth and relevance.

You’ll study over two years, attending classes for one day per week from late September to early May with one-month breaks at Christmas and Easter. In year one, you'll also study for five days across June and early September. In year two, you’ll attend meetings with your dissertation supervisor from April to September. You can expect to attend for approximately 27 days in year one and 17 days in year two (plus dissertation meetings).

Program description

What can be done to avoid financial crises? How can growth in the least developed countries be accelerated? How can wealth be distributed equitably and sustainably? This program will allow students to acquire a thorough knowledge of the conceptual and empirical tools of modern Economics applied to international trade, finance, and development.

Tailor your program to fit your interests and goals

The program starts in the first term with a set of courses on economic growth and development, international trade and finance, and quantitative methods. In the second and third terms, students can choose from a wide array of courses and tailor their learning experience to their interests. Some students chose to specialize in development, others in international trade and finance, while others opt instead for a more balanced approach that combines training in both areas.

Students complete an independent study project by the end of the academic year, allowing them to specialize in a policy topic of their choice. They also attend a series of policy lessons delivered by international experts.

Study with experts from academia and international organizations

The master's faculty consists of internationally renowned scholars who have previously held academic positions at MIT, NYU, Chicago, Berkeley, Stanford and Cambridge. Degree

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a Master Degree in Specialized Economic Analysis awarded jointly with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. The degree requires the successful completion of 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits of graduate courses (6 credits are equivalent to a 40 hour course), some compulsory and some elective. The Institute of Philosophy offers a comprehensive range of BA, MA, Research Master and PhD degrees, all taught in English. Viewed collectively, our undergraduate and post-graduate degrees aim to familiarise students with the history of philosophy as well as with contemporary movements in analytic and continental philosophy so that they are able to engage with the fundamental areas of philosophical research. The Institute of Philosophy is proud to offer its students a broad philosophical education and a wide range of courses and seminars, as well as personalised study support and guidance.

The Research Master programme is primarily research-oriented and functions as a first step towards the doctoral programme. It focuses firmly on the development of high-level independent research. Your study programme is tailored to this goal. It allows you to concentrate on a particular field of study, supplemented by courses, seminars, and the oral defense of a research-based thesis.

The Research Master of Philosophy is a programme of 120 credits (2 years of full-time study). Philosophy has been taught at KU Leuven since its founding in 1425. Throughout the centuries, the university has remained an important and influential centre of philosophical thought, with a strong commitment to the international dimension of education. In more recent times, the Institute of Philosophy, established in 1889, has continued this august tradition and is now an internationally recognised centre of philosophical research and education.

In the final semester, you’ll complete a dissertation project on a research question of your choice - this can be used to explore your own ideas for a business venture or social enterprise, or look at how best to support or grow an existing firm.

You’ll also have a choice of optional modules in key areas of management and international business, including cross-cultural management, supply chain management and the emerging markets.

If you study part-time, you’ll study one day per week over 24 months and take only the compulsory modules, plus a dedicated module in applied enterprise. The Enterprise Project module is one example of how practical learning and teaching is embedded in the programme. This gives students the chance to work closely with an entrepreneur and undertake a strategic developmental role within their business. Students have the flexibility to pursue a project that they are passionate about, and to be supported by the expertise of the staff team. This allows for a range of diverse backgrounds in terms of learning experiences, ethnic diversity, disability, gender and age; projects will be developed and tailored to the individual’s learning needs.

All staff members are actively publishing their writing and have won several awards between them for creative outputs. The team have expertise in speculative fiction, historical fiction, scriptwriting, screenwriting, adaptation, poetry, experimental poetry, hybrid forms, horror fiction, literary fiction, creative non-fiction (including memoir and true-crime), and are able to support writing in a number of genres.

In addition, the Creative Writing team at York St John has a strong focus on the relationship between critical theory and creative writing and the intersection of a number of theoretical perspectives with creative practice, including eco-criticism, psychoanalysis, biopolitics and regionality. Members of the team have undertaken interdisciplinary and collaborative research exploring music, memory, medicine, uncanny landscapes and pollination.

Routes

The three distinct routes offer focussed, but flexible structures to fulfil a range of motivations. This is distinctive in the UK market:

  • Publication/book route – your aim is to produce a full-length work (e.g. novel, poetry collection, script, biography) for publication/performance/dissemination. The Critical/reflective Commentary will focus on this, whilst the creative submission can be in any form/genre.
  • Community/Heritage route –your aim is to produce a book-length work, performance or account exploring an outreach project with a partner, for example in health, arts, music or heritage. The Commentary may focus on the development and implications of this project, and could incorporate some qualitative/quantitative data or case studies, where appropriate.
  • Critical/theoretical route – your aim is to produce a book-length work in any form (novel, poetry, script). The project has a strong theoretical/critical underpinning, in which the Critical/reflective Commentary explores and analyses a movement, literary theory or other critical idea and the creative work performs a practice-based exploration of the same. Intended for students considering moving onto a PhD, but not exclusively for them.
  • Your final manuscript will comprise 40,000-70,000 words of prose or approx. 1,200 lines of poetry (the aim being a book-length manuscript appropriate to the chosen the form). Writers wishing to produce a script will produce an equivalent ‘time’ length. Your final manuscript will be accompanied by a Critical Commentary of 6,000 words which reflects on the process of composition.
  • Your project will be supported by one to one, expert supervision. This can be undertaken full- or part-time, face to face, online or a blended approach to suit your circumstances.
  • You will take part in a termly Writers’ Workshop to share work in progress with like-minded peers in a nurturing atmosphere.
  • A Residential Writing Retreat offers an opportunity to reflect and focus on your progress amongst a community of writing peers, facilitated by tutors, in a beautiful and inspiring regional or city setting.
  • Close links to agents, publishers, literary events and local arts and heritage organisations will fuel your creativity and hone your employability skills.

Teaching and learning

  • Taught via one to one supervision in three ten-week terms starting in October.
  • Termly peer Writing Workshops.
  • Weekend Residential Writing Retreat in April/May of the final year (with Portfolio Progress presentation assessment worth 20 of the 180 credits).
  • Manuscript submitted in September of the final year.
  • Whilst the learning is independent, but supported, students are encouraged to take a professional approach and attend the variety of events provided by the York Centre for Writing, which include visits from agents, publishers, editors and writers and foster an important sense of belonging and community.

How it works

Complete your core studies in Boston

Boston is where you’ll complete the core of your program. Master of Finance students are based in Boston for about ten months of the year. During your final two modules, you can choose to either stay in Boston – or you can choose to take electives in London and New York.

Where do you want to rotate to first?

In your penultimate module, Module D, you have the option of staying in Boston or taking electives and spending in London or New York. You can then choose to remain for the next module and extend your stay to twelve weeks if you prefer to only rotate once.

Where do you want to rotate to next?

For your final module, Module E, you can choose to spend six weeks in Boston, London, or New York.
