Global Innovation Design (GID) is a joint Master's programme between the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London. It is a unique, transnational Master’s design initiative that brings together three major centres of design, culture, enterprise and industry: Europe, North America and Asia. 

GID is a multidisciplinary, multicultural and multinational design programme awarding both an MA from the Royal College of Art and an MSc from Imperial College London to graduates. GID offers an engaging global curriculum and provides powerful cultural experiences crafted to nurture innovators and designers who are prepared to take on the changing needs of enterprise in the twenty-first century. 

GID international partners include Pratt Institute (New York), Keio University (Tokyo), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and Tsinghua University (Beijing). Each of these distinctive institutions brings unique expertise and complementary approaches to design, engineering, business and cultural sensitivity, within the context of internationally oriented design innovation. 

The GID vision is to foster a transformative postgraduate experience that is unparalleled in the world, one that cultivates internationally oriented innovation and design leaders who can tackle complex problems and deliver positive social, environmental, economic and cultural change.

The GID ethos is to cultivate activated people, designers and leaders who are capable of making change in the world. Designers on the Global Innovation Design Master's programme will be expected to generate creative directions that other designers and innovators will follow.

The programme is full time and runs over a period of two calendar years. GID Master's candidates on the joint RCA/Imperial College programme begin their course in London for two terms developing their visions and a body of work which will be thematically and regionally developed throughout the next year and a half.

They have the opportunity to study on the New York/Tokyo route or the Beijing/Singapore route during their first and second years. They then return to London for the final two terms of their graduation year. Graduates from the programme are expected to be central to innovation leadership in the twenty-first century. 

Philosophically, GID challenges designers to ask who they are and what is most important to them; as authors of material culture they are asked what kind of world do they wish to create, and what contributions will they make. Global Innovation Designers create transformational culture. At the centre of the programme is the knowledge that transformational culture is engendered by objects and experiences that are the embodiment of the robustly beautiful and the exquisitely functional combined.

The GID Master's programme offers:

  • a double Master's: MA Royal College of Art and MSc Imperial College London – students are fully enrolled at both institutions

London – Beijing – Singapore

Study on the Beijing/Singapore route gives access to Tsinghua University, China's number one institution with world class design labs and studios, as well as Nanyang Technical University's School of Art, Design, and Media whose cutting edge programmes in new media and cultural and social design innovation situate it as a leader in emerging Asian and Global design.

At Tsinghua University, London-based students will benefit from studying at the top University in China, gaining first-hand experience of the culture of China and designing with both new and traditional materials in the context of emerging Asian design.

At Nanyang Technical University, London-based students will be exposed to a rich and varied Pan-Asian community. NTU offers world-class communication and video production instruction with cultural understanding at the core. Course content

In year one you’ll explore successful enterprise and entrepreneurship and their role in society worldwide. You’ll explore how enterprise is seen around the world, and how different geographical and economic contexts create challenges for new ventures.

You’ll consider contemporary challenges and debates during guest lectures with successful entrepreneurs, hearing first-hand about their experience of the latest topics. You’ll also have the opportunity to apply what you have learned to your own business idea or an existing business, whilst drawing on their expertise.

In year two, you’ll take an in-depth look at social enterprises and alternative business models, including how best to grow an existing small business.

You’ll also work alongside our full-time students on a consultancy project for a local small-medium enterprise, building relationships with the founders and staff (you can read a student case study about a recent project). Some examples of recent projects include: ‘helping an ethical gifts retailer turn their sales performance around’; ‘undertaking a market and brand analysis for a luxury camping business’ and ‘researching the Jordanian and Indian market for a healthcare software company’.

You’ll be introduced to research methods, developing understanding of how to gain important market insights and analyse the viability of a business idea.

In the final semester of year two, you’ll complete the Enterprise Dissertation, an individual project that can be used to explore opportunities for your own business venture, develop a plan for growth in an existing business you are connected to, or to research in-depth an area of interest.

Part-time study

This part-time course enables existing entrepreneurs to continue to develop their business, whilst professionals and budding entrepreneurs can work alongside their studies. Combining work and study can often be to your advantage, since the experiences gained in your professional life will add depth and relevance.

You’ll study over two years, attending classes for one day per week from late September to early May with one-month breaks at Christmas and Easter. In year one, you'll also study for five days across June and early September. In year two, you’ll attend meetings with your dissertation supervisor from April to September. You can expect to attend for approximately 27 days in year one and 17 days in year two (plus dissertation meetings).

The Enterprise Project module is one example of how practical learning and teaching is embedded in the programme. This gives students the chance to work closely with an entrepreneur and undertake a strategic developmental role within their business. The Department of Education offers a one-year (12 month) taught full time MA in Science Education. This programme will be attractive to all those who have an interest in science education, whether as teachers, researchers or policy makers. Applications are welcomed from both home and international students.

Applicants are strongly advised to ensure that they submit applications no later than 1st September if they wish to begin a course of study beginning in the same year. No guarantee can be offered that applications received after this date will be processed for a September start date.

The Department also welcomes applications from people interested in studying for a PhD in science education in its areas of expertise (see below).

As members of the University of York Science Education Group, the science education staff in the Department of Education have made a significant contribution to the high profile of science education at York. Science specialist staff currently in the Department include Professor Robin Millar, Professor Judith Bennett, Martin Braund and Fred Lubben. All hold major grants for research and development in science education.

Areas of expertise include assessment, attitudes to science, the use of context-based approaches to the teaching of science, curriculum development (including international collaboration on projects), evaluation of curriculum interventions, gender issues in science education, practical work in science, scientific literacy, systematic reviews of research literature, and the transition from primary to secondary school. Current international work includes involvement in the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) project and a number of initiatives in Southern Africa.

The reputation of the University of York Science Education Group was a major contributory factor in York being chosen as the home of the new National Science Learning Centre, which opened in September 2005 and offers a programme of professional development courses for science teachers.

Our graduates find employment in a wide range of sectors within education, but also in journalism, information management, human resources and other careers.

Our postgraduate courses can be used to complement teacher training/development programmes and voluntary or paid roles which focus on the more practical elements of teaching. However, other than our PGCE, our courses are not teacher training programmes in themselves.

You will participate in core lecture programmes in the History of Art leading to a summative examination. This course is complemented by a seminar in the History and Theory of Art and Culture. You will experience Law through lectures and seminars delivered by professional practitioners and you will complete case studies for yourself. For the duration of the course, you will also actively participate to the life of a department within Christie’s. Your experience of the Auction Business through this placement will be augmented by visits to at least three key international Art Fairs and events (such as FIAC Paris, TEFAF Maastricht and Art Basel Hong Kong), to enable you to explore the art world in a variety of contexts.

Your dissertation takes the form of Work Placement Report and Catalogue of an auction consignment. This will enable you to bring together all three areas of your programme of study: Art History, Law and Business Practice in a single piece of work.

The goal of the M.A. in Modern and Contemporary Art and the Market is for students to acquire essential knowledge about art, the art market and their reciprocal relationship, while simultaneously building practical skills in preparation for careers in the art world. The program emphasizes the importance of direct contact with original works of art, and through the use of Christie's sale rooms and specialist staff, exploration of the history of art.

This interdisciplinary program provides an in-depth study of modern and contemporary art and its markets from the mid-19th century to the present day. Led by an expert faculty, the integrated program combines the development of connoisseurship skills through object-based learning and investigative cataloguing and writing, art history, knowledge of current art business practices and the market, and art market history. Students study art works first-hand in sites of production and exhibition throughout New York City and beyond. Additionally, access to specialists and salerooms through our central location at Christie’s auction house enhances the program and provides a unique and exceptional learning opportunity.

Our Unique Approach

Access to a wide range of art professionals provides students with first-hand knowledge of the workings of the art world, and the transferable skills they need to become art world professionals. An intensive program, it takes only 15 months to complete and concludes with the writing of a Master’s thesis and a mandatory 45-day internship to help students launch their professional careers.

Objectives

This new Master of Science is delivered in English and aims at international students who want to acquire interdisciplinary skills to evolve in the field of Comparative Effectiveness Research. The programme is limited to 30 students, a small group size that will allow professors to use highly interactive and innovative teaching methods including work in small groups. The goal of the programme is to acquire strong skills in methods, epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, biostatistics and public health.

Curriculum

The Master of Public Health in Comparative Effectiveness Research is a second-year course that is a part of a two-year Master in Public Health programme (60 ECTS). This Master’s programme comprises 10 modules, which are delivered through a range of interactive learning strategies. The programme includes the latest methods and advances in the field of CER, epidemiology and biostatistics. Courses will include applied, hands-on sessions allowing the use of various epidemiological methods, statistical methods, and analysis of various types of data.

Classes are full-time and take place from October to December. Each week is dedicated to one module that is delivered by two outstanding international lecturers.

Internship

Upon the completion of formalised courses and after the validation exams in January, students will have to complete a five-month internship. The internship can take place in France or abroad, in public health agencies and companies, in research laboratories, etc. and is supervised by a senior researcher.

In addition to the international teaching setting, students will also benefit from the vast professional and academic network maintained by the French and international faculty members. Indeed, the Master of Public Health in comparative effectiveness research is managed at the Centre of Research in Epidemiology and Statistics Sorbonne Paris Cité, and maintains close links with several professional networks, including the Cochrane Collaboration, the EQUATOR Network, the CONSORT Network and INSERM.

Internships will strengthen the connection and pooling of research discoveries between the academic and non-academic partners, encourage the acquisition of the transferable skills needed to succeed in a 21-century research setting and ensure a smooth transition to the professional world.

Although the organisations providing placements vary from year to year, according to availability, those regularly offering such opportunities include City of York Council, the Portable Antiquities Scheme, the York Archaeological Trust, AOC Archaeology and various other commercial archaeology units.

The LLM in International Human Rights Law and Practice engages students in a critical and nuanced examination of this paradox, while providing them with the practical skills necessary to apply global norms at the local level.

Why study International Human Rights at York?

The LLM in Human Rights Law and Practice provides the knowledge, skills and networks necessary for mid-career professionals and recent graduates to work in the human rights field. The LLM is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. Our LLM is distinctive because students:

LLM Structure

Three core modules cover international human rights law, policy and advocacy. Optional CAHR modules cover several topical issues through a human rights lens: culture, development, migration, and post-conflict justice.

The programme requires you to undertake a placement with human rights organisations in Malaysia (student numbers permitting) or the UK. This is an important part of the degree programme and will develop your practical skills and provide hands-on experience, both of which will prepare you for working in this field and improve your career prospects.

The LLM is taught in weekly lectures and seminars covering specific case studies and including skills training on oral presentations, advocacy, report writing, and memos.

Placements
A key part of the LLM is exposing students to the practice of international human rights law at the domestic level. Thus students have the opportunity to pursue a placement and related project with our NGO partners in Malaysia and York. The fieldwork takes place over a two week period in weeks 9 and 10 of the autumn term in either Kuala Lumpur or York. Please note that the Malaysia trip/placements will only run if there are sufficient student numbers.

Students will be expected to work together in small groups in partnership with a human rights organisation. This will include:
-Extensive background research on country context, the host organisation, relevant thematic issues etc.
-Devising a project prior to the field visit, in collaboration with the host organisation
-Two weeks of intensive work in Malaysia (student numbers permitting) or York in November and December
-Ongoing discussions about project completion once students return to York
