The MSc in Business Strategy & Entrepreneurship is designed for graduates seeking a rigorous foundation prior to launching their own company or entering an existing corporation in a role focused on business development and growth.

The programme will provide you with the required skills via a combination of teaching methods covering knowledge about best business practices, as well as covering the fundamental principles behind them.

Building on these skills, you will also have the opportunity to create a full plan for a new venture. The development of this new venture plan will be supported by academic faculty as well as a corporate sponsor or entrepreneur where appropriate.

The programme provides a unique mix of business strategy and entrepreneurship content that combines both leading academic research and the opportunity to apply this in a real world context.

Structure

The MSc in Business Strategy & Entrepreneurship consists of taught components, directed reading, assignments, practical sessions, written examinations and a new venture plan.

The taught component covers two academic semesters, each covering four core modules.

During Stage One, you will attend lectures, practical classes and tutorials coupled with directed reading and other assignments.

Following this, in Stage Two, you will carry out a new venture plan. The aim of the new venture plan is to integrate and apply core course concepts, skills and techniques holistically, experientially and in a self-guiding context in order to construct and present a complete plan for a new business venture.

You will undertake four core modules in each semester, each worth 15 credits. These modules provide you with a thorough grounding in the theory and skills needed to become an effective entrepreneur.

Following successful completion of the taught phase, you will undertake a New Venture Plan. This consists of both group and individual components and allows you to demonstrate the theories and techniques developed in the taught phase.

Methods of teaching

Most modules involve a mixture of lectures and small group teaching (called classes, seminars, workshops or tutorials).

In a lecture, the lecturer will mainly be giving an overview of a particular aspect of the module content (as well as opportunities for you to ask questions and be reflective), while in classes and workshops you will have an opportunity to practice techniques, discuss ideas, apply concepts and consolidate your understanding in the topic.

Support

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of your studies. Normally, your personal tutor will teach on your own degree course and you will keep the same personal tutor throughout your course.

Your personal tutor will be able to give you advice on academic issues, including module choice and assessment. If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate. You are required to meet with your personal tutors at three points during each academic year but you are also encouraged to get in touch with them at any other point if you need help or advice.

For day-to-day information, the staff of our Postgraduate Student Hub are available, in person, by telephone or by email, from 8am to 6pm each weekday during term time to answer your questions.

Feedback

We’ll provide you with regular feedback on your work. This comes in a variety of formats including oral feedback, personalised feedback on written work, and generic written feedback.

You will be given general feedback in relation to examinations following all examination periods and you will be able to discuss your overall performance with your personal tutor.

When undertaking the dissertation/project you are expected to meet regularly with your supervisor to review progress and discuss any questions. Your supervisor will be able to provide feedback on your research plan and drafts of your work as you progress.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary from module to module but, across your degree scheme as a whole, you can expect a mixture of exams, coursework, essays, practical work, presentations, and individual and group projects.

As the impact of change, the importance of strategy and intensification of competition increases, organisations are demanding managers who can contribute a depth of understanding in the business community as a whole. The growing economic importance of entrepreneurship has also re-emphasised the need for a clearer understanding of the theory and practice relating to business and management in both new and existing organisations.

The MBA in Management aims to build on our long-established expertise in the area of postgraduate training by offering a one-year modular MBA programme which focuses on developing participants’ academic and managerial skills in areas such as organisational behaviour, marketing strategy, e-business and new venture creation. An important objective is to provide relevant analytical training to familiarise participants with the latest strategic, managerial and industrial developments in both the public and private sectors.

The course provides a coherent analytical framework for the study of business and enterprise from a management perspective. The emphasis throughout the programme is on the application of contemporary, financial, managerial and strategic developments that affect real-world decision-making in the global market place.

We recognise that a thorough understanding of recent developments in management, entrepreneurship, strategy, marketing and finance are essential requirements for all those involved in a management role (or those who wish to gain a deeper understanding of these important business and management areas).
Course structure

January intake: Taught modules are undertaken in the period of January to June and September to January and will involve the study of 120 credits. The dissertation (or equivalent) is valued at 60 credits and is undertaken during the period of June to September.

Compulsory modules:

Organisations and People: This module examines key issues arising from contemporary research in organisational behaviour (OB) and human resource management (HRM). It provides an integrated analysis of management, organisations and people, developing the conceptual, strategic and practical skills necessary for managers in complex, global organisational contexts.

International Strategic Management: This module analyses strategic decision-making within business. You will develop a critical understanding of the strategic processes of business management, the interconnections with the functional domains of marketing, human resource management and corporate finance, and the management of knowledge systems.

Marketing Strategy: This module critically evaluates the contributions of various schools of thought in marketing, and examines the relevant analytical models and management practices, with emphasis on the strategic importance of marketing to all organisations.

Management Research: This module analyses the philosophical basis for research in the management sciences, and examines a number of key methodological issues and approaches. Research designs for both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are developed, including interviews, case studies, focus groups, surveys and experiments.

Finance for Managers: This module is designed for those who aim to achieve a basic understanding of financial management and control, and who require an understanding of finance in order to manage an organisation effectively. Financial planning and control are central themes, as well as the appraisal techniques of investment projects.

New Venture Creation: This module examines the advantages and disadvantages of the various routes to business start-up, including new venture creation, or establishing a business based on your own expertise, experience and ideas; buying an established business; purchasing a franchise; and succession through a family firm, an increasingly common way of becoming involved in entrepreneurial activity.

Optional modules (choose 2):

Knowledge Management: This module examines the processes whereby organisations and individuals develop and utilise their knowledge bases. Successful knowledge management hinges on people, culture and technology. As such it has professional and academic links with organisational behaviour and organisational learning.

Contemporary Issues in Management: This module develops several theories and concepts in contemporary management theory and practice. It provides a detailed and critical analysis of management, further developing the conceptual, strategic and practical skills necessary for managers in complex, global organisational contexts.

International Financial Management: In this module the financial management of multinational companies and the influence of macroeconomic, fiscal, currency and political environments on business and financial decision-making are examined in an international and global context.

European Business: This module examines the opportunities and constraints faced by businesses that operate on a pan-European basis. Emphasis is placed on the multi-dimensional characteristics of an economic and social space that is subject to a unique system of supra-national governance.

Public Sector Management: This module identifies the distinctive characteristics of the public sector in a competitive market-driven environment. Organisational forms in the public sector are reviewed, in the light of the changing culture of public services, competition, best value and public expectations.

Summer School

The marriage of both disciplines is a natural one, as understanding behaviour and specifically consumer behaviour in the world of business can be crucial to the success of businesses.

Today’s successful businesses and organisations need highly trained people who can help them understand their consumers and understand issues such as: What makes them choose one product over another? Do brand names and advertising really affect our thinking? Will the internet change the face of urban and suburban shopping areas?

In the first semester, Business and Consumer Psychology studies will be in equal proportions; however in Semester 2 there will be a greater focus on business, and the dissertation is undertaken in a business-related subject. Candidates may choose between the MA or MSc routes, which are differentiated by the nature of the dissertation. The MSc dissertation will involve undertaking empirical research, whilst the MA dissertation will involve an extended literature review.
Course Structure

The MSc and MA degrees in Business with Consumer Psychology are scheduled for a duration of 12 months. Each degree programme consists of two parts.

Part 1:

Is a wholly taught component, contributing 120 credits. All taught modules carry a credit weighting of 15 credits. Part 1 is taught during the two semesters which make up the academic year. Teaching during semester 1 normally runs from late-September to December, with examinations in January. Teaching during Semester 2 normally runs from late-January to early-May, with examinations in May and June.

Part 2:

Consists of a supervised Dissertation of around 10,000 words completed during the summer months, from late May to September. You are expected to submit your Dissertation by September in the calendar year following your initial registration for your postgraduate degree.

Consumer Psychology: This module is an introduction to consumer science as it is currently practiced in the marketplace and to relevant research in academia.

Credit and Security Law: The supply of credit is the lifeblood of industry but of course a lender will require security. This module will examine in detail the provisions relating to the regulation of the supply of credit to consumers and business.

International Corporate Finance Law and Merger Regulation Law: This module focuses on the study of leading case law and selected legislation, relating to international mergers and their financing from several common law countries such as the USA, Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, as well as China, India and the EU.

International Commercial Arbitration: This module considers the theoretical and institutional structure of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, examines the legal framework within which disputes are resolved and reviews the practice of international commercial arbitration.

Consumer Law: This module focuses on the main areas of legal liability and the pitfalls that can arise if an organisation does not comply with the relevant consumer protection rules both in the UK and Europe.

Intellectual Property Law: This module addresses the fundamentals of intellectual property law, the definition and scope of copyright; the authorship, ownership, duration and qualification for copyright protection.

Competition Law: This module focuses on the theory and law of competition, focusing on UK competition law, and EU competition law relating to the control of restrictive practices, vertical and horizontal restraints and abuse of a dominant position. Comparative regimes, in particular that of the US, are examined.

Industrial Property Law: This module examines the history and development of industrial property law in the UK, EU and internationally. It covers the law relating to trade secrets, patents, copyrights, design rights and trademarks.

World Trade Law: This module studies aspects of the regulation of international trade through the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organisation.

International Insurance Law: Insurance plays an important role in commerce and risk management. Insurance contracts are governed by the rules of general law of contract. The module explores the nature and scope of the contract of insurance, considers the general principles of insurance, and examines the relationships between parties to a contract.

International Taxation Law: This module studies the basic principles of income taxation of international transactions involving taxpayers of several European countries (including the UK, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Ireland), the US, Australia, Canada and Japan.

Employment Law: Modern employment law is complex, and imposes major compliance costs on employers. This module covers contract of employment, minimum wage legislation, discrimination against employees, and unfair dismissal actions before Employment Tribunals.

International Environmental Law: This module focuses on internationally recognised principles and values concerning environmental protection, and how they are translated into legally enforceable tools. Methods of environmental regulation are analysed and compared.

With these needs in mind, the MSc and MA Management and Finance programmes at Bangor are designed to develop participants' existing skills through a scheme of specialist advanced study. Sustainable development is a principal goal and a key policy feature of many of the major institutes and governments of the world. A key element of achieving sustainable development is the balance of Environmental, Economic and Social development drivers. This course will take an integrated view of environmental management within a business context and will provide the specialist interdisciplinary training that is required to fully integrate sustainable development objectives into businesses management. By integrating modules from Bangor Business School and The School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography, it will train students to be sophisticated environmental managers who can interpret legislative and audit requirements and deliver them in a manner conducive to continued economic development. The programme includes highly topical case studies from across these sectors reflecting changing strategies and alternative approaches.

Growing businesses need to adapt to environmental and technological changes. This major prepares you for the challenges of establishing and growing a business in today’s dynamic climate. We’ll help you build the framework for your new venture and provide you with the skills necessary to become an entrepreneurial leader. By graduation, you will develop key capabilities for success in the areas of new product and service development as well as, small and family business management.

Course structure

The MBA in Entrepreneurship program lasts one year, divided into three terms. Each term students complete five courses, including industrial visits and guest speaker sessions. In order to graduate, students must complete a management research methods module and a dissertation subject in addition to the other courses.

The Master of Entrepreneurship (MEntr) degree is a 15-month programme designed to support those with an entrepreneurial spirit who want to start an innovative new venture and who aspire to the entrepreneurial lifestyle.

The MEntr is based upon the premise that the knowledge and skills needed to survive and thrive in business can be taught while the attitudes required of entrepreneurs can be identified and encouraged.

Programme requirements

Part A - Five required papers:
ENTR 411 Introduction to Entrepreneurship (20 Points)
ENTR 412 Feasibility Analysis (20 Points)
ENTR 413 Finance for Entrepreneurs (20 Points)
ENTR 414 Marketing and Selling (20 Points)
ENTR 415 New Venture Strategy (20 Points)
Plus one of:
ENTR 420 Sustainable Entrepreneurship (20 Points)
ENTR 421 Technology and Entrepreneurship (20 Points)
TOUR 416 Tourism Entrepreneurship and Business (20 Points)

Part B:
ENTR 525 Business Project (60 Points)

Structure of the Programme

-Every programme of study shall satisfy the requirements set out in the MEntr Schedule.
-A candidate must pass the required papers in Part A sequentially.
-A candidate must pass all papers in Part A before commencing Part B.
-A candidate must pass the required papers in Part B sequentially.
-A candidate without sufficient grounding in specific areas may be directed by the Programme Director to either: attend short programmes of instruction, or: carry out prescribed reading and study.
-A formal examination may be required.
-Before commencing ENTR 525 in Part B, a candidate shall obtain approval from the Programme Director for the business idea and the proposed approach.
-A candidate may not present a paper or a business project report that has previously been accepted for another paper or qualification.
