Applied Technologies: Rapid Prototyping and Digital Technologies is a cross-disciplinary programme for creative practitioners interested in research into digital-making and manufacturing.

The aim of the course is to allow you to evaluate and engage with how emerging technologies such as rapid prototyping, generative design, 3d scanning and multi axis machining are changing creative industries and could help you evolve your personal practice. You will benefit from access to Ravensbourne’s state of the art digital prototyping facilities as well as tuition in computer aided design and manufacture and how these skills can be integrated with traditional making methods.

Course structure

1. Technology Issues – Within the technology issues unit, students will engage in 3-5 week project cycles that will allow them to explore 3d printing, 3d scanning and other rapid prototyping. These units are structured to encourage students to engage collaboratively with other students of the same and different disciplines.

2. Business and Innovation – Taught during the term prior to the major project unit this unit helps students develop an understanding of business and innovative practises in creative industries. It supports Applied Technologies students in turning their ideas into viable market propositions and long term business plans.

3. Research Process – This unit provides the grounding for the research and development skills needed for students’ individual projects.

4. Concept and Prototyping – Allows students to further develop their skills. To identify a specialist area related to digital manufacturing and to pursue a single line of enquiry, idea or theory and develop, investigate, challenge and test that concept.

5. Major project - The Major project represents the culmination of the students’ investigation and the final stage of the research strategy. This is a substantial piece of self-managed work that is underpinned by advanced practice based methodologies and processes.

This new degree programme is designed to equip graduates with a first degree in a relevant numerate subject with the technical, managerial and entrepreneurial skills and knowledge required to develop innovative engineering products and solutions and turn them to financial advantage.

Degree information

The programme combines a first-rate engineering education in areas that are key to developing new technologies (namely, advanced materials, renewable energy and biomedical engineering) with modules on project management and entrepreneurship to equip students with the fundamentals and skills required to manage innovation. Students undertake a group and an individual project with a focus on innovation.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of five core modules (75 credits), an optional module (15 credits), an individual research project (60 credits), and an innovation and Group Design Project (30 credits).

Dissertation/report
All students undertake an Innovation and Group Design Project and an individual research project, both of which culminate in a substantial dissertation. The research project revolves around student research interest; it often has industry input and develops high-level presentation, critical thinking and research skills.

Teaching and learning
This dynamic programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, laboratory and project work, workshops and problem classes, all of which frequently draw upon real-life industrial case studies. Assessment is through examinations, coursework, lab reports, presentations, the group design project and the individual research project.

The Faculty of Education has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 Secondary specialisms available. We have a well established partnership with over 800 schools and colleges across the North West region and beyond.

Our geography routes into teaching in secondary schools will develop trainees' understanding of school geography through a wide variety of university sessions and school-based learning. The PGCE views fieldwork as an essential part of school geography. Trainees will undertake a residential experience in September to consider the management of safe fieldwork. University based sessions model and encourage critical engagement of the use of new technologies, GIS, thinking skills and enquiry in school geography.

Subject to confirmation of DfE funding, we usually run free, pre-entry Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses for national priority subjects, including Geography. These will be identified at interview for applicants who need support in some areas and confirmed with a PGCE place offer.

A minimum of 120 days school based practice training is combined with university based training and periods of independent study. Trainees are supported throughout by university and placement mentors.

This course is available via University led and School Direct routes.

We also offer an Assessment-Only route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) aimed at experienced, but unqualified graduate teachers, wishing to complete a formal qualification.

Placement options

School placements are central to the course. As an intending teacher you will begin by developing professional awareness, understanding and skills common to learning and teaching in a variety of settings. You will begin to understand the inter-relationship between the school and its community.

Placements will be in at least two different schools or colleges and will range from inner city to rural settings, mixed and single gender schools, City Academies, Comprehensives and Selective Schools, 11-16, 11-18, sixth form and further education colleges. The Enrichment Phase also offers placements in settings other than schools.

Trainees also have the opportunity to apply for a four week enrichment experience overseas. These help to develop an international educational perspective and provide the chance to gain some teaching experience in an international school. Enrichment is in addition to PGCE units of study and opportunities may differ year on year, for example, in 2016 trainees were placed at British International Schools in Kazakhstan, Cyprus or Norway or public schools in Orleans, France.

About the Course

We offer a structured course of taught sessions that aim to develop geography teachers who are competent, confident, innovative and able to reflect honestly in terms of professional teaching practice.

The university-based element of the course examines the nature and content of school geography, investigating a range of approaches to teaching and learning. You are introduced to strategies for developing schemes of work and individual lesson plans, together with associated forms of assessment for learning.

Trainees experience a range of placements in all phases of the course, including two contrasting secondary schools, a primary school and some post-16 experience.

Your practical experience and application are given depth and coherence through the consideration of theoretical and educational issues, to enable you to gain knowledge and understanding of the school context, the pupil and the secondary classroom.

You will have opportunities to develop your:
-Knowledge and understanding of the content of the geography curriculum and the progression through the different key stages
-Knowledge and understanding of a wide range of teaching and learning methods

In our search for better medicines to improve healthcare in an ageing population, for safer agrochemicals to aid food production for a growing population, and for advanced materials for new technologies, it may come as no surprise to acknowledge that chemistry plays a dominant role. Without chemistry, the necessary scientific advances will simply not be made to meet these global challenges and to secure our future.

Chemistry is often viewed as demanding in its need for energy and natural resources. We have to ensure that chemistry is safe, efficient and, above all, sustainable – chemistry that is benign by design. Sustainability is an issue facing the entire global chemicals industry, our vision is to train a new generation of scientists to find innovative 'green' resource and energy efficient solutions that have the lowest possible environmental impact; demonstrate social responsibility; and make a positive contribution to economic growth.

This course builds upon our international track record in green chemistry, particularly in the fields of synthetic chemistry, catalysis, new technologies, materials science, process engineering and entrepeneurship. Course material covers all aspects of modern green and sustainable chemistry including feedstocks, energy, sustainable synthesis (including biocatalysis) and industrial process design. Formal lectures are complemented by a 60 credit project based in our world-leading research laboratories and designed to reinforce and apply many of the concepts delivered during lectures. This MSc programme is highly interdisciplinary. The principle objective of this MSc Green and Sustainable Chemistry is to train the next generation of scientists to appreciate, assess and address the challenges of sustainability across chemistry using industries through the implementation of robust, innovative science and technology.

Candidates will, therefore, develop an excellent operating knowledge of contemporary methods of synthesis, analysis and process design optimized for both energy and reaction mass efficiency. Programme summary

There are a lot of new and existing global problems related to the availability and quality of water for personal, agricultural and industrial use. And these problems require sustainable solutions with a minimal impact on the environment. Water technology has unfortunately not been a focal point of most academic research and education programmes, despite its enormous importance to society. Instead, the expertise of various research groups is usually concentrated on other processes and in some cases, only later dedicated to water treatment in spin-off projects. New technologies will be necessary to develop new concepts for the treatment of waste water. And also for the production of clean water from alternative sources like salt (sea) water, waste water or humid air in order to minimise the use of precious groundwater. These challenges require academically trained experts who can think out-of-the-box and help to find practical solutions in the near future. A dedicated joint Master Water Technology programme has been created to train and educate these experts.

The MSc Water Technology is situated in Leeuwarden, the capital of water technology, and is offered jointly by three Dutch universities: Wageningen University, the University of Twente and the University of Groningen. A combined technological approach, based on state-of-the-art universities in science and technology, will search for solutions to several developments within business and society; with a worldwide impact on the demand for and use of water. One dedicated Master programme with joint degree allows for flexibility and can be adapted to the changing needs of the labour market. Wageningen University offers a strong focus on environmental sciences, the University of Twente on science and technology, and the University of Groningen on fundamental sciences. Students will be educated in the multidisciplinary laboratory of the technological top institute for water technology called Wetsus.

The MSc Water Technology programme specifically targets students interested in beta science and technology. The programme offers a unique combination of scientific insights and technological applications from the field of Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering. This combined approach for problem solving within the global framework of water problems is an asset to the programme. The programme is a valuable addition for postgraduate students with a completed bachelor degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology; or in related fields with a strong knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry and/or biology, and with affinity of water processes. Students are challenged with examples and case studies of real (research) problems that they might encounter as water professionals.

Students apply for the MSc Water Technology programme at Wageningen University, but will be registered at the other two universities as well. They will have access to the facilities of all three universities. Upon the successful completion of the programme, students receive one joint degree MSc Water Technology issued by all participating universities.

Specialisations

There are no official specialisations within the programme Water Technology. Students specialise themselves by doing a thesis within one of the research fields. Some examples are: Priority compounds, Virus Control, Applied water physics, Desalination, Concentrates, Biofouling, Aquatic worms, Advanced waste water treatment, Algae, Separation at source, Resource recovery, Membrane processes and operation for wastewater treatment and reuse and Sensoring.

Your future career

This study domain is becoming more and more relevant due to the urgent need for new technologies to meet global water problems. Water technology for public drinking water production and sewage water treatment is a very large market. Furthermore, the largest use of fresh water is for irrigation purposes. The industrial water supply and industrial waste water treatment also represent a significant market. There is no question that businesses involved in water technology will grow tremendously. Besides this, human capital is a basic condition to guarantee the success and continuity of the development of sustainable technologies. In many EU countries, the lack of talented technological professionals is becoming an increasingly limiting factor. The programme prepares students for a professional position in the broad area of water technology. Graduates have good national and international career prospects in business and research.

Assessment

Assessment is undertaken in all units to check that you have met (or are working towards meeting) the standards expected of all students.

Each unit of study has three summative assessment points and when each is marked you will be provided with feedback to show you where you are meeting/exceeding the standards and where/how you can/should make further improvement.

The final assessment in each of the taught units is a formal written examination. Elsewhere, a range of assessment methods are used. Some may be familiar (e.g. laboratory reports) while others may be less familiar (e.g. research proposals, poster/oral presentations) but each is designed to build upon and extend what is expected of students at postgraduate level.

Careers

In addition to developing your specialist knowledge and understanding, there is an emphasis on developing your approach and attitude to working by emphasising and encouraging the professional standards expected by employers.
