Labelled by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), AMIS is a Master program in Advanced Materials for Innovation and Sustainability which explores the theme of “Substitution of critical or toxic materials in products for optimized performance”. It also covers the topics of “Material chain optimization for end-of-life products” and “Product and services design for the circular economy” - all of which are central themes of the AMIS. The primary focus of the AMIS program is metal and mineral raw materials. Bio-based and polymer materials are studied in view of their substitution potential. Other materials are also analyzed in the context of multimaterial product recycling. In addition, the AMIS program includes a solid package of courses and project work in innovation and entrepreneurship.

Program structure

Mobility is integrated within the two-year program, during which students study at two of the consortium partner universities. Upon completion of the program, graduates are awarded 120 ECTS and a double degree delivered by two of the five partner institutions where they studied. Students begin the Master program at Grenoble INP, Aalto University or T.U. Darmstadt. In their second year, students specialize in another partner university:

  • To attend the specialization year offered at the University of Bordeaux, prospective students must attend the first year at either Aalto University or the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Smartphones and social media, digital networks and big data, gamification and mobile platforms – new media continue to change the way we live, work and communicate. This programme interrogates the impact of digital technologies on individuals and society, and provides you with the skills and knowledge to be able to think critically and creatively about new media.

Working both individually and in teams, you will learn about diverse digital media techniques and processes, including coding and hacking, web design, mapping and visualisation, scraping and mining, interactive narratives, animation, digital ethnography, action research, prototyping and iterative design, representation, and more. Through an applied, hands-on approach, you will gain an understanding of the social, cultural and economic roles of new media, and explore what it is like to work in the new media industries.

With a range of optional modules to choose from, you will also be able to expand your knowledge into areas such as multimedia journalism, cinema and photography, political and promotional communication, feminism and the media, and many more. Taught by expert practitioners and researchers, you will gain the knowledge and skills to thrive in this dynamic, fast-paced sector.Our School has a range of fantastic facilities to support your studies. The 58-seat Phil Taylor Cinema is equipped with Dolby Digital sound and high-definition projection facilities, as well as projectors for 16mm and 35mm film.

You can also work on your own projects in our 44 editing suites, equipped with Avid Media Composer editing software and Adobe Creative Cloud. The fully equipped TV studio also has a large green screen area, lighting and photo-flash facilities. We also have a track and dolly, sliders, Glidecam and various cranes, and you’ll have access to a new photographic dark room.

We also run a loans service where you can borrow a range of HD digital camcorders and various Canon stills cameras to help with your project work.

Course content

Depending on your previous experience, you may need to take the module New Media Production Skills to develop your knowledge of visual design software, HTML, CSS, PHP, WordPress, Javascript and animation. The module isn’t assessed so it will appear in your transcript, but won’t count towards your classification.

In each semester you’ll study core modules that build your knowledge of new media contexts and practice. You’ll consider the relationship between new media and contemporary culture and the interactive forms and practices that are emerging. Then you’ll gain practical production, project management and critical skills and respond to new media briefs in collaborative projects.

You’ll then have the chance to broaden your approach with your choice of optional modules, from photography and cinematics to political communication, television narratives and public relations in society.

To demonstrate the skills you’ve gained, you’ll also undertake a major independent project. You can choose to submit a dissertation and take classes on research methods throughout the year, or you can work on a sustained, practical new media project with a written element.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll complete the MA over two years, instead of one, taking fewer modules each year.

Assess the meanings and consequences of new media

New media produced by vast and rapidly expanding creative and commercial industries have become an important part of many everyday activities. Would you like to explore how they are changing our daily practices and cultures?

During the one-year Master’s programme in New Media & Digital Culture, you will delve into the many aspects of what it means to live in an age of new media. Guided by an international team of experienced scholars, you will assist with current research projects and learn to reflect critically on how present-day cultures are shaped by social media, data, games, internet activism, apps, data visualisations, mobile devices, algorithms, and participatory platforms.

The programme pivots around three major contemporary features of new media technologies and its relationship to culture and society, namely: the mobile/urbanaspect, the ludic/games aspect, and the software/data aspect. While the programme highlights the overlaps and synergies between these three aspects we also offer students the opportunity to specialise in a MA profile which relates to these three aspects. Engaging with such a profile means following a set trajectory of courses and a profile-related internship and thesis. An example of such a profile is Media, Data and Society (more information here), a co-partnership with the Utrecht Data School.

Both our general programme and its more specific profile trajectories cater to a job market and an industry interested in graduates who are capable of critical engagement with the cultural implications of the complex media culture we live in. To facilitate both in-depth knowledge about new media and digital culture with more practical hands-on experience, you will also complete a research internship towards starting a promising career.

Moderately sized groups of students, individual tutoring, and the chance to participate in international research projects provide you with multiple ways to develop your skills, explore your interests, and achieve valuable academic and personal results. The aim of the course is to allow you to evaluate and engage with how emerging technologies such as rapid prototyping, generative design, 3d scanning and multi axis machining are changing creative industries and could help you evolve your personal practice. You will benefit from access to Ravensbourne’s state of the art digital prototyping facilities as well as tuition in computer aided design and manufacture and how these skills can be integrated with traditional making methods.

2. Business and Innovation – Taught during the term prior to the major project unit this unit helps students develop an understanding of business and innovative practises in creative industries. It supports Applied Technologies students in turning their ideas into viable market propositions and long term business plans.

3. Research Process – This unit provides the grounding for the research and development skills needed for students’ individual projects.

4. Concept and Prototyping – Allows students to further develop their skills. To identify a specialist area related to digital manufacturing and to pursue a single line of enquiry, idea or theory and develop, investigate, challenge and test that concept.

5. Major project - The Major project represents the culmination of the students’ investigation and the final stage of the research strategy. This is a substantial piece of self-managed work that is underpinned by advanced practice based methodologies and processes.

About this degree

The programme combines a first-rate engineering education in areas that are key to developing new technologies (namely, advanced materials, renewable energy and biomedical engineering) with modules on project management and entrepreneurship to equip students with the fundamentals and skills required to manage innovation. Students undertake a group and an individual project with a focus on innovation.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

Teaching and learning

The Faculty of Education has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 Secondary specialisms available. We have a well established partnership with over 800 schools and colleges across the North West region and beyond.

Our geography routes into teaching in secondary schools will develop trainees' understanding of school geography through a wide variety of university sessions and school-based learning. The PGCE views fieldwork as an essential part of school geography. Trainees will undertake a residential experience in September to consider the management of safe fieldwork. University based sessions model and encourage critical engagement of the use of new technologies, GIS, thinking skills and enquiry in school geography.

Subject to confirmation of DfE funding, we usually run free, pre-entry Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses for national priority subjects, including Geography. These will be identified at interview for applicants who need support in some areas and confirmed with a PGCE place offer.

A minimum of 120 days school based practice training is combined with university based training and periods of independent study. Trainees are supported throughout by university and placement mentors.

This course is available via University led and School Direct routes.

We also offer an Assessment-Only route to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) aimed at experienced, but unqualified graduate teachers, wishing to complete a formal qualification.

Placement options

School placements are central to the course. As an intending teacher you will begin by developing professional awareness, understanding and skills common to learning and teaching in a variety of settings. You will begin to understand the inter-relationship between the school and its community.

Placements will be in at least two different schools or colleges and will range from inner city to rural settings, mixed and single gender schools, City Academies, Comprehensives and Selective Schools, 11-16, 11-18, sixth form and further education colleges. The Enrichment Phase also offers placements in settings other than schools.

Trainees also have the opportunity to apply for a four week enrichment experience overseas. These help to develop an international educational perspective and provide the chance to gain some teaching experience in an international school. Enrichment is in addition to PGCE units of study and opportunities may differ year on year, for example, in 2016 trainees were placed at British International Schools in Kazakhstan, Cyprus or Norway or public schools in Orleans, France.

About the Course

We offer a structured course of taught sessions that aim to develop geography teachers who are competent, confident, innovative and able to reflect honestly in terms of professional teaching practice.

The university-based element of the course examines the nature and content of school geography, investigating a range of approaches to teaching and learning. You are introduced to strategies for developing schemes of work and individual lesson plans, together with associated forms of assessment for learning.

Trainees experience a range of placements in all phases of the course, including two contrasting secondary schools, a primary school and some post-16 experience.

Your practical experience and application are given depth and coherence through the consideration of theoretical and educational issues, to enable you to gain knowledge and understanding of the school context, the pupil and the secondary classroom.

In our search for better medicines to improve healthcare in an ageing population, for safer agrochemicals to aid food production for a growing population, and for advanced materials for new technologies, it may come as no surprise to acknowledge that chemistry plays a dominant role. Without chemistry, the necessary scientific advances will simply not be made to meet these global challenges and to secure our future.

Chemistry is often viewed as demanding in its need for energy and natural resources. We have to ensure that chemistry is safe, efficient and, above all, sustainable – chemistry that is benign by design. Sustainability is an issue facing the entire global chemicals industry, our vision is to train a new generation of scientists to find innovative 'green' resource and energy efficient solutions that have the lowest possible environmental impact; demonstrate social responsibility; and make a positive contribution to economic growth.

This course builds upon our international track record in green chemistry, particularly in the fields of synthetic chemistry, catalysis, new technologies, materials science, process engineering and entrepeneurship. Course material covers all aspects of modern green and sustainable chemistry including feedstocks, energy, sustainable synthesis (including biocatalysis) and industrial process design. Formal lectures are complemented by a 60 credit project based in our world-leading research laboratories and designed to reinforce and apply many of the concepts delivered during lectures. This MSc programme is highly interdisciplinary. It capitalises on strong established links between Chemistry, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Nottingham Business School to provide both breadth and depth in the scope of the MSc degree.

The principle objective of this MSc Green and Sustainable Chemistry is to train the next generation of scientists to appreciate, assess and address the challenges of sustainability across chemistry using industries through the implementation of robust, innovative science and technology.

Candidates will, therefore, develop an excellent operating knowledge of contemporary methods of synthesis, analysis and process design optimized for both energy and reaction mass efficiency. Graduates will be equipped with the tools and experience to critically evaluate comparable reaction pathways and make evidenced decision in the design and execution of efficient chemical processes key to the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, fine chemical and other chemical using industries. Furthermore, upon completing this degree, students will be able to make effective use of electronic communication and information search & retrieval to facilitate the development and dissemination of key critical skills with which to assess and analyse complex problems.
