During this period you will specialise in a subject area of your choice through your dissertation project.

You will be provided with research methods training over the autumn and spring teaching periods, providing you with the ability to critically evaluate management research and to plan effective research projects.

The dissertation enables you to deepen your understanding of an aspect of innovation management or entrepreneurship. Many students choose to investigate topics that they intend to focus on in the next stage of their career. For some students this will provide them with the opportunity to carry out intensive research pertinent to a venture they wish to establish following their graduation.

Programme Assessment

Our friendly and supportive environment uses formal lectures, workshops, and seminars to provide the basis for the development of relevant knowledge, further enhanced by activity-based case studies. We utilise both theory and practice-oriented teaching. Teaching and learning is through weekly half-day sessions, depending on whether you are taking the course full or part-time.

For each unit you will be assessed in a way that will deepen your knowledge of the subjects covered. This will involve you thinking and working in an original way to overcome genuine problems. At the end of the course you will also complete a dissertation which can be related to your workplace, your future career, or a desired business venture.

You will focus on applying the latest technology and management systems to current engineering issues. These include the ability to respond rapidly to changes in the global market by inventing products that address agile, environmental and management control issues. You will use simulated automation and management systems to analyse problems and test your solutions.

Your first semester will concentrate on process control and the second will focus on new product development. You will have access to excellent equipment and resources, including a rapid prototyping machine, programmable logic controllers, a Vicon motion capture system and the latest engineering software such as FlexSim and Autodesk Design Suites.

The Product Design Enterprise MSc was developed to interest graduates from a business or design background. To enhance knowledge and understanding of the principles underlying professional product design, and enable the student to develop appropriate entrepreneurial skills enabling viable manufacturing, marketing or business enterprises.

The programme requires the student to undertake 10 taught modules and to complete a major project of approximately 15,000 words. Each taught module involves up to 22 contact hours per week, including lectures, tutorials, seminars and project classes. The course will run from October to September with examinations/assessments held in December and March/April. The programme creates a unique opportunity to experience the challenges throughout the new product development process and to develop a mutual understanding about the rationales on the technology as well as on the business management side. There is a broad empirical basis that such a mutual understanding is a key prerequisite for successful cooperation between R&D and marketing and ultimately for innovation success. The aim of the programme is therefore to enhance students' understandings about strategies, structures, processes, people and cultures to develop successful innovations and to enhance the innovative capability of firms.

Programme structure

The programme has a duration of 2 years and consists of 4 semesters.

1st semester: Prerequisite courses

The student will get an insight to Management Research Method. The learning objective of this course is to enable you to conduct empirical business research in a valid and reliable manner.

The students will also follow a course which is an innovation challenge. This course aims to give students experience working with real life innovation challenges formulated by participating companies and organisations. By completing this course, students will have obtained a thorough understanding of the central phases of the innovative process and their challenges

In addition the course Classic and Contemporary Readings in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, will enable students to create two forms of competences. 1) An improved ability to read, question, and form conclusions from research-based literature, and 2) an overview of the central classic and contemporary literature in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Finally the first semester also introduces the course, Financing Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The aim of this course is to enable students to understand and perform the crucial tasks of planning and acquiring financing for innovative and entrepreneurial projects, products and/or services.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

The second semester has an enhanced focus on innovation.

One of the courses is Managing Innovation.This course will give students an understanding of the fundamentals of managing creativity and innovation at individual, team and firm level. Students will acquire knowledge about central concepts of innovation and of how to manage innovation in terms of organisational structures, competences, and processes of innovation.

Another course will introduce Appropriating Innovation – Managing Intellectual Property. The aim of this course is to provide students with the essential, minimum knowledge of patents, copyright, trademarks and trade secrecy to survive and prosper in business.

The students will also be introduced to the course, Entrepreneurship Theory - Strategies of New Venture Creation and Growth. The objective of this course is to provide students with a broad understanding of the theories that make up the field of entrepreneurship research. In order to do so, the course introduces both the history of entrepreneurship research and the latest theory developments.

3rd semester: Electives or study abroad

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

4th semester: Final thesis

The fourth semester is devoted to the master's thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and get a chance to concentrate on and specialize in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

This MSc course prepares students for a career in dynamic food businesses to play a lead role in the analysis of key sectorial issues and strategic management of the food industry. The balance of modules on this programme reflects the global nature of the food industry. Students will expand their knowledge of food, the food consumer, innovation in food and the decision-making processes in companies that develop, brand, distribute, and sell food products. Through practical application, this programme will equip graduates with analytical, communication, business and presentation skills, which are required and highly valued by the industry. Graduates from the MSc in Food Business and Innovation course pursue employment opportunities in the food sector (international corporations, SMEs, start-ups and food agencies) and non-food sector (banks, market research firms and higher education) as the skills acquired are highly transferable.

The MSc in Food Business and Innovation is delivered over 12 months and includes a Food Industry Centered Research Project.

PRACTICALITIES & ASSESSMENT

PRACTICALITIES

The MSc in Food Business and Innovation is a full-time 12 month programme. In Part I, you will need to be available to attend classes and seminars from Monday to Friday (inclusive). During Part II of the programme, you will complete a full-time Applied Food Industry Centred Research Project under the guidance of an academic and industry mentor.

The MSc in Food Business and Innovation programme is taught by academic staff of the Department of Food Business and Development and Management and Marketing. In addition, invited guest lecturers, adjunct professors and experts with a broad range of national and international experience will also contribute to the programme.

ASSESSMENT

You will be assessed by examinations, continuous assessment and a Food Industry Centred Research Project report.
