Graduate training is very different from undergraduate courses. It is based on individual needs and abilities, and is designed to help you to think clearly, originally and practically, and to prepare you for leadership in science. We teach our graduate students how to plan and carry out cutting-edge research. Cambridge is an amazing place to learn how to do research. Visiting speakers and collaborators come from all over the world, and there are simply too many seminars for one person to attend! We have a careful system of monitoring the individual progress of each student; everyone has both a principal supervisor and associated advisor, and there are weekly student-led seminars.

Research training within the Department has several essential components, the first and foremost being the research project itself, to which you will make a significant contribution. This will give you experience and training in a variety of experimental and/or clinical research techniques, but will also teach you how to organise research, plan experiments, and read and digest the scientific literature relevant to your research work. Most research groups have weekly or fortnightly meetings in which all members discuss each others work.

However, other skills are also important. You will be required to attend seminars and round-tables, and you will have the opportunity to go to scientific meetings both in the UK and abroad. These bring you into direct contact with prominent and active scientists in your field from around the world.

You will also give scientific talks yourself. Audiences for such talks are often quite large, and the discussion of your paper is often very lively. You will also be expected to attend courses, either directly related to your research (for example, they might teach you a specific skill or expand your theoretical knowledge) or teach you general skills which are important for well-qualified scientist to know (for example, how to write a scientific paper, use databases, or interact with the media). There are a large number of these courses, and many of them are run by the the Graduate School of Life Sciences, but the Department has its own series of seminars and workshops and an annual Spring School, which is focused each year on a different topic.

We expect our graduate students to publish in high quality journals, and nearly all of them do so.

Format

You will be assigned a principal supervisor, whom you should expect to see on a regular basis. The department will also appoint a second supervisor whom you will meet less regularly. Typically the second supervisor provides expertise in a related field.

There is a weekly seminar programme that is given by all graduates students in the department. MPhil students get to present their work towards the end of their course. They receive formal feedback on their presentation from the course director.

All students attend regular laboratory meetings with their research group, have one-to-one meetings with their supervisor and co-supervisor, and give a seminar to the department which is scored by the audience. The Director of Training meets all students at least once a year.

Assessment

The MPhil in Medical Science is examined by dissertation and viva. The dissertation must be no longer than 20,000 words and must satisfy the examiners that the candidate can design and carry out an original investigation, assess and interpret the results obtained, and place the work in the wider perspective of the subject.

The main focus of this Research Master is to train students to become independent researchers. For this purpose, a large proportion of the programme is devoted to two research projects in which the students are embedded in successful research groups to conduct their own research.

The programme offers three tracks:
- Animal and Human Behaviour (B-track);
- Cognitive Neuroscience and Cognitive Modelling (C-track);
- Molecular and Clinical Neuroscience (N-track).

You will become an expert in one of these fields. However, because of the integrated courses and links between these tracks you will also get a unique and truly multi-disciplinary training. The BCN Research Master is one of the the best Neuroscience MSc programmes of the Netherlands (Keuzegids Masters 2015/Dutch Higher Education Guide 2015).

Admission to the programme is highly selective and based on the applicants academic credentials as well as motivation. Every application is screened by the Admissions Board.

The MSc programme in Neurorehabilitation has been designed to encourage reflection, self-reliance and in depth learning, preparing students for the challenges of employment within a changing health and social care system.

Teaching, learning and assessment are designed to ensure that successful students are able to:

Search and critically appraise appropriate sources of knowledge and expertise within their specialist academic areas.
Apply academic and key transferable skills.
Reflect on own learning experience.

The taught modules are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each week during the two 12-week university teaching terms, with students undertaking the dissertation following successful completion of the modules. Full-time mode of study requires two days per week, while part-time mode of study requires one day per week attendance on campus.

Student learning is supported by web-based resources on Blackboard Learn with provision of lecture and reading links and relevant resources to support learning.

Programme, and module descriptors delineate learning outcomes to ensure clarity and promote the active preparation of students.

Neuroscience is a discipline concerned with the scientific study of the nervous system in health and disease. Research in the neurosciences is of considerable clinical impact considering the debilitating and costly effects of neurological and psychiatric disease. In this regard, a major goal of modern neuroscience research is to elucidate the underlying causes (genetic or environmental) of major brain diseases, and to produce more effective treatments for major psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and depression, and neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, motor neurone disease and epilepsy. Improved treatment strategies for brain disorders relies entirely on increased understanding gained from research which integrates molecular, cellular and clinical aspects of disease. In this regard it is clear that interdisciplinary approaches are necessary to understand the complex processes which underlie brain function in health and disease. This interdisciplinary philosophy is adopted in the delivery of our M.Sc. programme in Neuroscience, which is underpinned by the diverse research expertise available within Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience (TCIN).

Course Content:

This one-year M.Sc. course aims to provide a multidisciplinary training in the neurosciences, in topics ranging from molecular to behavioural. The course is ideal for students wishing to extend their specialised knowledge, and for those wishing to convert from their original degree discipline. The programme will equip participants with the skills necessary to progress into a career in biomedical, pharmaceutical or neuropsychological research. Instruction for the course consists of approximately 200 contact hours over two academic Terms to include lectures, laboratory practical sessions, journal club workshops and student-based seminars. Modules are assessed by a mixture of in course assessment and written examinations.

Specialist modules covered include:

Form and Function of the Nervous System, Biochemical Basis of Neuropharmacology, Neuropharmacology, Drug Development, Advanced Neuroimmunology, Experimental Neuroscience, Scientific Literature Skills, Neural Engineering, Neuroimaging Technology, Current Topics in Neuroscience, Cellular Neuroscience, and Research Skills.

The third Term consists of a research project on novel aspects of Neuroscience. Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience is a dynamic research environment with research spanning molecular/cellular neuroscience to clinical/translational neuroscience. Projects across these research areas may be undertaken in consultation with an expert supervisor. For students interested in a project in cellular/molecular neuroscience a range of cellular techniques such as tissue culture, immunocytochemistry, western immunobloting and immunoprecipitation, confocal microscopy, Immunoassays, flow cytometry, Real-time PCR, and high performance liquid chromatography are available. In addition, some projects will involve assessing behavioural, electrophysiological and neurochemical endpoints using in vivo models of neurological and psychiatric disease. For those with an interest in experimentation on human subjects, projects will be offered utilizing techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging and neurocognitive testing. A selection of national and international projects is also available, which involve collaboration with other academic institutes and pharmaceutical companies, in Ireland, UK and across Europe.

The programme provides multidisciplinary training in a range of neuroscience topics, especially those that are relevant to psychiatry and neurology, through three taught compulsory fundamental modules, one taught specialised module (from a choice of seven) and an approximately 20 week research project. - Course purpose -

Neuroscience as a degree subject is still under-represented in the undergraduate sector and, consequently, most students coming onto the programme have degrees in subjects other than neuroscience. The aim of the programme is to extend the students' theoretical knowledge of the neurosciences and to develop, through their chosen research project, the practical skills that they may wish to practise in their future careers. This may be in further full-time study in an academic research environment or employment in an academic, clinical or pharmaceutical organisation.

- Course format and assessment -

Each of the Fundamental modules (A1-A3) is assessed with a written examination and a coursework essay. The Specialised modules are assessed with a written examination and the writing of an abstract to an unseen published paper (presented without the abstract). The research project is assessed by a research report, a laboratory notebook and a poster presentation.

Career prospects

Past students have obtained PhD positions both in the UK and overseas, entered medical school, the pharmaceutical industry, or trained as clinical psychologists; clinicians have obtained clinical research positions.

The School of Dental Sciences and COHR

You will spend most of your time within the School of Dental Sciences and the COHR, working within research teams led by experts in their field in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

We combine world-class clinical and research facilities with an open environment where scholars, clinicians and researchers benefit from working side-by-side. Our focus is on multidisciplinary translational research, work that is relevant to real life.

COHR has a particular focus on understanding molecular and cellular mechanisms and translating these into clinical settings. Evaluation of clinical, community and economic strategies to improve public health and inform a wider health agenda is a central research theme. Within COHR there is a Collaborating Centre for the World Health Organization for Nutrition and Oral Health. Research projects are strongly aligned to the Centre's main research themes:
-Translational oral biosciences
-Oral healthcare and epidemiology
-Biomaterials and biological interfaces

COHR is involved in a number of industrial collaborations. We also work together with the Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit to provide planning, design and implementation of clinical trials in oral health.

Delivery

Certain taught elements of the programme are compulsory, eg laboratory safety. Other taught components are agreed between you and your supervisors depending on your skills and the requirements of the research project.

You are expected to work 40 hours per week with an annual holiday entitlement of 35 days, which includes statutory and bank holidays.

Laboratory work needing to be undertaken outside of normal working hours can be arranged with prior agreement. All our research students are encouraged to attend research seminars and events held within COHR, the Faculty of Medical Sciences Graduate School and your relevant Biomedical Research Institute.

The School of Dental Sciences at Newcastle is one of the most modern and best equipped in the country, occupying a spacious, purpose-built facility. The School is in the same building as the Dental Hospital, adjacent to the Medical School and Royal Victoria Infirmary teaching hospital, forming one of the largest integrated teaching and hospital complexes in the country.

Research excellence

Research across the subject of Psychology attempts to advance our understanding of behaviour and the underlying mental processes and brain functions at multiple levels of analysis. This effort entails the integration of diverse approaches and paradigms from experimental psychology, cognitive science and the cognitive neurosciences.

We are committed to producing basic and applied research of the highest quality with a focus on three main areas:
-An interdisciplinary effort to advance the understanding of the complex relationship between the brain, cognition and behaviour. This brings together researchers with an interest in cognitive neuroscience, functional neuroimaging, neuropsychology and computational modelling. The Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience (CCNi) aims to develop new methods for understanding brain mechanisms, and to train interdisciplinary scientists in the use of those methods and techniques.
-The new science of social interactions, a science that blends behavioural, computational and neuroimaging techniques to investigate human social function, communication and cooperation. Our research examines a range of mechanisms that underlie social interaction: from gestures and expressive signals, from the face, voice and body to language-based communication. We have special interest in how such local interactions affect the dynamics and structure of larger scale social networks.
-Further research areas include sleep, language, visual perception, computational methods, memory, thought and social interaction.

Career prospects

As this programme complies with ESRC requirements, successful graduates from the programme are eligible for +3 ESRC PhD studentships. The majority of our graduates have obtained PhD funding or secured a research or teaching position. Others have opted for further professional training in specialised fields of psychology. Some graduates have used the qualification and skills to advance in their current employment.

Graduates of this programme have gone on to positions such as: Assistant Psychologist at NHS and PhD studentships at Glasgow University or other HEIs in UK or abroad.

It offers a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which will help you develop as a clinician in psychiatric practice. You can expect to gain significant opportunities in continuing professional development by choosing to study modules relevant to the field you work in which can also be taken as short courses. You will also end the course in preparation of Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych).

Clinical lectures focus on the principles of Psychiatric Practice. The course is intense and will require students to be "self directed" learners.

The MFA in Fine Art is a studio-based, research-centred programme with a critical studies component, supported by studio-led seminars arising from the creative and critical interests of students and staff. Students are admitted into painting, sculpture or fine art media (which includes electronic media, photography, print, film and video).

Degree information

The programme provides an intellectual and creative environment in which talented fine art graduates may develop their individual potential as professional artists and researchers in their chosen studio area; whilst developing a critical awareness of the broadening intellectual and cultural contexts of fine art.

The Fine Art MFA is an integrated degree programme and does not have a modular structure.

The programme consists of studio work (100%) in the student's chosen subject area, and critical studies which are assessed on a pass/fail basis. There are no core or optional modules for this programme.

Exhibition
Assessment is by submission of the critical study and final examination of studio work in the form of an exhibition.

Teaching and learning
A studio-based programme, students develop their work with tutorial/technical assistance according to individual need. The taught component is delivered through lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops, but primarily demands individual investigation. Year two prioritises supervised individual research.
