The Master’s Degree in Clinical and Experimental Sciences of the Nervous System is a blended master’s degree in the field of the neurosciences with three specialities:
-Research into Neurotoxicology and Neuropsychopharmacology (research track). This speciality aims to train future specialists to research into evaluating and characterising the effects of neuroactive substances(effects of neurotoxins from environmental pollutants on living organisms, effects of medicines and abusive drugs on behaviour). The objective is to provide students with multidisciplinary training and the basic and methodological knowledge that enable them to work as researchers in the field of neurotoxicology and psychopharmacology.
-Invasive Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy (professional track). The general aim of this speciality is to learn to examine and treat patients who suffer from problems of neuromuscular pain. Other aims are to use muscle palpation to identify tense bands of muscle and the most common locations for myofascial trigger points (MTP) and to attribute a patient’s pain to the presence of MTP in the corresponding muscles thanks to a knowledge of their pain patterns and the most important semiological characteristics. One of the primary objectives is to correctly apply the main techniques for the conservative and invasive (dry puncture) treatment of MTPs: that is to say, identifying and avoiding the contraindications, risks and complications generated by the various puncture techniques.
-Neurorehabilitation (professional track). The translational objectives of this speciality are to describe the etiopathological reasons for neurological, sensory and cognitive disorders based on experimental data applied to therapeutic situations. This should enable these disorders to be treated using appropriate and well-founded rehabilitation techniques. One of the main objectives is to use such cutting-edge technologies as robotics.

Student Profile

This master’s degree is designed for two types of students: on the one hand, recent graduates who have scientific concerns and who wish to work in the field of knowledge in general and, specifically, on the central and peripheral nervous system; and, on the other, the online component of the research track is designed specifically for professionals who are already working but who would like to do a doctorate on the nervous systems to increase their professional potential.

The aim of the professional specialities is to train professionals to examine and treat patients who suffer from neuromuscular pain and give them extensive knowledge of the central and peripheral nervous system in pathological situations so that they can suggest possible therapies.

These specialities are designed for health professionals who want to acquire new knowledge and abilities to improve their daily practice on issues of the central or peripheral nervous system and who also want to have sufficient scientific training to be able to opt for a doctoral degree related to their profession so that they can lead a clinical research group.

Degree information

Students will study modules in the pathophysiology and neuroimaging relating to cerebrovascular disease; clinical manifestations of stroke; treatment and service delivery; neurorehabilitation; epidemiology and prevention of stroke and statistical methods in health research.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (120 credits), and a research project/dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma, six core taught modules (120 credits) is available. The research project requires a written dissertation, an oral and a poster presentation at the Queen Square Symposium or similar conference.

The course can be taken entirely by distance with only a minimal amount of set hours for online contact. Students can set their own study schedule within each module's delivery time, so you can fit the course around working life.

Two optional modules include approximately 5 days of face-to-face time. You can choose to attend conference days across other modules but all lectures and other resources are posted online to enable an entirely flexible and distance based learning.

Format

This Masters is one of several distance learning courses offered by UWE Bristol that make use of our established interactive Blackboard portal.

The majority of modules will be posted online, so you can access video lectures, virtual classrooms, forums and other resources from wherever you are. You will submit assignments online throughout the course. In addition to self-directed study, some virtual learning will be in small groups and with partners.

The face-to-face days that are part of the optional modules will be delivered in a workshop style, giving you the opportunity to practice your skills.

On the optional conference days, teaching will be delivered though lectures and facilitated group work. These conference days will be captured and made available online for all students.

Assessment

The course uses a range of assessments chosen to help you develop skills for the real world, including presentations, posters, vivas and written assignments.

Careers / Further study

On graduation, you will have the qualification required to advance to Band 6, 7 or 8 within the NHS and its partners.

Overseas students will be able to register with the UK's Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and be eligible for work in the UK or Europe.

The Master of Physiotherapy (MPhty endorsed) programme endorsed in one of the specialist areas (Acupuncture, Neurorehabilitation, Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy, Occupational Health Physiotherapy or Sports Physiotherapy) aims to advance the student’s clinical reasoning and patient management skills beyond that of the entry level practitioner and provide one of the prerequisites necessary to achieve specialisation. The one-semester research components that may comprise the design and implementation of a small research project, a case series, a data-based clinical review, a systematic review, or a critical review under the supervision of a member of staff, will ensure that the student is research enabled and ready to embrace evidence based practice in the performance of their career.

Alternatively, students can undertake two papers from the approved schedule and a thesis to obtain a research master's (MPhty). The School of Physiotherapy has a strong postgraduate research programme currently supporting numerous master's research students working on topics that range from neurological disorders to anatomical studies. We aim to provide students with a high level of knowledge and experience in order to help them develop their own research skills whether using qualitative or quantitative methodologies for statistical analysis, lab-based studies or community work, prevalence studies or intervention trialling – our aim is to have students complete their master,s confident in their abilities to conduct research and assess relevant literature and practices, whether this leads to PhD study in the future or to more assured clinical practice.

Information for new applicants

This qualification is available to registered physiotherapists. Domestic students must have a current Annual Practising Certificate from the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand. International students must obtain Special Purpose Scope of Practice from the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand before arriving in New Zealand.

For the endorsed Master's, distance based students must be practising physiotherapy whilst undertaking the clinical paper in Year 2 of the programme and should note that some papers involved in this qualification involve attending residential blocks in Dunedin and phoning in on audioconferences. On-campus students will be based at the School of Physiotherapy in Dunedin.

Students enrolling for this programme should take care to enrol for the on-campus or Distance versions of the papers as appropriate.

For the research Master's, students must have a supervisor for the special topic paper and the thesis. For assistance with finding a supervisor please contact the Research Administrator. Before acceptance can be granted applicants must work with their potential supervisor to submit either a draft proposal or a project title with their application.

For the endorsed Master's, students must have a supervisor and submit a draft proposal for the research component 6 months prior to undertaking this paper.

Applications normally close on 31 October, however late applications may be considered.

Subject to approval, the following qualification will replace the Master of Physiotherapy (Manipulative Physiotherapy) from 2013: Master of Physiotherapy (Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy. For information on how to apply for this qualification please contact the Academic Administrator.

Structure of the Programme

The programme shall consist of either:
-PHTY 501 or PHTY 545; PHTY 610, and a thesis embodying the results of one year of full-time or equivalent part-time supervised research (unendorsed option).
OR
-Approved papers, as prescribed in the Schedule for the area of specialisation concerned, to a total value of 180 points (endorsed option).

A candidate may be permitted to substitute approved papers for one or more of the PHTY papers prescibed for an endorsement in the Schedule, provided that at least 50% of the programme is specific to the subject of the endorsement. A candidate whose qualification for entry to the programme is a Postgraduate Diploma in Physiotherapy or equivalent may be exempted from all or some of the required papers.

A candidate may not present a thesis or dissertation which has previously been accepted for another degree. The programme of study, the topic of the thesis, dissertation, or research project, and the supervisors of the research must be approved by the Board of Studies in Physiotherapy.

For a thesis, the research should be of a kind that a diligent and competent student should complete within one year of full-time study.

The Department of Psychology provides a world-class research environment for postgraduate students in Biological, Cognitive, Social or Developmental Psychology along with more applied aspects such as Educational Psychology, Forensic/Criminological Psychology, Neuroscience (including Neurorehabilitation) and Health Psychology. Much of our research is interdisciplinary both within the department and outside of the department.

When you apply to study for a degree by research you will be asked to submit an outline research proposal. Research students normally have both a primary and additional research supervisor, or two primary co-supervisors, as their supervisory team. Programme Description

With approval from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) this programme allows you to gain the expertise and knowledge to become a practising physiotherapist.

The programme of study addresses the main areas of contemporary physiotherapy practice, namely neuromusculoskeletal, cardiovascular and respiratory and neurorehabilitation. You will learn to think independently and problem-solve in a clinical capacity.

Study within the University is interspersed with clinical placements where you will acquire comprehensive hands-on experience.

On successful completion of the MSc Physiotherapy (pre-registration) programme, graduates will be eligible to apply for membership of the CSP as well as registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Assessment

A number of assessment methods are used in the programme, including coursework, practical examination, presentations and MSc Dissertation.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates have found employment throughout the UK in both the NHS and private practice and have also gained employment overseas. Some of our graduates have also become involved in areas of clinical research.

Our programme is internationally acknowledged and has achieved recognition in a number of countries.

Canada
Upon assessment, The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators have found previous Glasgow Caledonian graduates to have an education that is ‘not substantially different’ from a Canadian physiotherapy education. These graduates were then permitted to attempt the Canadian Physiotherapy Competency Exam.

Australia
We are currently one of a small number of UK physiotherapy courses that the Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC) has deemed equivalent on individual application to a pre-registration physiotherapy course in Australia. Each individual application is assessed by the APC and potentially each programme cohort given equivalency on a "course year" basis.

This is the first MRes in Stroke Medicine in the UK which provides a comprehensive education and research training for the next generation of researchers and clinical providers of expert stroke care.

Degree information

Students on this programme will undertake modules in the clinical manifestations of stroke; treatment and service delivery; and epidemiology and prevention of stroke and statistical methods in health research. They also acquire substantial research skills and techniques whilst undertaking a project with leading researchers in the field.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core modules (60 credits), and a substantial research project (120 credits). There are no optional modules for this programme.

Dissertation/report
All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 15,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops/practical sessions, journal clubs, presentations, supervisory meetings, journal clubs, presentations and posters. Taught modules are assessed by short-answer multiple choice question examinations and timed essays. The research project requires a written dissertation, oral and a poster presentation at the Queen Square Symposium or conference.

Careers

The portfolio of taught graduate programmes at UCL Institute of Neurology offers research-embedded clinical teaching to enhance and expand the career progression and opportunities of our students. All of our graduates have reported that their degree enhanced their careers. Many of our Master's graduates have gone on to further PhD-level study, or successfully applied to medical school. Clinicians who took time out to obtain an MSc have returned to training and scientists have progressed to obtain research assistant posts.
