Course content

The Architecture MA provides a course that is wide-ranging and flexible, facilitating alternative modes of study and a range of options, including the choice of either a written or design-based thesis. The programme also allows for specialism through its three designated pathways: Architecture (Cultural Identity and Globalisation); Architecture (Digital Media) and Architecture (History and Theory), or alternatively, you can also create your own pathway, under the heading Architecture MA, by selecting and combining relevant modules that meet your individual requirements.

The range of optional and specialist modules offered allows you to develop your individual learning trajectories through the in-depth study of specific subject areas, involving theoretical components as well as practical applications. A series of theory rich modules will stimulate you to analyse current trends in architecture, design theory and practice on the basis of your research and critical judgement, and use these insights to produce high quality written work in a scholarly manner.

In parallel, a set of design-oriented activities encourages you to develop your artistic, aesthetic and intellectual vision through the use of different media, in order to produce individual proposals with a high level of spatial, material and formal resolution. This is a programme of study that involves networking, software development technologies and architectures for the design and management of modern distributed computer systems and networks. The emphasis is on a software engineering approach based on sound modern software engineering project management methods, tools and techniques, which enable an integrated lifecycle systems development view.

The programme aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to allow them to contribute to the planning, design and management of modern network based computer systems. Students will gain the understanding of critical evaluation of existing technology options, future developments, protocols, architecture and tools needed to support the development and delivery of advanced network services. Programmes for computer science or computer engineering graduates who wish to develop a specialism in computer systems and advanced software engineering or computer networks.

KSA incorporates the Centre for Research in European Architecture (CREAte), which focuses on research in architectural humanities and design, and Centre for Architecture and Sustainable Environment (CASE), which promotes research in the field of sustainable architecture.

- CREAte

The Centre provides a focus for research in architecture in the European context. Its emphasis is on the role and contribution of humanities to architecture and urban design in the context of urban and regional regeneration, nationally and internationally.

CREAte provides a platform for evening lectures by contemporary architects and scholars; hosting debates and events that are in the heart of architectural agenda of today.

The Centre builds upon its staff specialisms, interests and skills in the following areas: regional studies, contemporary architectural and urban theory and design, architectural history and theory (ranging from antiquity to contemporary European cities), sustainability, European topographies (landscape, urban, suburban and metropolitan) etc. Staff participate in the activities of AHRA – Architecture Humanities Research Association and are internationally published authors.

- CASE

The Centre promotes research in the field of sustainable environment regionally, nationally and internationally.

Its research focus encompasses different aspects and scales of the sustainable built environment from the individual building to the urban block, promoting the wider environmental agenda and keeping the School at the forefront of research and development in the field. CASE also pursues research into the historical and cultural dimension of environmental design to foster links between the sciences, arts and humanities. There is a strong interest in understanding the environmental behaviour of historic buildings and the strategies originally deployed to manage the internal environment.

The Centre has already secured funding from various sources. This includes three EPSRC projects on climate change weather data for a sustainable built environment, sustainability of airport terminal buildings and design interventions in the public realm for affecting human behaviour, and two TSB-funded projects on Building Performance Evaluation. CASE is also involved with the recent EPSRC large-scale network on Digital Economy Communities and Culture.

Network Design and Management: This unit aims to introduce you to the issues, processes and tools of top-down network design and provide you with awareness of the issues and techniques involved in the management of large scale computer networks.

Communications Security: This unit attempts to follow a systematic and rational engineering approach to help you master challenging topics such as cryptography.

Individual Project: The course ends with a four-month individual project in which you apply your knowledge to a significant communications system or network planning problem. Projects are tailored to your individual interests and may take place in our own laboratories or, by agreement, in industry.

The Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) graduate degree program offers an accredited three-year curriculum. This professional course of study is highly demanding with a large proportion of the curriculum being required coursework. Design studios are integrated with courses in landscape history and theory, site analysis and planning, and management of environments. Within this challenging program, opportunities to develop individual identity and special skills are made possible through the selection of specialized topic design studios, thoughtful engagement with electives, and especially through the execution of the Graduation Project.
The academics are coupled with experience in the contemporary profession with internships available for credits. By working in firms or agencies related to student's areas of interest, design development, and documentation skills are honed for future practice. The Internet has now become part of our day-to-day life and is growing rapidly even during recessions. An expanding mobile communications backbone (as evinced by the number of smartphones being projected to rise from 500 million in 2011 to 2 billion by 2015) has led to greatly increased mobile internet traffic.

To take advantage of this opportunity, companies will require staff who are skilled in network design, implementation, administration, management and analysis. Students on this programme will also be given an opportunity to study towards industrial qualifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Cisco Certified Network Professionals (CCNP).

Assessment

Student works are assessed through combination of coursework, lab-based practical exams and written examinations. The final mark for some modules may include one or more pieces of course work set and completed during the module. Project work is assessed by a written report and oral presentation. Part 2 requires the student to research and prepare an individual project/dissertation of a substantial nature.

University students who are unable to successfully complete all aspects of the Part 1 may be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploman (120 credits) or Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits).

Career Opportunities

The programme emphasises four key themes within Computer Networking: routing and switching, emerging network technologies, network design, and security. Programme description

The Master’s Programme in Architecture and Urban Design provides the skills and knowledge needed to practice professionally. The programme emphasizes a research-oriented approach in order to anticipate future challenges for architects and urban designers. Its profile is design led and practical, as well as academic and theoretical.

A majority of the coursework is project-based and it takes place in design studios led by experienced architects and researchers. These studios function as lab environments that target current specializations within the field. Studios are supplemented with course modules that focus on history and theory, design and technology, as well as leadership and professional practice.

The Department of Architecture at Chalmers houses an excellent infrastructure in the form of studio spaces, an architecture library, model workshops and digital fabrication, a robot lab and several research groups and centres. This can take a further six months for full-time and 12 months for part-time students.

The alternative route is if you already have an undergraduate qualification in Landscape Architecture. Our course is an opportunity to enrol for a fully accredited MALA or to top-up your qualification into an MA when you have completed a postgraduate diploma. You will have the opportunity to undertake a project of your choosing, and relevant to your interests, in order to achieve this.

Mohammad is responsible for the strategic leadership of the Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology,having joined our University in June 2011 from the University of East London. A well published researcher, with over 50 refereed conference and Journal publications, his research profile includes many funded research programmes including JISC and EU FP7 projects. Mohammad’s first degree was in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He then went on to complete a PhD in the 'Design, Development and Evaluation of Multimedia Based Learning Systems' at Kingston University. IAAC offers in Barcelona an international Master programs in Advanced Architecture (MAA01), oriented to architects, engineers and designers from all over the world eager to imagine the future of our cities and societies and committed to build it in the present.The Master in Advanced Architecture program emerges as an innovative open structure focusing on three select Research Lines (Intelligent Cities, Self-sufficient Buildings, Digital Matter-Intelligent Construction) all led by internationally renowned experts, and bringing together students and faculty from different disciplines and origins, towards the creation of a networked hub of excellence, the IAAC Community,  dedicated to research and innovation for the habitability of the 21st Century. The Master in Advanced Architecture is accredited by the Universidad Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) with respectively 75 ECTS and 130 ECTS. The MAA is directed by the architect and researcher Areti Markopoulou.

Course Structure

The Master in Advanced Architecture is articulated in three different programs: MAA01, MAA01+OTF and MAA02. During the first year (October 2017 – June 2018) the students enrolled in the programs will work together in a common educational platform, with a common organization and academic structure. After the completion of MAA01, students enrolled in MAA01+OTF or MAA02 will follow two different organizations and academic structures. MAA02 combines the first year Master with a second year of investigation to develop a thesis project. During this second year students are required to deal with a project counting on the possibility to develop it with international faculty and enterprises, highly specialized in different fields. MAA+OTF combines MAA01 with a postgraduate program called Open Thesis Fabrication (OTF), which is an intensive applied research program that combines Academy and Industry. Nowadays its focus is on pylos projects and self sufficiency. There is also the possibility to extend the master in two years, during this second year the aim is to focus on your own thesis project. The Master of Architecture (Global Practice) recognises the global and interdisciplinary nature of design practice in the built environment. It is designed for professionals with ambitions to lead in global design practice. In teaching, learning and assessment, the emphasis is on interdisciplinary teamwork and project-based design in the built environment.

There is scope for students to design the Masters Design Project to suit their aspirations in academic research or design practice in the built environment. The programme involves global design practices in collaboration with participants, and aims to produce employable leaders in Architecture and allied disciplines in a global context.

The programme is aimed at architects and allied built environment professionals who are ambitious to take a leading role in architectural practice. They might want to grow their own practice or move into one of the big global practices.

The programme is focused on:
-Communicating effectively in interdisciplinary global working environments
-Building a global network
-Managing big, complex practices and projects
-Designing sustainable buildings in a range of contexts from community self-builds to international airports.

The main aim of the programme is to give students opportunities to undertake design projects, collaborating with a cohort of students from around the world and the UK in an intensive, one year, full-time format.

The Master of Architecture (Global Practice) is designed to prepare graduates to enter these new, collaborative work environments by providing the opportunity to develop new cross-cultural skills, attitudes and competencies and providing learning that is transferable in multiple contexts.

The programme aims to expand and transform students’ perspectives, helping them research and apply sustainable design and construction methods and techniques for managing diverse projects and teams in the context of global architectural and engineering practice. The programme is designed to provide a flexible and responsive learning environment that aims to prepare and equip graduates for growing environmental and social challenges, respects the diversity of the students’ own values and beliefs and looks to foster an outlook that is interdisciplinary, intercultural, innovative and inclusive.

How You Study

The Master of Architecture (Global Practice) course is divided into three levels - the Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and the Master's Thesis. Each level is worth 60 CATS points of study and generally corresponds to a semester of full-time study.

The teaching and learning strategy is designed to offer a balanced programme of study with opportunities for theoretical investigation, project development and independent research fully integrated throughout the programme.

The approach to teaching and learning is based on evaluating the skills, knowledge and interests that students bring with them to the course and constructing a variety of learning experiences that respond to each student’s individual needs and requirements. Above all, the teaching team acknowledges and values the diverse backgrounds and experiences of students who come from all over the world. We aim to build on this diversity whilst encouraging students to expand their horizons and to develop advanced skills and knowledge in architecture.

Students are encouraged to adapt the programme of learning in the design studio to reflect their own interests, exploring design problems in projects that are negotiated with programme tutors.

How You Are Assessed

Students are assessed in a variety of ways; through verbal presentations, written submissions and through the exhibition of design project work and the development of a portfolio of individual and collaborative design project work.

All are connected in a network. From the underlying skeleton of social relations, the interdependent evolution of our financial system, to the emergent collective computation in the brain, most of the complex systems that appear in society, technology, and nature are ultimately characterised by a nontrivial pattern of inter-relations. This underlying architecture is in turn shaping how information diffuses and spreads, how resilient the system is against attacks or perturbations, or how complex patterns emerge at the systemic level from the aggregation of seemingly simple individuals.

Our MSc in Network Science will provide a thorough grounding in the core principles of modelling and analysis of complex and networked systems, along with the principal analytical and numerical methodologies. This will open to students a host of career opportunities in systems and networks modelling industries, spanning the IT, financial, and biomedical sectors, that are now requiring such specialist knowledge and skills.

Network Science is a very active and rapidly evolving research field with high societal impact, which stands at the crossroads of graph theory, complexity and data analysis. Its impact and applications outside academia pervades technological sectors such as communications and infrastructures (Internet, transportation networks, energy networks, urban mobility), biostatistics and network biology (brain modelling, protein interaction networks, postgenomic era), public health (epidemic spreading models), marketing and IT (social media, data analytics) to cite a few. This specialist masters programme aims at providing graduate students and professionals with a rigorous training in the underlying mathematical concepts, the analysis and modelling of complex networks and networked systems, complemented with training in computing, numerical simulations and massive data analysis. It is aimed towards students whose undergraduate degree is in mathematics or a cognate discipline who wish to enter a career involving analysis and optimisation of diverse kinds of networks, networked dynamics and models.

This is a pioneering MSc in the UK, a joint programme, taught by our Schools of Mathematical Sciences, and Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, drawing on their strengths in research and teaching in the area of complex networks, mathematical modelling of complex systems, and data mining.

We teach what we know and what we do best. Within the School of Mathematics, the Complex Systems & Networks group is one of the biggest hubs in Network Science within the UK, where we address both fundamental and applied challenges in the mathematical modelling of complex systems with clear societal impact, in collaboration with several industrial stakeholders. Within the School of Electronic Engineering, the Networks group was founded in 1987, and has hugely expanded ever since, bringing their expertise in online social networks, data mining and cloud computing.
