The Law School is ranked 10th in the UK (The Complete University Guide 2018) and law has been taught at University of Aberdeen since the inauguration of Kings College in 1495.

This programme is highly relevant to current and future events resulting from breakdown of regional agreements with the UK and EU for example and re-negotiation of international trade agreements globally in a volatile global environment for trade internationally. The programme is highly relevant to you if you want to work in top level government and influence policy to assist your respective country to trade successfully around the world. This is a complex but fascinating area with some contemporary history to it in terms of the different agreements available and how these are now managed. There is also a need for skilled law professionals to work in multinational business where international trade needs to continue in order for companies to grow successfully within their supply chain and countries they trade in.

You will learn about the sale of goods to and from different countries in terms of legal agreements, World Trade Organisation rules and regulations and international trade negotiation plus management of international sales and terms. You can also study arbitration to assist in smooth running of your respective company or negotiations. This is an exciting area of international law in which there will be plenty of challenges to apply your skills and training to.

WHAT ARE THE KEY STRENGTHS OF THIS PROGRAM?

The MBA offers a 500 hour general management program in a triple-accredited International Business School.
The Grenoble Graduate School of Business MBA is highly applied in content, delivered by a team that brings together academic specialists together with managers and consultants from a wide range of sectors.

PROGRAM DELIVERY: FULL-TIME STRUCTURE

The course modules are taught over one academic year from September to the end of June.
The class sessions take place on a regular basis from Monday to Friday. Upon successful completion of these modules, participants will begin their Final Management Project. Students normally work part- or full-time during this phase. The choice of location for the project is entirely the student's own.

Foreign Language classes: the Full-Time delivery includes optional foreign language, especially French.

PHASE 1 CORE COURSES

The program is a balanced and challenging one, equipping participants with numerical and analytical skills, communication and interpersonal skills, plus insights into current managerial issues in geopolitics, macroeconomics and governance. Through regular group work on cases and individual assignments on management dilemmas, students will develop their expertise in budgetary and financial management as well as in people management. Strategic analysis and Negotiations skills are developed through face-to-face team negotiations to resolve authentic and complex cases.

Personal Development Week in Grenoble Each Year -

Students from each campus are invited to attend this week together, enabling students from 4 centers to network and to attend seminars and conferences together on key management questions. Topics covered typically include Conflict Resolution, Interview Techniques, Radical Career Change, Salary Negotiations, and Effective Leadership.

Global Management Challenge -

The Global Management Challenge simulation is one of the highlights of the core courses. Small teams of MBA students will compete in a complex management simulation against leading business and engineering schools, firstly in France followed by international play-offs in the final rounds. The decision-making is intense and the experience is a roller-coaster ride of changing share price, volatile business environments, and exchanges - often heated! - with fellow team members.

In 2016 all full-time Grenoble students will visit Barcelona, Spain for the International Human Resources module.

PHASE 2 SPECIALIZATIONS

From a menu of up to 8 alternative choices, students can personalize their MBA program for 20% of their total class sessions. The content is focused on professional management activity, such as Management Consulting, or management in a range of functional areas. For many participants, the specialization choice will also determine the focus of the Final Management Project: for example, choosing a Finance elective can lead directly to a project in the area of Finance.

PHASE 3 FINAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

During this phase, program participants are free to locate to anywhere in the world and to complete their projects while pursuing professional activity. The Project is an opportunity that different students use in different ways. A Full-Time student may use the project to demonstrate value and capabilities to a potential employer. For some students, ideas for entrepreneurial ventures can be assessed before the start-up is launched.

CNCP RECOGNITION

Students graduating from the MBA also receive a certificate conferring them the title of Manager International. This title, recognized by the Commission Nationale de la Certification Professionnelle - an agency belonging to the French Ministry of Labor - attests to the successful acquisition of a core of international management skills and knowledge necessary for future roles as managers in an international context. The Manager International label is registered on the Répertoire National des Certifications Professionnelles at Level 1, the highest level for such certification.

The Master of Science in International Business Negotiation offers two semesters of courses that concentrate on both theory and practice.

The Master of Science in International Business Negotiation includes interactive courses such as Culture and Negotiation Strategy, Power and Leadership, and Introduction to Conflict Management among others.

Students will learn put theory into practice through courses such as Project Management and Negotiation Strategy and Company Observation.

The Master of Science in International Business Negotiation Curriculum:

The program consists of 2 consecutive semesters of courses (September – May) followed by a professional experience (from June onwards). The curriculum is developed around core courses and specialization courses in Business, Human Resources, Conflict Prevention and Resolution. It also includes French or foreign language classes.

French language classes:

French language lessons are mandatory for non-Francophone international students. Francophone students may choose German, Italian, Chinese, or Spanish.

Admission & Fees

The Master of Science in International Business Negotiation is both for students and professionals who show strong potential and have a bachelor’s degree in any field.

Admission requirements:

The program is open to candidates with a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university with good academic performance and a good command of English.

Native English speakers or students who have had two years of courses taught in English are exempt. A GMAT score is optional, not mandatory.

No prior knowledge of French is needed; however French language classes are mandatory for non-French speakers as part of the program.

COM 500 Introduction to Graduate Studies. One hour.
The primary goal is to orient new graduate students to the expectations and procedures of graduate study in the department. Topics covered include developing the plan of study, thesis prospectus, comprehensive examination, and choosing advisors and committees.

COM 501 Introduction to Teaching Public Speaking. No hours.
The primary goal of this course is to facilitate the instruction of COM 123 Public Speaking. Students enrolled in this course will provide lesson plans for their classes and discuss options for improving classroom learning.

COM 513 Communication and Diversity. Three hours.
Study and analysis of issues of diversity as they relate to groups in society and in communication fields. Emphasis is on the media's treatment of various groups in society. Approved as a communication and cultural diversity elective.

COM 515 African American Rhetoric. Three hours.
A historical-critical investigation of African American public discourse from the Revolutionary era to the present, exploring rhetorical strategies for social change and building community.

COM 521 Political Communication. Three hours.
An exploration of rhetorical, media, and cross-disciplinary theories and literature related to political communication as expressed in campaigns and institutional governance.

COM 525 Gender and Political Communication. Three hours.
Study of the impact of gender on political communication activities. Topics include gender differences in political messages and voter orientation, masculine ideals of leadership, women’s roles and advancement in the political sphere, and media representations.

A systematic inquiry into the development of Greek and Roman rhetorical theory during the classical period (ca. 480 B.C.E.–400 C.E.).

COM 548 Seminar in Rhetorical Criticism. Three hours.
An examination of various methodological perspectives of rhetorical criticism. Specifically, the course aims to familiarize students with both traditional and alternative critical methods and to encourage students to perceive the rhetorical dimensions of all manner of public discourse, ranging from speeches, advertising, film, popular music to discursive forms in new media and the Internet.

COM 560 Group Leadership. Three hours.
An advanced study of small-group behavior, examining in detail theories of leadership as they relate to problem solving in group situations.

COM 550 Qualitative Research Methods. Three hours.
An introduction to qualitative research methods in communication, including data collection and analysis. The goals of the course are to provide exposure to a broad array of qualitative methods, help students learn to use some of these methods, and to help them to understand the role of research in our field. The course is designed to help student actually conduct research, resulting in two conference-worthy papers.

COM 555 Conflict and Negotiation. Three hours.
Negotiation is fundamentally a communicative activity. The main objective of this course is to understand processes of formal conflict management in mixed motive settings. Students will apply negotiation theory and skills to simulated negotiation cases that include buyer-seller transactions, negotiating through an agent or mediator, salary negotiations, deal making, resolution of workplace disputes, multiparty negotiations, international and intercultural negotiations, and ethical decision making and communication in negotiation. The skills and theory introduced in this course will help students manage integrative and distributive aspects of the negotiation process to achieve individual and collective goals.

COM 561 Human Communication Theory. Three hours.
A detailed review of selected theories of speech communication with a focus on the critical examination of the foundation of social scientific theories.

COM 562 Theories of Persuasion. Three hours.
A critical review of social-influence theories in the area of persuasion and human action.

COM 563 Relational Communication. Three hours.
Prerequisite: COM 220 or permission of the instructor.
Focused investigation of to communication in close personal relationships, with primary emphasis on contemporary concepts and theories of romantic relationships and friendships.

COM 565 Intercultural Communication. Three hours.
Survey and analysis of major concepts, theories, and research dealing with communication between people of different cultural backgrounds in multicultural and international settings.

COM 567 Seminar: Public Address. Three hours.
A topical consideration of individual case studies from public discourse, designed to probe problems of the nature of the audience, the ethics of persuasion, and the power of public advocacy in mass society. Topics may vary.

Explores the role of communication in the construction of gender. Covers feminist theoretical approaches in communication and other disciplines, the intersections of gender with other marginalities, and the role of gender in various communication contexts. An introductory examination of historical and contemporary issues in organizational communication scholarship from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives.

Examines the theoretical issues inherent in the study of organizational communication, the primary factors requiring assessment and intervention, the impact of on-going changes and new information techniques, current challenges facing the organizational consultant, and the practical application of communication processes for improving organizations.

COM 575 Technology, Culture, and Human Communication. Three hours.
Study of the complexity of technologically-mediated communication across cultures. This course combines literature and concepts from intercultural communication with human communication and technology and addresses the challenges of interacting with others via technology, working in global virtual teams and organizations, and participating as a citizen and consumer in the technology age.

The International Summer School at the Rouen Business School is an intensive 2 or 4-week program open to undergraduates and Master’s level students of all disciplines who wish to experience France and French culture, develop cross-cultural skills and in depth understanding of Business Ethics and International Negotiation skills while at the same time earning up to 10 ECTs credits.
The program is divided into 2 sessions of 2 weeks which can be taken separately or together. Business Ethics in a Changing World
In a time of financial crisis and corporate abuse, this course explores the complex and often confusing ethical landscape of modern business. It looks at the very real ethical and moral dilemmas faced by business people in a globalized and rapidly changing world. It examines why ethics are important in business, what level of social responsibility we can expect from business leaders, what fosters an ethical culture in businesses and organizations, what contemporary forces in international business are corrupting the fragile and delicatet issue of ethical principle, value-based action, and moral constraint in the global economy as well as examining the complications caused by rapid technological innovation.

SESSION 2: 2 weeks
Global Leadership & International Negotiation – Embracing diversity in the workplace and doing business across borders
Effective global management requires excellent cross-cultural
management skills as well as a good grounding in negotiation fundamentals. Therefore, the first part of the course aims to provide students with practical tools which will enable them to effectively analyze and respond to cross-cultural conflicts that they will encounter in their professional lives by looking at the effect of culture on global business plans, human resource managerial strategies, and social & business gatherings. In the second part of the class, students go beyond theories, and through a series of practical case studies, will have the opportunity to improve their interpersonal skills in intercultural negotiation situations including preparing for negotiations, effective negotiation strategy, responding to arguments and overcoming cognitive, emotional, cultural and institutional obstacles as well as touching briefly on multi-party and agent negotiations and overcoming conflict through mediation.

Course structure

An innovative alternative to a MBA, this one-year, full-time course is designed for graduates of any subject with or without work experience. Case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice.

Teaching takes place over three terms, from late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.

Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are some special intensive workshops on topics such as leadership, management and research, and a one-week tutor-led international study visit to companies in another European country.

Your final project will take place over the summer after teaching finishes. Your optional work-experience based final project may continue for up to one-year past the end of teaching.

Accreditations

Accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), this course progresses you towards Chartered Manager status – the highest level that can be achieved in the management profession.

You will also be eligible for membership of the Institute of Directors, the longest running organisation for professional leaders in the UK. Membership provides you with access to the resources and the opportunity to network with leaders and executives.

Course structure

An innovative alternative to an MBA, this one-year, full-time course is designed for graduates of any subject with or without work experience. Case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice.

Teaching takes place over three terms, form late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.

Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are some special intensive workshops on topics such as leadership, management and research, and a one-week tutor-led international study visit to companies in another European country.

Your final project will take place over the summer after teaching finishes. Your optional work-experience based final project may continue for up to one-year past the end of teaching.

The MA programme has been developed to allow you to combine theoretical research with critical spatial practice. Lectures, seminars and workshops will equip you with a rigorous grounding in critical spatial theory.

The theoretical module provides a thorough coverage of the historical, philosophical and technological aspects of the intersection of space, power and conflict.

This programme is orientated towards graduates who want to undertake training in research architecture before proceeding to PhD study, or to pursue or enhance a career in spatial practices.

MA Research Architecture begins with a specific core module called ‘Introduction to Research Architecture’ as well as the MA Core Module B, which is shared by students from the whole Visual Cultures MA cohort.

The four assessed components of the MA comprise:

The research project (Studio), actively engages with spatial practice and theory, and concentrates on in-depth analysis of a distinct issue, process or site. This project forms the core of the MA Dissertation, which you submit at the end of the programme.

A series of seminars, workshops and lectures will provide you with the necessary and stimulating information and create a forum for discussion on contemporary approaches and theories in architectural and spatial research.

Independent Research

The research project (Studio), actively engages with spatial practice and theory, and concentrates on in-depth analysis of a distinct issue, process or site. This project forms the core of the MA Dissertation, which you submit at the end of the programme.

Two-day MA Symposium

(Oral Presentation on Dissertation Topic) (30 credits)
The MA Symposium provides you with the opportunity, fairly early on in the research/writing process, to present a worked up and focused investigation of your dissertation topic or some aspect of it. Your presentation will be formally assessed. Presenting on your dissertation research at this stage is invaluable for enabling you to define your project and, through verbal feedback and discussion, to progress your thinking. Assessment: one oral presentation in early June (20 minutes, plus 10 minute discussion).

Site visit

Every year the MA classes will travel to a place of contemporary interest, generally environments undergoing rapid, intense change where political transformation can be viewed in the development of the built environment.

Its historical range is wide and students should be ready to research and trouble-shoot plays from different eras, whether classical Greek and Roman, medieval, early modern or contemporary.

Traditional formats of discussion groups and seminars are coupled with workshops and problem-solving sessions which address all the negotiations involved in transferring words on the page into a fully realised performance. The main emphasis of the MA is on the interpretation of text through the consideration of acting and directing processes, production conditions, historical context, and institutional and cultural politics. Teaching and assessment

Seminars and workshops
In terms 1 and 2 Directing Early Modern Plays and Case Studies in Writing, Directing and Performance are examined by 2,500 word essays. In Term 1 Writing into Performance is examined by a scriptwriting assignment. In term 2 Directing Modern Plays is examined by a combination of seminar performance and a 3,000 word essay. Storytelling for Theatre, Film and Television is examined by a 3,000 word project in each term. An ambitious programme of masterclasses given by leading practitioners is an important part of the MA.

Screenings
During terms 1 and 2 there will be screenings of relevant film and television material relating to specific performances, plays and productions under discussion.

Dissertation or practical project
In term 3 students prepare for their dissertation or practical project work. Students are assigned dissertation/project supervisors and receive individual supervision through the period of research. Assessment is by 20,000 word dissertation or by a substantial practical project such as a production, performance or piece of creative writing, supported by a 4,000 word essay mapping the project's planning and evolution. All final projects are subject to the approval of the convenors of the MA.

Careers

Because of the innovative emphasis on acquiring a wide range of analytical and practical skills centred around the performance and production of theatre texts, students are highly employable.

An in-depth understanding of narrative structures and their visual, technical, performative and political dimensions is of paramount importance to the entertainment industry and a significant number at the top of these businesses support this programme because it plugs an increasingly serious gap in the skills market. Recent students from the BA and MA Writing and Performance (a forerunner of this MA) have benefited from placements with theatre, film and television companies, and the MA in Theatre: Writing, Directing and Performance builds on that ethos. Placements have been informally arranged subject to student interest and industry availability from year to year.

Past graduates have gone on to study PhDs and also to conservatoires to continue their practical training. Many are now working as screenwriters, playwrights, actors, directors, designers, producers, technicians, literary managers, dramaturges, and literary agents. A significant number of graduates have set up their own theatre companies. Others work in theatre-in-education initiatives, arts funding organisations, youth theatre, journalism, publishing, and dramatherapy. Past students are also employed by major animation companies, and have gained work as script editors and production assistants.

For example, it is part of the civil justice system of England and Wales through the Civil Procedure Rules and the provisions in the rules which encourage the use of mediation. Additional government initiatives in England and Wales have been introduced such as automatic referral to mediators for small claims court matters.

In Europe, the EU Directive on Cross-Border Mediation has led to the implementation of mediation legislation throughout the EU. Beyond Europe, other developments continue: for example, Japan has introduced mediation in its financial services sector; Hong Kong is promoting mediation through new legislation protecting confidentiality of the process; the International Bar Association has drafted investor-state mediation rules; Nigeria continues to develop its multi-door courthouses through which mediation is a primary process.

The Postgraduate Distance Learning Diploma in International Dispute Resolution - Mediation has a strong focus on mediation and conciliation. The diploma is aimed not only at lawyers, but also at other professionals who may be involved in mediation - be it as a disputant, representative or perhaps as a mediator: a legal qualification will not be a prerequisite for admission, although you will be expected to appreciate that the course will involve an understanding of law and legal implications. References and materials will be legally orientated, but this will enable the non-lawyer to be better equipped to deal with the issues raised in international business mediation.

Why is the course relevant?

Mediation is developing at great speed in many countries. For example, it is part of the civil justice system of England and Wales through the Civil Procedure Rules and the provisions in the rules which encourage the use of mediation. Additional government initiatives in England and Wales have been introduced such as:

A pilot scheme for the automatic referral to mediation in the UK County Court Money Claims Centre for claims of less than £5,000.
Automatic referral to mediators for small claims court matters (claims up to £5,000).
A Court of Appeal scheme whereby appeals of personal injury and contract claims of up to £200,000 will be automatically recommended for mediation.
The Department for Business, Innovations and Skills has instituted a pilot scheme for two regional mediation networks for small and medium sized enterprises.
In Europe, the EU Directive on Cross-Border Mediation (2008/52/EC) has led to the implementation of mediation legislation throughout the EU. Beyond Europe, other developments continue: for example, Japan has introduced mediation in its financial services sector; Hong Kong is promoting mediation through new legislation protecting confidentiality of the process; the International Bar Association has drafted investor-state mediation rules; Nigeria continues to develop its multi-door courthouses through which mediation is a primary process.

Programme structure

You can study the Postgraduate Distance Learning Diploma in International Dispute Resolution - Mediation, part-time for a period of 18 months, starting in January each year.

The year is divided into two seven-month terms, with a selection of optional modules and dissertation being offered during the second term.
◦Taught modules (22.5 or 45 credits). Each module requires around seven and a half hours of work a week over one term. Each module assessment will vary and consist of assessed tasks, a module essay and final assessment exercise (take-home exam).
◦Dissertation (15,000-words) (45 credits) – on a topic of your own choice

Graduates from the School’s MSc suite of programmes have proved to be extremely attractive to employers and have entered a wide range of careers including marketing, supply chain management, operations management, accounting and general management. Such multinational employers include BAE Submarine Systems, Bombardier Aerospace, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Rolls Royce. Other students have gone on to pursue research towards an MPhil or PhD.

Although the MSc International Business is a new offering, we expect our graduates will be competitive in these range of graduate roles. The programme is specifically designed to equip graduates for work in multinational companies or managing in an international context.

Module Information

Fundamentals of International Business Strategy

This module aims to provide a theoretical and practical understanding of the core international business strategy topics and establish the foundation for students to draw on in later modules, such as Business in the World Economy (Semester 2). Topics may include issues related to the international environment (globalisation, theories of international trade and investment, the political environment, and international monetary and financial environment), international business strategy (opportunity assessment and product strategy) and foreign market entry (opportunity assessment and international marketing).

Human Resource Management and Work in the Global Context

The module is designed to give students an advanced appreciation of the changing nature of work, as well as key aspects of international human resource management. This module will focus on three key themes, namely: the nature of changes being placed on work systems due to increased global competition (e.g. cultural difference, employment effects of foreign direct investment); issues of managing across borders and cross-culturally within the modern business organisation (e.g. issues of expatriation); and finally, an understanding of key issues involved in the comparative study of work and work systems (e.g. comparative employment relations).

The Multinational Enterprise

The module aims to familiarise students with the organisational form unique to international business (The Multinational Enterprise), and explore some the advantages enjoyed, and challenges faced, by these firms. The Multinational Enterprise module complements the broader context covered in Fundamentals of International Business Strategy. Topics covered may include the history of MNEs, MNEs as an organisational form, strategic alliances formation, and foreign direct investment.

International Management in Practice

The aim of this module is to increase student understanding of negotiation and problem-solving techniques in the context of international management. Often multinational organisations are portrayed as large, impersonal organisations with the freedom to roam the world. This depiction rarely, if ever, reflects reality. Actions of multinationals are frequently the product of bargains and deals concluded internally or externally with other firms and public agencies. The nature and quality of these bargains have a big influence on how multinationals operate and how they perform. Topics covered may include principles of negotiations, negotiating subsidiary mandate change, negotiating financial packages for inward investment and problem-solving in international supply chains.

Business in the World Economy

This module, in keeping with the tradition of regional and country studies in International Business, seeks to highlight the variety of environments and the diverse influences on the conduct of international business. As such the module will highlight the contingent and interdependent nature of the international environment for firms today. Dividing the global economy into major regions and selecting key national economies, the module analysis each from an institutional perspective at the supra-national, regional and national level, as a potential market and host location, as a sources of international business activity, from a civil society perspective and in terms of the business-government relationship. Typical regions examined include China, Americas, Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

Global Supply Chains and Logistics

The aim of the module is to provide students with an understanding of the structure, operation and challenges inherent in managing global supply chains. Today’s organisations must manage a globally-diffuse supply base and manage the flow of materials and product between suppliers, factories and operating sites. This module provides students with the ability to understand the challenges of operating global supply chains, including developing sourcing strategy, buying from low-cost countries, logistics management, and selection of appropriate transportation and storage modes.

Management Control in International Business

The aim of this module is to equip students to understand and evaluate managerial control systems used in international or multi-divisional organisations and the extent to which those systems effectively enforce control and influence behaviour. The module explores the traditional and contemporary techniques and practices used by managers in controlling the operations of international or multi-divisional businesses. The applicability of techniques and practices to given situations and the impact on participants’ behaviour is explored in the context of improving organisational effectiveness.

Research Methods

This course aims to introduce students to the philosophical and ethical underpinnings of business and management research, as well as to a range of quantitative and qualitative techniques used therein.
