The Master’s in Conflict Resolution and Governance offers you education on the broad spectrum of conflict resolution theory, research and practice. The causes, characteristics, significance and consequences of conflicts are studied in relation to the dynamics of public governance. You will learn how to analyse conflicts, negotiate their resolution and link conflict research with its practice.

The Conflict Resolution and Governance programme provides you with a foundation in theory and research that helps you analyse conflicts and conflict resolution efforts in relationship to the dynamics of public governance.

You are given the opportunity to develop a command of diverse resources needed to respond to analytical challenges presented by local, regional, and global conflicts and to situate contemporary events in a historical and comparative perspective.

The case-oriented approach of the programme helps you to develop skills and experience through the analysis of action in settings that are grounded in comparative and historical perspectives. 

Student profile

The programme is rigorous and intensive. You are expected to develop your capacity to work independently and in groups. Students come to the programme from a wide range of disciplinary and cultural backgrounds. This diverse group is linked by a shared interest in developing their theoretical and research competence in close relationship with practices located at the boundary between conflict resolution and governance.

Competencies

You will develop the capacity to employ theoretical orientations to make sense of the range of influences (from global to local and instrumental to identity-based and institutional) that shape conflicts and their relationship to governance. Your capacity to draw on the most vexing features of contemporary conflicts to shape governance regimes from the fabric of crisis will be increased. You will gain skills in conflict analysis, in negotiation and conflict resolution, and in linking research with practice. 

Focus on research

All lecturers in the Master’s programme in Conflict Resolution and Governance are prominent researchers at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR). This connection with the AISSR provides students with access to various academic opportunities. The Master’s thesis is based on a topic that students develop individually within a common research project. Research and writing are conducted in a tutorial setting with a member of the programme faculty.

Professor Dorussen is Associate Editor for the Journal of Peace Research, and specialises in the relationship between trade and conflict, the use of economic policies in international politics, the governance of post-conflict societies, and policy convergence in the European Union. He has recently completed fieldwork examining the impact of the UN mission on the perception of security in Timor Leste.

Professor Gizelis specialises in conflict dynamics, peacekeeping, gender equality and post-conflict reconstruction, and communicable diseases. In addition, Professor Gizelis is acting as Core Investigator on a new research project, ‘Armed Conflict and Maternal Health in Sub-Saharan Africa’ (2014-16), with the innovative aim of going beyond consideration of the direct effect of interventions to also consider relevant political, socioeconomic and cultural factors.

Professor Gleditsch’s research focuses on conflict and cooperation, democratisation, and spatial dimensions of social and political processes. He is the director of a large EU-funded research project on non-violent actions. He is also the director of the Michael Nicholson Centre of Conflict and Cooperation.

The M.S. in Conflict Analysis & Resolution is designed to train reflective professionals in the practice, design, and evaluation of a variety of conflict resolution applications. The M.S. program focuses on pragmatic approaches to solving problems inherent in human social relations. Students are exposed to a wide array of techniques and strategies to help people achieve nonviolent, non-litigious solutions for conflicts that arise in many personal, professional, organizational, and social environments. The M.S. program consists of a 12-course (36 credits) sequence that includes conflict resolution theory, practice skills, field placement, research design, and program evaluation.

Transferring Credits

Graduates of our Master's program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution who decide to continue their studies and are accepted into our Ph.D. program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, can transfer up to 15 credit hours to the Ph.D. program, thereby reducing the total number of credits for the doctoral program.

Program Formats

The M.S. program is offered in both residential and distance learning formats. These flexible formats allow mid-career working adults and those unable to attend the on-campus program, to study conflict resolution in a creative, rigorous, and structured fashion.

Students may enroll full or part time, taking six to nine credit hours per trimester. Students who attend full-time can expect to complete the program in 15 months. Part-time students will complete the program in 2 years. Summer attendance is mandatory.

Students taking online classes are required to attend 2 Residential Institutes (RI) per academic year. Each RI is 5 days. Currently the RIs are held in February and October. Please visit the Residential Institute for current information.

Master's students are provided NSU computer accounts including email and Blackboard, but must obtain their own Internet service providers, use their own computer systems and have a usable web camera. Online students use the web to access course materials, announcements, email, distance library services, subscription library databases, and other information, and for interaction with faculty and fellow students. Online, interactive learning methods are based on the use of Blackboard as a course management system. Online activities facilitate frequent student-to-faculty and student-to-student interaction. They are supported by threaded discussion boards, white boards, chat rooms, email, and multimedia presentations. In addition, Blackboard enables students to submit assignments online in multimedia formats and to receive their professors' reviews of assignments online in the same formats.

Curriculum

Masters students must complete a minimum of 36-credits; successfully pass a field practicum and a Comprehensive Examination or an optional thesis to be eligible for the degree. Students must also maintain a 3.0 GPA through completion of the degree. Some courses have specific prerequisite requirements that students must meet; these should be checked to ensure compliance. If a student chooses to they may opt to do the master's thesis.

Masters Theses Option

The student may write a research thesis. The thesis is 6 credits and counts as two electives. Instead of the electives offered in the fall and winter trimesters of the second year, thesis students register for Master's Thesis. Entrance into the thesis track is not automatic; students must meet eligibility requirements. Practicum

Practicum is a student centered learning experience that is supervised by professionals at a variety of local, regional, national, and international organizations, as well as monitored by the practicum coordinator and guided by faculty teaching the practicum sequence. Practicum I and II are offered both residentially and online, during the fall, winter and summer terms. Doctoral students do have the option of doing Teaching and Training which is offered in the fall, followed by a Teaching and Training practicum in the winter term. Students may follow either of these tracks.

Practicum provides opportunities that you must be active in creating. It provides the chance to explore employment settings and obtain a realistic feel for your level of expertise in conflict analysis and resolution. Practicum also offers you a preview of locations where conflict resolution is currently being used or where it can be introduced. Practicum essentially allows you to explore the field in an individually focused, yet supervised manner. Take advantage of this opportunity to explore and to appreciate the new contacts you make. Course Structure

The MSc will provide students with advanced knowledge of the complex and specialised areas of peacebuilding, among it conflict analysis, conflict prevention, conflict resolution and conflict transformation, community driven reconstruction, peace processes within the context of contemporary conflicts and in the context of broader international (humanitarian) interventions. Integrated into the MSc structure are opportunities to develop operational and vocational skills for example in negotiations, conflict mediation, conflict sensitive programme design and programme management, or urban peacebuilding. Students are provided with theoretical and empirical knowledge and with practical skills that are helpful for current and future employment opportunities. The courses are thus attractive to both graduates and mid-career practitioners. Whilst the academic and applied focus of the MSc comes through a peace and conflict studies analytic lens, course material will also draw from traditional strategic/security and development studies, enabling cross fertilisation between different perspectives. It allows the exploration of unique and new paradigms and practices in the fields of conflict, peace, security, defence, diplomacy, development and humanitarian intervention.

Course Learning and Teaching

At the beginning of the academic year, as well as the general induction programme offered by the School and the university, Durham Global Security Institute (DGSi) students are invited to a programme specific induction. This induction provides an overview of the programme an opportunity to meet members of the team and an opportunity to discuss optional module choices.

 The 180 credits one-year MSc degree programme is divided into five core and three optional modules of 15 credits each. Students also have to submit a dissertation (60 credits) of not more than15,000 words. Practitioners have the option of writing an in-depth policy document as their dissertation.

Most of the modules are delivered during the first two terms and students spend the remaining time to write the dissertation. Assessment methods include: an examination, essays, presentations, reflective journal, reports, article reviews and policy briefs. 

Although all modules have 18/19 contact hours, the core modules are spread over 9/10 weeks and 132 hours of self-directed learning. The modules are mainly delivered through weekly 2-hour sessions which take the form of a one hour lecture and a one hour tutorial. The form in which seminars are conducted can differ from one module to another. Typically modules would have elements of lectures, discussions, and presentations from students—the extent of each of these components would differ from one module to another. The optional modules of the programme are either delivered over two full days, through a mixture of lectures, Q&A sessions, seminar discussions, and role plays or over a single term in 2-hour seminar sessions. There is also the opportunity to participate in a study visit which provides an opportunity to investigate issues ‘in the field’ concerned with conflict prevention, conflict resolution, state and peace-building. Of particular interest is the theory-practice linkage

Students can also meet their module coordinators or programme coordinator during their weekly contact hours or by making an appointment. When students are working on their dissertations during the latter half of the year, they are required to attend two 4-hour workshops. In addition, they have the opportunity to meet their assigned supervisors for an average of 6 meetings. Students also have access to the MSc Programme Director and the School’s Director of Taught Post Graduate Studies whenever there is a need.

The School hosts events throughout the year which all postgraduate students are invited to attend. Students are also fully integrated into the Durham Global Security Institute which also hosts guest lectures and seminars throughout the year. These events provide students with the opportunity to engage with, and debate, the most important issues in current political and international studies, and in conflict, peace and security studies.

About the Brussels School of International Studies

The Brussels School of International Studies is a multidisciplinary postgraduate School of the University of Kent. We bring together the disciplines of politics, international relations, law and economics to provide in-depth analysis of international problems such as conflict, security, development, migration, the political economy and the legal basis of a changing world order.

Course structure

Specialisations

The MA in International Conflict and Security allows students to choose secondary areas of specialisation from the range of programmes offered at BSIS. Thus, a focused programme of study can be constructed by studying International Conflict and Security in the context of International Relations; Development; International Migration and and other subject areas we cover.

This leads to the award of an MA degree in, for example, 'International Conflict and Security with International Migration'.

Standard and extended versions

The LLM is offered in both a standard version (90 ECTS credits) and an extended version (120 ECTS credits) and in each case students may take the programme with or without a secondary specialisation. Those on the extended version will take more modules to gain extra credit.

- provide a programme that will attract, and meet the needs of both those seeking to prepare for careers in fields concerned with international conflicts and those with a general intellectual interest in contemporary security issues

- provide you with a research-active teaching environment which gives you a good grounding in the study of study of international conflict and war, co-operation, security and peace

This postgraduate programme in mediation and conflict resolution, now in its fifth year, provides a thorough, practical and exciting introduction to this developing area.

Still the only course of its kind in the UK, the programme is rigorous and multi-disciplinary, exposing you to a wide range of approaches as well as being taught by experts from across the UK.

The skills of conflict resolution are crucial in contemporary life. Professionals in business, public bodies and the law are increasingly expected to act in a collaborative way and to resolve disputes without the delay and expense of litigation. Mediation is fast becoming a core skill. For those working in international settings the core modules can be combined with other classes such as International Human Rights Law to provide the foundation for work with charities and non-governmental organisations committed to conflict resolution.

In response to popular demand, from 2014/15 you can graduate with either an LLM or MSc. Students whose dissertations deal with significant legal or justice questions receive recognition via an LLM. Those who take a social science or empirical approach will graduate with an MSc. This division reflects the range of students taking the course, who include:

You’ll study

The course can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis via a combination of evening and weekend classes, distance learning and personal study.

On a full-time basis, the LLM/MSc requires you to complete three modules in each of two semesters followed by a dissertation in a chosen research topic. Part-time students would normally undertake three modules per year.

As well as a rigorous theoretical grounding in the principles of mediation and conflict resolution, the course provides opportunities for you to acquire the skills of a mediator through simulations and case studies.

Mediation clinic

A unique aspect of studying for this qualification is that, as a student on the course, you can become a member of the Mediation Clinic. This is a student-led mediation service for the Greater Glasgow area.

The clinic exists to help people resolve disputes without going to court or tribunal. Since February 2014, it's been providing an in-court mediation service for small claims party litigants at Glasgow Sheriff Court. Each mediation is conducted by a lead mediator and student mediator.

Our library has a wide range of law reports, legislation, serials and monographs. It also has duplicate sets of key law report series, houses extensive collections in government publications and other related areas.

You’ll have access to a wide range of electronic information sources which can be accessed from home, including all the major legal databases.

Course awards

Graduates at Certificate, Diploma or Masters level all fulfil the training requirements for the Scottish Mediation Register.

There are normally two assessments for each class – a practical and written assessment.

Careers

Many students take their qualification into their existing professions, for example law, human resources, construction, education, management, social work and trade unions. A number of large law firms now have dispute resolution departments. Legal practitioners find the qualification a useful addition to their CV. HR managers who have taken the course report regular use of their mediation skills. Managers and social workers say they use them daily.

Former students are now working in community, homelessness and family mediation. Others have integrated mediation into their business offering.

Our research programmes provide a combination of formal research training and individual supervision within a supportive environment, with regular interaction between staff and students. For example, the School runs a weekly Graduate Research Training Seminar, where students are encouraged to present their work and receive feedback from peers and staff. Conflict Analysis Research Centre (CARC)
Kent has been at the forefront of conflict negotiation and resolution for almost 50 years. The Conflict Analysis Research Centre brings together academics working on different aspects of conflict and security as well as PhD and Master’s students studying International Conflict Analysis, International Law and International Relations. Current research includes an investigation into how migrant communities can support peacebuilding in their home society and how South Africa and the UK treat refugees and security. The Centre is also at the forefront of trying to resolve actual conflicts – for example, it played a role in the Moldova-Transnistria peace process and has supported reconciliation efforts in Africa.

Global Europe Centre (GEC)
The Global Europe Centre is a pioneering research-led learning centre focusing on the study of Europe and its relations with the outside world. The GEC’s research focus is on contemporary policy challenges to Europe and its nation states, the engagement with policy-makers and policy-shapers is at the core of its activities. The GEC mission is to promote excellence, through innovative research and knowledge exchange and to facilitate research-driven impact through its learning and teaching activities. The GEC’s activities include dissemination of policy-relevant research via publications, research-led knowledge transfer workshops, conferences and public lectures, and keynote addresses by leading public figures. The Master of Science in International Business Negotiation offers two semesters of courses that concentrate on both theory and practice.

The Master of Science in International Business Negotiation includes interactive courses such as Culture and Negotiation Strategy, Power and Leadership, and Introduction to Conflict Management among others.

Students will learn put theory into practice through courses such as Project Management and Negotiation Strategy and Company Observation.

The Master of Science in International Business Negotiation Curriculum:

The program consists of 2 consecutive semesters of courses (September – May) followed by a professional experience (from June onwards). The curriculum is developed around core courses and specialization courses in Business, Human Resources, Conflict Prevention and Resolution. It also includes French or foreign language classes.

French language classes:

French language lessons are mandatory for non-Francophone international students. Francophone students may choose German, Italian, Chinese, or Spanish.

The course is based on the theoretical foundations of mediation and includes analysis of conflict theory, negotiation theory and approaches to conflict intervention and marries this with intensive practice skills development throughout the year. It explores multiple fields for the application and practice of mediation and conflict intervention in society today including Families, Workplace Mediation, Commercial Mediation, Restorative Justice, Conflict Resolution in Education, Peacemaking, Community Mediation and Multiparty Policy Disputes. The programme prepares students for professional certification in mediation with the Mediator’s Institute of Ireland.

The course is structured around theoretical presentations and skills development through exercises and role-play and the introduction to specialised areas of mediation practice as mentioned above.

Accreditation

The Diploma is aimed at those who wish to develop mediation skills for application in their area of work or for developing a career in mediation. Graduates will receive a Diploma in Mediation from the Edward Kennedy Institute, Maynooth University and those who successfully take the Mediation Roleplay Competency Assessment can apply to the Mediator’s Institute of Ireland for Certified Status as a Mediator.

Assessment

Students must complete two assignments per module and take part in a competency assessment of mediation skills at end of year.


The Diploma is aimed at those who wish to develop mediation skills for application in their area of work or for developing a career in mediation. Successful graduates of the programme will receive a Diploma in Mediation from the Edward Kennedy Institute, Maynooth University and will have passed a competency assessment whereupon they may register with the Mediator’s Institute of Ireland as a certified mediator.

Graduates will generally find work in this field through self employment. Agencies which provide a conflict management consultancy and/or mediation service employ mediators. Many graduates use the knowledge and skills gained on the course for application in their current employment.

This course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the legal framework within which construction organisations and projects are managed, including the resolution of disputes that arise. You will develop your capabilities to analyse the nature of the risks in construction, general strategies for allocating them and systems for managing their occurrence.

You will develop your professional skills to be able to interpret contracts and appreciate the controversies surrounding commonly used standards forms of construction contracts. This will involve you gaining techniques for research and enquiry to create and interpret relevant aspects of construction law and contract administration. In addition, you will acquire the skills to review and critically examine the implications of complex construction case law relating this to real world settings.

Overall, the course will prepare you to participate in dispute resolution processes as an advisor to or representative of the parties to the dispute or as an arbitrator, mediator , adjudicator or other related dispute practitioner.

Why Wolverhampton?

As with many other similar courses offered by other institutions, it is currently accredited by the RICS, and the intention is to confirm accreditation with RICS once internal validation is complete. However, several features distinguish this course from the others.

The teaching faculty comprises distinguished construction, engineering and law academics, practising construction lawyers and eminent dispute resolution practitioners offering professional services as arbitrators, mediators, adjudicators, claims consultants and expert witnesses across the globe.

Very active engagement of the faculty in research assessed to be of world class standing has enabled curriculum innovation to cover non-traditional subjects such as the theory and practice of negotiation, the FIDIC family of contracts, conflict of laws and international arbitration. Curriculum flexibility allows students from diverse backgrounds to construct programme of study to enhance a wide range of future practice aspirations

The learning resources (textbooks, journals, multimedia systems, and online resources), which are as extensive as anywhere else, are always being added to with financial support from professional institutions such as the Society of Construction Law.

  • demonstrate high level expertise on: the sources/causes of disputes in the construction and engineering industries; strategies for their avoidance; construction law; and dispute resolution methods
  • synthesise the contract documents assembled for any project to derive the legal framework governing its execution.
  • analyse a wide range of dispute situations and identify and evaluate respective party positions by reference to principles of construction law and dispute resolution to arrive at appropriate advice on resolution options.
  • demonstrate the behaviours and procedural, communication and ethical competencies required in such roles as contract consultant, adjudicator, mediator or arbitrator.
  • conduct research into advanced areas of construction law and dispute resolution and write it up publishable standard.

School of International Arbitration at Queen Mary

The School of International Arbitration (SIA) at Queen Mary aims to actively participate in the academic discussion on arbitration. The SIA is a research-lead institution that focuses on the study of the particular problems arising in arbitration, and contributes to the development of arbitration theory. It also aims to teach and train a future generation of lawyers that want to be involved in international arbitration. Frequently, lawyers that practice international arbitration, whether as counsel or as arbitrators, have a limited knowledge of the complex theoretical problems of this specialist subject. The School takes a comparative and practice-oriented approach to the teaching of arbitration so that the students obtain a deep understanding of the special characteristics and needs of international arbitration.

Professional Exemptions
QLLM006 - Alternative Dispute Resolution- Students who successfully complete this module will be exempt from the Introduction to Alternative Dispute Resolution with CIArb and can therefore apply to become an Associate of CIArb.

QLLM043 - International and Comparative Commercial Arbitration- Students who successfully complete this module will be exempt from Module 2: Law of Arbitration. Practicing lawyers may be exempt from Module 1 also meaning that they can apply to become a Member of CIArb.

QLLM052 - International Construction Contracts and Arbitration- Students who successfully complete this module will be exempt from Module 2: Law of Arbitration AND Module 2: Law of Adjudication. Practicing lawyers may be exempt from Module 1 also meaning that they can apply to become a Member of CIArb.

International Arbitration Award Writing Exam - LLM students who successfully complete the International Arbitration Award Writing Exam will be exempt from Module 3: Practice Procedure Drafting and Deciding AND Module 4: Award Writing (International). LLM students who successfully complete module QLLM043 OR QLLM052 and the International Arbitration Award Writing Exam and who are practicing lawyers may be exempt from Module 1 also meaning that they can apply to become a Fellow of CIArb (Peer Interview may be required).
