Their ability to provide natural resources such as food, water and energy is at risk and waning. Under conditions of globalization, these processes are most forceful in developing countries and emerging economies with high growth rates, low awareness, loss of existing traditional knowledge bases and weak governance structures. This calls for specialists and leadership in order to develop and employ managerial, economical, governance, and technical solutions – in short, professionals with lateral understanding and trans-disciplinary approaches for a sustainable development.

The objective of the program is to form such experts. Participants are provided with appropriate knowledge and skills to analyze current problems related to the usage and management of natural resources.

Target groups of the program are recently graduated professionals with working experience in public or private institutions, authorities and enterprises of the natural resources sector. The applicants should be active in or dealing with natural resources management and have an interest in learning and working in an intercultural and multidisciplinary environment.

The master program “Natural Resources Management & Development” (NRM) provides a practice oriented and skills-based learning experience in which students develop their capacity for critical thinking, and creative problem solving. It addresses bachelor’s degree holders principally of Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences, who aim to deepen their knowledge in Natural Resources Management and wish to acquire management and leadership skills as well as regional and intercultural competences. These experts ought to be able to assess natural resources and develop appropriate solutions considering the complex linkages with economic, social and ecological aspects.

Contents

The program consists of basic modules, including “Management of Natural Resources Systems”, “Natural Resources Economics and Governance”, ”International Cooperation and Development” and “Project and Business Management” with the aim of providing an overview on natural resources management, economics, project management and the regional and institutional context. In addition, the participants select 10 specialized electives related to topics of natural resources management emphasizing the particular situation.

The fourth semester will focus on the preparation of the master thesis. Internships and research stays if possible together with a local institution or company guarantee the practical orientation of the master research. The UCL School of Pharmacy has an international reputation in natural drug discovery and the evaluation of drug leads from natural sources. This MSc has been designed in response to ever-increasing interest in the development and use of medicines derived from natural products.

About this degree

This programme aims to train students in the methods used to analyse and characterise medicinal natural products, to examine the safety and efficacy of currently used herbal medicines, analytical and bioassay methods, and the ethnopharmaceutical uses of plants from traditional systems of medicines.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of five core modules (120 credits), and a research dissertation (60 credits).

Recent graduates of this programme have progressed to careers in herbal, phytopharmaceutical or health food sectors. Some are involved in drug discovery while others pursue a PhD in the UK or overseas.

The consolidation of different disciplines has not only a methodological dimension but a cultural and a human one, because interdisciplinary team work requires knowledge sharing and effective communication.

The National Film and Television School’s Science and Natural History Masters focuses on developing Producers and Directors. Therefore, as part of the course students will be exposed to the development and production challenges of specialist factual genres, such as Landmark / Blue Chip (interchangeable terms for high budget, high production value programming mainly used in a pure wildlife context), mini landmarks, Children’s, People and Nature, Live, Expedition films, Magazine formats, Obs-doc etc. In addition there will be a focus on promoting cross-genre ideas to foster creativity.

Editorial policy and standards, together with codes of practice relating to science and the filming of animals, and Health and Safety will be fully explored.

Students will gain practical experience in both the research and development of programming of this type whilst also developing a body of work that showcases their practical film making skills and innovation within the genre.

The programme explores the ways in which developmental needs can be met through better understanding and improved management of renewable natural resources, without placing unsustainable demands on the environment.

The emphasis is on tropical applications, the Natural Resources Institute's principal area of expertise.

Degree structure

The MSc by Research consists of an extended research project and a limited number of taught courses and is available for students with the appropriate background and interest and is based on suitable academic performance in their first term of studies. The programme provides students with an overview and awareness of natural resources, their management and sustainable development, and provides training which enables students to apply the principles of sustainable natural resource management to their own disciplines.

Courses will be selected from the portfolio offered through the MSc Sustainable Environmental Management and MSc Agriculture for Sustainable Development.

This MSc will prepare students for highly skilled, multidisciplinary managerial roles in the natural resources sector across the globe. The programme is transcontinental (offered by UCL and the University of South Australia (UniSA)), is delivered by UCL Chemical Engineering, UCL Earth Sciences, UCL School of Management, and the Future Industries Institute at UniSA, and designed with significant input from industry.

About this degree

Students develop knowledge of geology, geosciences, geochemistry and the chemical processes used to transform raw materials into commmodities; managerial skills; and an understanding of the relationship between limited natural resources, economic forces, and the implications for society. The M.Sc. in Engineering for Natural Risk Management aims to train professionals capable of working in all sectors of safety and civil protection, both public and private, at national and international level. Thanks to its multidisciplinary nature, the program will provide the skills to coordinate the activities of a complex system such as civil protection.

The student of the M.Sc. in Engineering for Natural Risk Management at the end of his studies will have the following knowledge and understanding capabilities:

a) Knowledge of physical phenomena that generate disasters

b) Capacity of understanding of the mechanisms of interaction between natural events and industrial activities that can generate technological risk

c) Ability to understand and evaluate the legal implications related to the management of emergency situations.

The acquired knowledge may be applied for the:

a) Use the most advanced technologies in order to assess risk exposure and vulnerability, predict the occurrence of catastrophic events and post disasters impact assessment.

Energy is the largest and one of the most dynamic industry sectors. It raises many challenges both politically and technically, from traditional exploration and production of fossil fuels to more recent mining extraction methods (hydraulic fracturing or 'fracking'), renewables and environmental protection. Queen Mary is only one of a few universities in the world to offer an LLM in Energy and Natural Resources Law and this programme builds upon well-established areas at Queen Mary, such as Commercial Law, Dispute Resolution, Environmental Law and Regulation.

Increasing urbanization, growing wealth concentration, climate change and environmental degradation are rapidly raising exposure to natural hazards in the developed and developing world. Growing numbers of stakeholders are thus seeking ways of reducing the risk from natural hazards. UCL's Natural Hazards PG Cert offers students a better understanding of natural hazards and the means by which their impacts on people, communities and business can be mitigated and managed.

About this degree

A strong emphasis is placed on developing an improved understanding of

natural hazards and the processes that drive them. The latest research is

used to evaluate the nature of available data, the conclusions we can draw

from them and their limitations. The content focuses on the most destructive and costliest hazards, notably windstorms, floods and earthquakes, but also addresses geotechnical topics such as dam and reservoir safety and radioactive waste management. The programme provides students with intellectual and practical tools for making more informed decisions in their professional capacities.

Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits.

The programme consists of two taught core modules (40 credits) and an independent research project (20 credits).

This multidisciplinary area is the study of computational systems that use ideas and gain inspiration from natural systems. The MRes programme explores current topics in natural computation, such as evolutionary algorithms, co-evolution, evolutionary design, nature-inspired optimisation techniques, evolutionary games, novel learning algorithms, artificial neural networks and theory of natural computation.

There is an increasing need from industry for professionals with knowledge of natural computation techniques. Our graduates develop a solid foundation to pursue a research and development career in industry or further studies.

Course details

The MRes is a Masters degree by research. This means that you are taught core principles and then develop these skills by doing interesting, innovative research, supported by academic staff and peers. This is structured so that you learn how to plan, organise and manage your time; you learn what it is to be a scientific researcher; you help contribute to the development of new knowledge; you learn intellectual skills such as argumentation, exposition, and reasoning; and you develop as an individual by improving your communication skills, writing, collaborative working and creativity.

The mini project module consists of a research project on the in-depth investigation of a chosen topic coming from industry (strongly encouraged) or academia.

The compulsory Research Skills module provides you with the basis of transferable knowledge and skills necessary for a successful research-oriented career in industry or academia, with a particular orientation to computing-based disciplines.

Your research thesis project consists of solving a substantial problem using natural computation techniques (including hybrid techniques). Industrial co-supervisors are used whenever appropriate, and you will be required to apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired to solve a difficult problem.

Learning and teaching

This innovative MRes programme is led and run primarily by the world-leading Natural Computation Group and CERCIA in the School of Computer Science. The group has over 40 full-time researchers, including teaching staff, research fellows and associates, PhD students, and academic visitors.

Taught modules are assessed by a mixture of written examinations and continuous assessment. The first semester mini-project is assessed by a written report. Your thesis will be examined by an internal and an external examiner.

Our MSc programme is taught either by distance learning or through residential blocks in one of the most innovative environmental buildings in the UK, or via a mixture of the two.

The Master’s programme in Earth Surface and Water involves the study of natural and human-induced physical and geochemical processes, patterns, and dynamics of the Earth’s continental and coastal systems. This two-year programme provides you with knowledge that is essential to manage the planet sustainably, guarantee the availability of natural resources for future generations, and understand and avert natural hazards.

The main subject areas you will study consist of the dynamics of coastal and river systems, (geo-)hydrological processes, groundwater remediation, land degradation in dry lands and mountainous regions, natural hazards, and delta evolution on centennial and longer time scales.

CORE AREAS OF RESEARCH

The Earth Surface and Water programme trains students to quantitatively study the natural and human-induced physical and chemical processes, patterns, and dynamics of Earth’s continental and coastal systems as well as their responses to global change. Students explore and understand the modelling capabilities of the past, present, and future as well as the evolution of Earth’s environment, including human impact on this evolution.

In the programme, you will address questions such as:

  • How do river floods affect delta systems and their inhabitants?
  • How can we use natural processes under climate change to maintain safe - yet attractive and dynamic - coastlines?
  • How can satellite images be used to estimate erosion losses?
  • Will we have enough water to sustain the world’s rapidly increasing population in 2050?
  • What is the most efficient way to clean an oil spill that enters the soil and groundwater? 

The programme trains students to combine field observations and laboratory experiments with the latest developments in remote sensing and computational methods. Research developed by our staff and students has a strong international profile, encompasses scales ranging from microscopic to global, and concerns both past and contemporary processes.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVE

Physical geographers, geochemists, and hydrologists are necessary to identify nature’s actions in our modern world, especially with society’s ever-increasing pressure on the natural environment. The Earth Surface and Water programme therefore focusses on imminent societal problems, such as society’s increased vulnerability to climate and environmental changes and to natural hazards such as flooding, storms, and mass movements. It also addresses the threats and opportunities resulting from human activity on our physical environment, including the hydrological cycle.
