Why this course?

This MSc course provides engineers and physical scientists with knowledge and understanding of the medical devices used in diagnosis and treatment of patients.

The course is delivered by staff of the EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training in Medical Devices and Health Technologies (CDT), with colleagues from Engineering, the Life Sciences and Physical Sciences. There’s also input from clinical advisers from the NHS and elsewhere.

The training programme equips you with the basic knowledge and terminology in current life science subjects to allow you to explore topics in your own research project with direction from your supervisor.

You'll gain practical experience in the life science techniques and an appreciation of interdisciplinary project work.

You’ll study

This credit-based modular degree comprises assessed instructional classes and project work.
You’ll also undertake a research project. You’ll choose from a list of relevant industrial or clinical projects, and submit a thesis.

The principal component of this degree is an intensive novel research project providing 'hands-on' training in methods and techniques at the cutting edge of scientific research. The programme is particularly suitable for those wishing to embark on an academic career, with a strong track record of students moving into graduate research at UCL and elsewhere.

Degree information

Students develop a systematic approach to devising experiments and/or computations and gain familiarity with a broad range of synthetic, analytical and spectroscopic techniques, acquiring skills for the critical analysis of their experimental and computational observations. They also broaden their knowledge of chemistry through a selection of taught courses and are able to tailor the programme to meet their personal interests.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of one core module (30 credits), four optional modules (15 credits each) and a research project (90 credits).

Dissertation/report
All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 15,000 words and a viva voce examination (90 credits).

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory classes and research supervision. Assessment is through the dissertation, unseen written examinations, research papers, a written literature survey, and an oral examination. All students will be expected to attend research seminars relevant to their broad research interest.

The course

This course explores the frontiers of science on the nanoscale. It provides a strong grounding in basic nanoscience before progressing to advanced topics.

Taught classes have been developed from the many years of nanoscience research at the University in areas such as:

- nanoparticle fabrication and functionalisation
- chemical physics
- computational modelling of the nanoworld

You’ll study

Two semesters of formal teaching are followed by a three-month intensive project.

- Research project
Following the taught classes, you’ll undertake a research intensive project in a relevant nanoscience topic.

The projects take place primarily in research labs located in the University’s physical science departments. There are some opportunities for relevant industrial placements.
