Course Overview

The MA Music Industry Entrepreneurship is delivered on the UWTSD London campus and at Tileyard Studios, King’s Cross, London. Tileyard Studios is the largest professional music community in Europe featuring 82 recording studios, 110 entertainment businesses and the new Tileyard Education Centre.

The programme is designed to prepare students for a future as label owners, publishers, managers, promoters, new technology pioneers and creative business specialists. In addition to the UWTSD London Campus facilities and resources, Tileyard Studios provides students with direct access to more than 1000 creative industry entrepreneurs, while developing cutting edge thinking and insight into the management and growth of independent record labels, music publishing, artist management, promotion, marketing and new technology entrepreneurship.

The course provides a critical understanding of music and entertainment management and organisations in a global context both on and offline. The core of the programme focuses on digital and independent entrepreneurial skillsets and practice as well as more traditional business methods within the context of the new mixed media economy. The course consist of six taught modules in Part I and an industry-related major business project in Part II.

Alongside specialised modules in Creative Music Management, Marketing, Live Event Management and New Media Technology, MA Music Industry Entrepreneurship students will develop a major business plan project for presentation to a panel of seed and incubation investors and business angels, curated by Tileyard Studios, seeking to invest in new creative business opportunities and IP.

Students will have access to the new Tileyard Education Centre featuring a professional recording studio, audio-visual tech lab and writing production rooms where they can collaborate with other creative MA students such as Commercial Songwriting and Production.

This industry-centric course also includes regular, large-scale industry networking events, held at Tileyard Studios in partnership with Notting Hill Music and sponsors, an unrivalled masterclass series, a one-to-one electronic mentoring program, work-based learning projects and access to the annual calendar of industry-centric events held on site at Tileyard Studios.

This course is highly regarded in both music business education and the industry at large. It will prepare you to become one of the next generation of music industry leaders and entrepreneurs. All teaching staff on the course are currently working in the music industry, and every week there are a number of high-level industry guests. You will need to be a self-motivated and open-minded student, as this is an intense course, but one which can help you to progress your career across a wide range of music business disciplines.

Working with music industry leaders and organisations, the course has developed a unique curriculum. You will be able to combine a strong underpinning of key business skills (entrepreneurialism, leadership, organisational management, and marketing with essential music industry management knowledge (strategic innovation technology, intellectual property and copyright) and academic concepts and theories relevant to the industry today.

Formal teaching is conducted through sessions which each include a formal lecture, industry guest speaker and seminar exercises. Each of the six modules has a minimum of two assignments. The final project (equivalent to three modules) is a report of a minimum of 12,000 words.

MA Music Industry Management & Promotion is designed to facilitate the commercial exploitation of music related activities and is suitable both for aspiring music business people and for music creators who wish to manage their own careers. It provides an opportunity to study the music business at postgraduate level and to get real hands-on experience of working within the industry. Students will combine their academic studies with industrial experience, including activities at the Factory 251 venue in Manchester, providing contact with significant industry figures connected with this culturally important company.

INDUSTRY LINKS

The University has established good links with theatres and arts organisations across the North West including the New Continental in Preston, the Nuffield Theatre in Lancaster, hÅb in Manchester, the Blue Coat Gallery in Liverpool, and LANWest as well as other arts venues in the region. The School has in the past hosted a number of visiting artists and companies of national and international standing.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

All practical classes are delivered in the Media Factory which houses three fully equipped theatres as well as sound recording studios, film and photography studios and a range of music rehearsal rooms and seminar spaces. Lectures take place in purpose built suites which are equipped with digital projection facilities. The programme is taught by professional artists and theatre practitioners who are established leaders in their own field.

It is intrinsic to the course to engage in "real world", professional domain, industrial projects. Some of these activities are initiated by the course tutors however, as part of the curriculum, students are encouraged to identify and develop their own projects that resonate with their individual professional aspirations and career goals. Such activities provide exposure to people and organisations outside the university, hence providing the opportunity to develop extensive networks of contacts and professional relationships that may prove useful on completion of the course.

FURTHER INFORMATION

On this course you will study current practice in the music industry, both in the recording industry and in media and live events. You will consider different business models within the industry and look at the way creative products are marketed and promoted. You will engage with the key issue being confronted by the industry; the impact of new technology and the development of the digital marketplace. You will undertake research into the challenges and opportunities that have arisen as a result of rapid technological change in the creative industries.

The course will also give you the opportunity to engage with music industry practice at a professional level and in industrial context. Working on and contributing to field based commercial projects under the direction of an experienced industrial practitioner will enable you to gain hands on experience of a range of Music Industry activities and develop your practical and interpersonal skills. It will also provide a vantage point for in depth reflection on Music Industry practices and a chance to develop your own commercial, professional and industrial strategies.

One of the significant distinct advantages that distinguishes this course from others is the supported engagement in real world professional activities. On completion of the program each student will have worked on a number of projects affording them important experience of key music business activities and numerous items to add to their portfolio of professional experience.

Tutor initiated projects include the generation, release and promotion of a compilation album, and the construction, management and promotion of live music event activity at Factory251, Manchester. Students from the taught postgraduate programmes in the School of Music have gone on to a wide range of careers, including various positions in the music industries, museums, arts administration, journalism, publishing, and teaching. PhDs from the School of Music are in full-time lectureships around the world (e.g. Canada, Sweden). The MMus and MA in Popular Music and Music Industry Studies have been recognised by the AHRC as appropriate training for advanced research and all three pathways prepare students for a level of further training equivalent to doctoral study.

The focus of the degree will be a major project: working with a tutor, most of our students devise a music and management project to combine and reflect upon music management theory and practice. This could include, for example, organising an event, acting as a consultant during a work placement you organise, or managing a musical group. Alternatively, you can complete a dissertation on a topic of your choice.

A core module throughout the year will introduce you to research methods in music, equipping you with the skills to support the rest of your studies. You’ll also choose from optional modules to specialise in one of computer music, aesthetics, musicology, editing, psychology of music, performance, composition, artistic management or live music promotion.

In both semesters you’ll study core modules run by Leeds University Business School. These will introduce you to strategic management, marketing for managers and how businesses in the creative industries are actually run and managed, applying concepts and theories to understand the business models of media companies, as well as the impact of digital technologies and the rise of exciting new markets.

The Masters provides a grounding in the development of popular music research as a subfield of musicology, and encourages critical thinking about:

  • musical texts, artefacts and ecologies
  • audiences, reception and questions of interpretation
  • creativity, industries and production
  • repertoires broad in historical range and geographical scope

The course addresses contemporary issues of significance to academics, musicians, industries and organisations involved with popular music.

You'll develop research skills, critical thinking and rigorous methodological expertise with a range of applications both within the academy (at doctoral level) and outside (in music related industries, marketing, arts management, museums and archives, the sciences).

Although a knowledge of and passion for popular music is vital, it is not essential that your first degree is in music or popular music.

Our three research centres, Music, Mind, Machine; Sheffield Performer and Audience Research Centre, and Music and Wellbeing provide a hub for research collaborations in music psychology and audience research.

Performance is an important part of our work. You will have the chance to participate in orchestras, music theatre, contemporary music, folk and world traditions. We have strong links with the community, giving you the chance to volunteer with local arts organisations.

Your career

Our graduates are employed by universities, colleges, concert agencies and music promoters. Many work in education; others are performers in various genres, in the UK and abroad. Some work in recording studios.

Studios and equipment

We have a postgraduate research suite and several studios for advanced compositional work, software development, sound recording, laboratory and field experimentation, transcription, music notation and other research applications. You will have access to scores, books, periodicals, recordings and online resources.

Through a series of graduate study days you will be able to use the tools for digital recording, video and film. We also have excellent practice facilities and collections of historical and world music instruments.

Our team of professional musicians bring performance expertise to the department – including clarinettist Sarah Watts, pianist Inja Davidovic, jazz guitarist Ronan McCullagh and North Indian tabla and santoor performer John Ball.

Funding

University and faculty funding is available each year. The closing date for applications is mid-January. The department has a number of studentships available for our strongest candidates. The closing date for these is the end of April. You can also apply for a small grant to support your postgraduate research project. More details available here

The Performance Hub, opened in 2011, has a diverse range of fully equipped music teaching, performance and practice rooms (accommodating single person to large band / ensemble), two high-end professional recording studios, and two bespoke technology suites boasting sixty Apple iMacs running industry standard software including Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Max, Pure Data and SuperCollider.

Our two recording studios offer the perfect blend of digital and analogue technologies giving students the opportunity to combine classic analogue recording technique with the flexibility and reliability digital technology provides. As well as a dedicated live room each for recording, for increased flexibility and choice of room acoustic, any of the music rehearsal rooms surrounding each studio can also be patched into the studio's control room.

The course will equip teachers, performers and music graduates with a diverse range of skills and the experience to enhance their career prospects. You will develop practical, critical, analytical and research skills from studying a broad spectrum of repertoire and literature.

You will acquire transferable skills relevant for pursuing a research degree and a range of employment opportunities in areas such as the professional music industry, education (secondary/FE), music retail, community music, self-employment, freelance performing, arts administration, research assistantships/studentships, and employment in HE institutions.

Critical Perspectives on Music Production

Positioned at the beginning of the MA, this module is designed to provide you with an understanding of the theoretical and musicological heritage that has framed the study of music production. It comprises investigations into concepts that have shaped the study of music production as well as an examination of the epistemological and ideological frameworks that are impacting upon the evolution of these concepts.

Technology & Creativity

This module enables you to develop an understanding of the ways in which the practice of music production is a recent innovation dependent on the development of recording and related technology. You will engage in analysis, debate and research into the development of the technological tools and explore how they have influenced the development of music production practice. You will also explore how the development of the tools has been influenced by the practitioners, the audiences and the institutions of the music industry.

Producing Recorded Music

This module will deepen and broaden your understanding of the theoretical and musicological heritage that has framed the study of music production. In particular, it will provide you with the opportunity to develop, test and apply theoretical models in your own production practice.

The Business of Music Production

This module critiques the ways in which music is bought and sold. You will examine the influences of the audiences and markets on musical features and products. Following this you will identify paradigms and patterns in the commodification of music that have enabled a musical economy to be developed, and which will support the future of music business.

Music Production Project

This module represents your major project on the MA programme, providing an opportunity to develop your own practice and research relating to music production. In this extended period of practice-based research you are expected to synthesise the practical, reflective and conceptual developments in your work over the course of the programme.

The Faculty understands the importance of a strong grounding in research knowledge and skills, enterprise and innovation as part of a balanced postgraduate education.

You can choose to study one of the following three, 20 credit common modules. Each of these has a different focus, enabling you to select the module that will be most beneficial to you.

- Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship
This module aims to develop your knowledge of the methods to identify, develop and manage enterprise and innovation in the creative sector. It will then help you apply this to your own entrepreneurial project.

- Research and Practice in the Creative and Cultural Industries
The focus of this module is on the development of research knowledge and skills, while also encouraging critical engagement with approaches to creative practice. You will also explore ideas, debates and issues in the creative and cultural industries.

- Research Paradigms
This module focuses on research paradigms and their theoretical underpinnings. It also looks at key conceptual tools drawn from a wide range of subject areas relevant to postgraduate research in the creative industries.

Learning and teaching methods

The MSc Music Engineering and Production degree is taught through lectures, seminars and workshops, with emphasis on the practical application of your knowledge.

All assessments are coursework-based, allowing a detailed application of your knowledge and experience. Assessment is through continuous assignments, seminars and a dissertation based on real-life scenarios. The final major project is presented through written submission alongside an oral examination.

The Masters project may be in any area derived from, or related to, the course or the general discipline of music engineering and production, e.g, sound design in animation, music video, album recording and release, and sound synthesis. There are also opportunities to work on academic staff research projects, or with one of several PhD researchers in the Faculty’s Division of Music and Sound.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Engineering and production professionals work as music producers, sound engineers, writers and arrangers, sound designers and mixers/remixers in surround. Career opportunities will vary according to an individual’s capabilities and passion, but it is expected that graduates of USW’s MSc Music Engineering and Production should play a full role in shaping the future of music and sound in the UK and further afield.

Assessment methods

Learning Through Employment:
Learning Through Employment is a University of South Wales framework that offers students who are already in employment the opportunity to gain credits towards a postgraduate qualification.

The programme is structured so that the majority of learning takes place through active and reflective engagement with your work activities, underpinned by the appropriate academic knowledge and skills. As such, it has been is designed for practising professionals to provide them with the tools to succeed in the workplace.

This truly flexible approach means that final projects can be based on an agreed area of work, benefitting students and employers, and because the majority of the project is carried out in the workplace, it can potentially be undertaken anywhere in the world.

All great songs start with a great story, and this course will build on your storytelling and songwriting techniques and performance skills. It will also help you develop the strong networks needed to drive your career forward in the modern music industry.

You will study traditional creative songwriting alongside modern music production practice. You will analyse case studies across all genres to find your inspiration and create your own musical voice.

Working with experienced industry professionals, you will explore the technical and creative aspects of writing, recording and arranging, including storytelling techniques, the crafting of effective melodies and where best to place the hooks in a song, in order to develop a wide range of musical scores. You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with peers across our suite of music courses to compose and produce songs in our industry-standard studios.

This course will give you the confidence to develop your musical portfolio to enhance your career as an established artist.

As a student of the School of Film, Music & Peforming Arts, you will join our vibrant community of producers, giving you access to expertise from top industry professionals.
