The programme is delivered through a combination of web-based taught lectures, seminars, tutorials, online research forum, group project work and workshops. Assessment is through unseen written examination, coursework, and the dissertation and viva voce. Candidates are examined in the year in which they complete the programme.

The MRes in Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA) has been established by leading international researchers and clinicians within the Universities of Liverpool, Sheffield and Newcastle as part of our MRC/Arthritis Research UK funded Centre for Integrated research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA) initiative (http://www.cimauk.org). CIMA researchers investigate why our bones, joints, ligaments and muscles function less well as we age, and how age related decline of the musculoskeletal tissues and age related clinical disorders (such as osteoporosis and arthritis) can be ameliorated or prevented.

Why is the CIMA MRes unique?

The programme provides you with access to state-of-the-art resources and facilities from across the three CIMA partner sites (Liverpool, Sheffield and Newcastle), with teaching and supervision delivered by leading researchers and clinical practitioners. As a CIMA student, you will be allied with the wider cohort of CIMA researchers, and participate in regular CIMA scientific meetings and events.

The CIMA MRes Programme

The first semester (60 credits) comprises taught modules which will ground you in current approaches and techniques to study the integrated musculoskeletal system as a whole and the effects ageing has on this system. These modules are delivered by e-learning, including live interactions with tutors and peers, online lectures and presentations and discussion forums. You will supplement the online component via self-directed learning. During the second semester, you will undertake a research module which will provide you with the opportunity to apply your knowledge to a project under the expertise of supervisors based across the CIMA consortium. You will receive multidisciplinary skills training specific to your individual training needs, and have the opportunity to undertake an exchange visit at another CIMA site (e.g. to learn a particular research technique in another laboratory).

Description

The Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy courses will provide you with the basic science and clinical knowledge and analytical skills to comprehensively assess and manage individuals with musculoskeletal problems. You will learn how to design, implement and evaluate care and rehabilitation programmes tailored to the needs of your individual patients.

The courses offer you flexibility, to study either full or part-time and the choice of whether to study for a full master’s qualification or a Postgraduate Diploma.

The MSc consists of modules totalling 180 credits including a research project and dissertation worth 60 credits. The Postgraduate Diploma requires completed modules with a total of 120 credits to meet the requirements of the award. If you are studying full-time you will complete the course in one year studying from September to September. Part-time students will complete the course over two years.

Course accreditation

Students on the MSc in Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (with Clinical Placements) are eligible for MACP membership on successful completion of the course. Students on the MSc in Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy are eligible to apply for MACP membership through the MACP portfolio route.

Regulating body

King’s College is regulated by the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

Location

The majority of learning for this degree takes place at the King’s College London Guy’s Campus. Please note that locations are determined by where each module is taught and may vary.

Research projects can take place in a variety of locations including King’s, occasionally other local universities and also in local hospitals, clinics or sports clubs.

Work placements can be held in any healthcare setting with a suitable MACP qualified mentor and mainly take place in the UK; Predominantly NHS outpatient physiotherapy departments, some private hospitals, private physiotherapy practices and sports clubs.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

You can expect to receive approximately 280 contact teaching hours for the MSc and 260 contact hours for the PG Dip during the courses. This will include lectures, seminars and practial sessions.

Students are expected to spend approximately two days a week studying independently and preparing for assignments during terms 1 and 2.

Students studying on the Advanced Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (with Clinical Placements) MSc and PG Dip will also go on clinical placements totalling at least 150 hours and will have direct contact time with their mentor for at least 50% of this time. Students are expected to spend approximately 50 hours consolidating learning from clinical placements and preparing for clinical assessments.

Students on both MSc courses will also undertake the Research project module which involves approximately 20 contact hours with their project supervisor(s) and approximately 600 hours self-study.

Assessment

The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of oral, practical and clinical assessments, written assignments, and written examination. MSc students will also be assessed through a written thesis.

  • Occupational Health Clearance and Disclosure and Barring service (DBS, formerly known as CRB) clearance checks are required.
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and professional indemnity cover (usually provided by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists) are required to undertake the programme.

Human Movement Laboratory

The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy. 

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

Practical Skills and Simulation Rooms

Our practical skills rooms are equipped so that you can learn and practise practical skills including palpation, massage and manipulation with other students before you work with real patients and clients.

We also have specialist classrooms for physiotherapy practise, including manual skills and exercise therapy rooms, which are equipped with treatment couches.

This is a specialised pathway of the MSc Advanced Professional Practice programme.

This part time new MSc course in Musculoskeletal Neuroscience offers musculoskeletal healthcare professionals, such as chiropractors, physiotherapists and osteopaths the opportunity to study modern neuroscience with a focus on the application in a clinical setting. 

This is particularly relevant at this time where there is a rapidly developing scientific interest and increasing application of modern clinical neuroscience in managing musculoskeletal* and related conditions.

Course Overview

The Musculoskeletal Neuroscience pathway includes the following:

• Neuropathology and Pathophysiology

• Clinical Neuroscience and Diagnosis

• Clinical Neuroscience and Therapeutics

The neuroscience units on this course adopt a self-directed approach. There is no taught material or attendance required on campus for the neuroscience units, however minimal attendance is required for some of the other units listed in our Unit Breakdown section.

Course description

Our MRes Experimental Medicine (Musculoskeletal) programme will give nurses, doctors, clinical researchers and research programme managers the skills needed to work in early phase clinical studies.

You will learn how to master experimental medicine with a focus on musculoskeletal through a combination of traditional teaching and hands-on learning that includes spending a year working closely with the Experimental Medicine Musculoskeletal Team of the Biomedical Research Centre while also taking four structured taught units.

The taught units will see you learn the details of designing and delivering Phase 1 clinical studies, understanding the pre-clinical data required before a clinical programme can commence, and how to optimise early clinical studies to provide evidence for progressing a promising drug or intervention into Phase II/III clinical testing.

Alongside the taught elements, you will have a named supervisor and be exposed to tasks required in the setup, delivery, interpretation and audit of a clinical study.

Nursing and physician students may participate in patient care, including new and follow-on patient clinics, treatment and care-giving episodes with patients.

For non-registered clinical researchers and research programme managers, no direct patient contact is envisaged and you may participate in clinical trial setup, protocol amendments, database setup, data entry, costing and billing for clinical research.

You will be able to choose two aspects of your direct clinical trial research experience to write up for your two research projects in a dissertation format. This will give you the skills and knowledge required to critically report medical, scientific and clinically related sciences for peer review.

The primary purpose of the MRes in Experimental Medicine (Musculoskeletal) is to provide you with the opportunity to work within a premier Biomedical Research Centre and, through a mix of taught and experiential learning, master the discipline of experimental medicine related to musculoskeletal.

The structure, mode of delivery and level of support allow you to progress towards a qualification at postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma or Masters level.

We offer two musculoskeletal pathways which enable you, as a clinician, to assess and manage patients with a range of musculoskeletal conditions beyond your normal scope of practice. Optional modules allow you to expand your musculoskeletal practice with a focus on imaging, including ultrasonography, or a focus on patient management including injection therapy.

The Centre for Integrated research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA) MRes is a research-based course with a taught component that is equivalent to an MSc. It provides a springboard into a career that involves a working knowledge of scientific research.

The course is designed for students with a BSc in the life sciences or another science discipline. It is also for intercalating and qualified MBBS or BDS students. You can study the course as a stand-alone qualification or as an entry route onto a PhD or MD.

The taught component of the course includes musculoskeletal ageing specific content. This content is delivered as a series of e-learning modules provided by Newcastle University and also the CIMA partner universities of Liverpool and Sheffield. You will also receive training in general research principles and in professional and key skills.

Your research project is a major element of the course. Your project involves 24 weeks of research in an area of musculoskeletal ageing. Supervision is by expert academic researchers in your field of interest. You will also do a placement at either Liverpool University or Sheffield University. These universities are our academic partners in the Centre for Integrated research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA) course.

About the course

Lead academic 2016: Professor Ilaria Bellantuono

This unique one-year programme is run by the Centre for Integrated research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA) and funded by Medical Research Council and Arthritis Research UK. CIMA is a collaboration between the University of Sheffield, the University of Liverpool and the University of Newcastle.

The course provides multidisciplinary research training on the musculoskeletal system as a whole in the context of ageing. The training has a strong focus on employability. Topics range from basic science to clinical aspects, from in vitro to in vivo models, and from the latest advances in the assessment of the musculoskeletal system to lifestyle interventions.

Although you’ll be based at Sheffield, the course involves exchange visits to the other universities.

Our study environment

You’ll be based in teaching hospitals that serve a population of over half a million people and refer a further two million. We also have close links with the University’s other health-related departments.

Our research funding comes from many sources including the NIHR, MRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, the Department of Health, EU, and prominent charities such as the Wellcome Trust, ARC, YCR, Cancer Research UK and BHF. Our partners and sponsors include Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, Astra Zeneca and Eli Lilly.

You’ll also benefit from our collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

How we teach

Classes are kept small (15–20 students) to make sure you get the best possible experience in laboratories and in clinical settings.

Our resources

We have a state-of-the-art biorepository and a £30m stem cell laboratory. The Sheffield Institute of Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) opened in November 2010. We also have microarray, genetics, histology, flow cytometry and high-throughput screening technology, and the latest equipment for bone and oncology research.

At our Clinical Research Facility, you’ll be able to conduct studies with adult patients and volunteers. The Sheffield Children’s Hospital houses a complementary facility for paediatric experimental medical research.

Hepatitis B policy

If your course involves a significant risk of exposure to human blood or other body fluids and tissue, you’ll need to complete a course of Hepatitis B immunisation before starting. We conform to national guidelines that are in place to protect patients, health care workers and students.

Principles of Human Nutrition: relevance to ageing; Biology of Ageing; Biology and Assessment of Skeletal Health; Muscle in the Integrated Musculoskeletal System; Research Project.

Teaching and assessment

The taught element is online and may be taken remotely at home (live interactions will take place between 9–5pm UK time). This includes live lectures, wikis and blogs, and tutor support.

The research project involves hands-on laboratory work. It includes placements with all three universities.

You’ll also have the chance to take part in seminars, workshops and networking events delivered by industrial partners. You’ll be assessed through exams, coursework, a mock grant proposal and a research project dissertation.
