Course overview

Are you a teacher or educationalist who would like to develop your professional practice? This distance learning programme is an opportunity to continue your professional development and acquire advanced research and study skills whether you are in the UK or Overseas.

This distance learning programme is spread over two to three years, which allows you to combine it with flexible paid work and other commitments. We also offer the programme on-campus at our Sunderland campus as a full-time Education MA and part-time Education MA, all three modes of the programme have identical content. It is also possibel to opt for Stage 2 of the programme to be studied on-campus during one semester (October to January or March to June) in order to meet the requirements of some Ministries of Education that require that at least one-third of a programme is studying in a face-to-face mode.

There are four titles for the MA available, depending upon the modules chosen for study. The titles available are:
-MA Education (Generic), both on-campus and in distance learning mode
-MA Education (Advanced Professional Practice - Secondary), on-campus only
-MA Education (Advanced Professional Practice - Primary), on-campus only
-MA Education (Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion), on-campus only

The content of the distance learning programme can be tailored to your particular interests, with a range of modules available from our MA suite. Options include ‘Advanced Pedagogical Practice’, ‘Assessment Theory into Pedagogical Practice’, ‘Leading Organisational Effectiveness in Education’ and ‘The Nature of Teaching and Learning‘. You can also choose to undertake a negotiated individual study in education. For those who are returning to higher education, we provide plenty of support including classes to assist with academic writing.

The research element of the programme is excellent preparation if you decide to go on to a higher degree such as a PhD. The research element is supported by the University’s Centre for Pedagogy whose specialisms include teaching styles, motivation, human relationships in learning and comparative education. You will also receive training in rigorous research methodologies and undertake a Masters dissertation on a topic that reflects your personal interests.

If you would prefer not to write a dissertation and teach in an International School overseas, you may want to consider our distance learning International Education MA which replaces the dissertation with taught modules that are particularly relevant to international schools.

Higher salaries are available for those who develop their professionalism and achieve the status of Excellent Teacher or Advanced Skills Teacher. The salary for an Advanced Skills Teacher can be in the region of £57,000. For those who take on additional management responsibility, the salary for a head teacher can be over £100,000 a year.

In the final stage of the programme you will study topics such as ‘Leading and Managing in International Schools’ and ‘The International School Curriculum’. The Centre is based in state-of-the-art multimedia newsrooms equipped with the latest audio and video-editing technology, a radio studio and broadcast-quality television facilities. A dedicated postgraduate newsroom opened in September 2010. Newsroom computers offer a wide range of software for teaching and research support. Students have access to Press Association news wires, Sky News Radio and Reuters World Television News feeds. They use the Centre’s dedicated multimedia website, http://www.centreforjournalism.co.uk which offers live publishing facilities in text, audio and video. The site is a forum for debate about issues in journalism and the news industry involving students and practitioners in Britain and abroad.

Dynamic publishing culture
Staff regularly contribute to newspapers, magazines, journals and books. This is an academically challenging Master's qualification that teaches you the skills required to report for radio, television and the internet as well as newspapers and magazines. Students are taught by award-winning journalists in state-of-the-art newsrooms, and all have access to industry-leading equipment including Canon HD video cameras and Edirol audio recorders whenever they need them. They learn crucial newsgathering skills, as well as production skills which allow them to edit video and audio, design print pages and create complex interactive multimedia packages. They produce newspapers and magazines, news programmes for television and radio, and entire news web sites in our regular newsday exercises. The Master Program in Internet and Multimedia Engineering provides advanced education on signal, image, and video processing, networking and telematics, mobile and fixed communications systems, and applied electromagnetics.

We build high-level ICT professionals in Internet, Multimedia, and Telecommunication Engineering, with vision and knowledge on the current technology evolution, and ready to face the challenges of the Internet-of-Things, Big Data, Smart Systems and Machine Learning era.

Our program has a strong characterization toward Internet engineering on one side, and toward signal processing and multimedia systems, either networked or stand-alone, on the other side.
Students learn how to address the design, management, and operation of distributed communication and processing architectures and multimedia applications, in mobility and over heterogeneous networks, with diverse levels of smartness and interactivity.

The program has 2-year duration, includes 120 ECTS, and finishes with the defense of a master thesis. Classes start in the second half of September.

The profile of children's books has undergone an unparalleled change compared to other fields of literature. From its early days of didactic and moralistic undertones pre-18th century, to the present day where stories are not just written for pleasure but actively encourage children to question the ideologies that surround them, this genre's journey has been fascinating and, arguably, the most diverse. This module will begin with studying some of the early classics and end with children's stories in today's multimedia world. Through a range of theoretical perspectives such as feminism, marxism and post-modernism, this module will explore a range of texts including: classics, novels in verse, literature in translation, apps, traditional tales and comics.

- Investigating practice
(3 workshops and tutorial support in the Summer term)

You will develop an inquiry related to your own practice which can then be assessed through either a report or a portfolio of work. This might include the development of pedagogical approaches or curriculum materials, or investigations into the achievement levels or the opportunities provided for particular groups of learners. It could also include the development of professional practice through shadowing others or engaging in collaborative work across organisations.

The inquiry will be supported by a personal tutor. Group seminars and workshops will provide guidance on the development of methodological tools for the inquiry and enable you to share the stages of project development with other members of the group. You will be allocated a personal tutor for this assignment who will signpost you to relevant academic theory and research and support material.
