This course offers a hands-on curriculum that allows you to develop core journalistic skills in broadcast and digital media. You will learn the technical skills to master tv, audio and digital reporting. The course has a very practical focus, so you will develop your own story ideas and gather your own material through research and reporting for journalistic course work. You will be given full training in using our up-to-date media resources, ensuring that you graduate from the course as a multi-skilled journalist being competent in digital and broadcast journalism. While mainly being taught at our creative Harrow Campus, modules are also delivered at our Regent Street Campus in the heart of London allowing you the opportunity to report stories of this dynamic city in walking distance of the BBC or Buzzfeed.

The MA has been accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC) which means we provide industry backed journalism training for online, TV and radio. Our students regularly win BJTC awards, and the course has been awarded the BJTC award for excellence in teaching.

Our teaching staff are highly experienced journalism professionals, and our graduates go on to work with a variety of leading media organisations including BBC TV and Radio, BBC News Online, ITN, Russia Today, Al Jazeera, the Financial Times and The Guardian, Conde Nast, and many other media houses in Britain and around the world.

There is a strong emphasis on learning through 'hands-on' practice, in small class groups, using our professional studios and standard facilities. Most of your assessed course-work will be 'real' journalism assignments, a preparation for the world of contemporary journalism.

As well as regular classes taught by experienced journalists on our staff, we also invite other media professionals as guest speakers or to critique student work. We support you in applying for work placements, encourage you to go to journalism events and network with professionals, and to pursue other journalism experiences. 

You will have the chance to air your work on Smoke Radio, the University's multi-award-winning internet radio station, or post items onto the MA's own news site, Westminster World.

The course is taught over two semesters, and for the Masters students followed by the largely self-directed final project in the summer. Unlike many other journalism MAs, you can undertake an extensive practical Final Project. This could be a TV or radio documentary or a digital project. Students may undertake placements in the period from the Easter break to the end of the course to gather further work experience in a news or current affairs production company of usually three to four weeks. This MA can be taken as a part-time course (daytime) over two years studying two days a week after initial more intense orientation weeks.

This course provides a unique mix of multimedia and interaction design processes, design of 3D virtual reality and animation media, AV media and effects, and 3D media combined with real and virtual studio and on-location multimedia creation.

It not only focuses on the creative art and design aspects of digital media, but also on the theory and practice of the technical tools and techniques required for creating 3D, interactive real and virtual reality media through the development of design and technology knowledge, understanding and skills.

Aims

The MSc programme in Advanced Multimedia Design and 3D Technologies aims to develop a thorough knowledge of the design principles and techniques required for the design of combined real and virtual interactive and 3D multimedia, and an appreciation of the current research directions and opportunities that are available in this field of research.

Course Content

The course is delivered through a mix of lectures, workshops, self-study and individual and group project work. In lectures, key concepts and ideas are introduced, definitions are stated, results and techniques are explained, and immediate queries are discussed. Workshops and projects are used to foster practical engagement with the taught material.

The dissertation plays a key role in deepening understanding, in developing research and literature review skills, and in applying knowledge and skills gained in the programme to plan, execute, and evaluate a significant investigation into a current problem area related to the design of multimedia artefacts.

Teaching methods

The MA Multimedia Journalism at GCU includes all the key skills and knowledge you will need to begin a career in journalism.

Shorthand, Government, Law, and News & Online Writing are all compulsory subjects, with classes in these subjects and skills running every week for the entire length of the diploma programme.

In the first trimester, each week you will have practical classes in news reporting and feature writing; sub-editing & print production; and radio/TV/online journalism and production skills; as well as a weekly class studying and reflecting on Journalism in Context.

Then in second trimester the practical balance moves towards more demanding specialist reporting skills (court, council, financial, for example), and live multimedia newsday team productions, plus a specialist option.

The programme therefore is quite intense and the timetable busy, but nevertheless in each trimester almost one-third of the 39 hours in the week's timetable is left free, to enable you to do the reporting work off-campus and self-directed production practice your subjects will require you to put in.

Assessment methods

Each module is assessed separately: such as continuous coursework; exams or tests (Shorthand, and News days -which are in effect a group exam lasting a whole day); and some by a combination of coursework and NCTJ examinations (Law, Government).

All practical journalism assignments each week will be marked to appropriate professional standards of accuracy in fact and use of English. While the briefs you are given for your practical assignments are specific, your chosen story or subject can be up to you much of the time.

Shorthand is assessed by three attempts each semester at the relevant speed, with your single best performance being taken. You must achieve an absolute minimum of 60 words per minute (wpm), and we encourage you to go on to achieve 80, 90 and 100 wpm:100wpm is the recommended minimum speed for working on a newspaper and preparing for the next professional qualification after your Masters, the NCTJ's Qualification in Journalism (NQJ).

Work placement

You are guided by a journalist lecturer advisor in seeking and obtaining not less than 10 days' work experience in a journalism organisation by the end of the diploma, and not less than a further ten days by the end of the Masters.

Mostly this will be undertaken during vacation and assessment weeks, but there are possibilities of individual day shifts and up to one week only during teaching weeks, by negotiation with the programme leader.

Agreements are in place for placements with all major news and journalism organisations in Scotland, across TV , radio, newspapers, magazines and online.

Industry-standard facilities

You will have access to modern digital equipment in industry-standard facilities including our new, purpose-built multimedia newsroom to produce television and radio news packages, HD TV studio, and two digital radio presentation studios.

Your career

Our alumni have gone on to roles with a variety of media organisations, including the BBC, STV, Sky and Sky Sports, France 24, the Herald & Times Group, Deadline News and many more. The Centre is based in state-of-the-art multimedia newsrooms equipped with the latest audio and video-editing technology, a radio studio and broadcast-quality television facilities. A dedicated postgraduate newsroom opened in September 2010. Newsroom computers offer a wide range of software for teaching and research support. Students have access to Press Association news wires, Sky News Radio and Reuters World Television News feeds. They use the Centre’s dedicated multimedia website, http://www.centreforjournalism.co.uk which offers live publishing facilities in text, audio and video. The site is a forum for debate about issues in journalism and the news industry involving students and practitioners in Britain and abroad.

Year one

PR in a Multimedia World (30 credits) 

This unit covers how the theory and practice of PR changes as communication moves across paid, owned, shared and earned media. Paradigm shifts from traditional PR approaches are considered in the context of actual PR campaigns currently running.

Multimedia Campaign Planning (30 credits) 

Students get the opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.

Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits)

This unit introduces students to the measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement).

Research Methods (15 credits) 

This unit raises the students’ research skills to master’s level and includes SPSS software and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest. This is a shared unit.

Professional Practice (30 credits)

This unit positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a personal practice programme. This forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project and informs the student’s choice of dissertation topic.

Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits)

The culmination of this MA programme. Theory and practice learned in the previous units inform a final research project.

We have a fully equipped IT centre with both PC and Mac computers. These feature industry-standard image manipulation, video and audio editing software. Access to camera equipment and professional recording devices for podcast and video creation is highly likely, and access to photographic equipment is always available.

The Master degree in "ICT for Internet and Multimedia," offered by the University of Padova, captures the evolution of professional engineering figures, and represents a modern teaching offer that combines both solid fundamental knowledge and advanced technological competences. For this reason, the program contains both strong theoretical courses and applied research-oriented teaching towards advanced technologies for the future society. The graduate in "ICT for Internet and Multimedia" is able to master complex systems, manage data, plan strategies, and perform innovative activities in the broad area of ICT, with specific focus on communication networks and signal processing, but also an underlying awareness of the physical reality that enables such systems to operate and communicate.

Several professional figures can be formed by this program, including, but not limited to, transmission and communication specialists, ICT security consultants, multimedia communication engineers, experts of cyber systems, photonics scientists, and professional figures able to use technology for improving life and health.

Other relevant features of this program include a strong cross-disciplinary networking, similar to how the Internet brings together different subsystems; a genuine vocation toward internationalism and diversity, joining different cultures in the same spirit of multimedia communication; and finally, internships and practical experiences on the field with a tight-knit industrial collaboration, to make the ICT society a reality.

This degree provides a multidisciplinary education path in the field of information engineering, with an innovative fluid teaching model. This gives the students the ability to mould their expertise towards several specific applied disciplines, while still receiving a solid general-purpose engineering culture.

  • Telecommunications - the classical telecommunication course covering transmission, networks, signal and image processing, electromagnetism and transmission devices 
  • Cybersystems – an interdisciplinary curriculum oriented to networks and big data

For your Final Project, you research, analyse and implement a promotional multimedia campaign for a real-life business client or undertake a self-conceived piece of independent research and produce an extended essay under the guidance of a nominated supervisor.

The Program in a Nutshell

The Master Program in Internet and Multimedia Engineering provides advanced education on signal, image, and video processing, networking and telematics, cybersecurity, mobile and fixed communications systems, and applied electromagnetics.

We build high-level ICT professionals in Internet, Multimedia, and Telecommunication Engineering, with vision and knowledge on the current technology evolution, and ready to face the challenges of the Internet-of-Things, Big Data, Smart Systems and Machine Learning era.

Our program has a strong characterization toward Internet engineering on one side, and toward signal processing and multimedia systems, either networked or stand-alone, on the other side.

Students learn how to address the design, management, and operation of distributed communication and processing architectures and multimedia applications, in mobility and over heterogeneous networks, with diverse levels of smartness and interactivity.

The program has 2-year duration, includes 120 ECTS, and finishes with the defense of a master thesis. Classes start in the second half of September.

This course allows you to build your own portfolio of work focused particularly around the kinds of content you want to produce. It is primarily taught in Teesside's purpose built newsrooms, working in live journalism environments with industry professionals who have worked for global media companies. You are also offered focused advice around careers and skills in entrepreneurship to support you to turn your passion into a career.You produce media products for multimedia platforms involving the internet, newspapers, audio and video, and explore the changing nature of the media landscape in the 21st century.

What you study

You learn news values, news story construction, news writing, and how to make audio and video for websites. You compile a substantial portfolio of published work, working closely with our partner organisation, the Evening Gazette (part of the Trinity Mirror Group). You also undertake a major journalism project in a subject area of your choice.

This is an academically challenging Master's qualification that teaches you the skills required to report for radio, television and the internet as well as newspapers and magazines. Students are taught by award-winning journalists in state-of-the-art newsrooms, and all have access to industry-leading equipment including Canon HD video cameras and Edirol audio recorders whenever they need them. They learn crucial newsgathering skills, as well as production skills which allow them to edit video and audio, design print pages and create complex interactive multimedia packages. They produce newspapers and magazines, news programmes for television and radio, and entire news web sites in our regular newsday exercises. All of this is backed up by the rigorous academic disciplines of law, politics, history that all good journalists need.

- Format and assessment -

Compulsory modules in Reporting and Writing, Media Law and Ethics, and Principles and Practice of Convergent Journalism introduce you to the professional challenges of modern reporting and prepare you to pass the National Council for the Training of Journalists’ Diploma in Journalism (this involves passing papers in shorthand, public affairs, law and reporting). You choose academic modules from a range including: History of Journalism; Communication and Humanitarianism; Political Reporting and Propaganda - Media, Manipulation and Persuasion.

Year one

Advertising in a World of Converging Communication (30 credits)

This unit covers contemporary advertising practice and theory combining traditional mass media approaches with emerging social media and mobile channels. This unit develops practical skills and a critical awareness of the issues and practices within advertising in a world where increasingly the target audience can skip ads and brands combine paid, owned, earned and shared media to engage consumers. After introducing advertising principles, the unit moves on to explore the digital mix, content marketing, native advertising and immersive, augmented experiences. The traditional advertising roles of art director, copywriter, account manager and media planner are still important industry pathways but are increasingly challenged by agile practice, this unit considers the implications. Assessments are designed to test application of your learning in both theory and practice. 

Multimedia Campaign Planning (30 credits)

Students get the practical opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.

Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits)

This unit introduces students to the challenge of measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement)

Research Methods (15 credits)

This unit raises the students’ research skills to Master’s level, including SPSS and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest (Shared Unit)

Professional Practice (30 credits)

This unit positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a PDP, which forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project- and informs the student’s choice of Major Project or dissertation

Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits)

The culmination of the MA degree, where the theory and practice learned in the previous units informs the student’s principal learning outcome- a campaign that demonstrates their professional attainment or a dissertation that critically examines a crucial industry issue, generating original thinking. Both project and dissertation require primary research to a master’s level.
