This course provides a unique mix of multimedia and interaction design processes, design of 3D virtual reality and animation media, AV media and effects, and 3D media combined with real and virtual studio and on-location multimedia creation.

It not only focuses on the creative art and design aspects of digital media, but also on the theory and practice of the technical tools and techniques required for creating 3D, interactive real and virtual reality media through the development of design and technology knowledge, understanding and skills.

Aims

The MSc programme in Advanced Multimedia Design and 3D Technologies aims to develop a thorough knowledge of the design principles and techniques required for the design of combined real and virtual interactive and 3D multimedia, and an appreciation of the current research directions and opportunities that are available in this field of research.

On this course you will:

Develop advanced knowledge and skills relevant to the design and creation of combined real, virtual interactive and 3D multimedia and tools, to assist in the creation of combined real and virtual interactive and 3D multimedia.

Course Content

The course is delivered through a mix of lectures, workshops, self-study and individual and group project work. In lectures, key concepts and ideas are introduced, definitions are stated, results and techniques are explained, and immediate queries are discussed. Workshops and projects are used to foster practical engagement with the taught material.

The dissertation plays a key role in deepening understanding, in developing research and literature review skills, and in applying knowledge and skills gained in the programme to plan, execute, and evaluate a significant investigation into a current problem area related to the design of multimedia artefacts.

The industry -

Modern PR practitioners have to grapple with communication that knows no boundaries. The stakeholder relations manager, the corporate journalist, the digital promoter, the brand content manager - these are the jobs of the future, and the graduates filling these posts will need to know how to do their public relations in an integrated way.

The corporate narrative now has to compete with the user generated content. Traditional news and feature journalism is being pushed aside by citizen journalism and brand journalism, causing PR practitioners to re-think their influencer strategies. Advertisers who were once focused on campaigns in print media are now using rich online content, while native advertising is blurring the lines between public relations and advertising. Those who can surf the waves of this multifaceted world will be the most effective (employable) strategic communicators.

The programme -

As the roles of digital newsroom manager, multimedia advertiser, marketing professional, and corporate PR continue to converge, it is increasingly important that students gain first-hand experience of these functions. With opportunities for networking, live client briefs and portfolio development all built into the course, graduates leave Southampton Solent with a wealth of industry relevant experience to show potential employers.

The ‘Professional Development’ unit gives students work-placement and freelance opportunities, enhancing their professional skillset. Students will also be able to pitch for paid work at Solent Creatives, who specialise in connecting students with businesses who need creative support. Learners are encouraged to carry out additional work experience alongside their regular studies. The course team’s close links with industry have helped past students to negotiate placements at top local and national agencies.

As one of the country’s top creative universities (Which? University Student Survey, 2014), Southampton Solent is proud to offer students a range of high-end media facilities. Students also have the opportunity to access an extensive media loans service, where they can borrow high-end video production and photography equipment.

The course concludes with a major project or dissertation. This is another opportunity for students to specialise their knowledge, conducting in-depth research into an area that complements their unique career ambitions.

Course Content

Units include:

- PR in a Multimedia World (30 credits) - this unit covers how the theory and practice of PR changes as communication moves across paid, owned, shared and earned media. Paradigm shifts from traditional PR approaches are considered in the context of actual PR campaigns currently running.
- Multimedia Campaign Planning (30 credits) - students get the opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.
- Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits) - this unit introduces students to the measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement).
- Research Methods (15 credits) - this unit raises the students’ research skills to master’s level and includes SPSS software and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest. This is a shared unit.
- Professional Development (30 credits) - this unit positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a personal development programme. This forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project and informs the student’s choice of dissertation topic.
- Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits) - the culmination of this MA programme. Theory and practice learned in the previous units inform a final research project.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

Work experience:

One unit (Professional Practice) requires a work placement or freelance project to be completed. Students are encouraged to source their own client (through Solent Creatives) or to find a work placement that is appropriate to their career ambitions. The course team will be available to provide support and guidance as necessary.

The placements and projects vary in length, depending on client needs. The minimum required is a two week placement, but on average the client projects last much longer.

Assessment:

Assessment methods include essays, practical portfolios, reflective reports, and campaign outputs. The major project/dissertation unit includes a presentation during the early stages of development. ‘PR in a Multimedia World’ includes an exam.

Our facilities -

We have a fully equipped IT centre with both PC and Mac computers. These feature industry-standard image manipulation, video and audio editing software. Access to camera equipment and professional recording devices for podcast and video creation is highly likely, and access to photographic equipment is always available.

Web-based learning -

Solent’s virtual learning environment (VLE) provides quick online access to assignments, lecture notes, suggested reading and other course information. The unit materials are posted on the VLE and students are expected to have reviewed them prior to attending class. The materials include journal articles, videos and web-based resources.

Graduates will be in a good position to pursue further professional qualifications. Chartered Institute of Public Relations diplomas are available in areas of expertise such as crisis management and internal communication. Membership of the CIPR encourages continued professional development (CPD).

MPhil/PhD options are open to those wishing to pursue academic research and teaching.

Other costs -

Students may travel to central London for an agency visit. This has taken place three times over the past six years. Coach tickets can be found for less than £20, and all day tube passes cost around £10.

Graduation costs -

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2015, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £42 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

The Centre is based in state-of-the-art multimedia newsrooms equipped with the latest audio and video-editing technology, a radio studio and broadcast-quality television facilities. Students have access to Press Association news wires, Sky News Radio and Reuters World Television News feeds. They use the Centre’s dedicated multimedia website, http://www.centreforjournalism.co.uk which offers live publishing facilities in text, audio and video. The site is a forum for debate about issues in journalism and the news industry involving students and practitioners in Britain and abroad.

The MA Multimedia Journalism at GCU includes all the key skills and knowledge you will need to begin a career in journalism.

Shorthand, Government, Law, and News & Online Writing are all compulsory subjects, with classes in these subjects and skills running every week for the entire length of the diploma programme.

In the first trimester, each week you will have practical classes in news reporting and feature writing; sub-editing & print production; and radio/TV/online journalism and production skills; as well as a weekly class studying and reflecting on Journalism in Context.

Then in second trimester the practical balance moves towards more demanding specialist reporting skills (court, council, financial, for example), and live multimedia newsday team productions, plus a specialist option.

The programme therefore is quite intense and the timetable busy, but nevertheless in each trimester almost one-third of the 39 hours in the week's timetable is left free, to enable you to do the reporting work off-campus and self-directed production practice your subjects will require you to put in.

Work Placement

You are guided by a journalist lecturer advisor in seeking and obtaining not less than 10 days’ work experience in a journalism organisation by the end of the diploma, and not less than a further ten days by the end of the Masters.

Mostly this will be undertaken during vacation and assessment weeks, but there are possibilities of individual day shifts and up to one week only during teaching weeks, by negotiation with the programme leader.

Agreements are in place for placements with all major news and journalism organisations in Scotland, across TV , radio, newspapers, magazines and online.

The Master Program in Internet and Multimedia Engineering provides advanced education on signal, image, and video processing, networking and telematics, mobile and fixed communications systems, and applied electromagnetics.

We build high-level ICT professionals in Internet, Multimedia, and Telecommunication Engineering, with vision and knowledge on the current technology evolution, and ready to face the challenges of the Internet-of-Things, Big Data, Smart Systems and Machine Learning era.

Our program has a strong characterization toward Internet engineering on one side, and toward signal processing and multimedia systems, either networked or stand-alone, on the other side.
Students learn how to address the design, management, and operation of distributed communication and processing architectures and multimedia applications, in mobility and over heterogeneous networks, with diverse levels of smartness and interactivity.

The program has 2-year duration, includes 120 ECTS, and finishes with the defense of a master thesis. Classes start in the second half of September.

Course details

The course offers graduates from a broad range of undergraduate disciplines the opportunity to learn how to communicate their own interests, using the latest digital storytelling techniques in video, audio and infographics, alongside print-based magazine writing.

This course allows you to build your own portfolio of work focused particularly around the kinds of content you want to produce. It is primarily taught in Teesside's purpose built newsrooms, working in live journalism environments with industry professionals who have worked for global media companies. You are also offered focused advice around careers and skills in entrepreneurship to support you to turn your passion into a career.

You produce media products for multimedia platforms involving the internet, newspapers, audio and video, and explore the changing nature of the media landscape in the 21st century.

What you study

You learn news values, news story construction, news writing, and how to make audio and video for websites. You compile a substantial portfolio of published work, working closely with our partner organisation, the Evening Gazette (part of the Trinity Mirror Group). You also undertake a major journalism project in a subject area of your choice.

The first stage comprises four 20-credit modules and one 40-credit module, and in the second you complete a final 60-credit dissertation.

Teaching

As a vocational degree, there is a great deal of emphasis on practical work-related learning. More traditional lectures and seminars are also employed, particularly around those subjects requiring a detailed, factual knowledge base. We see it as an essential component of the degree that you engage in reflective practice which informs your future personal development. You are expected to read around the subject and research and produce media products - such as stories, video and audio - in your own time.

In taught sessions you experience a range of learning and teaching strategies to help you form both a theoretical and practical understanding of the field of journalism. Your understanding of the subject is developed through workshops, seminars, group work and by producing content for the Tside website (http://www.tside.co.uk).

A range of assessment methods is used, ranging from practical production tasks to traditional essay assignments. You can either undertake a self-conceived piece of independent research and produce an extended essay under the guidance of a nominated supervisor. Or for your Final Project you produce a multimedia news website, to be developed within negotiable parameters, incorporating audio, video, animation and still images as appropriate. This is supported by an extended, critical essay exploring a key issue of professional practice raised in the production of the website.

This is an academically challenging Master's qualification that teaches you the skills required to report for radio, television and the internet as well as newspapers and magazines. Students are taught by award-winning journalists in state-of-the-art newsrooms, and all have access to industry-leading equipment including Canon HD video cameras and Edirol audio recorders whenever they need them. They learn crucial newsgathering skills, as well as production skills which allow them to edit video and audio, design print pages and create complex interactive multimedia packages. They produce newspapers and magazines, news programmes for television and radio, and entire news web sites in our regular newsday exercises. The content of the course is divided into three sections. The way we teach and deliver this course is continually informed by best practice across the industry.

You will undertake three intensive taught modules in professional practice in the third semester instead of a traditional research dissertation. These modules will be taught by specialist tutors from the industrial sector with strong backgrounds in journalism on print, broadcast and digital platforms.

The three compulsory modules in semester three are: Advanced Reporting Skills, Online Journalism, and Broadcast and Video Journalism. As part of the broadcast module, you will prepare a video news package and you will spend a day working in modern TV studios, presenting your news packages in the form of an evening television magazine programme.
