This modular programme aims to provide an academic underpinning in preparation for podiatric surgery and/or advanced practice and conceptualises the podiatrist as a critical, problem solving, reflective clinical practitioner who is able to act autonomously in planning and implementing professional tasks.

The programme utilises a wide variety of contemporary learning and teaching approaches which challenges the students to work independently as well as fostering an appreciation of the value of a team approach to care. These key generic skills are developed and utilised to promote the highest quality of practice and enable the students to use the best available evidence as well as widening their scope of practice.

The programme aims to produce a practitioner who is able to gather systematically, appraise, make sound judgements in the absence of complete data, utilise the best available evidence for practice and disseminate this information to other colleagues and the broader healthcare community.

Professional Accreditation

This programme is approved by the College of Podiatry, London.

CPD Option

Individual modules are available to health and social care professions with an interest in the area. Most modules are available via Online study.

Employment Opportunities

Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) confers eligibility to apply for practical pupillage under the mentorship of a podiatric surgeon. Also a role as an extended scope practitioner in an MSK practice setting.

Many of our graduates have found that this academic qualification and the graduate skills acquired during the programme have enhanced their employability and career progression in surgery and MSK practice within the UK and abroad.

There is a strong emphasis on development of technical skills necessary for SEM practice e.g. Advanced anatomy and MSK knowledge, and practical training within appropriate environments. This course will provide experienced practitioner training and access to local MSK clinics.

Sports and Exercise Medicine is now a recognised training route by the GMC for clinicians. SEM is a key deliverable in new government strategies, demand for training has increased with portfolio GPs and GPwSI specifically interested in training for Sports Medicine, and an increasing expectation amongst professional sports clubs that team doctors should have undergone structured training programmes to Masters Level.

This masters is a three year part-time course to begin with and in 2018 will be available full-time. The course attendance is approximately one day a month with focus on the following modules:

• Functional sports anatomy and clinical assessment
• Musculoskeletal medicine and sports injuries
• The sport and exercise medicine practitioner
• Exercise physiology, health and sports nutrition
• Physical activity, health and exercise prescription
• Project work and dissertation

This innovative course will provide podiatrists with a theoretical underpinning of podiatric surgery and the opportunity to specialise in surgery.

Podiatric surgery has developed rapidly over the last 15 years as a post-registration professional development, and provides the podiatrist working within the NHS or in private practice with the opportunity to extend their scope of practice to include surgical management of foot and ankle pathologies. This course provides the podiatrist with the theoretical underpinning required to pursue this career route. The modular course is a collaborative initiative offered in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University.

Teaching, learning and assessment

A range of student-centred learning methods including tutorials, seminars and experimental laboratory classes are utilised. Your performance will be assessed by a variety of methods including course work and examination. Class sizes are normally around 10-15.

Teaching hours and attendance

This course is delivered by attendance and by online learning. You will generally be required to attend QMU/ Glasgow Caledonian University a few days a week to participate in classes. Links with industry/professional bodies

The course is approved by the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians, Glasgow, The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists (SOCAP). On completion of the MSc you will be eligible to apply for a surgical training post. Surgical training posts are not part of the academic programme of study and are not arranged by either university.

You can further your professional development by taking a PGC in skeletal reporting, CT head reporting, all aspects of Ultrasound, or Mammography. Alternatively you could take a single module in a specific area, including Barium swallow and VF, CTC, cardiac stress testing or HSG - please enquire for other areas. Qualified sonographers can develop niche areas of practice such as vascular and breast imaging. If you want to develop ultrasound competencies in MSK, abdominal, obstetrics and gynaecology scanning then you should follow the MSc in Ultrasound Imaging route.

We have a wide range of options for breast imaging including mammography (equivalent to the College of Radiographers' postgraduate certificate in principles and practice of mammography); mammogram image interpretation; MRI breast reproting; interventional procedures; and breast ultrasound. Pick and choose your preferred options and modules to build a bespoke Masters qualification focused around breast imaging.

Key benefits:

• Our ultrasound modules are fully accredited by the Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE)
• Experienced, enthusiastic and friendly staff committed to supporting you through your study
• Access to our excellent onsite clinical facilities, including ultrasound machines, digital imaging suite and a 16 slice CT scanner.
