Pharmaceutical Science will appeal to those of you who want to understand how the human body functions at a molecular level and the science that we can use to manage human health.

Based in our state-of-the-art Science Centre, you will explore the biochemical and cellular make-up of the human body, investigate what happens when things go wrong through, for example disease or illness, and how these may be prevented or cured by the action of drugs.

Alongside this, you will build a clear understanding of drugs and medicines, their structures, discovery and development, their biological delivery and activity, and their testing, regulation, production and quality assurance by analytical methods.

The MSci course combines Bachelors-level and Masters-level study in one integrated programme, giving you the opportunity to undertake professional work experience or an extended research project. However, whichever degree you choose to complete, you’ll develop wide ranging specialist skills and an in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical science and its industry.

Course content

In Year 1, you’ll be introduced to the theoretical principles and practical techniques of pharmaceutical science and pharmacology. You’ll study the underpinning biology and chemistry and learn about the activity of drugs on the human body.

During Year 2, you’ll look more thoroughly at the analysis and quality assurance of drugs using a range of laboratory techniques and QA methodologies. Your understanding of the human body will extend to the molecular and cellular levels, giving you the depth of knowledge to understand the functions of a healthy body and when disease and illness strike.

Between years 2 and 3 you will take the sandwich placement year. By doing this, you’ll complete a one-year placement with a company within the pharmaceutical industry specifically or a wider scientific field. You might work in drug discovery, isolating and characterising new potential drugs, undertake laboratory or clinical trials, or be involved in full scale industrial drug production that will further develop your employability skills. You will be supported by an onsite placement supervisor and receive regular visits and support from your academic supervisor too.

In Year 3, your final year, you’ll follow the complete process – from the stages involved in identifying potential new drugs, synthesising them for laboratory and then clinical trials, and subsequently, how their approval and production for commercial markets. You will also undertake independent research in an area of your choice, designing your research to probe a current issue in pharmaceutical science.

As an MSci student, your fourth year will provide the opportunity to gain an even greater breadth and depth of specialist knowledge. You’ll also hone your professional skills by completing a work placement or research assistantship, where there may be the opportunity to work closely with a leading employer.

Graduates can progress into a wide range of roles either within the pharmaceutical industry specifically or a wider scientific field. You might work in drug discovery, isolating and characterising new potential drugs, undertake laboratory or clinical trials, or be involved in full scale industrial drug production. Graduates with an in-depth scientific knowledge are also highly sought after to work in marketing, sales and business management in this and other scientific industries.

Our courses aim to provide you with the relevant knowledge, approach and skill set demanded of a practicing scientist. You will develop skills and knowledge to study a variety of topics relevant to your degree, and the acquisition of Graduate skills and attributes developed in core modules will allow you to find employment in a variety of laboratory based environments such as the biopharmaceutical industry, food processing and quality assurance, veterinary and agricultural laboratories.

Some graduates apply for Graduate Entry Programmes in various healthcare professions such as Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy and Nursing. A significant number of our graduates apply for postgraduate study. Those who aspire to a career in teaching progress to a PGCE, whereas graduates with an interest in a research choose to continue onto Masters and PhD programmes.

Graduates from science courses are increasingly sought after due to their skills in numeracy, IT, problem solving and abilities to analyse and evaluate. Consequently, many of the non-laboratory based industries such as regulatory affairs, scientific editing, technical sales and marketing, insurance and management preferentially employ graduate scientists. All students carry out a work placement in year 2. These are flexible so you can angle your experience towards your career aspirations. Degree information

Students develop insights into the techniques used in current projects, and gain in-depth experience of a particular specialised research area, through project work as a member of a research team. The programme provides the professional skills necessary to play a meaningful role in industrial or academic life.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of a choice of three core modules (45 credits), three optional modules (45 credits), a research essay (30 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits). Dissertation/report
All students submit a critical research essay and MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a substantial dissertation and oral presentation.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical, laboratory and computer-based classes. Student performance is assessed through coursework and written examination. The research project is assessed by literature survey, oral presentation and the dissertation.

Format

Students experience a number of areas of astrophysics from a choice of options taken to an advanced level, at which current research can be appreciated in some depth. Two thirds of the student's assessment is via examinations and one-third is via the research project.

For the lecture courses there are large-group example classes organised by the course lecturers. The projects are specific to each student. i.e. every student is doing something different from the other students. Project supervisors meet their students individually. Supervisions for the project are one-on-one with at least 8 hours contact time.

Students can attend any of the numerous seminars given in the IoA, DAMTP and Physics. However these are not formally part of the course work.

Assessment

- Supervised research project with thesis of not more than 8000 words.

- Candidates normally offer papers for 12 units or 4 lecture courses of 24 lectures each.

- Examined oral presentation for the project.

- One journal club per week

- A literature review is a component of every project.

The course allows students to continue a broad Materials Science education across a range of topics : the taught element consists of a series of approximately 16 modular lecture courses, covering a broad range of aspects of Materials Science, including Structural Materials, Device Materials, Materials Characterisation, Materials Chemistry and Biological & Pharmaceutical Materials. A research project is undertaken over 6 months, between October and March.

Students may choose which lecture modules they wish to attend, and must prepare a minimum of 10 courses for examination.

Students also undertake a substantial individual research project, chosen from a set of topics proposed by academic staff. Work on this project accounts for about a third of the final credit.

- Feedback
The MASt is treated as an undergraduate course for the purposes of supervisions, such that on average students should expect to have at least one supervision per week during term, with written and verbal feedback on their work within 24 hours.

Online written reports are provided at the end of each term.

Students should expect to meet daily to weekly with their project demonstrator and weekly to termly with their project supervisor.

Students receive written feedback on all aspects of work submitted for summative assessment (reports, oral presentations, poster), within two weeks of the work being submitted.

Most things in the real world are complex and difficult to understand, from biological systems to the financial markets to industrial processes, but explaining them is essential to making progress in the modern world. Mathematical modelling is a fundamental tool in the challenge to understand many of these systems, and is an essential part of contemporary applied mathematics. By developing, analysing and interpreting mathematical and computational models we gain insight into these complex processes, as well as giving a framework in which to interpret experimental data.

To fully capitalise on these tools, there is a fundamental need in both academic research and industry for a new generation of scientists trained to work at the interdisciplinary frontiers of mathematics and computation. These scientists require the ability to assimilate and understand information from other disciplines, communicate with and enthuse other researchers, as well as having the advanced mathematical and computational skills needed.

MSc Mathematical Modelling is a one year master’s level course at the interfaces of Mathematics, Computer Science, Systems Biology and Chemical Engineering. Interdisciplinary mathematical modelling in the School of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham takes place in a thriving outward-facing community with specialities including mathematical biology, fluid mechanics, mathematical finance and industrial modelling. The School collaborates widely with multiple disciplines, including Biological and Medical Sciences, Chemical Engineering and within industry. In particular, Birmingham is an emerging centre for multidisciplinary Biological Systems Science research, and is in a unique position, being adjacent to one of the largest super-hospitals in Europe, catering for a highly diverse population.

The programme is specifically tailored to develop students from a strong mathematics background into becoming genuinely multidisciplinary scientists. The School of Mathematics is one of seven schools in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The school is situated in the Watson Building on the main Edgbaston campus of the University of Birmingham. This MSc examines the physical processes governing the behaviour of volcanoes. The programme is taught by leading scientists who are working at the cutting edge of research into volcanoes, and will provide you with a strong background for independent research to PhD level or for a career in industry, the public sector or an NGO.

The programme is designed to equip you with knowledge of the physical processes of volcanoes, including both sub-surface and surficial behaviour, insights into important historical eruptions, understanding of risk and risk mitigation, and instruction and experiential learning on data gathering, handling analysis and presentation to publishable standard.

You will develop a wide range of skills, such as quantitative and computational skills, including the use of statistical and data handling software; proficiency in critical analysis of scientific material from a variety of sources, including primary research documents and original data; and the ability to synthesise concise and informative material produced for a variety of audiences.

Careers

The MSc in Volcanology prepares students for research-based careers. Most students then continue on one of three paths, using the skills they have acquired at Bristol. About 40 per cent of graduating students continue on to study for a PhD at a range of institutions in the UK, Europe, North America, Australia and Singapore. Most overseas students return to their home country to work for government agencies in hazard management.

Other graduates choose to work in the commercial sector for either geotechnical companies (who manage assets for large multinationals) or risk management and reinsurance companies, typically in London where we have a burgeoning presence within that community.

The volcanology programme is rigorous and quantitative, and prepares students for settings where both domain-specific knowledge and the ability to conduct independent research are highly valued.
