This programme is designed for experienced practitioners who wish to advance their clinical practice, develop their professional career and enhance their knowledge of research and evidence-based healthcare in community nursing. This pathway aims to bring an advanced nurse practitioner level of practice to district nursing to meet, and to encourage, evolving service delivery models with a strong emphasis on clinical leadership.

Components of leadership relevant to advanced practice in district nursing include the use of robust evaluation methodology so that practice is prescribed, delivered and audited, based on understanding of the search for, and use of, valid data. Leadership within district nursing also require the skills to manage and develop staff, and to work effectively with other agencies. The programme, mapped against the RCN competences for advanced nursing practice also provides practitioners with the opportunity to qualify as independent prescribers.

You will be required to undertake a substantial written project, drawing on learning and skills acquired in the taught components of your PGDip programme. Three project options are available: an analysis of an area of healthcare provision, an empirical study, or a systematic review.

You will be supported in your project work through guidance from a designated supervisor. Additionally, once enrolled, you will have access to group online tutorials via discussion boards situated within an e-Learning site. The online discussion boards provide a medium where queries can be addressed and suggestions offered by both fellow students and the module leader.

The programme builds on a practitioner's existing skills and experience to enable them to lead and support the development and subsequent delivery of evidence-based practice. Students study core modules in evidence-based decision making and healthcare research, together with clinical leadership and assessment modules taken as compulsory. The Medical Humanities constitute a growing field of scholarship productive of powerful, innovative analyses of health care issues today. The chief educational aims of this course are to explore the foundations of the field and teach analytical and critical skills that enable students to address questions such as:

Does studying the humanities make us more humane? How are the humanities different from the sciences? What new angles do they offer on old ethical dilemmas? What is health? What is illness? What kind of evidence about illness does literature provide? What is narrative and how embedded are narrative ways of thought in health care practice?

Students who take this course will come away from it with a strong sense of how a variety of humanities disciplines conceive of health and illness and of the contributions these can make to health care. The disciplines involved include Philosophy, Literature, Film, Psychiatry, Art History and Nursing.

The MSc in Medical Humanities incorporates the previous King's MA Literature and Medicine programmes. Our Clinical Neuroscience course enables trainees in neurology, psychiatry and related health-care disciplines to study the anatomical, physiological and pathological basis of symptoms and signs of brain disorders. Taught by qualified social workers with a range of practice specialisms and research interests, this course offers exciting opportunities to learn alongside students from related professional disciplines including occupational therapy, teaching, nursing and medicine, mirroring the interprofessional nature of social work practice.

Users of social work services, carers and experienced practitioners are also actively involved in the course and the delivery of teaching sessions.

This course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council, as the regulatory body for social workers and other health professionals. You will address the HCPC Standards of Proficiency for Social Workers throughout the course, alongside the College of Social Work's Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF).

Course structure

In line with the guidance of the College of Social Work, students undertake 200 days of practical learning across the course. This involves 30 days of developing practice skills within the university, a 70-day placement in year 1 and a 100-day placement in year 2.

Learning in practice is supported by periods of study at the university, directed study (with a range of learning materials) and small-group practice tutorials. The course reflects the interprofessional nature of social work, with opportunities for shared learning experiences with education, nursing, medical and occupational therapy students.

Areas of study

Year 1 introduces core skills, theories and approaches for social work practice in its interprofessional context and fosters a critical understanding of key law, policy and human growth across the lifespan.

Year 2 focuses on more complex and accountable practice together with the development of more specialised skills and knowledge. There is also a focus on research in social work and the critical use of evidence to underpin own practice.

However, long-term recovery is dependent on the timely delivery of effective treatment. Affective disorders are also known as mood disorders and the main types include depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety disorder.

​This programme focuses on the application of the key principles of multidisciplinary public health practice to the breadth of 21st Century public health challenges. Our aim is to develop reflective public health practitioners capable of designing, implementing and evaluating community-focussed public health interventions – in Wales, the UK and internationally.

In this programme we will challenge your preconceptions and practice, developing your knowledge, skills and competences, helping you develop as a reflective public health practitioner. We place a strong emphasis on your own area of practice, and encourage you to base your studies on the issues and situations you face in your own field.

The programme has been designed to meet the needs of a wide range of public health practitioners, professionals, community workers and volunteers working to achieve improvements in the wider determinants of health. Our objective is to support you in further developing your public health knowledge and skills in order to improve your current and future practice, and enhance your career options.

The course is designed as a Masters programme but it has exit points at both postgraduate certificate & diploma level. Reflective practice is integrated into the programme: we’ll encourage you to reflect upon your learning as you progress, culminating in an assessed reflective statement demonstrating the integration and development of your learning and practice through the course of your studies. The dissertation also incorporates a reflective practice element. The programme is available on a part-time and full-time basis; you can also apply to study individual modules on a CPD basis.

For the Postgraduate Certificate, you’ll complete the following modules:
- Assessing Health, Wellbeing & Inequity (20 cred​its): Assess, evaluate and communicate information about the health and wellbeing of populations & communities

- Health Risk Perception & Communication (10 credits): Appraise the sociocultural, emotional and psychological factors that influence responses to threats to population health and wellbeing

- Public Health Policy Development (10 credits): Evaluate the political, social and economic framework within which policies influencing health & wellbeing are developed

- Applied Research Methods and Design (20 credits): Develop the qualitative and quantitative research skills necessary to undertake research and evaluate interventions and day-to-day practice.

For the Postgraduate Diploma, you’ll undertake the above modules, plus the following modules:
- Frameworks for Public Health Intervention (30 credits): Explore approaches to intervention for the protection and improvement of health and wellbeing, and integrate learning from across the programme in the development a coherent multidisciplinary intervention on an identified public health issue.

- Health Protection (20 credits): Assess, prevent and manage risks to health arising from the general environment, communicable disease and environmental health hazards.

- Reflective Public Health Practice (10 credits): Reflect on your learning, practice and experiences in order to evidence the development of your professional public health practice.

To obtain the MSc, you will also complete a Dissertation (60 credits): Design, plan and undertake a piece of independent applied research, and present the findings.

Learning & Teaching​

- ​Course Delivery
Attendance for taught modules is usually one evening per week (part time) or two evenings per week (full time). SHS7000 Applied Research Methods & Design is currently delivered as a blended learning module over four contact days, two days in the autumn term (October) and two further days in the spring term (February), supported by e-learning materials and activities. The APH7008 Health Protection module follows a similar approach, being taught via three 2-day short courses spread through the academic year (November, February, April), plus an assessment day in May.
During your dissertation studies, you will attend research project workshops and be allocated individual supervision time. These usually begin in March (of the 2nd year of study for part-time students).

- Learning & Teaching Activities
The teaching and learning strategy for the programme places a strong emphasis on application of theoretical frameworks to real problems and situations, and allows for substantial student input and discussion. During the programme you will engage with a variety of learning & teaching activities, including:

- Lectures
Lectures will be used to provide you with a framework of ideas and theory, into which you can fit material obtained from independent study and tutorials. Whilst lectures are seen as opportunities for imparting key information they are also intended to be interactive, and debate is encouraged.

- Seminars
These will provide you with the opportunity to discuss problems related to specific subjects. Group seminars will enable you to share experiences and discuss, analyse and evaluate possible solutions.

- Workshops
Tasks will be set requiring you to work together to develop problem solving strategies and to analyse issues.

- Student Symposia
Learning activities led by students will form part of the programme. You will be required to develop and present short papers and facilitate discussion relating to specific issues.

- Case Studies
These sessions will present a case for discussion based on previous events, and you’ll be expected to analyse the situation and suggest appropriate public health interventions in response. These studies will be aimed at improving your skills with respect to the analysis of problems and the synthesis and evaluation of solutions.
Preparation for such a case study may include the following:
- Presentation of available data and information about the case.
- Group discussions, tutorial and individual learning to enable you to identify the problem and synthesise possible solutions.
- Discussions and lectures with relevant professionals to understand the rationale behind the adoption of specific solutions.
- Debriefing by way of tutorials and seminars.

- Contact Time and Self-Directed Learning
The direct contact time between student and tutor varies from module to module. Generally, unless otherwise stated on the module guide, 10 credit modules will include up to 18 hours contact time and 20 credit modules will include up to 36 hours contact time. An exception to the above is APH7010 Frameworks for Public Health Intervention, which includes student-led group work supported by keynote lectures.

In addition to direct contact time you are generally expected to undertake a further 3-4 hours of self-directed learning for every 1 hour of contact time.

- Introduction to Academic Skills
Included within the introduction to the programme is an introduction to the academic skills needed to study at Masters level. This includes the provision of specific e-learning material, a formative assignment and access to a Personal Tutor.

- Moodle
You can access programme material both on and off campus via Moodle, the University’s virtual learning environment. This includes access to lecture presentations, recommended and required reading, group forums, e-portfolios and a range of other learning and teaching resources specific to the modules and programme.

- Personal Tutors & Professional Development
In addition to a general open door policy, we encourage you to meet with the Programme Director and tutors regularly throughout the programme to discuss feedback on assignments and the development of academic skills.
You’ll be an allocated a Personal Tutor at the beginning of the programme, who you can work with to develop your academic skills and consider how you can integrate your learning experiences with your own professional development needs and aspirations. Your aspirations for professional development will be discussed during the induction to the programme. Support and guidance will then be tailored throughout the programme to ensure that you are best able to fulfil your chosen professional development needs.

Assessment

To reflect the applied nature of study, the programme contains no unseen written examinations. Instead, teaching and assessment will focus on case studies, exercises & scenarios reflecting contemporary issues in public health practice, often located within your own professional experience and environment. Examples of assessment tasks include: reports, essays, briefings, oral presentations, group work, observed practice scenarios, online tests and posters.

Throughout the programme, the assessment tasks we set will encourage you to select specific topics of study that are relevant to your interests and practice. For example, in the Assessing Health, Wellbeing and Inequity module, you will be asked to assess and evaluate the health and wellbeing of a specified population (in general or focussed on a specific issue/range of issues). You’ll be free to select a population and issue of professional and/or personal interest to you.

Employability & Careers​

The promotion, protection and improvement of public health are key objectives for the Welsh Government, UK Government and at an international level, as exemplified by the WHO Commission on the Social Determinants of Health.

Our programme is closely mapped to Levels 6 & 7 of the Public Health Skills & Knowledge Framework - the recognised competence framework for public health at all levels in the UK. The programme provides the underpinning knowledge to enable you to pursue UK Public Health Practitioner registration (which requires completion of an assessed portfolio through a recognised development scheme, such as that operated by Public Health Wales – see http://www.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/888/page/49062 for details). We are also working on a project with Public Health Wales to develop and pilot a scheme to enable recognition of Advanced Practice (Public Health), supported by work-based learning.

Our Family Therapy course is designed for professionals working in a mental health setting, such as nurses, GPs, paediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and occupational therapists.

Our MSc-level course is designed for students with significant prior clinical experience. You will already have completed the first two years of Family Therapy training either at the IoPPN or an another Association for Family Therapy-accredited course.

Completion of this course will qualify you for registration with the UK Council for Psychotherapy as a family and systemic psychotherapist.

- Course format and assessment -

The course is delivered through lectures, small group seminars, skills development groups, case presentations and personal and professional development groups. This course includes a significant amount of live supervised clinical practice which enables students to develop their psychotherapy skills to a high level and with a range of clients. Students on the PT MSc will need to be working in a context that allows them to complete 100 clinical hours of family and couple therapy in each year of the course.

Study groups are small and there is a high level of personal attention. Lectures and discussions form the core teaching for each module. They cover the main topics and key themes in the curriculum of each module, and ideas are developed further in small group work, case analyses and student presentations. You are expected to supplement class work and lecture notes with further reading. Students find it helpful to do some preparatory reading each week.

Career prospects

Prepares students for registration with the UKCP as a systemic family therapist. Students go on to work within the NHS or similar settings. Successful graduates can apply for Family and Systemic Psychotherapy posts and work privately.

- Description

This multidisciplinary programme is designed for doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. The programme content is research and evidence-based, with the aim of developing students into excellent members of the interprofessional healthcare team. The programme will give students a detailed understanding of research methods and statistics applied to child health, the knowledge of how to conduct methodologically robust research projects. Working with established leaders will advance knowledge of the management processes in modern NHS Trusts.

Students have the option to choose to study for a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits), Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) or the MSc (180 credits). It is expected that students will take two years to complete the MSc programme.

- Course purpose

This programme is designed for all members of the multidisciplinary team working in Paediatrics, including experienced nurses at Band 6 and higher, Pharmacists and medical trainees who are post MRCPCH, or are experienced clinical fellows with middle grade experience but not full membership. Overseas applicants are encouraged to apply. This programme is suitable for aspiring clinical leaders and researchers in Paediatrics.

- Course format and assessment

Assessment is by essays, presentations, production of a business case and one unseen examination. For MSc students, the programme also requires completion of a research project that includes a thesis of 10 -15,000 words.

Career prospects

The programme has been running for more than five successful years and the completion rate for our students is over 95%. The National Postgraduate Taught Education Survey (PTES) results for this course are outstanding and amongst the best within the School of Medicine at KCL.

Our students have gone onto further research in funded PhD programmes and all of our students who have applied for National Grid training in a specialty have been successful and the feedback has been outstanding.

- Description -

The interface between the law and the mental health disciplines raises fundamental questions concerning our very human nature. Concepts such as autonomy, responsibility, decision making capacity and risk are central and have come under increasing scrutiny in the literature. While each discipline approaches the debate from its own perspective and understanding of the world, increasingly connections have been made and relationships recognised. At a theoretical level this has led to a growing and vibrant literature. At the level of practice the close interaction between law and psychiatry, which had been evident across the centuries, has become increasingly significant and sensitive. In the context of evolving societal attitudes to mental ill health and disability and the expanding influence of international human rights norms the role of the law is becoming both more complex and more contentious.

Building on the experience gained from working across our disciplinary boundaries we have developed a strongly interdisciplinary programme, designed to investigate the interface between mental health, law and ethics at a theoretical level and to engage directly with the dilemmas and experience of illness encountered in practice. The course will expand students’ understanding, both within and beyond their own disciplines, and will provide them with the skills necessary to analyse and critique current law, practice and policy in relation to mental health.

- Course purpose -

A joint programme between The Dickson Poon School of Law and Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. This integrated MSc is for anyone concerned with mental health who wishes to study the clinical, ethical and legal thinking behind current law, policy and clinical practice. It has been designed for health professionals, lawyers, policy makers, and all those with a relevant first degree who are keen to consider the difficult questions raised by mental ill health and society’s response. Students will be able to study alongside others from a wide range of academic and professional disciplines at the heart of London’s legal and psychiatric world.

- Course format and assessment -

Teaching is predominantly by seminar to encourage active student participation in critical enquiry. Case studies will be held as part of each taught core module.

Full-time students are required to complete the programme over one academic year. Some modules will be assessed by examinations held in January or May of that year, while others will be assessed by coursework. Dissertations are due by late August the same year.

Part-time students are required to complete the programme over two academic years, with dissertations due by late August of the second/final year of study.

Employers value interdisciplinary skills and graduates of MHEL will be able to use the degree for many different career opportunities. These include:

- Leadership roles in relevant policy-related areas including positions in mental health advocacy groups nationally and internationally, professional regulatory organisations and governmental departments in UK and overseas;
