The primary aim of the MSc in International Shipping and Finance (ISF) is to address the educational needs of the rapidly evolving, highly competitive and capital intensive shipping industry, by bridging the gap between academic theory and business practice.

The programme is designed to provide a unique educational experience that combines research-led, technically advanced teaching by world-renowned academic faculty and senior industry practitioners. The shipping industry itself is highly involved in shaping its structure and contributing to its delivery as well as the career development of its participants. Careers

Many of our financial engineering graduates are now working as Quants in large London banks and other financial institutions. Others have pursued PhDs and have successful academic careers. Financial instruments are becoming ever more sophisticated, so graduates that understand complex modelling techniques are always in great demand. The high quantitative content of this programme opens many doors to a wide range of careers. You could structure and develop new debt or equity solutions to meet clients funding and hedging needs, or you could become a proprietary trader in exotic derivatives, or a software specialist or a quantitative analyst supporting the traders.

There are excellent opportunities on the buy-side, with hedge funds and investment institutions, as well as in investment banking and in software analytics. Opportunities in quantitative research, or with a rating agency, are among the many other attractive alternatives. Outside of mainstream banking and investment, you might also consider firms involved in commodity and energy trading, or the treasury divisions of leading multinationals and management consultancies.

Careers

Despite the volatile nature of the financial markets, demand for well‐qualified recruits remains high. Students schooled in the field of behavioural finance are in demand as investment banks, asset managers and associated industries attempt to understand investment patterns and pricing bubbles that cannot be explained by conventional finance theories. Thus, they have been showing increasing attention to behaviourally driven investment philosophies over the last few years. We expect many of our graduates to enter the industry at either the ‘Analyst’ level or as ‘Associates’, who tend to have several years of relevant professional experience.

Our graduates leave us equipped with knowledge and transferable skills that are also prized by employers outside of the traditional banking and finance sectors. Many of our Alumni are currently enjoying successful careers with multinational companies, consulting firms, government agencies and regulatory organizations throughout the world.Graduates will also gain the knowledge and skills required to continue their studies at the doctoral level.

How can knowledge of trading global markets affect risk management and compliance? Will firms that have trading arms executing orders in global markets need specialist trader analytics to succeed in today's business world?

Alongside banks, a growing number of both financial firms (e.g. hedge funds) and non-financial firms (e.g. utilities) have trading arms which execute orders in the markets and deal on behalf of either the firm or outside clients. Therefore, knowledge of trading global markets is a prerequisite for your career in trading, risk management or compliance.

On this course, we prepare you for a successful career in finance and financial services by covering in-depth finance, statistical modelling and trading skills. Taught by industry experts, we offer a mix of classroom-based instruction, case study and practical trading exercise where you trade on real-time simulated global markets through the use of industry-strength proprietary trading software in our specialist trading lab.

You master areas including:
-Trading strategies
-Risk and money management
-Trader analytics
-Portfolio management and empirical methods in finance

You are given exposure to practical trading in a wide range of markets, including equities, FX, commodities and bonds.
