COURSE SUMMARY

Throughout this course you will study the discipline of Performance Analysis in Sport and gain an understanding of how this vastly growing sector interacts with a multitude of Sports Science disciplines.

As a student on this programme you will have access to industry standard Performance Analysis equipment and you will learn how this exciting discipline is used across sports to enhance performance (Performance Analysis Module). You will generate an understanding of how Performance Analysis can be utilised in relation to sports injuries and how this can be measured (Injury Prevention and Performance Measurement Module).

You will also have the opportunity to conduct some primary research that could lead to publications, which may inform future Performance Analysis practice (Research Project Module).

COURSE DETAILS

This is the only Performance Analysis master's degree in the North West of England. The online theoretical content will provide the basis for the ‘on campus’ sessions, in order to put your learning into practice and provide some context to the theories.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The MSc course is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis.

The full-time course runs over three academic semesters (October through to September the following year), whilst  giving you the chance to exit with the following awards:

  • Postgraduate Certificate: completion of one module
  • Postgraduate Diploma: completion of two modules
  • Masters: completion of two modules plus a dissertation

In order to achieve an award of MSc Performance Analysis in Sport you must successfully complete the modules Performance Analysis and Injury Prevention and Performance Measurement, along with producing a thesis for the dissertation module.

TEACHING

This course is available both part-time and full-time and is delivered via a blended learning approach, which includes:  

  • Workshops (three days per module, per semester). These are interactive, discursive, reflective, participatory, collaborative and practice related sessions that employ a variety of teaching and learning methods. As the course progresses these will become progressively more student led, with you presenting case studies for peer and tutor review.  
  • Individual scholarly activity.
  • Self directed learning, personal reflection, practice based application and reflection, including peer and tutor review.  
  • Distance learning resources.
  • Delivery of supporting resources such as study guides and lecture material online. 
  • Facilitated group work, including tutor and peer evaluation are a key component of this course. 
  • Personal tutor and peer support, to provide an academic, practice based and personal support mechanism alongside facilitated networking.

Assessment methods will vary depending on the module. They include:

LINKS WITH INDUSTRY

This programme has strong links with several premiership and football league clubs, as well as local rugby and basketball teams.

As part of this programme you would be expected to assess athlete performance and put forward suggestions for improvement. Upon successful completion of this programme you will be equipped with the required skills to apply for ISPAS (International Society of Performance Analysis of Sport) accreditation.

FURTHER STUDY

Upon successful completion of the course it would be possible to progress on to a PhD, or a PhD via publication. We offer a range of research degrees relevant to your area of practice.

  • There is also the Reflotron which another multi-use system that can measure blood cholesterol and haemoglobin as well as portable blood glucose and lactate analysers.

- Research Project
This project aims to enable students to demonstrate the skills necessary to produce a scholarly, in-depth, empirical research study, resource, or report.

- Research Methods
This module will develop your ability to design and statistically analyse experimental, quasi-experimental and non-experimental quantitative studies. It will allow you to appreciate the strengths and limitations of the different quantitative and qualitative research designs used in coaching and sport, health and exercise science; and synthesize knowledge and competencies gained during taught modules to produce a scholarly, in-depth critical review and proposal for a research study.

- Effective Coaching
You will develop an advanced understanding of critical self-reflective skills through the use of video analysis, which includes identifying key coaching styles, behaviours and feedback techniques required in advanced coaching situations. In addition, you will develop an in depth understanding of the interdisciplinary approaches that contribute to the coaching process including your ability to recognise and develop current coaching practice and coaching philosophies.

- Professional Work Based Development
This modules provides an opportunity for students to observe and participate in work-based professional environments, including identifying a work problem for you to overcome, which will enhance your professional and vocational learning and inform your own everyday practice. As part of your studies you will critically reflect on your learning throughout the work placement. You will, together with the module team, identify an organisation or organisations that are relevant to your field of study and that will be able to provide 140 hours of work experience.

Option Modules (choose three):
- Developing Expertise in Sport
This module aims to enable you to develop a systematic knowledge and critical understanding of how coaches develop and maintain expertise in sport and the ability to critically appraise coaching practice in the context of current approaches to skill development

- High Performance Environment
This module focuses on developing a multi-disciplinary perspective of factors that act upon the elite athlete and how these contribute to the development of elite performance. You will analyse how the coach, psychologist, conditioning coach, medical staff and nutritionist assist and complement each other in producing a high performance environment. The management of the performance environment will be discussed and the many issues that underpin successful implementation of elite sport science support will also be analysed.

- Strength and Conditioning
At the end of this module you will have developed your knowledge and critical understanding of concepts and theories regarding strength and conditioning. You will also have developed the ability to implement effective strength and conditioning programmes into a range of performance environments. The above have been closely linked to the professional standards required for accreditation by both the NSCA and the UKSCA.

- Movement Analysis
This module aims to develop your awareness of the analysis of sports performance, with particular emphasis on technique analysis and notation analysis. The use of systematic observation techniques in the analysis of sports performance will also be considered.

Learning and teaching methods

Teaching methods include lectures, video analysis, seminars and workshops, some of which will be student-led. Lectures will be held predominately held on a Monday between 2pm-8pm and /or a Tuesday depending on your module choice. A draft timetable can be requested from the course leader Melanie Tuckwell

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

The UK Vision for Coaching has clearly identified the need to develop Talent Coaches, Performance Coaches and High Performance Coaches. This course will provide opportunities for individuals to develop in these roles within their National Governing Body or sport.

We provide performance support for elite athletes and competitive teams. We consistently perform well against the elite of university sport. A high number of our performance teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme at the elite level. Some of our graduates have gone on to secure jobs with England Netball, Southampton FC, AFC Bournemouth, Brighton FC, Bristol City FC, London Scottish RFC, Surrey County Cricket Club, amongst others.

Several teams are supported with high-level coaching, training facility support and sports science analysis. Numerous local and national sports clubs’ links with our student sports teams provide additional high-level playing opportunities.

Work placements

THE COURSE INCLUDES AN EXTENSIVE WORK PLACEMENT MODULE INVOLVING WORK RELATED LEARNING AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF SKILLS SPECIFIC TO THE WORLD OF COMMERCIAL SPORTS PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS. YOU WILL BE INVOLVED WITHIN AN ELITE, SEMI-PROFESSIONAL OR PROFESSIONAL SPORTS SETTING THROUGH ORGANISATIONS CONNECTED WITH THE UNIVERSITY, OR EVEN ONE OF YOUR CHOICE PROVIDING AN AGREEMENT IS ARRANGED. THROUGH THE DEPARTMENTS' CONSULTANCY WORK, THERE IS OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH A VARIETY OF CLUBS FROM VARIOUS SPORTS. THIS PLACEMENT HAS RANGED FROM A VARIETY OF SPORTS OVER THE YEARS INCLUDING FOOTBALL, RUGBY, CRICKET, BASKETBALL AND NETBALL.

To gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Performance Analysis, students need to complete six modules. Each module is assessed by a 4,000-word assignment.

To gain an MSc in Sports Performance Analysis, students need to complete six modules, and either a 12,000 word thesis or a 6,000 word journal article and an oral presentation.

We use a broad range of assessments, which are also novel and vocational to help enhance key employability skills i.e. job application, job interview, CPD portfolio, scout reports, and oral presentations, as well as scientific reports and independent research projects.

Performance Analysis in the Cardiff School of Sport is world leading in terms of academic and applied perspectives. The School has offered post-graduate study in Performance Analysis since the first ever Masters in Performance Analysis was developed in 2003. The Cardiff School of Sport has a unique Centre of Performance Analysis boasting high-spec teaching and practical based laboratories with a multitude of world-leading software and resources available. The School has developed two new pathways designed to reflect recent developments within sport performance analysis.

The programme combines academic, practical and research based skills to allow you to develop in your chosen area. Students can elect to specialise in specific named pathways in either Applied or Analytics. The Applied pathway prepares skilled practitioners with sound scientific principles to base their work and develop their understanding of the theory behind the analysis. The Analytics pathway combines data science skills and knowledge of sport with performance analysis theory.

Behaviour analysts focus on understanding how a person’s interactions with the environment influence behaviour. They use this information to design effective interventions that will help people learn more appropriate behaviours, as well as reducing challenging behaviour.

This MSc Behaviour Analysis and Therapy course provides a solid understanding of the scientific principles that underpin behaviour analysis, and the therapeutic techniques derived from those principles. You will be taught by a team of Board Certified Behaviour Analysts who are internationally-recognised for their research and clinical work in the field.

Our MSc is approved by the Behaviour Analysis Certification Board (BACB), which is the international regulatory body for the practice of behaviour analysis. Students who successfully complete the course will meet the degree and module requirements for certification as a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA). Certification also requires supervised practice and a passing score on the international certification exam.

The MSc Behaviour Analysis and Therapy has been designed to reflect certification standards and covers a full range of topics in Behaviour Analysis. However, it is possible for students to complete our Postgraduate Certificate programme which allows students to complete supervised practice in addition to this MSc. Students may either choose to start this qualification after completion of the MSc or may begin work towards their supervised practice alongside their MSc studies.

Learning and teaching methods

You will be taught through face-to-face delivery in the form of lectures, seminars and practical workshops. Additionally you will develop your research skills through the completion of a supervised dissertation component. The teaching delivery will be blocked into two days per week for full-time students.

The teaching team has well established links with schools, social care settings and healthcare providers, which provide ideal locations for dissertation research. You may also have opportunities to assist with ongoing research or clinical work in the field, as well as working in the University’s Psychology and Well-Being Clinic (PAWB Wales), which provides early intervention therapy to children with autism.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Professionals trained in behaviour analysis are in increasing demand in the UK, particularly those who are BACB-certified.

Behaviour analysts are employed in a variety of contexts, including service providers for people with autism and/or learning disabilities, the NHS, schools, and residential treatment facilities for people with challenging behaviour. Some behaviour analysts also work as independent consultants in their areas of expertise.

Assessment methods

Assessments include examinations, practical assignments, and essays. You will also complete a dissertation, which allows you to analyse behaviour systematically and evaluate the success of treatment under the close supervision of a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst.

Facilities

As a student in the School of Psychology, you’ll have access to the latest learning technologies, facilities and equipment, including excellent designated facilities.

These include observation and interview rooms equipped with two-way mirror, CCTV and audio and allow research and interview practice sessions to be conducted and recorded onto DVD. We also have a custom-built air-conditioned PC laboratory which provides access to specialist software for running psychology experiments and conducting careers guidance interviews. More specialist equipment is also available in our cognitive suite and more details about this are given below.

- The Cognitive Psychology Suite
The cognitive psychology suite houses specialist psychology equipment. This includes eye tracking equipment which is capable of studying the eye movements of individuals whilst they complete cognitive tasks. The suite includes EEG (electroencephalogram) and ECG (electrocardiogram) facilities for recording electrical activity in the heart and scalp. There is also a driving simulator which is currently being used by postgraduate students to complete a study which examines the effects of stressors on driving performance.

As well as our excellent dedicated teaching facilities, the School of Psychology offers a wide range of psychological services to the general public. The MSc in Big Data and High Performance Computing provides students with an in-depth understanding of big data analysis and processing using high performance computing technology. Run in conjuction with the STFC Hartree Centre, this MSc programme enables students to gain a specialist qualification in an area of computing that is in great demand worldwide.

Big data is commonly described as data that is so large that it cannot be readily processed using standard techniques. Our current global ability to collect data is such that “big data” sets are becoming common-place.

The most obvious example of this is the exponential growth of the World Wide Web; however there are many public and private enterprises where the analysis of large-scale data sets is critical to growth. Although significant computer power exists, the necessary skills-base is lagging behind the technology.

There is an employment gap looming in the field of big data, especially in the context of the skills required with respect to the application of High Performance Computing (HPC) capabilities to address big data problems.

The MSc in Big Data and High Performance Computing is designed to address this anticipated skills gap and provide those completing the programme with the necessary abilities (abilities which will be highly desirable within the employment market) to address big data centric problems in the context of HPC.

The programme has been designed and operates in close collaboration with the Hartree High Performance Computing Centre and focuses on the practical application of Big Data and HPC technology.

The programme is organised as two taught semesters followed by an individual project undertaken over either the summer or, if desired, during the following year of study. The MSc in Financial Analysis and Fund Management is a very challenging programme that offers students the opportunity to study for the Level I and Level II CFA® exams at the same time as the MSc Financial Analysis and Fund Management.

The MSc in Financial Analysis and Fund Management is one of a limited number of programmes globally which has been awarded ‘University Affiliation Program’ Status by the CFA® institute, this means that the programme covers at least 70% of the CFA® level I and II syllabus.

Run by the Xfi Centre for Finance and Investment, it is a twelve month full-time programme, and is designed for those wishing to learn fundamental and advanced theory in investment analysis.

Students on this programme will have access to a dedicated Thomson Reuters lab and in addition to Datastream and other financial databases and software systems.

All of the following are included in the fees for this programme:

  • MSc Financial Analysis and Fund Management programme
  • The three-week induction and foundation programme
  • Four weekend CFA® dedicated training sessions
  • The cost of enrolment and registration for two CFA® exams
  • The CFA® level I and II text books
  • A CFA® approved calculator

CFA® Track

The MSc in Financial Analysis and Fund Management with CFA® Track enables you to take Levels I and II of the Chartered Financial Analyst® qualification, while also continuing to study Financial Analysis and Fund Management. We provide extensive additional training for the CFA® level I and II professional examinations in December and June.

MSc Only Track

With the MSc Only Track, you are not required to register for the CFA® exams, or attend the workshops organised for those on the CFA® Track.

The double degree option enables you to gain a second Masters qualification by studying for a year with one of our prestigious partner universities. Programme structure

This programme is a 12 month full-time programme, studied over three terms. It is based at the Exeter campus of the University throughout this time.

During the programme you will study modules (including the dissertation) totalling 180 credits. Please note that modules are subject to change. To ensure a high level of coverage of the CFA® syllabus all of the modules on this programme are compulsory.

What you will study

Technical Development in Sport

On this unit you will critically analyse coaching methods and how skill is acquired, building your understanding and use of technology for developing, monitoring and testing athletic performance.

Psycho-Social Development in Sport 

The aim of this unit is to analyse the theories underpinning talent identification and long-term athlete development, and to examine the psycho-social factors affecting performance throughout an athlete’s career.

Physical Preparation in Sport and Exercise

This unit examines the science behind effective training, injury prevention and rehabilitation in a practical setting. You will focus on physical and mental loading, and on the key fitness components of strength, speed, endurance and flexibility.

Tactical Development in Sport 

This unit focuses on performance analysis techniques, providing practical opportunities to collect, assimilate and analyse tactical, technical and time motion information, with the aim of improving performance.

Marginal Gains for Peak Performance 

This unit identifies past, current and future methods of obtaining potential marginal advantage in performance, with a chance to build first-hand experience via off-site learning.

Individual Project 

The project provides an opportunity to undertake a sustained, intensive and independent investigation into a topic of your choosing, presenting your work in a peer-reviewed journal format.

Facilities

Students have full access to the University’s leading fully-equipped sports science facilities, which boast a BASES-accredited physiology laboratory, as well as biomechanics, health and exercise, and psychology laboratories. Many of these facilities are regularly used by professional athletes, including players from Southampton FC.

Your future

You could work with professional, elite or Olympic athletes, meeting the challenges of ensuring they maintain peak fitness in world-class competition, or work with hospitals and health organisations to develop training and recovery programmes for patients suffering injury or disability. Our industry partners are also integral in the provision of placement opportunities, giving you the advantage of real-world experience alongside potential employers during your master’s studies.

Placements

Prior to starting the course you’ll be expected to have a placement organised that will last throughout your studies; this can be in more than one organisation if required. The placement should be in a role relevant to the course, and might include (but not limited to) coach, sport scientist, performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, biomechanist, laboratory technician, etc.

If you’ve been unable to organise a placement, the course team will support you in finding a placement, potentially with university partners Southampton FC or a range of other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC, GB Wheelchair Rugby and more.
