Why study MSc Nursing with the University of Dundee?

The School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Dundee has an international reputation for providing flexible programmes designed to offer a student-led approach to postgraduate education. Most programmes are offered on a part-time basis and delivered through high quality online distance learning. A small number of modules are also available for locally based students.

The programme is delivered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery which is part of the College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing.

Although this award is only available to registered or licensed nurses, the modules are shared with a wide multidisciplinary student body undertaking the MSc Midwifery, MSc Maternal and Infant Health and the MSc Health Studies. This enhances the student experience and makes the learning more appropriate to real practice environments which are rarely unidisciplinary.

What are the aims of this programme?

We aim to provide an intellectual environment within which you are committed and challenged to develop the knowledge and skills required to enhance your own health and social care practice as well as to advance practice in your own profession or role. The aim is also to support multidisciplinary collegiality and create a global community of scholars displaying postgraduate attributes of confidence, complexity, creativity, professionalism, autonomy and the articulation of novel perspectives to problem solving.

How you will be taught

The programme is generally delivered online using the University of Dundee virtual learning environment My Dundee. Some modules are delivered in a blended format and these are limited to students more locally within Scotland.

What you will study

The programme is delivered on a modular basis over a period of 3 and half years. One module is taken per semester and semesters start in September and January. There are two intakes per year.

You are required to take four modules and a dissertation in order to complete the full MSc but can exit with a Postgraduate Certificate after two modules and a Postgraduate Diploma after four modules. In order to exit with a named award the award pre-requisites must be met.

Students undertaking the Diploma or MSc must take one research core, one professional core, the award core requirements and an option module where available. Some awards have two award cores and no option module can be taken.

Modules available

The module portfolio comprises a choice of two research modules, a number of professional modules relating to leadership, quality and clinical governance, and learning, teaching and assessment in practice among others.

A number of clinically relevant modules are also available depending on the chosen award. Some modules are only offered every second year and you will be helped to decide the best portfolio of modules to meet your individual needs.

How you will be assessed

The programme is assessed using a variety of traditional and more innovative approaches. We use essays, portfolios, folders of evidence, research proposals, learning contracts, exams, OSCEs, and assessed online activities such as debates and team work.

Careers

While almost all of our students are already in professional roles, students who have completed our masters programmes in the past have gone on into management and other promoted posts as well as specialist roles such as hospital at night and clinical governance leads.

COURSE SUMMARY

This prestigious course is for qualified nurses would want to develop their knowledge and skills in order to advance their careers in the specialism of research, education, practice or international nursing.

The MSc Nursing will empower you to take forward your practice and patient care through critically exploring professional biography, the therapeutic relationship and embedding an evidence based and person centred approach to care. 

By studying modules relevant to contemporary clinical practice, you take control of your personal, professional and academic development whilst engaging in critical debate about the issues at the forefront of nursing practice. You will gain skills in applying new knowledge to your practice and achieve mastery of nursing related to your chosen award. An innovative feature of the International pathway includes a bespoke module of observational clinical experience and simulated practice for international students.

We also offer our MSc Nursing programme as a one year course which is taught on a blended basis, meaning that whilst you study in Salford for semester 1, the remainder of the course is taught via distance learning. See the course page for details.

COURSE DETAILS

There are six pathway options open to you as part of this programme, and your choice might depend on where you see your Masters programme fitting into your career. The modules you select will vary depending on the pathway chosen (see details below).

For the PgCert, you will need to study Critically Exploring Professional Practice and one further optional module and for the PgDip you will need to study Critically Exploring Professional Practice and three further optional modules.

The pathways you can choose to follow are:

MSC NURSING: INTERNATIONAL  

A new and innovative award that is open to both international and UK nurses, who will study together the global context of nursing. The pathway includes an opportunity for international students to undertake some bespoke observational placements in the UK healthcare system, supported by application  of  skills  in  a state-of-the-art high-fidelity clinical simulation suite. 

MSC NURSING: EDUCATION  

This pathway is led and taught by experts in the field. This award allows you to concentrate on teaching and learning in both clinical practice and academic contexts. You will work alongside expert teachers who will support you to develop as a teacher with a thorough understanding of a range of learning and teaching strategies.This option may particularly suit those in new clinical teaching roles, or those seeking a future academic teaching career.  

MSC NURSING: RESEARCH  

Using the evidence-base to improve patient care lies at the heart of this pathway. You will gain advanced knowledge and skills in all aspects of research and have access to international expertise from our research groups.  

MSC NURSING: PRACTICE  

This pathway is open to nurses practicing in the UK only. It allows you to build on your current skills, plan, implement and evaluate patient care at an advanced level within the context of your own workplace. There is an emphasis on combining practical skills with sound theoretical principles.  

MSC NURSING: PRACTICE (NEUROSCIENCE)          

This new pathway aims to equip the qualified nurse with the skills and knowledge to create and implement innovative approaches to neuroscience care delivery.      

MSC NURSING

You can choose to focus on the general award in order to keep your career options open. The MSc Nursing will empower you to develop a mastery of your practice and take forward person centred care. You will have an opportunity to critically examine your practice and services and develop an evidence based  approach to improve patient care. 

TEACHING

A range of teaching strategies are used, including seminars, lectures, action learning, online learning, directed study, practice based assessments and peer supported learning. The MSc Nursing is underpinned by a student centred teaching and learning philosophy.

Part-time students usually study one module per semester; full-time students will undertake two modules per semester. All students must complete 120 level 7 credits before progressing on to the dissertation.

For the two year part-time option, students will study over Semester 3 whereas for the three year option, you will study over Semesters 1 and 2.

ASSESSMENT

A range of formative and summative assessments will cater for your individual learning style. These include:

EMPLOYABILITY

Postgraduate Certificate Nursing

You are provided with the opportunity to create a challenging and rewarding Master’s programme tailored to your professional needs and aspirations.

You select three 20 credit modules from a suite of non-clinical ‘option’ modules.

Postgraduate Certificate Clinical Specialist Nursing

This pathway provides you with an opportunity to develop Master’s level education in contemporary specialist nursing theory and practice in relation to your chosen clinical area. It is suitable for experienced nurses wishing to advance their professional career and contribute to the delivery and future development of specialist clinical nursing care in order to enhance the quality of the service users and carers’ experience.

You study three compulsory 20 credit modules for the specialist area from which you come, one module relates to clinical competency development.

Upon completion of one of the Postgraduate Certificates, to gain an MSc Nursing you must complete the two 20 credit core modules listed below, and one of the 20 credit option modules, followed by one of the 60 credit option modules.

Assessment

The assessment strategy for this course is closely aligned to the teaching and learning strategy which is designed to have: immediate professional relevance; foster active learning, be leaner-centred in approach and draw on expertise-by-experience. The choice of assessments is determined by their fitness for purpose i.e. to evidence achievement of unit learning outcomes at Masters level (Level 7).

How will I study?

You will be taught using a combination of seminars, lectures, tutorials, work-based learning and technology enhanced learning. The theory part of the programme is delivered during the normal working week (Monday to Friday).

You will spend 50% of your time in practice which will be undertaken in hospitals and community settings within the NHS, local authority, independent and voluntary organisations. You will be supported by a practice placement mentor/supervisor and a practice education facilitator.

Placements include weekend, early morning, evening and night work to ensure access to a full range of practice experiences across 24 hour care. There may also be the opportunity to undertake a practice learning experience outside the region, either within the United Kingdom or internationally.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment in both theory and practice is continuous, assessed against national outcomes and generic and field competencies, with students required to demonstrate evidence of their achievement. A range of assessment of theory procedures is in place including assignments, seminar presentations, advanced notice examinations, online learning activities, case studies and portfolio work.

MSc Nursing (Child) Course Structure

The 2-year MSc in Nursing (Child) is open to applicants who have already completed an honours degree and have a minimum of 750 hours’ experience in a healthcare setting in the last year.

The curriculum for the MSc in Nursing is designed to meet the needs of the changing demography in the wider population and the emerging health needs. A range of teaching and learning strategies are implemented to engage the learner including simulation, practice learning, lectures, skills rehearsals, and online digital learning resources.

Practice based learning is central to the students’ development, and Nursing (Child) students will spend 40 weeks of their course on placement. Here they will gain experience in a diverse range of nursing settings, including community, nursing homes, and hospitals.

The Nursing (Child) programme has been designed to develop the students’ personal and professional attributes, knowledge and skills required of a newly registered nurse.

The Nursing (Child) course does not follow the usual University term times. The academic year starts in early September and ends late the following August. 

50% of the teaching for Nursing students will take place in healthcare placements, and the other 50% will be taught at university.

The MSc Nursing (Child) is made up of five modules:

Year 1:

Module 1 – Introduction to Nursing

Module 2 - Living with Long-term and Chronic Conditions

Year 2

Module 3 – Managing Complex Care in Deteriorating Situations

Module 4 – Leadership & Decision-making

Teaching is based on a social model and Nursing (Child) students will be taught to appreciate healthcare and the well- being of the patient in the wider context. A range of teaching methods will be adopted in order to provide a stimulating learning environment. These will include; lectures, guided reading, seminars, discussion groups, scenarios, distance learning, practical sessions, simulated practice and Enquiry Based Learning.

Assessments will enable Nursing (Child) students to develop creative, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Nursing (Child) students will learn how to deal with real-life situations in the form of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), poster presentations and will even write a journal article ready for publication.

Fees and Funding for Nursing (Child) Course

There are no tuition fees to pay for the MSc Nursing (Child) for UK / EU students.

To be eligible for WEDS funding international students must have residency for 3 years (working and living) in the United Kingdom. EU area students can also apply. Standard fees apply for international students.

Child Nursing graduates care for children and young people in hospitals in their own home, special schools, and children’s centres.

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) program offers students in a wide range of disciplines the opportunity to earn a master’s degree by writing a Thesis and successfully completing a limited number of courses. The number and details of the courses are determined within the first semester of the student's program.

Students may complete their degrees in either a full- or part-time capacity. Full-time students complete a 24-month program while part-time students complete a 48-month program. Part-time students will normally complete all required course work in the first 24 months, with the subsequent months committed to continued research and production of the Thesis.

Although degrees are awarded in specific disciplines, the program is administered centrally by the School of Graduate Studies, rather than by individual departments or Faculties.

Graduate degrees traditionally have been awarded for the successful completion of a satisfactory thesis. The thesis route expresses the fundamental tradition of academic scholarship. It also relates to the University’s undergraduate programs, because the creation of a thesis in any discipline calls for a range of skills which are central to the liberal education tradition, including analysis and synthesis of ideas, empirical investigations, the construction and articulation of arguments, and writing skills.

Because of the nature of the M.Sc. program, the thesis forms the central requirement of the program. At the master’s level, a thesis involves close collaboration between supervisor and student. Co-operative Education & Internship Option - Graduate Studies

The Co-operative Education/Internship Option is available to students for the Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Science (MSc) programs. Co-operative education is an educational model that formally integrates academic study at the master’s level with relevant, paid work experience in appropriate employment fields such as government, institutions, and industry. The University, the employer, and the student are in partnership to ensure an enriching experience toward the student's professional development.

Course detail

The demand for mental health nurses is ever increasing while the requirement for nurses with a postgraduate qualification is also growing.

If you have undergraduate degree from a health, social care or health science related area and have the dedication and commitment to study and work full time, then course will enable you become a registered nurse in two years.

You will study both in an academic setting and work in clinical practice environments enabling you to complete the necessary knowledge and skills to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a nurse.
