Our MSc Lean Six Sigma for Operational Excellence programme will build understanding of the tools and techniques of Lean Six Sigma methodologies and demonstrate the tangible and quantifiable results these bring to the bottom line. Course overview

Since the publication in 1996 of Lean Thinking (Womack and Jones), ‘Lean’ has established itself as the most effective and most widely adopted improvement methodology for operations in the world. With roots in the Toyota Production System and in earlier approaches, Lean has expanded vertically into accounting, marketing, HR, IT, design and R&D, and logistics, and horizontally into service, health, government, and banking. Lean is now integrated with other effective approaches including Systems Thinking and Six Sigma. The Buckingham degree is titled ‘Lean Enterprise’ rather than ‘Lean Operations’ . The focus, however, is on integrated operations rather than on learning a range of diverse disciplines or tools.

Whilst today not everyone agrees with the term ‘Lean’, the principles learned in this degree are now ‘mainstream’ in any aspiring operation.

Why Buckingham?

The 22 month, part-time Buckingham MSc is specifically designed for practising managers working, or aspiring to work, in the delivery of services or products. The degree is in ‘enterprise’ because most organisations rely on the integration of employees, customers and suppliers to deliver value. This involves end-to-end value streams from understanding customer requirements, through design and operations and on to product or service delivery. Knowledge of accounting, quality, design, innovation, service are all necessary.

The typical age of participants is 30s and 40s. All participants have considerable experience and are contributors as well as recipients.

Buckingham has an ethos of student support, consistently leading the National Student Survey for student satisfaction. As a private university with a Royal Charter, Buckingham has great opportunities for innovation. The MSc is part of the Buckingham Lean Enterprise Unit (BLEU).

Faculty

The staff of the programme are all experienced Lean, Systems, and Six Sigma practitioners as well as all having years of experience in hands-on Masters-level Lean teaching.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the programme is that Lean can only effectively be learned with hands-on practice. Hence, a considerable part of the programme is held on-site at plant and service locations. By the end of the programme, participants will have taken part in real exercises (not just case studies) in several organizations in several sectors.

Mentoring is an important part of learning about Lean. Detailed mentoring, feedback, and discussion are important incorporated aspects. Networking, of course, is also a valuable aspect that results from the class profile.

The student group is deliberately small to allow both practical hands-on participation and personal interaction with some of the leading practitioners in the UK.

Course outline

During the first 13 months, students take eight 5-day modules, all of which are assessed by assignment. Extensive use is made of electronic meetings and mentoring. An iPad is recommended.

The modules are a set, one flowing into the next, building into an integrated system. Hence there are currently no elective modules. Several staff contribute on more than one module.

Facilities

The aerospace industry has become increasingly competitive and in recognising this, the University has recently invested £1.8m into its aerospace facilities.

Facilities available to our students have been fully approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). With access to an EASA-approved suite of practical training facilities, our students can use a range of industry-standard facilities.

Our Aerospace Centre is home to a Jetstream 31 Twin Turboprop aircraft, assembled with Honeywell TPE331 Engines and Rockwell-Collins Proline II Avionics. It has a 19-passenger configuration.

The EASA-approved suite contains training and practical workshops and laboratories. Each area contains the tools and equipment required to facilitate the instruction of either mechanical or avionic practical tasks as required by the CAA.

Students use the TQ two-shaft gas turbine rig to investigate the inner workings of a gas turbine engine by collecting real data and subsequently analysing them for engine performance.

Our sub-sonic wind tunnel is used for basic aerodynamic instruction, testing and demonstrations on various aerofoil shapes and configurations.

The single-seater, full motion, three axes Merlin MP521 flight simulator can be programmed for several aircraft types that include the Airbus A320 and the Cessna 150.

Learning Style

The taught component of the course is a mixture of lectures, seminars, technology-enabled learning, syndicate/group work, practical work and forum activities. Module leaders are experts in their fields and are supported by external speakers working in organisations at the forefront of their fields.

Industrial visits are available to all students and the course is assessed through post module assignments.

Each module will usually last one week.

After You Graduate

Our degree was developed within the Service Systems Research Group at WMG, working alongside leading companies such as IBM, Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems. You’ll join our collective drive to actively shape research and teaching in this area. STRUCTURE & TEACHING

The time you take to complete your studies is up to you and is not tied to the academic calendar. It depends on the point at which you start the course and your personal circumstances at work and at home. Students make up the academic credit required for achievement of their award through a combination of different learning all of which is detailed in a learning contract. The balance of elements in a learning programme is agreed by negotiation between you and your Workplace Partner, Academic Tutor and Learning Manager.

The learning can include:

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): Top up a PgCert or PgDip or international equivalent in an engineering based subject to a full MSc. The maximum RPL credit you can receive is two-thirds of the credit for the award. For further information contact the Learning at Work department.
  • Work-based Learning Projects: These usually make up the bulk of the learning contract. They must involve new learning for you, so they cannot be simply the activities involved in your regular job. However, they should be of value to your employer as well as yourself and you should be able to carry out much of the project work in normal working hours. Previous WBL projects have considered, for example, the Deployment of Lean Six Sigma, the Application of Project Management in the Design and Installation of Training Information Systems.
  • Taught Units: Campus-based or distance learning units from the University of Portsmouth or other higher education institutions can be included in your programme. They are a good way of acquiring new knowledge in a structured way. Examples include Business Transformation Through Quality Management, and Project Management and Control.

We use the best and most current research and professional practice, alongside feedback from our students, to make sure course content is relevant to your future career or further studies.

Therefore, some course content may change over time to reflect changes in the discipline or industry and some optional units may not run every year. If a unit doesn’t run, we’ll let you know as soon as possible and help you choose an alternative unit.

  • Clinical Trials : This is ideal for those wishing to specialise in this key area and is of relevance to those working in the NHS, as well as in industrial settings.
  • Pharmaceutical Microbiology : We work with PharMIG on the content and curriculum of this programme, ensuring that it is recognised as a leader within the field.
  • Pharmaceutical Business Development and Licensing : Our programme is delivered in partnership with the Pharmaceutical Licensing Group, enabling you to learn from leaders in networking and the legal field.
  • Industrial Pharmacy : This programme covers the industrial pharmacist role from formulation through to QA and QC, and also regulatory affairs and lean processes (including Six Sigma).

Many of our units have been developed to support those seeking to build their QP portfolio and our team includes QPs who are willing to support your development through this pathway.

Engineering management is critical in the delivery of technical products and services.

This course combines process performance with strategic business analysis to deliver an in-depth understanding of operational issues in relation to engineering industries.

The course is aimed at graduates wishing to broaden their expertise from a technological undergraduate degree, or who want to work within the engineering industry in a management capacity.

The programme is based within the Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management, the only department in the UK combining end-to-end expertise from creative design, through engineering design, manufacture and management of the entire system.

What you’ll study

The course focuses on the use and application of techniques that enable production and operational effectiveness, as well as addressing wider strategic and global issues.

The course structure and content are based on the operational needs of 21st century engineering organisations, and you will be equipped with state-of-the-art concepts, methods, techniques and tools to contribute towards the competitiveness of industrial and commercial organisations worldwide.

As well as a team industry project, the scope of the course includes: continuous process improvement; quality and lean six sigma techniques; production planning; and performance measurement content. Students can also choose from optional modules and complete a Masters dissertation.

Major projects

Each student will undertake an individual project assignment in which a selected topic is studies in depth.

Each individual project should involve a comprehensive critical literature review, research methodology, structured analysis of data and writing up of as a thesis. 

Assessment

Modules will be assessed by a mix of assignments and examinations. For the Masters project, students have the opportunity to select a project from a wide range of Process Excellence topics. Successful completion of all compulsory modules, optional modules, a group project and an individual Masters project will lead to the award of an MSc.

Production/Operations managers are responsible for planning, coordination and control of manufacturing processes in order to make sure goods and services are produced efficiently and that the correct amount is produced at the right cost and level of quality.

This course aims to provide you with the inter-disciplinary knowledge, attributes and skills necessary to apply the principles of advanced manufacturing systems within the manufacturing industry. You will study several key topics and also complete a four-month individual project tailored to your individual interests that can take place in our own laboratories or, by agreement, in industry.

Here are the units you will study:

Integrated Manufacturing Systems: Systems concepts and techniques are developed in logistics and manufacturing areas with a strong emphasis on simulation techniques and practical case study analysis.

Operations and Quality Management: A strategic approach is used with modern inventory and supply chain management and logistics tools and techniques. Management strategies are developed for quality, including quality systems and quality control.

Advanced Materials: This unit is designed to deal with a wide range of advanced materials for engineering applications. Teaching will address analytical and numerical methods to assess the strength, stiffness, toughness, non-linearity behaviours, vibration and failures of engineering materials for component and structure design.

Supply Chain Management: Supply chain management involves the coordination of production, inventory, location and transportation, among participants in a supply chain. This unit considers the principles and tools of supply chain management, with an emphasis on lean six sigma methods.

Virtual Systems Design and Simulation for Production: This unit is particularly designed to enhance students’ analytical knowledge and practical skills focusing on a sustainable development of systematic approaches and lean production methods to support manufacturing systems analysis, design and performance evaluation with an aid of using advanced computer design and modelling simulation tools.

CAD/CAM Systems: An integrated approach is used towards CAD and CAM. Significant practical hands-on experience is given with commercial level software. Emphasis is placed on case study analysis and system selection and evaluation.

Individual Project: A strong feature that comprises a third of the course. You will be encouraged to undertake projects where possible in industrial companies. However, we also use our extensive resources and staff skills to undertake them within the University.

On this Purchasing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management course, you will undertake four 30 credit units and one 60 credit project unit. Our courses are designed to be engaging, attractive and flexible in the current global marketplace.

Your course takes place over three semesters. Depending upon when you join the course, this will determine the order of units which you will study. You will benefit by beginning your studies with others who started at one of the earlier points of entry.

Capstone project

Master's course provides the opportunity to undertake different types of project, a "Capstone" experience which completes the integration of your studies applied in one of the following:

• Professional Practice - the central aim of this unit is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the commercial context in which organisations operate. By reflecting upon your existing knowledge and experience you will be required to respond to a number of work-based scenarios through critical evaluation to determine an appropriate course of action.

• The Live Project - this will enable you to work as part of a team on a project provided by a business organisation. The exact nature of the level of work, and nature of responsibility will depend upon the chosen organisation. However, there will be close negotiation between the company and the Business School.

• The dissertation - this is a conventional dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words, enabling you to undertake in-depth research of a topic relating to your course. It will consist of research question, aims and objectives, rationale for undertaking the study, literature review, research methodology, analysis of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Assessment

In line with the Business School’s commitment to practice-based education, a large part of the assessment will relate to the demonstration of your ability to understand Purchasing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management in practice.

COURSE STRUCTURE

This course can be studied full-time, part-time on campus, or part-time by online distance learning. Admission onto the course is in September or January.

The Masters award consists of four taught modules followed by a Research Methods module and Dissertation. The PgDip requires the completion of the four taught modules. All modules are delivered over a 15 week period and are assessed through written coursework.

FOR THE FULL-TIME STUDY OPTION:

You will study two 30 credit taught modules in each of your first two semesters, these are designed to give you the core knowledge required in construction management. In the final semester you will undertake a dissertation worth 60 credits.

FOR THE DISTANCE LEARNING STUDY OPTION:

A 30 credit taught module is studied in each semester for the first 24 months. Assessment of these modules is driven by real-world problems aligned to your workplace and job role. Teaching is based around a virtual learning environment supported by interactive online sessions.

FOR THE PART-TIME ON CAMPUS STUDY OPTION:

Part-time students attend the University one day per week, usually on day release from employment in industry. A 30 credit module is studied each semester. Throughout the final two semesters you choose to undertake a dissertation or research by design project.

TEACHING

On campus study is delivered through a variety of learning and teaching methods. Lectures introduce new material and provide the core knowledge base for each module. Tutorials offer the opportunity for discussion and debate with personalised instruction from lecturers. Project work is an important aspect of the course enabling you to initiate and control research or other techniques to develop solutions to prescribed tasks. Throughout the course expert guest lecturers in relevant fields are invited to deliver lectures.

Distance learning uses an internet-based learning environment backed up by intensive tutor support. Weekly online tutorials are led by tutors with student interaction. Our online repository of learning material enables you to undertake self directed study at your own convenience. Learning is driven by real-world problems aligned to your workplace and job role.
