How you will learn

We offer high-quality technical skills training as well as a deep understanding of the importance of personal development for leaders, a thread that runs through all of our Masters programmes.

Our postgraduate masters programmes feature a mix of core and optional modules, allowing you to tailor your degree towards your individual personal development needs and career ambitions. You will complete up to 10 taught modules during your programme, totalling 180 credits. One module usually equates to 20 credits or 10 hours of work per week. Your week will include lectures, tutorials, workshops and personal study, with each accounting for 25% of your time on average. This stimulating mix of lectures and interactive tutorials provides you with the opportunity to discuss and explore the subject material in depth with your lecturers and fellow students. You will be introduced to the latest thinking and research findings and be able to challenge some of those that have created it. You will also explore real-world issues and tackle current business challenges, and interact with guest lectures and speakers from industry, giving you the opportunity to test, extend and refine your knowledge and skills.

How we assess you

You will learn and be assessed through a wide variety of teaching methods which vary depending on your chosen Masters programme. These include online materials and multimedia content, guest lectures, individual and group assignments, case studies, field visits, dealing room simulations, presentations, applied projects, consultancy work and examinations.

On average examinations form around 70% of the assessed work with the remaining 30% coming from coursework, including a written dissertation or project depending on your chosen programme. The exam period falls between April and June in the summer term, with students taking an average of 5 or 6 exams. Graduation normally takes place in December.

Ongoing support

While postgraduate students are self-motivated and determined individuals, study at this level can present additional pressures which we take seriously. Lecturers are available to discuss the content of each module and your personal tutor can meet with you regularly to discuss any additional issues. Full-time support staff are also available to help with any questions or issues that may arise during your time at Henley

Careers and accreditations

Each pathway of our MSc Information Management is designed to give a rigorous academic understanding of real-life and current business issues. Graduates of the Big Data in Business pathway will be equipped to develop strategies to manage Big Data. These skills are much in demand, in a variety of fields.  

A number of our students join our PhD programmes each year.

Students who pass the module – Business Domain and Requirements Analysis with a mark of 60 or above will be eligible for the British Computer Society Professional Certificate in Business Analysis Practice.

Programme structure
The learning process includes lectures as well as both group and individual project work. Students work individually on computer programming assignments, while other systems projects and the dissertation are completed as group projects with regular presentations.

Dissertation projects, presented in September, involve full-time work on a real management problem, generally with an Irish company. They should be mathematically complex with a computer-programming element.

Our MSc in Business Analytics will train you to become a business leader of the future. You will develop skills in information technology, quantitative methods for analysing data, and making optimized decisions. You will become an expert in the handling and analysis of big data and develop understanding, insight and transferable tools and skills.

We believe that knowledge is gained through experience. Throughout the course, you'll have access to the latest business analytics software thanks to our partnerships with IBM and SAS. You will also have the opportunity to do a dissertation with an industrial partner, applying theoretical knowledge in a practical setting.

Structure and Content

Our MSc in Business Analytics is a full-time degree that lasts 12 months. It is divided into two semesters and the summer period which runs from June to September. In Semester 1 you will study five core units. In Semester 2, you will study 3 core units and select two optional units from an approved selection.

Dissertation

The course will finish with a dissertation. You will produce a 12,000-15,000 word piece of research using techniques learned throughout the year. Your dissertation should demonstrate originality, innovation and drive.

The dissertation can be done as a company project, subject to approval from the Director of Studies.

This course addresses the need to propel information-gathering and data organisation, and exploit potential information and knowledge hidden in routinely collected data to improve decision-making. The course, which builds on the strength of two successful courses on data mining and on decision sciences, is more technology focused, and stretches the data mining and decision sciences theme to the broader agenda of business intelligence.

You will focus on developing solutions to real-world problems associated with the changing nature of IT infrastructure and increasing volumes of data, through the use of applications and case studies, while gaining a deep appreciation of the underlying models and techniques. You will also gain a greater understanding of the impact technological advances have on nature and practices adopted within the business intelligence and analytics practices, and know how to adapt to these changes.

Embedded into the course are two key themes. The first will help you to develop your skills in the use and application of various technologies, architectures, techniques, tools and methods. These include warehousing and data mining, distributed data management, and the technologies, architectures, and appropriate middleware and infrastructures supporting application layers. The second theme will enhance your knowledge of algorithms and the quantitative techniques suitable for analysing and mining data and developing decision models in a broad range of application areas. The project consolidates the taught subjects covered, while giving you the opportunity to pursue in-depth study in your chosen area.

Given the ever-increasing volume of data that businesses have access to today, there is a demand for employees who have computational and analytical skills and who can help inform business decisions to increase efficiency and ultimately build a competitive edge. Our Masters in Business Analytics has been developed with just that in mind and aims to train students to understand the variety of business environments as well as importance and relevance of decision problems facing organisations and ways of solving these using a variety of techniques.

Students will learn how to apply descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics of big data concepts and techniques to generate valuable insight that can assist with decision making. Last, but not least, the Masters will provide students with hands-on experience in applying these concepts and using these techniques and most of the popular analytics software through their projects including industry projects. In sum, the programme aims to equip students with the skills required to interpret, conceptualise and convert Big Data into useful information and thus enabling students to make better informed decisions as future business managers.

Programme structure

All students attend and complete four core courses in Semester 1 and four option courses in Semester 2. The programme concludes with a 60-credit Dissertation.

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and workshops. As this is a master’s course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

During the second year you’ll spend a whole semester studying in another country which will take your international experience to another level. You will learn the craft and skills required by analytic consultants, and which employers look for but often find lacking. It will cover process aspects of analytics projects, as well as skills in client interaction, problem structuring and data elicitation (with individuals and/or groups, and with hard/soft data), presenting data-driven analyses, report writing, and developing simple bespoke decision support systems.

- Discovery Analytics
You will be introduced to common statistical methods to explore and visualise cross sectional and temporal data. You will also learn about the design and conduct of data collection efforts, together with methods for dealing with data outliers and missing data. - Decision Analytics
Your will be introduced to common operational research techniques to help determine the best course of action for a given decision or problem. Topics covered include optimisation, simulation and decision and risk analysis.

- Managing Big Data

- Customer Analytics
You will focus on analytics techniques that can help organisations gain a deeper insight into customers’ behaviour and attitudes towards their products and services. It will cover approaches designed to provide a profile of customer segments, such as those grounded in data mining and multivariate statistical analysis. - Leading Analytics Initiatives
You will learn about the issues associated with implementing an analytics capability in organisations. - Operations Analytics
You will focus on analytics techniques that can help organisations to develop a better understanding of operational processes, and identify efficiency and cost reduction opportunities. Topics covered include advanced optimisation and simulation techniques.

Applicants for this programme are required to have at least a second class honours in the first division or international equivalent in any discipline, including business and management, and at least 10 credits equivalent value with significant mathematical/statistical content (However, this course is not suitable for students who have previously studied a significant amount of business analytics).

Are you looking to complement your undergraduate studies with a business-focused master’s degree that will enhance your employability? Do you want to gain experience of the latest techniques for analysing ‘big data’ in order to improve an organisation’s decision making? This two-year course with advanced practice develops broad business skills while also offering a specialist pathway in business analytics.

Specialist modules will cover topics like business intelligence and marketing metrics. You’ll develop your research skills through a master’s dissertation or an investigative consultancy project related to an issue faced by a real client.

In the second year of this course you’ll undertake an internship or further consultancy project. The course fee is divided evenly between year 1 and year 2. In addition, while you can only work twenty hours per week during term time, you can use the extra vacation periods to travel or work full time and help fund your time in the UK.

There is no requirement to have studied business or business analytics at undergraduate level.

Teaching And Assessment

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and workshops. As this is a master’s course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

Teaching is backed up by a well-designed support system that helps ensure a successful learning journey. We make sure that extensive feedback, from both tutors and peers, is built into the course.

During the second year you’ll undertake an internship or consultancy project for a whole semester. You’ll follow this up with an Applied Management Work Investigation Report that will critically analyse an issue related to your practical experience.

Our assessment strategy is based on our understanding that everyone has different needs, strengths and enthusiasms. Assessment is based on course work and our methods will include essays, reports, group work and presentations. The master’s dissertation or consultancy project will form a major part of the assessment.

Learning Environment

Newcastle Business School provides first-class teaching in a world-class environment. From social spaces and hub areas to lecture theatres and exhibition spaces, our facilities are exceptional. The University has also invested heavily in IT labs and facilities. You’ll use software such as ARIS Express Business Process Modelling, various SAS applications, Microsoft Project, specialist decision-making software, and Google Analytics.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research. Our use of lecture capture software will help you revise challenging material.

At Northumbria it’s easy to put your learning into practice. In addition to the Advanced Practice element of the course, further opportunities for experiential learning are available through our Student Engagement Centre which promotes volunteering and placements. The Business Clinic enables our students to participate in a ‘consultancy firm’ to provide advice for our region’s businesses.

Research-Rich Learning

As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new, higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your 15,000-word dissertation or your master’s consultancy project. We’ll support you in the development and completion of the dissertation/project.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief. It’ll be essential to undertake primary and desk research combined with reading and reflection.

Throughout your course you’ll be an active participant in the on-going research agenda that’s at the heart of Newcastle Business School. With conferences and research events regularly taking place, and with staff discussing their own research as it relates to the topics you’ll study, there’s a strong emphasis on engaging in up-to-date enquiry-based learning.

The course includes two modules that are focused on developing global management competencies. Topics during these modules include emotional intelligence, cultural awareness and the ability to work in diverse groups and teams, as well as project management and decision making.

A further module, ‘Academic and Professional Development’, has a specific focus on self-development. It includes formal sessions with our Careers and Employment Service which offers a range of workshops, one-to-one advice, and networking opportunities.

In the second year of the course you’ll be gaining workplace experience and putting your new learning into practice. You’ll develop a track record of achievement that will help you stand out from other job applicants. We’ll help you find an internship / project that matches your interests and career aspirations, building on Newcastle Business School’s very successful background in placing students.

A master’s course that takes two years, instead of just one, will carry particular weight with employers. They’ll understand that you’ll have a deeper understanding of topics as well as more hands-on practical experience.

Your Future

Our graduates typically go into professional and graduate management positions and, by the end of the course, you’ll be well-equipped to follow them. Some employers require completion of a two-year master’s degree and this course will meet their requirement.

Thanks to the specialist modules – Business Intelligence, Marketing Metrics and Analysis, and the dissertation/consultancy project – you’ll have a particular edge in areas related to business analytics, including market research, digital marketing and consulting.

If you decide to start up your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university.

Whatever you decide to do, you’ll have the transferable skills that employers expect from a master’s graduate from Northumbria University.
