Management and leadership in the health and social care sector is increasingly important worldwide, with The World Health Organization highlighting the need for managers to have appropriate competencies (WHO, 2007) and the NHS promoting specific values and principles of care (Department of Health, 2010).

Our course is designed to make sure you gain the knowledge, skills and emotional tools you need to meet these requirements and develop your full potential as a manager. You'll explore the important social and other factors which influence managing and leading both organisations and individuals, learning with other current and aspiring managers and leaders from a range of health and social care organisations from around the world.

Core Modules

Advanced Professional Decision Making

Advance your decision making skills through critical reflection and the help of a “critical friend”. This is a specialist module designated for our Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care course.

Current health and social care policy, along with the modernisation of the NHS and other international models, demands new ways of working across traditional boundaries and the implementation of national targets at local level.

This requires the development of roles for confident, autonomous practitioners, who possess the knowledge and skills to implement complex decisions in a rapidly changing environment, and to play key roles in service development.

You’ll need to be able to utilise practical decision making skills within an area of professional knowledge and develop strategies to facilitate the implementation of the outcomes of the decision making process into practice. This can be individually or within a team or organisation. In addition, management of change and service development are seen as core elements of the module, together with the enhancement of professional judgement and leadership.

Organisational Transformation in Health and Social Care

Here, you’ll critically explore change theory in relation to your own field of practice, and demonstrate understanding of the theoretical and philosophical components of organisational transformation.

This module encourages the synthesis of strategic discourse with operational application as modes of organisational structures thereby forming strong links between theory and practice. You’ll be expected to demonstrate an ability to isolate and focus on the significant features of problems and offer synthetic and coherent solutions.

It’s expected you’ll produce original or innovative work relating to your specialism that’s worthy of publication, public performance or display.

Research Studies

This module is designed to provide you with a critical overview of the main methodologies and designs applied to research within health and social care, professional practice, regulation and policy.

It provides you with an opportunity to explore the theoretical dilemmas that lie beneath the process of inquiry and its relationship to practice. The module will provide a framework within which to select, evaluate and justify the research methods chosen for your research project.

Major Project

The major project is of central importance to the Masters award. You’ll be expected to bring together aspects of learning from previous modules, as well as using the learning as the basis for planning, conducting and writing a research or work-based project.

This module will support you in your preparation and submission of a Masters level major project (either a research project or work-based project). There will be eight hours of workshop support available to you during the module. This will be delivered as four, two-hour workshops. In addition, there’ll be a full-day introductory workshop before the module commences.

You’ll be allocated a minimum of six hours individual supervisory support, with additional supervisory support negotiated between you and your supervisor.

Global Leadership (30 credits)

Businesses, whether private, public or third sector, operate in a world facing a range of urgent global issues. This module examines the fitness of businesses and individuals to tackle such issues, based on the Global Leadership model developed by lecturers at this university.

This module consists of four elements:

Effective decision making
Adoption of a global approach
Creation of a new business paradigm
Creation of a contemporary mission.

It also considers the related concept of mis-leadership, which looks at how leaders have often failed to achieve the optimum outcomes for those they lead. Leaders predominantly create context and this module will explore the skills required to successfully mould and develop the context in a chaotic environment.

Law and Ethics in Social Care (30 credits)

This module will give you a detailed and critical understanding of the generic ethical and legal theories and principles that underpin health and social care (e.g. consent, confidentiality, duty of care, human rights).

You’ll also have the opportunity to focus on particular aspects of law and ethics that have relevance to your practice or personal interest (e.g. mental health, data protection, negligence, resource allocation, and medical research). This module is particularly relevant to health and social care professionals looking to develop crucial insights into legal and ethical issues in practice.

Collaborative Practice in Integrated Care (30 credits)

The role of individuals is a central part of the government's agenda for modernisation, as evidenced by the creation of consultant practitioners posts (e.g. consultant nurse and consultant therapist). These posts function across professional and organisational boundaries, and provide strategic direction to their particular area of expertise.

Equally, in social work, closer links are being forged in terms of policy, practice and organisations. Implementing this policy is often fraught with difficulties. This module seeks to address some of the most salient issues.

Assessment

How you’re assessed will vary between modules. This is in order to assist you in developing submission evidence for Management and Leadership professional recognition later. Assignments include the production of report, essays and portfolio. For the Masters, a major project of no more than 18,000 words is also required.

The MSc in Leadership in Healthcare runs over 1 calendar year. Starting with an initial 12-week online module to develop skills in critical appraisal and knowledge of research methodologies, students then choose either the professional project module which consists of a 1,500 word proposal and 10,500 word professional.

On completion of the Masters in healthcare leadership, you will be able to:

The impetus for the MSc Global Healthcare Management programme stems from recognition, nationally and internationally, of the need to build leadership and management capabilities for those wishing to pursue careers within health care, social care and third sector organisations. Its rationale stems from the recognition, nationally and globally of the unique challenges and complexities that face the next generation of managers and leaders of health and social care systems across the world and the need to build leadership capability.

The MSc Global Healthcare Management programme has been carefully designed, drawing on the expertise of health, social care and leadership and management from within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health to enhance students’ personal/professional attributes, abilities to think creatively and apply entrepreneurial skills, in leading the delivery of quality health and social care services and responding to the global health challenges now and in the future. Interdisiciplinary learning is a feature of the programme with students studying alongside their peers on other MSc programmes delivered within the faculty.

The MSc Global Healthcare Management with Professional Experience, is an extended full-time Masters programme with a substantive professional experience component. Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with an external organisation or, campus-based professional experience. Internships are subject to a competitive application and selection process. The host organisation may include the University.

Internships may be paid or unpaid, and this will depend on what is being offered and agreed with the host organisation. Students who do not wish to undertake an internship or are not successful in securing an internship will undertake campus-based professional experience, which will deliver similar learning outcomes through supervised projects and activities designed to offer students the opportunity to integrate theory with an understanding of professional practice.

Learning and teaching will be facilitated by a team of highly qualified and academic staff from within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health who have relevant subject expertise in business, health and social care and management and leadership
Interprofessional learning across a range of modules, in which students will learn alongside their peers on other health and social care related MSc programmes in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health.

As part of the programme, students will complete the Global Professional Development module which has been developed in collaboration with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) affording students who meet the CMI evidence requirements a Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership and a Level 7 Award in Professional Consulting. Successful completion of the module will also enable students to apply for Chartered Manager status via the qualified route.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will study a range of modules which provide a detailed understanding of leadership and management combined with examination of contemporary and global challenges within healthcare management.

The course will feature a range of current and management theories relevant to the health and social care sectors. In addition, it will also explore multi-cultural and international dimensions of healthcare management. The programme will also develop students’ entrepreneurial skills and offer support with seeking employment opportunities.

Understanding gained from these modules will be demonstrated and applied in either the university-based Management Project (General) for those students on the full-time (12 month) and part-time (24 month) programmes or the Postgraduate Professional Experience Project for those students on the full-time (20 month programme).

You will experience learning with students from other Masters programmes within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health, in addition to those specialising in Global Healthcare Management at different stages of your course.

WORK PLACEMENTS

Placements

The MSc Health Management includes placements, projects, and internship opportunities.

Health management consultancy is a placement that is part of the academic requirement of the course. Consultancies address a wide range of issues: strategy development, operational efficiency, new technologies and business start-ups. Consultancy teams are directed by the client, and facilitated and supported by the MHM academic team.

Technology transfer and marketisation projects provide opportunities for training and mentoring in commercialisation, on-the-job learning in multi-disciplinary teams and in some cases the opportunity to join a start-up management team.

Internship opportunities are available through the MHM Intern Development Programme. This offers opportunities with some of the most influential healthcare organisations in London. Internships are three-month periods of work experience, and opportunities to leverage career experience and direction. Our philosophy is to base our teaching on real-world issues in facilities management (FM) at high-performing organisations in both the private and public sectors. Our students develop the ability to think critically about all facets of the FM services - maintenance, engineering, projects, catering, cleaning, security and property management, by considering engineering and management theories and concepts and their applications to FM situations in these service lines. This allows our students to use their experience to explore these applications in their current or future careers.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), two optional modules (30 credits) and an original dissertation (60 credits).

The majority of graduates are engaged at a senior level in facility management operations, consultancy or design. Some students use the MSc as a foundation for subsequent MPhil/PhD research. You complete an extensive research project assessed by a written dissertation and oral presentation. The research project can be undertaken in a variety of settings, and will be supervised by a member of the faculty at Imperial.

Your supervisor will provide guidance and support for developing the research question, design of the project and data collection, thesis writing and oral presentation.

Developed and taught by subject experts, this programme will look into the complex healthcare management issues facing managers today and give you the ability to make decisions and implement change, whilst gaining an understanding and awareness of risks and how to evaluate alternative approaches. Learning and assessment

Introduction

Studying online gives you the freedom to study when and where it suits you – at home, during your lunch hour or anywhere else you have internet access.

All of our online courses have an indicative study duration which is a guide to how long your course will take to complete. The actual duration may be longer or shorter depending on your speed of study, study options chosen and module availability. It’s possible to complete your studies faster than the indicative course duration by doubling up on modules at certain times; however, minimum study durations do apply.

All of our courses have regular start dates throughout the year. Our academic year is organised into modules, typically with a one- or two-week break between modules and a structured three-week break for the Christmas period. Students will receive a course timetable during the application process.

Teaching methods and style

As we are a 100% online university, we utilise a virtual learning environment instead of a traditional campus. The system tracks and manages the learning process in real-time and provides you with immediate access to your learning materials.

This learning platform allows both students and tutors to actively take part in real-time conversations and you can listen to, and view, live lectures and seminars over the internet. All courses are delivered in English only.

You are supported throughout your course by a dedicated Student Adviser and have the opportunity to regularly interact with fellow students and your tutor. To ensure you receive the support you need from your tutor, we cap our class sizes at 20 students.

Assessment

Our MSc International Healthcare Management course includes both compulsory and core modules.

We adopt an assignment-based approach to assessment instead of exams. Assessment for the MSc International Healthcare Management is based on a combination of written coursework and work on a dissertation or individual project.

You are able to see your current provisional marks from the start of the programme, allowing you to evaluate the success of your current study methods and clearly identify areas to improve. Our postgraduate masters programmes feature a mix of core and optional modules, allowing you to tailor your degree towards your individual personal development needs and career ambitions. You will complete up to 10 taught modules during your programme, totalling 180 credits. One module usually equates to 20 credits or 10 hours of work per week. Your week will include lectures, tutorials, workshops and personal study, with each accounting for 25% of your time on average. This stimulating mix of lectures and interactive tutorials provides you with the opportunity to discuss and explore the subject material in depth with your lecturers and fellow students. You will be introduced to the latest thinking and research findings and be able to challenge some of those that have created it. You will also explore real-world issues and tackle current business challenges, and interact with guest lectures and speakers from industry, giving you the opportunity to test, extend and refine your knowledge and skills.

How we assess you

You will learn and be assessed through a wide variety of teaching methods which vary depending on your chosen Masters programme. These include online materials and multimedia content, guest lectures, individual and group assignments, case studies, field visits, dealing room simulations, presentations, applied projects, consultancy work and examinations.

On average examinations form around 70% of the assessed work with the remaining 30% coming from coursework, including a written dissertation or project depending on your chosen programme. The exam period falls between April and June in the summer term, with students taking an average of 5 or 6 exams. Graduation normally takes place in December.

Ongoing support

While postgraduate students are self-motivated and determined individuals, study at this level can present additional pressures which we take seriously. Lecturers are available to discuss the content of each module and your personal tutor can meet with you regularly to discuss any additional issues. Full-time support staff are also available to help with any questions or issues that may arise during your time at Henley

Each pathway of our MSc Information Management is designed to give a rigorous academic understanding of real-life and current business issues. Graduates of the Systems Analysis and Design pathway will be equipped to manage and utilize information resources in various business fields including business & management, construction management and healthcare through a thorough understanding of systems analysis and design methodology.

A number of our students join our PhD programmes each year.

Students who pass the module – Business Domain and Requirements Analysis with a mark of 60 or above will be eligible for the British Computer Society Professional Certificate in Business Analysis Practice.

Assessment

Online Diploma in Health Economics

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students are split into groups of 10-15 students and are assigned a dedicated expert tutor who:

Facilitates clinical case discussions with the group.

Monitors, assesses and marks each student throughout the module.

Students use the skills gained during the lectures to engage with the different activities (see below).

MSc Pain Management course

The MSc Pain Management course aims to create professionals who can independently access information and use the information to critically assess, evaluate and disseminate the evidence base related to Pain Management. The course will enable more health care professionals to have the required knowledge to treat patients. It will develop problem-solving and clinical skills together with preparing students to take a leadership role in Pain Management.

Entry to the 1 year Msc in Pain Management will require the successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Pain Management (120 credits) either from the University of South Wales or from another UK University.

Our Pain Management Masters of Science course has been developed for health professionals who are interested in a leadership role within Pain Management including Doctors, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals, Practice Nurses and those with equivalent professional qualifications and background experience.

The MSc Pain Management course is the only one of its title that is accessible online, and is not offered by any other institution. On completion of the course, you will be able to:

Extend the knowledge of research methods and application to practice at MSc level.

Demonstrate an ability to use knowledge to adapt professional practice to meet the changing demands of health care systems.

Module 1 - Research Methodologies and Critical Appraisal

MSc teaching methods for this module are similar to the PG Diploma course modules however it is run over 12 weeks.

Module 2 - Professional Project

To produce the professional project, students continue to use the online course however much of the work is self-directed.

Students are expected in the first 8 weeks to interact with their tutor on a weekly basis. Students select a specific project and submit a project summary/proposal (approximately 1500 words).

Health Care Management Course Structure

Lectures are interactive with students encouraged to contribute their own experience of working in health care and related settings. In addition to lectures course modules include workshops, group discussions, team exercises and student led presentations.

Full-time students will study for 13 months, attending taught modules from October to Easter (part one). Part two is undertaken through the completion of a dissertation which must be submitted by 30th September of the same year.

Part-time students will study the part one modules one day a week over two years (Typically in year one students attend October to Easter on Tuesdays and in year two October to December on Thursdays. Year two January to Easter is modular and the day of attendance will depend on the module selected.), Dissertations must be submitted by 30th September of the third year.

The MSc Health Care Management comprises two parts.

Part one is taught through five compulsory modules and a choice of two optional modules.

Part two requires completion of a dissertation - This independent directed module can only be taken on successful completion of all of the taught modules.
