◾If you have a mechanical engineering background, but with little management experience and are wanting to develop your knowledge of management while also furthering your knowledge of mechanical engineering, this programme is designed for you.
◾You will learn to understand management principles and practices in an engineering environment, evaluate engineering information, and apply business and management tools. You will combine engineering and management knowledge and skills in projects and problem solving.
◾The programme is split into two semesters and a summer session. One semester will be based in the Business School and is aimed at developing knowledge and skills of management principles and techniques. An applied approach is adopted, with an emphasis on an informed critical evaluation of information, and the subsequent application of concepts and tools to the core areas of business and management.
◾During the other semester there will be a combination of compulsory and optional courses that will combine to provide the required credits in Mechanical Engineering.
◾In the summer session, a project will be undertaken by MSc students. The topic of the project can be either in Management, or Mechanical Engineering, in which case the topic will usually be closely allied with the research interests of the Discipline.
◾This programme has a September and January intake.

Projects

◾To complete the MSc degree you must undertake a project worth 60 credits. This is an integral part of the MSc programme and many have a technical or business focus.
◾You will gain first-hand experience of managing an engineering project through the integrated systems design project, allowing development of skills in project management, quality management and accountancy.
◾The project is an important part of your MSc where you can apply your newly learned skills and show to future employers that you have been working on cutting edge projects relevant to the industry.
◾You can either choose a topic from a list of MSc projects in Mechanical Engineering or the Management portion of your degree. Alternatively, should you have your own idea for a project, department members are always open to discussion of topics.
◾Students who start in January must choose an engineering focussed project.

Teaching and learning

The Construction Project Management MSc is a full time course which is studied over 12 months, starting in September each year. The course comprises eight taught course units, each worth 15 credits, and a research dissertation worth 60 credits. Students on this particular MSc study four core units fundamental to project management, and which are shared by students on the other MSc courses. In addition, the Construction Project Management Professional Practice unit is programme specific unit which is designed to simulate the major challenges to delivering a successful construction/civil engineering project through the medium of a `live' case study approach. Students must also select three option units and carry out a Construction Project Management based dissertation.

Assessment of the taught part of the programme is via a combination of formal written examinations and coursework assignments, which will include group work and oral presentations. Some assessment is based on online material provided by the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2 (a process-based method for effective project management).

Accrediting organisations

The MSc in Construction Project Management is listed by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) as an Approved Further Learning Scheme for Chartered Engineer. The JBM represents the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers. This means that successful completion of the MSc will enable applicants with an accredited first degree at BEng level to become chartered engineers.
The School has a Partnership arrangement with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and this MSc is accredited by the RICS Project Management Faculty.

Students who successfully complete the unit MACE 60062 Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution option unit are eligible for associate membership of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Many of our financial engineering graduates are now working as Quants in large London banks and other financial institutions. Others have pursued PhDs and have successful academic careers. Financial instruments are becoming ever more sophisticated, so graduates that understand complex modelling techniques are always in great demand. The high quantitative content of this programme opens many doors to a wide range of careers. You could structure and develop new debt or equity solutions to meet clients funding and hedging needs, or you could become a proprietary trader in exotic derivatives, or a software specialist or a quantitative analyst supporting the traders.

There are excellent opportunities on the buy-side, with hedge funds and investment institutions, as well as in investment banking and in software analytics. Opportunities in quantitative research, or with a rating agency, are among the many other attractive alternatives. Programme structure

There are two semesters of taught material and a summer session working on a project or dissertation. September entry students start with management courses and January entry students with engineering courses.

Semester 1

You will be based in the Business School, developing knowledge and skills of management principles and techniques. We offer an applied approach, with an emphasis on an informed critical evaluation of information, and the subsequent application of concepts and tools to the core areas of business and management.

September entry students have a choice of management dissertation topics in addition to electronics and electrical engineering projects, and January entry students have a choice of electronics and electrical engineering projects.

◾To complete the MSc degree you must undertake a project worth 60 credits. This is an integral part of the MSc programme and many have a technical or business focus.
◾The project will integrate subject knowledge and skills that you acquire during the MSc programme.
◾The project is an important part of your MSc where you can apply your newly learned skills and show to future employers that you have been working on cutting edge projects relevant to the industry.
◾You can choose a topic from a list of MSc projects in Electronic and Electrical Engineering or the Management portion of your degree.
◾Alternatively, should you have your own idea for a project, department members are always open to discussion of topics.
◾Students who start in January must choose an engineering focussed project.

Teaching

Our philosophy is to underpin theoretical aspects of the subject with hands-on experience in applying water engineering techniques. Although you may move on to project management and supervision roles, we feel it important that your knowledge is firmly based on an understanding of how things are done. To this end, industrial partners will provide guest lectures on specialist topics.

In addition to teaching, water engineering staff at Brunel are active researchers. This keeps us at the cutting edge of developments and, we hope, allows us to pass on our enthusiasm for the subject.

How many hours of study are involved?

Contact between students and academic staff is relatively high at around 20 hours per week to assist you in adjusting to university life. As the course progresses the number of contact hours is steadily reduced as you undertake more project-based work.

How will I be taught?

Lectures:
These provide a broad overview of the main concepts and ideas you need to understand and give you a framework on which to expand your knowledge by private study.
Laboratories:
Practicals are generally two- or three-hour sessions in which you can practise your observational and analytical skills, and develop a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts.
Design Studios:
In a studio you will work on individual and group projects with guidance from members of staff. You may be required to produce a design or develop a solution to an engineering problem. These sessions allow you to develop your intellectual ability and practice your teamwork skills.
Site visits:
Learning from real-world examples in an important part of the course. You will visit sites featuring a range of water engineering approaches and asked to evaluate what you see.
One-to-one:
On registration for the course you will be allocated a personal tutor who will be available to provide academic and pastoral support during your time at university. You will get one-to-one supervision on all project work.

Assessment

Several methods of assessment are employed on the course. There are written examinations and coursework. You will undertake projects, assignments, essays, laboratory work and short tests.

Project work is commonplace and is usually completed in groups to imitate the everyday experience in an engineering firm, where specialists must pool their talents to design a solution to a problem.

In this situation you can develop your management and leadership skills and ensure that all members of the group deliver their best. Group members share the mark gained, so it is up to each individual to get the most out of everyone else.

Students can make the most of laboratory facilities which are extensive, modern and well equipped. We have recently made a major investment in our Joseph Bazalgette Laboratories which includes hydraulic testing laboratory equipment and facilities such as our open channel flow flumes.

Although we recruit a large number of highly qualified students to our undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees each year, we don’t forget that you are an individual. Government Loans

A new system of postgraduate loans for Masters courses is being developed for students at English universities. There will be loans of up to £10,000 available for Masters students starting a course in 2016/17. The MSc in Engineering Leadership and Management programme, through consultation with business and industry (both large and small), is set to establish the key graduate skills and attributes required to succeed in a management and/or leadership role in the engineering sector.

Key Features of MSc Engineering Leadership and Management

The content of this multidisciplinary engineering management course will be very much informed by industry. Key modules on the Engineering Leadership and Management programme will deliver a broad introduction to management, alongside detailed engineering specific modules on:

The Engineering Leadership and Management programme will incorporate traditional classroom teaching, online learning, interactive workshops and seminars. Multidisciplinary group work will be a key component of the course, along with industry-focused projects. All of the modules on the Engineering Leadership and Management course will be delivered on an “intense” basis, i.e. in isolation over 2-week periods.

Accreditation for the MSc in Engineering Leadership and Management will be sought with key Engineering and other relevant professional bodies.

As a student on the Master’s course in Engineering and Leadership Management, you will gain and build upon the key skills and knowledge required for a management and/or leadership role in the engineering sector.

The Institute of Structural Materials at Swansea is a core member of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Materials.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 ranks Engineering at Swansea as 10th in the UK for the combined score in research quality across the Engineering disciplines.

The REF shows that 94% of research produced by our academic staff is of World-Leading (4*) or Internationally Excellent (3*) quality. This has increased from 73% in the 2008 RAE.

The MSc in Engineering Project Management prepares students for a professional role in the management of engineering projects by providing students with an understanding of both the people-related and technical requirements necessary for the successful management of engineering projects, as well as the organisational and strategic aspects. The programme also stresses the processes that are used to produce, process and service engineering-based innovation projects from idea through relevant analyses to launch, relate innovation to improvements in products, processes and competitive advantage and explain how intellectual property is protected and exploited.

This MSc is one of four MSc courses within the Management of Projects Group of Programmes. The other MSc courses are: Management of Projects, Commercial Project Management and Construction Project Management.

The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering has a long history of delivering project management related masters courses and the staff who deliver the programme are drawn for a wide variety of backgrounds and industrial experience.

Teaching and learning

The Engineering Project Management MSc is a full time course which is studied over 12 months, starting in September each year. The programme comprises eight taught course units, each worth 15 credits, and a research dissertation worth 60 credits. Students study four core units fundamental to project management, and which are shared by students on the other programmes within the group. In addition, the Innovation Management unit is programme specific unit where students will be required to collaborate in a project team to interpret information, make decisions, solve problems and overcome difficulties associated with teamwork and communication when managing an innovation project. Students must also select three option units and carry out an Engineering Project Management based dissertation.

Assessment of the taught part of the programme is via a combination of formal written examinations and coursework assignments, which will include group work and oral presentations. Some assessment is based on online material provided by the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2 (a process-based method for effective project management).

Career opportunities

The MSc Engineering Project Management Programme acquaints students with the basic processes of project management but focuses more specifically on the application of these in an engineering and innovation context. Practical skills in engineering-based innovation projects and protection and exploitation of intellectual property are developed. Successful graduates of this programme find employment in a wide range of organisations such as High Speed Two (HS2) Ltd, Nissan Technical Center South East Asia, Worley Parsons India, Saudi Aramco.

Accrediting organisations

The MSc in Engineering Project Management is listed by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) as being Approved Further Learning Schemes for Chartered Engineer. The JBM represents the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers. This means that successful completion of the MSc will enable applicants with an accredited first degree at BEng level to become chartered engineers.
Students who successfully complete the unit MACE 60062 Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution optional unit are eligible for associate membership of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
