Learning and teaching methods

At the start of the course, you are encouraged to attend an optional one day residential programme at the University’s Glyntaff campus providing an overview of the course and the study skills required.

Candidates are split into groups of 10-15 students, each group is supervised by a lecturer, who will also facilitate, monitor and assess each student throughout the module.

The Professional project involves writing up to 10,500 words on a practice issue. You will be assigned a supervisor to guide you.

This course provides appropriate post-qualification preparation for roles in endocrine related specialist teams, specialist nursing, practice nursing, and for allied health professionals aiming to provide endocrine-related services in primary care.

Online Diploma in Endocrinology

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students are split into groups of 10-15 students and are assigned a dedicated expert tutor who:

Facilitates clinical case discussions with the group.
Monitors, assesses and marks each student throughout the module.
Students use the skills gained during the lectures to engage with the different activities (see below).
Clinical case scenarios with case based discussion - 40%
Individual learning portfolio - 10%
Group/individual activity - 20%
Case based examination - 30%

Teaching Methods

Each module has the same format. Using an online platform and one tutor per 10-15 students, the self-directed distance learning is guided by tutor stimulated discussion based on clinically rich case scenarios. Group projects are undertaken alongside independent projects. Reflective practice is recorded in a reflective portfolio to help students consider how the learning can be translated into everyday work and practice.

Teaching starts with 1 day of introductory lectures. Students may attend these lectures in the UK (Glyntaff campus, University of South Wales) or South Africa (CDE Johannesburg).

The lecture series are delivered by the faculty and tutors, they are a pre-course organiser, giving students the tools required to undertake the online course such as:

Scientific writing.
Levels of evidence.
Harvard referencing.
Reflective writing.
The lectures series give an opportunity to meet face to face with tutors/other students prior to the online course.

Students are not required to attend the lectures however do benefit as they get a "jump start" to the course. Students who are not able to attend, should request a skype/telephone call to orientate them onto the course and are advised to review the lecture slides.

Students are expected in the first 8 weeks to interact with their tutor on a weekly basis. Students select a specific project and submit a project summary/proposal (approximately 1500 words).

Once the proposal has been approved, the professional project (10,500 words) itself is then completed through online guidance and supervision offered by the tutor. The student and tutor will interact regularly (weekly) on the dedicated students/tutor discussion area or through any other means of communication deemed appropriate by both parties (telephone/SKYPE/email). Note of any verbal communication with the tutor is recorded on the student's journal by the student.

Our MSc in Clinical Biochemistry will give you a thorough grounding in a discipline that deals with the clinical analysis of body fluids and other biological material to aid the diagnosis, therapy and monitoring of diseases.

Clinical biochemists are typically clinical scientists who work in hospital laboratories providing advice and interpretation of analytical results to other healthcare professionals such as clinicians, general practitioners and nurses.

They are also involved in the development of new analytical methods and improvement of clinical services, including quality assurance and audit. 

Through this MSc, you will gain a core knowledge and understanding of the normal physiology and pathophysiology of the major organs and endocrine systems, as well as more specialist areas such as paediatric biochemistry and drug monitoring.

You will also develop a core knowledge and understanding of clinical disorders and how biochemical parameters and laboratory methods are used for the investigation, diagnosis and management of patients.

About this degree

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000–12,000 words.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through lectures, tutorials and seminars. The Division of Psychology & Language Sciences has advanced technology for the study of socio-cognitive processes, including fMRI, eye-, speech- and motion tracking equipment for dyadic and group settings, as well as a 360ovideo camera. Assessment is through coursework, online assessment and the dissertation.

On completion of this programme students will have acquired an understanding of the processes involved in the construction of the social reality, in particular how cognitive and affective processes guide social judgement and behaviour, and how these processes are implemented in the brain. This exciting, contemporary and new Faculty-based flexible programme focuses on higher academic study underpinning a higher level of professional practice in healthcare. It is designed to provide the health and social care practitioner a stimulating and rigorous analysis of health care practice. It will have an interdisciplinary and interprofessional focus and aim to prepare practitioners to lead and manage change in a global health care environment.

It will combine conceptual, theoretical and practical work-based learning approaches to the study of health and social care practice and provide the opportunity for the practitioner to develop skills and expertise to an advanced level. The student will be able to map out a series of learning outcomes based on learning opportunities available in the workplace which represents an exploration of work focused and work related issues complemented by taught modules.

Within the MSc Advancing Professional Practice, there are five possible pathways for you to choose from. Each one is based upon contemporary clinical practice.

Entry Requirements

Potential/prospective students will normally:
- Hold current first level Professional Registration with a relevant regulatory body e.g. Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC); Health
Professional Council (HPC); General Social Care Council (GSCC).

- Have an identified work-based facilitator within their practice area, who will support and guide their development throughout the phases of the programme.

- Be working in clinical practice. Some potential/prospective student’s maybe managers/ educators within the Healthcare arena.

- Hold an undergraduate degree ideally 2.2 or higher in a related subject with a period of two years time in professional practice.

- Practitioners with extensive practice experience and no formal undergraduate degree will be considered by evidence presented within their professional portfolio and discussion at interview.

Course Content

The most important value which informs this programme is work-based learning which will be incorporated as a stimulating and challenging approach to programme delivery. This programme is distinctive because it will centre on the application of learning in the workplace and evidence-based assessment of practice and achievement, in order to relate the programme of study to the individual’s role of the practitioner.

This part-time, distance learning programme:

  • meets the needs of community pharmacy
  • equips foundation level pharmacists with the clinical, personal and managerial skills needed to progress within the modern NHS.

There is an emphasis on self-directed learning and reflection, enabling students to identify and meet their own learning needs. The programme has recently undergone major revisions and now includes optional pathways to meet a range of service needs, and the opportunity to register as an independent prescriber.

Optional modules support the development of a specialist clinical area, leadership, management and quality and service improvement skills. What you will study

Students will be taught core clinical topics and have the freedom to focus on particular clinical areas of interest. Students will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to meet the learning outcomes of the programme through a blended approach including: an induction day, distance learning materials and activities presented via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), a collaborative learning day with members of the MSc in Clinical Pharmacy (Secondary Care), programme and work-based learning including formative assessment and reflection on learning experiences.

Learning and assessment

The majority of modules are assessed by 100% coursework based on your practice. (The only exception to this is the ‘Prescribing for Pharmacists’ module).

Career prospects

Students who have completed the course report increased confidence to take on new roles in community pharmacy and greater job satisfaction.

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

Study support

You will have an academic tutor assigned to support you throughout the programme. 

The Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) including Blackboard and PebblePad (for e-Portfolios) will support students learning at a distance.

Use of Library facilities is available online or on campus. Students are also able to access a range of study days organised for secondary care pharmacists as CPD days.
